Software :: Merging Files Together Based On Latex Syntax?
Mar 4, 2010
I have a latex code file which links itself to many other latex files. The syntax is as follows:input{*path of file to be inputed*}The path is relative to the current working directory, so if my file is stored in /home/kevin/mybook.tex and I want to include a file in /home/kevin/latexstuff/copyleft.tex I simply write:input{latexstuff/copyleft.tex}
The latex compiler includes these files just as if they had been copied and pasted into the main latex file at the point specified. My problem is that I have a document which depends on quite a bit of these input commands,ut I am trying to use a latex preprocessor (ratexdb, adds database fields to your latex documentshich does not support input commands, leaving my file only half processed. So I was wondering: is there any easy way to parse through my main file, detect only the input commands, interpret the syntax and include the files specified (where specified)nd produce a second, populated file, which can then be processed by ratexdb?

I'm trying to use emacs in the auctex mode. But Flymake complains about something I could not understand. This is the error it shows whenever I open a tex file.
Code:
Flymake:Configuration error has occured while running (texify --pdf --tex-option=-c-style-errors PATH_TO_FILE_DIRECTORY/FILE_flymake.tex).
Flymake will be switched OFF.
I have texify installed on my system. I also tried suggestions in the emacs wiki on FlymakeTex, added the following lines in my .emacs file:
Code:
(defun flymake-get-tex-args (file-name)
(list "pdflatex" (list "-file-line-error" "-draftmode"
"-interaction=nonstopmode" file-name)))
How do I stop this msg and use flymake.

I'm totally new to Linux and this website. I was wondering if anyone had or could help me create a shell script that would merge two files from two different directories and then have that new merged file in a third differnt directory. The merged file would need to eliminate duplicates and sort the contents.

During the past eight years I've used a number of computers with different operating systems and browsers. On each one I made a habit of using the bookmark utility of each browser and saving the bookmarks file. I never ensured the continuity of the bookmark file - with each new computer I started a new bookmark file. Even when I was reinstalling the operating system I didn't import the old bookmark file in the newly installed browser: I've always started a new bookmark file. As a result I have tens of bookmark files for Firefox (json format - some kind of xml?) and IE (html file format?) each one containing hundreds or thousands of saved links. I have also some files containing links in text format (created usually when I was using someone else computer).
I would like to be able to manage this bookmarks files by using some sort of "bookmark manager" software. The "bookmark manager" should be able to merge the bookmark files into a single collection/file. It should be able to identify and remove the duplicate entries (I have timely versions of the same bookmark file) and also it should be able to group the entries/links on categories (for example the bookmarked articles on codeproject.com should be grouped under the codeproject category). Not to mention that it should provide a search facility to quickly locate the interesting bookmarks. I couldn't find such software in ubuntu software center. Do you know something that even comes close to what I need?

I am a semi-noob on this and I have problems getting my emacs recognizing .tex as latex and even running latex-mode. Usually when you run latex-mode (M-x : latex-mode) emacs should switch to latex-mode, but nothing happens in my case. The menu bar still show the TeX options, highlighting remains the same etc.
I am running emacs 23.1.1 (x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 2.10.4), this is on a university system so I don't know much about it.

Reading and revising LaTex 20-page documents seems to be much more easier with a printout (hardcopy) then reading them off a screen. However, I cannot edit the document in real-time (just scrabble comments on the paper) which is cumbersome.
So it there a tablet or even better an ebook device (with e-ink which is easier on the eyes) where I can read document similarly to a printout and edit them in real-time?

I have a bunch of text logfiles in the following format:
ID (17 characters)
Timestamp (14 characters YYYYmmddHHMMSS e.g. "20060210100040" -> 2006/02/10 10:00:40)
Random data (? characters)
end of line
The files are already sorted by timestamp.I need to get 1 log file with all the logs from multiple logs files, sorted by timestamp. Note that the log files are really huge, around 3-4G each (and there are dozens of them) I tried the following command:
sort -s -m -t '|' -k1n,1n +17 -o data_sort.txt *.TXT
Here is how I ended up with this command:
-s : don't bother with tie results
-m : merge all logs files
-t '|' : there is no | in my logs, so the whole line should be field 1
[code]....
Actually... it fails miserably. The output file data_sort.txt is just the concatenation of all files, not sorted at all.

I'm having a problem with sed syntax. So far I can sed the HiResBoundingBox to capture the images I want and output to pdf. But now ever so often I get an illustrator file that has hexadecimal values at the start and end of the file. Imagemagick powers through this and still creates the rastorized previews I want but the gs dies using the epstopdf script to output the vector files. If I hand remove the hex on both ends of the file, both functions work fine and the file can still be managed in illustrator but if I resave it the hex comes back. It only happens on a few files plus it seems to serve no purpose as the files work perfectly without it. I cannot get the sed statement to work. I've tried a blue million variations with no luck. Copied some that I found, same result.
Start of bad eps file:
ADOĆ ^@^@^@5O
^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@UO
^@im^K^@yy^@^@%!PS-Adobe-3.1 EPSF-3.0^M
The way I need it to look:
%!PS-Adobe-3.1 EPSF-3.0^M
End of file the same:
%AI9_PrivateDataEnd^M
@ @
just needs to be:
%AI9_PrivateDataEnd^M
Tried
sed -n '/%/,$p' < = blank file
sed -i 's/%/,$!d/g' = same
sed 's/%/,$!d/g' = same
sed 's/%/,$!d' = same
I can't seem to find any proper reference to this.

I have a program I use, rrdtool. I need to modify a ds value on every file at the same time. However, using a wildcard (*) to try this operation of all files does not work and instead only updates one file.
Here is the command syntax:
rrdtool tune <file> --maximum traffic_in:100000000000 && rrdtool tune <file> --maximum traffic_out:100000000000
So, how can I do this on every file in the directory?

There is a syntactical feature I would like to see in Vim, and so I thought to write myself a syntax file for my needs, but I am having trouble finding the exact type of syntax highlighting I want to incorporate'emulate. Currently in Vim, from the terminal instead of say gvim, when I place my cursor over a parenthesis or brace, the corresponding brace or parenthesis will highlight, or block its character. In my case, instead of a single character they will be full words specified within the syntax file.
I want to do something similar. For example if my document has three words:
Group
Element1
Element2
I want the syntax file to tell Vim that when I have my cursor over the word Element1 or Element2 that Group will become highlighted. In the same, to have the cursor over Group will cause both Element1 and Element2 to highlight. I have looked here but understanding still eludes me: [URL]. I would also be happy with creating some sort of command input, where I type in the group name and the elements highlight. Like a very specific search function that searches for only and all instances that are contained within the group named.

I have 2 text files : file1.txt and file2.txt
cat file1.txt
15 this is a sentence containing various words and spaces
34 this is a another sentence containing various words and spaces
cat file2.txt
2 this is sentence1file2
6 this is sentence2file2
54 this is sentence3file2
I would like to join these 2 files. The result should look as follows :
cat joinedfile.txt
2 this is sentence1file2
6 this is sentence2file2
15 this is a sentence containing various words and spaces
34 this is a another sentence containing various words and spaces
54 this is sentence3file2
==> so the joined file must be sorted on the first number. Any ideas how this can be achieved ?

I am a Novell (now defunct) CNE tring to learn Linux and am having a lot of trouble finding out where the WB 6-6 is wrong in the syntax for adding local4... the the syslog-ng config file. In the instructions there are discrepancies between commas and simi-comma, they are both in the statements in no particular order. there is no pattern to them. Here is what the book shows:
filter f_local4debug { level(debug) and facility(local4); };
When I try to input this in the Gnome terminal window to try and find out where it goes wrong I get the following: -bash: syntax error near unexpected token "(" If I can get the correct syntax I belive I can use the info to get past the rest of this portion of the lesson. I am desperate to learn Linux as the only jobs out there for a Novell CNE are migrations to MS, which really sucks, since MS really really sucks.

I have a folder named Pictures that contains a bunch of .jpg files. My problem is that they all have randomly numbered names, then there is a duplicate of the file that is random numbers then the letter a right before the .jpg.for example, there would be 123.jpg and 123a.jpg, where 123a.jpg is just a resized version of 123. What i'd like to do but have NO clue how to, is to have a script or something go through my Pictures folder, then copy the ones that end in a.jpg to a folder called Resized, and ones that dont have that to a folder called Originals. That way my Pictures folder will be in tact, and i'll have copies of them all separated out.I have to do this all through the CLI on a machine, maybe I dont even need a script and can just do it with a slick command?

I'm currently trying to organize a media server so that things will be in some kind of logical order rather than the current setup of dumping everything of a certain content type into a single folder. I want find a bunch of log files and delete ones that are older than say 5 days. Ideally I would then like to add this my crontab to run once a day.
The log files are in /var/log and are owned by root. They have a standard naming convention which is [date]RootCronRsync-backupHOME.log An example file is 20100621RootCronRsync-backupHOME.log Trying to put together a bash script to do this I think I need something like
Code: find /var/log/ -name *RootCronRsync-backupHOME.log -mtime +5 -exec rm {} ; However if I try this without the -exec rm (ie to see if I can find the right files first) I get the following error find: paths must precede expression: 20090405RootCronRsync-backupHOME.log Usage: find [-H] [-L] [-P] [-Olevel] [-D help|tree|search|stat|rates|opt|exec] [path...] [expression]

I know find can do what I am looking for, but I am wondering if there is an alternative way to find files on the filesystem either created before/after a certain point, or at a certain time.
Typically I rely on updatedb & locate for most of my file searching needs. Issues with those tools, though, are that it only has directory and file names, and it only creates a database of local directories, not anything mounted via CIFS|NFS or via -o loop (eg, .iso images).
So if I need to find files created after yesterday across the entire system (local and remote filesystems), I am currently needing to use find.
What other tools, if any, would accomplish this in a similar fashion?
I have tried ls and grep, but that requires (in my attempts so far) multiple searches:
ls -lR | grep Aug | grep 10
ls -lR | grep Aug | grep 11

I recovered some 60,000 files with PhotoRec and need a script to sort them into individual folders based on extension. I was able to do this once before but cannot find the script again (sad thing is that I probably saved it on another HD that I'm having partition issues with, but that's another story....).I found this script:
Code:
#!/bin/dash
mkdir "$1"
for file in *.$1; do
mv "$file" "$1"
done
While it does work, I am not looking forward to going through all 132 folders and typing in each extension. The last time I did it, the folder was automatically created based on the extension(s) found.
