Ubuntu :: Installing Plop - Boot Manager?
May 24, 2011
I'm interested in trying out the Chrome OS but I don't have a laptop that will allow me to boot from a USB drive. I did some research and learned that I can use this program to have the computer boot from the USB but I don't know how to install this using Ubuntu 11.04. If anyone has any time tonight, is there any way that one could write the instructions for how to install this program in a simple way so that I can understand. And yes, I realize that if I can't install this, maybe I shouldn't be messing with it, but I have a laptop that if anything disastrous happens to, I can just wipe it and start over so it doesn't really matter.

[URL] Is the PLOP BOOT MANAGER safe to use? This is meant to allow those with older machines to boot from USB (such as boot flash) so if it IS legit, I have a use (need?) for it. So, since I'm NOT familiar with the program OR the site, how do I know? (if provided, one can read the source, BUT how do I know the compiled is legit, & my coding has long rusted solid)
As far as THIS GOES, how can I be sure of ANY file that comes from a source that is questionable? I also found a program for LINUX that scans for malware & such, but there again, I NOT familiar with IT or where it comes from.

Downloaded and installed [URL], copying it to the boot directory under grub. Everything went fine until after my initial reboot and selection of the FAILSAFE option just to check that that was OK. Went well until shutting down, when hung just after closing all files and putting finishing touches to sending kill signal to all processes, when it hung and had to touch power button briefly to complete shutdown; no big deal. When rebooted and this time selected "Plop Boot Manager Install" (repeatedly), got this message: Booting "Plop Boot Manager Install" root (hd0,1) Filesystem type is reiserfs, partition type 0x83 kernel [URL] root=/dev/disk/by-id/scsi-SATA_TOSHIBA_MK4025G_65M21717A-part2 vga=0x314 resume=/dev/sda1 splash=silent showopts Error 15: File not found Press any key to continue
Then had to use FAILSAFE to reaccess OS. What I did in menu.lst: from title openSUSE 10.3 etc. changed to title Plop Boot Manager Install from root (hd0,1) kept it the same from kernel /boot/vmlinux-2.6.22.18-0.2-default changed to kernel [URL] (did not include the word default) Should I have made the root as (hd0,0)? Should I have added the -default to the [URL]? Any other understandings as to why this didn't work and got that error message?

I saved wubi.exe to c: and when running wubi, I pointed it to my usb hard drive for installation of ubuntu. When I rebooted my PC, I got a message that there was no boot manager. Even cntl-alt-delete did not work, so I unplugged the pwr cord and battery and reconnected them. I interrupted the boot to get to BIOS and found that Ubuntu was first in the boot chain. Apparently, when it is, no boot manager is found. So I removed the usb from the pc and was able to boot into W7.

i am currently trying to install xubuntu on an old computer of mine, the problem is that the computer's cd drives are no longer functional but the usb drives are. so i figured i could make a bootable usb and install it that way.I already made the bootable usb and tried to boot the computer using the usb, but it would just load like normal.I continued to search around and found that i could use PLop Boot Manager to force my computer to boot from usb, the problem is that i have installed PLop and yet it will not recognize the usb device.why PLop will not recognize the usb or come up with another way besides PLop for my to install xubuntu.

I run plop bootmanager - [url] to load live linux distros from the usb drive on the PCMCIA card. This is because grub2 doesn't yet support the pcmcia drivers and I wanted to make use of my old laptop.
I run the instruction on how one should install ubuntu on a usb stick from [url].
The process goes through when I see the live CD screen where it lets me try Ubuntu without installing. The splash screen comes up and all and remains there for sometime but after that it stops and then I get this error:
Its trying to search for my cdrom drive when it shouldn't as I have it on usb drive!

I was going to try to install plop on a windows 2000 so that I could dual boot win and linux. I ran [URL] to install. In the command window it said that the program can't be run under a Dos box and only to continue in I was not running in windows. If I tell it to continue, windows gives me an error message that says it is trying to write directly to the hard disk. It asks me to abort or ignore. If I ignore, the program seems to run. Is this not the right way to install plop to the hard disk?

I've just installed Ubuntu 10.04.
I'd like to boot using Windows 7 boot manager (I don't dare to put grub in the MBR).
I've used EasyBCD to add a new entry for Ubuntu.
[url]
Then I added Grub to /dev/sda3
And I get this:
[url]
The problem is that it always shows (hd0,0) instead of (hd0,2). I must change it every time I boot. I've tried to install grub again but I always get the same.
And another problem. After that Grub menu it deesn't load Linux but it loads a second grub menu [url] that loads Linux properly.
I guess I've installed two Grubs.
How can I remove the first Grub menu (Grub4dos) and make Windows 7 load the second (the good one)? or how can I remove the second one and change (hd0,0) to (hd0,2) in the second?

I d/l the Sunflower File Manager tgz file to install into Ubuntu. I already have the Build-Essential package installed. When I go to the directory I extracted the Sunflower's tgz files to and type in a shell "./configure" I get an error: "bash: ./configure: No such file or directory" Well, yes... looking into the Sunflower directory there is no such file or subfolder there. Now I admit I'm not an Ubuntu expert but IIRC I've done a few tgz installs like this and they went fine.

i'm getting an error when trying to run my update manager. i had been having a problem updating my opera, but just today my current package isn't downloading. the error i am getting is:
"Requires installation of untrusted packages The action would require the installation of packages from not authenticated sources." the detail info is:
"computer-janitor computer-janitor-gtk empathy empathy-common icedtea-6-jre-cacao icedtea6-plugin libc-bin libc-dev-bin libc6 libc6-dev libnautilus-extension1 nautilus nautilus-data nautilus-sendto-empathy openjdk-6-jre openjdk-6-jre-headless openjdk-6-jre-lib opera ubuntu-docs upstart"
i tried to just ignore that, so i unclicked it (just wasn't interested in dealing with it right away), and go on {this is how i had been ignoring the same error on my opera update for a week or so} --- and so when i tried going on, i got same above error except with this detail:
"empathy empathy-common icedtea-6-jre-cacao icedtea6-plugin libc-bin libc-dev-bin libc6 libc6-dev libnautilus-extension1 nautilus nautilus-data nautilus-sendto-empathy openjdk-6-jre openjdk-6-jre-headless openjdk-6-jre-lib opera ubuntu-docs upstart" ps- i am a pseudo novice who is trying to learn how to use the terminal, so if it's not too much of a pain, i like terminal directions,

I wanted to try the JWM window manager, which is not in the Fedora repository. The author's site gives no instructions, save for users of Irix (!), so after compiling and installing I needed to find how to have it on offer at log-in. I do not want to just have jwm launched after startx runs; I want the (Gnome) log-in where I can choose a desktop or window manager for the session.
I found that Icewm and Gnome have desktop-configuration files in /usr/share/xsessions, so I created one there for JWM using the other two as a model. What I can't find is where Gnome's session manager keeps the list of available sessions. I've searched the contents of /etc/X11/xinit/ and the configuration files in my home directory for a file containing "icewm" (which I do have available), and drawn a blank.

I have installed Debian Lenny on my AMD Phenom PC. Now I had installed it through debian-503-amd64-i386-powerpc-netinst.iso which I burned on a CD and installed on my Hard Disk. Now I would like to easily install x window and kde window manager on this system.
Can anybody tell me
1. What exactly I will have to download extra.
2. How to install it on my system.
3. If necessary how to configure it.

It's been a while since I meant to resolve this emacs-related issue when installing basically any package.
Since I really need network-manager-openvpn, I decided to finally try and ask.
This is a known bug I believe, with no fix if I understand well. My question is: is there a way to go around it (instead of fixing it)
Here it goes : when installing a package (in this case, network-manager-openvpn), emacs gets in the way like this:
Code:
And the package is not installed.
I have already tried uninstalling emacs. Doesn't work...

I started using ubuntu 10.04 LTS on my Dell Studio 15 laptop. Installing ubuntu has never been this easy! I used CD which used WUBIInstaller to install Ubuntu. Then I restarted my machine and selected Ubuntu from 'OS selection screen'.
I connected to my wireless broadband in few minutes and found a pop-up of 'update manager' showing 305 new updates to be download and to be installed. I installed all updates worth 370 MB and in middle got an pop-up of GRUB telling me to configure GRUB on some path. I just selected that path and clicked on FORWARD button. Then installation of updates got over and it asked me to restart machine. I restarted machine but on OS selection screen, when i selected Ubuntu it didn't boot Ubuntu but instead machine restarted again. I'm not able to boot into Ubuntu.

I've read a lot on the internet about various ways of doing this but i've been unsuccessful each time. Basically what i've done is accidently un-installed network-manager because I was having trouble staying connected on my WPA network. The easiest way of reinstalling it I know of is using the CD but I don't have a CD ROM drive and the pen drive I used to install it I no longer have.
I tried using a program called Keryx but you need python installed and from some reason this doesn't come with ubuntu 10.10. I've also downloaded the .deb packages but I still need to download 200kb which is a killer. I've also downloaded it from here too [URL] but the install file makes no sense to me as i'm not a massive linux user. One last thing reinstalling isn't really an option as i've already put a lot of time into setting up this computer.

In order to keep my system clean, normally if Update Manager wants to update a package I don't want or never use, I use this as a trigger to first go to Synaptic Package Manager and de-install the unwanted package, then refresh Update Manager and continue with the wanted updates.
However when it wants to install something completely new that clearly I don't want or need, how do I tell Update Manager to permanently remove it from the update list?

I just moved to Fedora and absolutely love it so far. I have two questions... 1st, are there any other software managers available besides the default one? I could not find them. 2nd, I am having the worst time installing flash. It seems like it is not installed by default. The first time I installed fedora was about a week ago and afterwards I installed flash and it worked. Later on I erased everything from my computer and reinstalled fedora although now I cannot add flash to save my life. I've tried a bunch of different links with directions on how to do it but I cannot figure it out this time.
