I am missing a volume/sound applet for the GNOME panel. The only way to do this I found is the indicator applet, but this also shows an email icon which takes up space and does not seem to be removable. I do not want that networking stuff and I use Thunderbird as my email client. So, is there a way to just get a volum applet?
View 9 RepliesIs there a way to default volume to 100% in the terminal with gnome-volume-control-applet or any other program? I am setting up a dedicated Zsnes machine which boots into Fluxbox but the volume is muted by default. There isn't a man page for gnome-volume-control-applet.
When I log into Gnome the volume is set to 100%, but Fluxbox is always set to mute.
So for some reason... I can't seem to re-add my volume applet to my panel after I deleted it, on my karmic install
It used to be listed under "Volume"-something, in the "Add to Panel" window, but it's disappeared.....
The sound works and all. Plus there's an empty space which seems like there use to be an icon there. I have an ICEauthority error when I turn on my computer.

View 3 Replies View RelatedAlright, at first, the volume control went missing from the indicator applet, but then re-adding it to the panel didn't do anything but add a mail/chat applet. So I tried to reset the indicator applet settings with this code...
And now all that happens when I add the indicator applet to the panel is that the text: "No indicators" pops up where the mail/chat applet was before. Is there a way to get the volume applet back into the panel?
I was wondering if there is some ind of way of removing the rhythmbox link in the volume menu in the indicator applet..It's just that I hardly use it and it's pretty annoying and redundant as well having it there. I don't want to get rid of the volume menu completely nor of rhythmbox. I just want the link gone from there. Actually it never was there until I decided to open it once. After that day, it wouldn't go, no matter how I would exit the program. I didn't have this problem in 10.04. It's just in 10.10.
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy microphone wasn't working so I entered alsamixer to amp up it's volume and see what's wrong.Not sure what I did wrong but now the gnome volume control applet in the Indicator does not affect system volume at all.I can even mute it and it will not mute anything.The volume controls in alsamixer work fine and changing the volume in alsamixer affect system volume immediately.What could I have done? How can I get back volume control inside gnome?

View 1 Replies View RelatedRecently I installed JACK and Ardour to try out. Later I decided against it and so I uninstalled them. After restarting my computer, I noticed that the sound applet has disappeared from the panel, although the battery and mail icons are still present. There is still sound coming out of my laptop speakers, but it is stuck at whatever volume I had it set on before the last time I shut down. Volume sliders inside Banshee and suchll function, but I cannot change the overall system volume, and my keyboard shortcuts for this have stopped working as well. When I go into System->Preferences->Sound, all I get is a message that says "Waiting for sound system to respond." and nothing happens. I've tried searching around for a solution, but nobody I could find seems to have had aimilar problem, and none of the various other solutions proposed have worked for me. I'm on Ubuntu 10.10 by the way.

Most of the time I can't change the system wide volume setting by pressing the function keys on my laptop (the volume indicator doesn't even show up). When that happens (and I havent't been able to find out why and under what conditions that happens) the volume applet on my panel also becomes useless. Useless meaning that I can slide the slider up and down with no effect on the audible volume. I can still change the volume within the individul applications (rhythmbox, totem, ...) with success.
Adjusting the volume via gst-mixer or pavucontrol does also works as expected. It's really just the volume keys and the panel applet that refuse to cooperate.
About this system (pretty standard intel_hda, no problems with F10)code...

Recently I didn't make any changes in systems configuration. View 9 Replies View RelatedI have just upgraded my old work horse from 9.10 to 10.04 and on the surface everything looks ok. However there are a few annoying issues that I have not been able to resolved. One of these is an annoying auto shortcut that links the 'm' key to the Indicator applet while running my desktop inside an XRDP session (Windows Vista client). Everytime the m key is pressed, the focus is autotragically hijacked by the Indicator applet. Attempting to type any text from any application such as the terminal or text editor is excruciating since everytime the m key is pressed the focus jumped to the Indicator applet, the only way to disable this 'feature' is by removing the Indicator applet.
This problem is not seen in the native console, only in XRDP sessions.
There is another thread that deals with similar issue [URL] but only for users with Apple keyboards and does not apply to my situation.
I use XRDP alot so this affects me severely. How do I go about diagnosing this problem, xev doesn't even see any event when the m key is pressed, the focus just jumped to the Indicator applet?
I upgraded to Lucid Lynx from Karmic and now, when I try to play music in gmusicbrowser, the volume is so low that its hardly audible. In Exaile, there is no such issue. Deleted the .gmusicbrowser folder in home directory and tried to no avail.

I know HAL is gone and things have changed, but I'd like to still have the USB mounted at /media/<volumelabel> as it used to, as I got scripts that use those mount points.

View 9 Replies View RelatedUpgraded via Update Manager from 9.10 sound-previously-working-just-fine-system. Now, for example, running any audio-producing app (Rythmbox is a good example but its the same for anything including out of a VirtualBox XP install or with MythBuntu): The main volume control functions, but goes from muted to full volume in just 4 steps; raising it higher has no effect. It gets stranger: in Alsamixer or gnome-alsa-mixer I can see that lowering the desktop volume control to mute causes Master, PCM, Front, Surround, Center, LFE, and Side all to go to zero. Raising the desktop control one step causes all of these but Front to go to 100% instantly. Increasing the desktop control by a few more steps causes Front to step to 100%, after which no further volume increase is perceived. It's as if each step in the desktop volume equals some 25% of the Front setting, and 100% of the others. The audio setting in System, Preferences, Sound, Hardware is "Analog Stereo Output."
If I click 'Mute' on Master in the mixer then all the speakers mute, but unmuting Master does not unmute anything else. Only after I move and release the mouse-down state from the master volume do the other channels unmute. The volume control in Rythmbox, on the other hand, works seemingly correctly (maybe its going thru Pulseaudio?) And as an aside, why are there no controls for Pulse if it sits on top of ALSA?
I'm really confused by this, as all of it work as "expected" while running 9.10. Here is some output from this system (an ASUS M4A78T-E):

I managed to delete the Volume Applet that appears by default on the task bar. I'm sure it used to be listed in 'Add to Panel' in other version of Ubuntu however I can't see it there in 10.04.
Can someone explain to me how I get it back?
I've been testing Lucid and realized the other day that there is no "guest" option in the user switcher applet. I can select other existing accounts from the applet without any problems but I've looked everywhere and can't find a way to start a guest session.I've Googled around and can't seem to find any helpful information.

Now when I figured out how to put it back on the panel, I can't get it back to where it was (which was to the RIGHT of the system date/time applet). I was using both the Indicator Applet and the Notification Area applets in my panel but realized that very often when I started the system, the icons of these applet appeared mixed. Some items were duplicated (for example the keyboard indicator) where others were missing (sometimes the battery indicator, sometimes the sound indicator, etc). When that happened I had to remove them and add them to panel again.
This seems to be a bug that makes one applet interfere with the other (maybe because there are some items that appear in both but when you add both initially nothing is duplicated but after a system restart the problem happens).After searching for some way to fix this apparent bug without success I decided to remove the Indicator applet and keep just the Notification Area.
It works but then I don't have the sound applet anymore, because it was part of the Indicator Applet.
I searched for a standalone sound applet but I couldn't find any. Do you know of any such applet that I could install in the system? If I can find any it would be fine to me and I would be satisfied using just the Notification Area.
Had ubuntu for a few years left came back last month. I lost the indicator applet in the panel. I don't know what I did to get it back. I feel like this is a very very simple thing to fix but I just can't find it. Here is a pic of what i'm talking about.

Recently, I get the following problem: At the automatic connection, I get the message: Network manager applet (/usr/bin/mn-applet) needs default keyering.
