I'm doing a full actual install, but every time I try it boots into live mode instead.
I've checked the disc and it says everything is kosher. I'm not sure what's going on.
I have downloaded the Ubuntu 10.04 LTS iso from the Ubuntu website and created a Live USB disc with it.
I test this USB disc by booting from it on my desktop machine. It works fine. It even reinstalls Ubuntu on a test partition successfully.
I then attempt to use this Live USB disc to boot up my netbook. I receive the initial boot menu, and I can choose to either 'try with no changes' or 'install'. Either way, Ubuntu fails to boot, and hangs on the purple pre-desktop Ubuntu splash-screen for over half an hour with no change.
So I try re-creating the Live USB disc with both the Universal USB Installer and Unetbootin. The Live USB disc still fails to boot my netbook with exactly the same result. If I press the ESC key on the netbook whilst the screen has hung at this stage, I see the message code...
I have been here awhile, but have not posted much, and am a bit new to things again...I just burned a 10.04 Ubuntu Desktop Edition disc from the main Ubuntu page. However, when I load up the disc (boot from it), I get a login screen instead of a desktop or window asking for input.What am I doing wrong? I know on the older Live! discs you'd typically get a desktop or installation window.

View 9 Replies View RelatedThe problem is as follows: I recently had a power outage whilst my computer was running windows. When I tried to restart the computer I received UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT on the classic blue screen of disobedience. To resolve this I've booted a live ubuntu disc (10.04 LTS), of course when I created an ext4 partition and then tried to install linux I received "error while copying files" around the 65% point of the install which has ultimately told me to create another cd, which since without a working OS I can't do.
With the above filaure in mind I looking into fsck, fsck.ntfs and testdisk both fsck couldn't access the partition and fsck.ntfs suggested I run chkdsk (which I thought fsck was the linux equivalent of).So I figure the next logical step is to try and install linux from the terminal of the cd-based instance of linux I'm running just now from a freshly downloaded iso.

If I use Ubuntu's (10.4) Startup Disc Creator app to create Debian (Lenny) start up USB I just get (when using it on a separate machine) a black screen with the text "boot:" If I press Enter I get a pale blue screen but nothing else, some text if I press the TAB key, but it will do nothing. Is this because I use Ubuntu for a Debian OS or is there some other problem? I've noticed that the disc creator in Ubuntu only really likes Ubuntu related OSs. But since it recognised it when I created it I would have thought it'd work!

I made a mistake editing the fstab folder for mounting a new partition, and now I can no longer boot. I attempted to use a live disc to edit correctly, and did so, however I still get errors on boot. I have included a screenshot of what I get on screen while trying to boot.

View 2 Replies View Relatedi have just tried ubuntu 9.10 runing the "try ubuntu without changing" mode and the screen resolution was totaly off, it was 800 x 600 and there was only one other optinion wich was even worse , my screen res on windows is 1366 x 798.... Is this a problem that would rectify itself if i installed ubuntu properly or is there something i need to do?

It works 100% but is sluggish.Now I am wondering, from the standpoint of reducing SD card access and writes, would it have been better to create a Live Disc on the SD card with persistence options? What I am thinking is that a Live Disc is designed to run out of RAM, and would thus reduce the activity on the SD card. The only thing this netbook will get used for is the internet. It is a netbook, so the performance is limited, but as far as netbooks go, it is top of the line with dual core and discrete nvidia graphics.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI had ubuntu with grub2 on my external, with 2 partitions, sdc1 and sdc2 i had to install CentOS but the only 2 options when installing was "install on sda" or "don't install bootloader" and I chose don't install because I need my external to be bootable and now the grub from my external is broken, no file found.
My question is how do I install grub 2 on /dev/sdc and update it so I can boot it?
I have had to install the B43 diver before to get wireless to work.

I only have a CD-RW drive. I realized the extreme size difference with Ubuntu over 600mb and XPU over 4gb. I know how to modify partitions from the Live CD. I'm wondering if it's possible to install XPU or any version of XP while the operating system is active. It was possible with Windows 98. This might be the wrong place to post, but I really want to dual-boot Windows. Linux is great, but I would like to use SOME of my stuff without WINE.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have two sata HDs. One of these has Debian an Winxp installed. Grub is the bootloader. Grub resides in MBR (on the same disk). Now that I've added that second disk, I would like to test win7 on it. What I would like to do is to be able to choose -at boot time (maybe in bios setup)- between booting from the disk containing win7 or from the disk containing Grub with winxp and Debian. I thought that when installing win7 it would let me choose the disk where to install it and here is where the problem arises.
Win7 installer detects my partitions and lists them as if they were not on different disks. What would happen if I choose to install win7 on the partition I want to (second disk, partition1)? Will win7 create a new bootloader? Now I am a little confused and don't want to keep on going not being sure the results are what I expected. What steps should I follow to install win7 on the second hard disc not affecting the disc with winxp, debian and grub letting me choose between these two Operating Systems?
ive downloaded the Ubuntu CD from the official website and burned it twice, once one a dvd and the other on a normal 700MB CD-RW.in both, the screen went blank after the loading part before the main menu (installation, try it blah blah..)what should i do?btw i use a windows XP and here is my hardware details...sapphire hd 5770 1gb, 4 gb of ram,Intel Core i5- P55 .5 ghz, i think that its enough for the minimum of the ubuntu isnt it?

Now it would appear that either Vista Raid has failed (which I think will be the issue) or one or more of the HD partions has become corrupt. So, I have installed Ubuntu Live on USB and have succesfully booted; however, Ubuntu does not appearing to be loading as it is stuck on "loading essential drivers".

Is there any way I can prevent OpenOffice automatically installing when using the Alternate disc? I want to install a different package (LibreOffice 3.3) without having to uninstall Ubuntu's OpenOffice.
I have a Dell Dimension 2400 I got at a yard sale. Has the typical 512MB Ram, 80GB Hard Drive, 2.4GHz Celeron and the integrated Intel video and audio. I decided to put Ubuntu 9.10. However I got a Kernal Panic while loading the live CD. It gets to the white flashing Ubuntu Loco. It freezes. The lights on the keyboard flash and it complains of a kernel panic.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI bought a new NVIDIA GeForce 6600GT video card for this PC recently and now whenever I boot Ubuntu 9.10 Live I can't change the screen resolution from 640 X 480. I get this message to the effect that the driver is restricted and not free software. When I try to download it and use it it says I can only activate it after a reboot, but I guess it means after rebooting an installation of Ubuntu, not the live cd since it never takes.
Ubuntu recommends NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver 185, so I went to NVIDIA's web site and downloaded NVIDIA-Linux-x86-185.18.36-pkg1.run (and NVIDIA-Linux-x86-190.53-pkg1.run since I think it's the newest, at least when I enter GeForce 6 Series and Linux 32-bit in the driver download search it's what comes up). I noticed that at the beginning menu of the Ubuntu 9.10 Live cd, when you press F4, the option to load from a driver disk is there. I was hoping this means I could just put one or both of the above files on a cd, insert it into the other disk drive and select that option.

From one of the prevous threads, one of the members said that i had to have 2 partitions on my HD. Currently, i already have 2 partitions. Can someone give me advice on what to do??

Seriously, wtf is going on? This is supposed to be Ubuntu's default CD authoring software.
I'm trying to install files and everytime I manage to install from the first disc I succeed. When I get the the second disc I just keep clicking the "OK" button instead of "Cancel" and it keeps neglecting it.
