Sep 16, 2010I recovered some 60,000 files with PhotoRec and need a script to sort them into individual folders based on extension. I was able to do this once before but cannot find the script again (sad thing is that I probably saved it on another HD that I'm having partition issues with, but that's another story....).I found this script:

While it does work, I am not looking forward to going through all 132 folders and typing in each extension. The last time I did it, the folder was automatically created based on the extension(s) found.

Sep 28, 2010I have very little linux experience. And need some help with a bash script. I need to a script I can set cron to run to sort files out of a holding folder into final folders. It doesn't necessarily have to be bash, but I think it would be sufficient for this. File names are formatted as such when created: Dest-Date-Time-CID-Destination# I want the files to be moved from a all in one holding folder to a folder structure like this.
.../storage/year/month/day/Destination#/VarX(type)/hour/CID/'File'
I would need an if/else if/else statement to say if Dest = A set VarX = B If for example the file name was
infinity-20100927-17:00-1112223333-4445556666.wav
I would like the above file to end up moved from
.../holding
to
.../storage/2010/09/27/4445556666/Inbound/17/1112223333/infinity-20100927-17:00-1112223333-4445556666.wav
So the script will need to make directories based on information in the file name which is delimited by single dashes. Then move files from the holding folder to the newly created "sorted" folders.

Jun 3, 2010I have a directory listing with many subdirectories having many files. I want to recursively search for the oldest 5 files starting from the base directory and not 5 from each subdirectory. I am writing a shell script which sorts them using ls -lRtur|egrep "txt|jpg" > /tmp/file1 Now from this /tmp/file1 file I want to sort the files same as what the ls -ltr command does that is oldest file time to newest file time first. How do I sort based on Linux time stamp? The files itself also have Linux timestamps embedded in them So I can sort based after extracting them as well if it is easier.
My /tmp/file1 has entries like below.
-rw-rw-r--. 1 usr1 usr1 705 2010-01-22 17:25 sample20100603173659.jpg
I want to get the 5 oldest files and then delete them.

Dec 4, 2010what i wanted to do was find all the files with a specific name from a tree, sort them by modification time and have their directory appended to them so that i knew where they were (because they all have the same name). i tried a whole bunch of different things and finally did this:

find . -type f -name world.sav -exec ls -l '{}' ; > ~/dfsaves.txt; gawk '{$1=""; $2=""; $3=""; $4=""; $5=""; print}' ~/dfsaves.txt | sort -n > ~/dfsavessorted.txt
this did the trick pretty well, but as you can see it is far from elegant and i think i'm doing some things wrong and kludgy
first thing i tried was "ls -lRt | grep world.sav" which worked except i couldnt distinguish the files because there were no directories. that took a lot of looking till i accepted i couldnt make ls print directories as well and append them to the files somehow that their relationship would be clear. i tried piping ls to find, doing it in reverse, passing them from grep etc. etc. until i read some more stuff online that got me using gawk and sort. the questions:
1. is there some other, more elegant and simple way to do this kind of detection and sorting?
2. is there any way to use a pipe after using exec? the semicolon seems to prevent this entirely, forcing me to use an intermediate file as above. i could just remove it later, but i'd prefer a straight piping.

I need a process A to be able to get the start time of process B. I have the PID of the process B.
I would have thought there would be a simple system call to make by passing in the pid of Process B, but I don't thing there is??!!
So my other thought is to create a script that will be passed the pid and either I can read the file creation of /proc/<PID>/stat or I could also parse the start time of ps on the <PID>. This script can be ran from the C++ code. My difficulty is capturing this information in the C++ code. If I run exec ( or system if not a script) I need the results in a program variable....not stdout.
My only solution is write it to a tmp file and read it back into the program variable. Seems rather arguious but a least it would work.

getfattr -d <some file>
gives me zero results, and as far as I know ls does not have means to access creation time.
getfattr -n ntfs_crtime /mnt/<some ntfs fs> gives me "Operation not opermitted"..?
I know about the difference between ctime=inode change time and crtime=creation time/file birth time. I want to migrate a NTFS partition to Ext4 without losing the creation dates...

Oct 11, 2010My PC completely freezes after viewing any program on ABC's (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) iView service. The time at which it occurs varies but it completely locks the PC.
I'm running 10.04.1 and have an Nvidia 6200 card, I'm running the propriety drivers.
Could this be an issue with my graphics card? I updated it a couple of months ago and can't think of any other changes that have been made.
I have the latest version of Flash.
My biggest problem has been coming across someone else who has experienced the problem so how should I be going about trying to debug it?

General :: Adding A Files Creation Date To It's File Name?
Sep 17, 2010I have some basic experiencing creating simple scripts/making directories/changing permissions/etc. but I'm stumped on this one.
I have two linux boxes. I have a script set up on box 'A' to SCP into box 'B', grab a copy of a database backup and store it on box 'A'. It looks like this:
scp root@X.X.X.X:/blah/blah/blah/dump.23.gz /home/blah/DB_Backups/
I have generated a public key on box 'A' and placed it into the authorized_keys file on box 'B', so a password is not required and the file copies over successfully when the script is run. On to my problem...
I need to know what date the 'dump.23.gz' file was originally created when I'm viewing it after it's been copied to box 'A'. If I ls -l on box 'A' it only shows me the date it was created on box 'A' when it was copied.
What would I need to add to my script to append the backup's original creation date on box 'B' to the filename so that when it gets copied to box 'A' I know when the backup was created on box 'B'. I'm sure this is probably confusing. I've done lots of searching and can only find information on how to append the current date and time to a file name. I need to append it's original creation timestamp to the filename when it copies over.
General :: Merge Files By Creation / Modification Date?
Oct 4, 2010I have a folder with hundreds of .txt files (logs of some java application) that I have to merge in to one single .txt file. This application produces a new log file everyday:
day1: logFriday10September2010.txt
day2: logSaturday11September2010.txt
...
day8: logFriday17September2010.txt
...
and so on...
I could merge the files easily with "cat" and ">>" however, the problem is that I have to do it by taking into account the date (creation or modification) of the file.
If I simple use the cat command the output file will receive for example, all Fridays in a row, then all Saturdays, etc. and in that way I'm not considering the date.
I've searched for the options of the find command, since the files after creation are not modified...I try to use this for example:
$ find . -newer <some old file>
but that lists me all files after that <old file> and not by correct date.

This is the error, and line 59 is the second quoted above:

The script is run every minute, and this error only occurs at 12:59AM, or 00:59.
I presume the problem is either $NOW is being set to 059, or the testing is seeing 0059 as 059. I think the latter, because for the rest of midnight 'til 00:58 the script works. And with some Googling it seems that the leading 0 is making test treat the number as octal... is there a way to tell it it is decimal?
Perhaps this is just some poor time-testing code? Looking at it I don't think it will cope with set time period that crosses midnight..... there's probably just a command to do what I want, isn't there? I know I could have two different scripts cron'd for the different time periods, but it would be much more preferable to be just the one.

Mar 26, 20111. Evince is somehow screwing up font creation when displaying dvi files. I can preview the dvi file fine under xdvi. When I try with evince, I kicks off a slew of metafont font-creation runs, then shows me totally garbled pages -- the layout is correct, but none of the characters are right. This happens for documents that primarily use Times Roman fonts.
2. *Every* time evince comes up, it insists on starting in continuous / "fit page width" mode. I don't want either one. I want continuous-mode*off* and the window in the "best fit" view. So I have to click, drag, click, click, drag, release *every* time I pop up a file. It's very annoying. There doesn't appear to be any key in the gnome gconf config database I can set to affect these things. How do I fix this?...
