I've had issues with the network manager bundled with KDE4 for a long time (cant connect to wireless or VPN networks, so I have to use the gnome network management applet in KDE to get networking on my laptop...)Has anyone here tried the 4.4 RC/Beta and noticed any fixes for it? Its a known bug, which has been around for quite a while now.
View 4 RepliesSo far I have just used the CLI to upgrade KDE, and I get notified of upgrades once a day, where a popup shows when new upgrades are available. However, when I push the "install upgrades" button, nothing happens. In Gnome, all I had to do was click the update notifier and click install. I am pretty confident the same is posible in KDE4. I have searched the web trying to find a solution, but I can't find anything. I am probably missing some packages. Can someone help me configure:
1. Update intervals for the KDE update manager, and
2. GUI updates for the KDE4 desktop.
I had trouble connecting to a wireless network with openSUSE, so I tried the YAST network manager to see if that fixed it. Not only did it not fix it, but now I cannot connect to any network, wired or wireless. I tried to open the default network manager and it said "Network management disabled". How do I re-enable it?I also have set YAST settings back to their originals with no luck.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI find that the new KDE4 notification icon is not very easy to see.The "progress" indication is a microscopic vertical progress bar, that I find very difficult to interpret.OK, it is a minor annoyance, but I do find that I regularly try to use the network on my laptop before the connection has been established.It is also a regression over the icons in 11.1 or before, which were very clear.If people agree with me on this point, I will post a bug, with the aim of getting a clearer icon.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have been trying to lighten the load that Ubuntu uses on my RAM and processor, and decided to try LXDE, as it is the lightest-weight DE that I have tried and liked. I noticed I didn't have any wireless connectivty under LXDE, so I checked the LXDE site for the solution, and it said to download and install LXNM, which supports wireless connections. Unfortunately, installing LXNM (apt-get install lxnm) also uninstalled nework-manager, and network-manager-gnome, on top of lxnm not working properly, and stranding me without any way of reinstalling the OS, and without an internet connection (I can't connect with a wired connection, either). Is there anything I can do, aside from reinstalling?

I then go home and try connecting to my wireless network, "Network B". Assume each has WEP encryption. When I click on my home network, the wallet-manager pops up first. I enter my password. I then see that instead of adding a new network, it has "Network A" selected for editing. This happens every single time. What is going on here? I don't want a bunch of posts naming WICD either. I want to use the plasma widget because I like it. So what's up with it overwriting other network connections when you try adding a new one?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have some NFS shares on a server (say Desktop) to which the client (Notebook) is not always connected to. Even the server is not always up. To mount an NFS share in the past, I had some Device-Link icons on my KDE3 desktop. That worked fine. Now, SUSE 11.2 comes with KDE4. The NFS shares are properly configured in /etc/fstab as usual (including 'users' option). And now the big question: What is the official way to mount my NFS share on demand as an ordinary
user?
Desktop icons are not KDE4ish. And the Device-Link method doesn't work either, because it apparently doesn't take care of /etc/fstab (i.e. the users option) and insists on root privileges. Also Dolphin is not able to mount NFS shares when I need it because it
simply does not show them. The only way to mount my shares is to perform the mount command in a
terminal session. But this couldn't be the truth with KDE4, isn't it?
I recently fixed an annoying problem and I thought it would be nice to share my solution here. The problem was that after a cycle of suspend/resume, Network Manager would only auto-connect to the same network as it was previously connected to. So, for example, if I suspended my laptop at home, and then I went to school and resumed it, it would try to connect to the home network, and then just give up. I am a Windows refugee who discovered Ubuntu as a way to save my files from my virus-ravaged computer. Had no installation discs for Windows, so when I had to wipe my hard drive and start over, I decided to give Ubuntu a try. I've had mixed success, but that's another post...
Right now, the problem is that I installed 10.10 two weeks ago and was able to connect to the Internet with no problems - until yesterday. Suddenly, our wireless network (the only one in the vicinity) does not come up as available in Network Manager. In fact, the entire wireless option disappeared. I know there are many posts and threads on here about this, but weeding through them trying to find an answer is more frustrating than actually dealing with the problem. I know the router works because I can post on this forum from the Macbook. I really like Ubuntu and would like to keep using it, but not being able to connect to the Internet now on top of the other issues I've had is making me doubt I want to continue down this Linux road.
P.S. When I attempted an analysis through System Testing, it said something about there being no proprietary drivers?
I have used ubuntu in the past but had a lot of hardware issues with it and unfortunately moved back to windows (( BUT i have tried Ubuntu again and all seems to work great except wifi My wifi connection is sort of working because when i run SUDO IWLIST SCAN it does pull up all available networks. But in the network manager icon on the panel i left click but i see no networks and can't connect to anything. I WOULD LOVE TO keep Ubuntu and use it permanently but I must get wifi working or else this won't be possible.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently put Linux on a Thinkpad T40 I got. The wireless card works out of the box--I can see nearby networks. However, I can't connect to mine. network-manager would try (spin spin spin), fail, ask for the password, and then go back to the beginning and repeat indefinitely. This happened to me on a different computer, and on that one all I had to do was use wicd instead of network-manager. So I installed wicd, but it's not working either--it hangs at "Obtaining IP address".
I've found many, many threads with people who had the same problem, but none of their fixed worked for me.
I also tried to get wifi going manually, using this guide, but that didn't work.

My wifi connection drops sometimes and, for some reason, Network Manager attempts to connect to my neighbor's network, which requires a password (which I don't know). Is there any way to blacklist a wireless network so that the Network Manager will never attempt to connect to it?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am using an Acer Aspire 5536 AMD dual core laptop with a 64bit installation of Susie 11.4. Using 11.2 I had no problems connecting to the wireless router. As soon as 11.4 was installed, clean install, and the laptop rebooted, network manager failed to start, until manually invoked and then enabling networking through the system tray. Even after this it will not connect to a wired or wireless network sometimes for more than 30 minutes.

For extra fun using the wrong password a couple of times in a row causes the users account to be locked.Network manager automatically stores and reuses the password, with the net result that it is constant getting my account locked.Is there some way to prevent it from storing my password for that network?

The problem is that after installation the system recognized the card (is was listed in network devices in Yast) but I was unable to enable it through network-manager applet. Though the device could make scanning through terminal (found article in docs but didn't fully understand wpa_gui). Then i was stupid enough to delete the device from Yast list to try to reinstall it. So the problem is that i simply can't do this cause i see no way to re-detect. That is the goal is to at least turn back to post-install system state and try to enable wifi card again.

View 1 Replies View Relatedi'm trying to install virt-manager , to run a couple of virtual machines, i created a virtual nic vnet0 and bridged it to my eth0, i have configured the /etc/network/interfaces file with proper static ip, but i beleive the network manager is renaming my nic to eth1 and causing all kinds of problems. I uninstalled network manager and now i can ping anywhere in the network, but not outside it. ie google.com
View 5 Replies View RelatedWhen I attempt to connect to a wireless network, the network manager asks me for the network's password, then says 'setting network address' for 20 or so seconds, then asks me for some random Hex or ASCII key in the same type of window I put the password in (Secrets for Noel -- KDE Daemon). Since a key is already typed into the window, I press OK, which then causes the network manager to go back to 'setting network address', then the window pops up again and keeps repeating itself.

I have installed WICD on Debian . I can now access a new a Network Manager screen, which did not exist before, but it does not display/detect any wireless networks. It is like dead. Before installing WICD I did at least have a wireless WPE encrypted network, which was detected, although it often disconnected for no known reasons. Now even that Network has gone and I can't go on line. Can anybody help here? How can I configure the WICDNetwork Manager to detect an existing network or create a new one? In the latter case, would I have to reconfigure the Router settings to setup/connect to a network in Debian? May be I have to do this, because Tor/Vidalia changes my IP address and so my Network Adapter ( Linksys) can no longer connect to the router.
Also, when trying to follow troubleshooting leads in this connection, the Terminal screen on Debian ( CMD) would often return a PERMISSIONS DENIED message.

I happened to Fedora 13 that the network manager does not indicate any wifi network and I had to turn off the notebook for a while and then recover, this also happened to me 2 or 3 times on ubuntu 10.04 too. my card is an Atheros AR5007EG.
View 2 Replies View RelatedIm new in this world of linux and suse. I have just installed the opensuse 11.2 in a Dell Inspiron 5160. Such laptop has a BCM4306 Wireless LAN controller. When I tried to configure a wlan connection, I found that the firmware was not installed. After looking in different forums, I installed the firmware b43. Now, my wlan card is abled to find the wireless of my router.
I have tried to configure a connection with YAST as well as with Network Manager, but both cases failled. Specifically, when I use Network manager, Im able to see in the applet my connection, how strong is the signal, but I see a yellow symbol (in one forum, such a box is shown with a green symbol).
I have check many time all about the secutity, encryption, and so one and all seems to be correct. But when I open the mozila firefox or the konqueror browser, no chance to surffer in internet. Now Im just a step to become crazy. The drivers are ok, the information about the router and the keys are ok, but in such a way, I am still harmloss.
