View 1 RepliesI have installed recently a bunch of distros and settled with xubuntu 11.04 for my old laptop. Everything worked fine out of the box except some times wireless stopped working and the pc needed a restart. One of those times i restarted and because restart seemed unresponsive I clicked again but a problem tab poped up. Every time that i clicked restart, the pop up appeard I was forced to force shutdown.
1. Maximize/Minimize/Close buttons are completly missing. Even windows settings (where you can unjust those buttons) does not work. It is blank.
2. Cursor is invisible but when i click something appears , stays visible but the cursor is a different icon than before.
3. other problems as well. I cannot move terminal etc.
I finally got around to installing Linux on my laptop the other day, and I'm trying to use Wine to run some windows apps. Problem is, my programs never appear. They DO start - I can see them in 'ps -e' as well as Gnome System Monitor. Yet the window never appears. It's not just one program either; first I tried running Steam from the terminal and I can tell that it successfully launches. The window just doesn't get drawn. All other windows become unfocused when it launches and I'm even able to type in my password to log in (I know this because after I hit enter the "Steam Login" entry disappears from the taskbar and the "Steam" entry appears in it's place) but no Steam related windows ever appear.
The second program I've been trying to emulate is EVE Online. Similar thing happens: The EVE splash screen DOES appear, along with it's entry in the taskbar, but when it closes, the EVE client never becomes visible - no taskbar entry this time either. Again, I can see it running in ps -e or System Monitor, and one of my CPUs cores becomes maxed out, so I know it's running. Also, I just noticed that I can right click Steam's invisible entry in the tray and bring up the context menu, but nothing more than that. I've heard of fonts being invisible/incorrect under Wine, but not the entire program! I've googled and tried running things in compatibility mode for various versions of windows, but have had no progress. What am I missing?
Debian Lenny
Wine 1.0.1-174-gc4039bd
Gnome (with and without Compiz)
2.5GB RAM
1.66GHz Dual Core CPU
i tried to install world of warcraft through wine and it worked! but when i go to run it, the window's invisible (i can hear the sound, the mouse cursor changes, but i cant see the screen). one guy over on videos said to configure wine to run as a virtual desktop, but it didnt seem to work.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am running Ubuntu 10.04 and at first there was the icon for Open office quickstart and the icon for network connection. After some updates those two disappeared but I was able to switch off the computer. I have managed to get those two icons back using 'notification area' but the computer will not shutdown now.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI installed Fedora 12 yesterday. After installation, I added some packages like gstreamer*, amarok, vlc etc.
Once I rebooted, all desktop icons became invisible and I'm unable to open file browser and browse files/folders.
When I log out, I get this message saying "File Manager not responding!"
I initially thought I messed up with settings, and created a new account. Still no use.
BTW, I use Gnome Desktop Environment.
I went further and installed Fedora 12 again. And did the same package installation. And after reboot, no desktop items is visible and can't browse files/folders using file browser (nautilus).
The menu text is only visible in the top right hand corner in my Open Office.Wine has a similar problem but everything else seems to be ok

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am using Centos5.4
My applications, after minimized, seems to disappear from the desktop.
I can still access them using Alt-Tab.
In the taskbar setting, I have enabled "Show Application icons". But that does not make the icons appear
in the taskbar after minimized.
Any suggestions to show my minimized icons in taskbar?
When I minimize the applications, the icons do not appear in the taskbar. Why is that so? It was OK in centos5.3. I believe I may have missed out some configurations.
View 5 Replies View RelatedAm trying to run Ubuntu from the CD on a Dell Latitude D800 laptop that a friend gave me. A Suse Linux installation is currently on the laptop and appears to run OK and its desktop looks normal with normal buttons and icons.
The Ubuntu boot from the CD appears to run normally but all the icons and buttons on the desktop and the taskbar appear fuzzy/fragmented (that's the best way I can describe it). The menu texts appear normally. Otherwise the system seems to work normally. I can select menu items and they do what they should do, etc. I've tried fiddling with the screen resolution but that doesn't improve anything. I've tried the installation with 10.1 and 10.04LTE but the result is the same: fuzzy icons and buttons.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI've just installed Ubuntu 10.10 and the cursor is white on a white background. I tried changing it using the Appearance settings and only the size changed, not the colour.
Can anyone explain why this is happening, and how to change the cursor so that it is visible. Have never had this trouble with any other Linux distro, so it's not hardware.
Pressing CTRL+R on the desktop will display the hidden files.

View 6 Replies View RelatedInstalled 32 bit on dual core intel with no problem.Booted up into attactive GUI, no issues. *However*, the mouse pointer is invisible. The system is unusable, I can hardly launch an app, or know how to open a xterm.I managed to download .run drivers from ATI/AMD website. This ran a script for a bit then terminated, no idea if it was successful or not. Still no mouse.
Google search revealed that this is repeating issue with Ubuntu installs, could not get any meaningfull help other than to modify some x file so that mouse appears when I press CTRL. I can't even get to launch an app...takes 5 mins to "line up" the mouse.I must say I'm quite suprised to have this problem, as its stock intel, and the HD5830 is a decent and popular mid range graphics card about a year old.
I tried to upgrade to 11.04 from 10.10 but my system got hanged in the middle of installation and then i couldn't reboot into it. So I tried upgrading using bootable ubuntu 11.04 pendrive. After the upgrade when i tried to boot into 11.04, the display went very dim (almost invisible). It happens just after I select ubuntu from grub menu. I tried booting into recovery mode, tty mode but nothing was visible.Although everything works. I was able to open terminal using Ctrl+Alt+T which was slighly visible and shut down using halt command though I couldn't see it.
