Anyone know where the metamail package went in 10.10 ... e.g. another package name, or its contents repackaged in some other way? I specifically need the "mime" command from it.

I am following this guide to installing eclipse via terminal command-line on Linux. However, this seems to be happening lately with all the packages I try to install..I checked the Synaptic Package Manager and reloaded and rebooted the computer, but to no avail.

Is my install corrupt/incomplete or something? My setup is a P4 2.4Ghz, 512Mb RAM, onboard graphics, wireless internet and the HDD is 40GB, split into 2 partitions, and my Ubuntu Partition is 10 GB. I have now lost VLC (Video LAN Converter), it is installed, but has gone from system/preferences/main menu so I can't start it or even put it on the menu or create a launcher. So I'm wondering what's the best procedure to do that. I already know how to create .deb packages, most of our stuff is Python and we're going to use python-support and cdbs. But how to maximally automate this?
We have a Git repo and ideally the whole thing should work like this:
* a tag is created in the Git repo (the version can be provided manually)
* some file like 'version.py' is created so that setup.py and the packaged software can refer to it and know the tag
* changelog is created from the Git commit logs
* the package is built (that's the part I've worked out - python-support and cdbs are involved here)
* optionally, the package is uploaded somewhere
There's a .deb package named 'git-buildpackage', is it suitable for this task? So far I can tell that it has one drawback - it looks for the 'debian/' directory in the root of the repository, which is not the case - our repo consists of several subdirectories, each contains a subproject that will be packaged independently.

Every time i start with a new installation, i have to download all the useful software once again...
i think it would be simple and easy-to-use if these software could be bundled into debian packages which can be installed just by clicking (like in windows)...
Is there any website where I can find debian packages for important software? Or can I create them myself...
i installed a package with dpkg --install and told it to ignore an unmet dependency because the package it depended on could not be installed with apt-get (it was a perl module) and i have manually installed the perl module, it works... however every time i do "apt-get upgrade" or anything like that it wants to remove the package i forced to install because it still thinks there are unmet dependencies, is there a way to either tell it to ignore that the package has unmet dependencies (i mean ignore that always, not something i will have to add every time i use aptitude) or is there a way to convince it that the package it thinks is missing (the unmet dependency) is actually met.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am trying to get Ubuntu up and running on my Dell XPS 400 desktop. I verified the checksum of the iso (ubuntu-9.10-desktop-i386.iso) I downloaded, and I ran the cd check before installing. I also ran a memtest for 16 hours with no errors.
So I install Ubuntu, and everything seems ok. Now, I try to update my software packages, and the upgrade always fails after all the packages are downloaded (sometime during actual installation). So, I have to reboot, and the file system will not mount. I run fsck and reboot, and now I cannot even boot normally or to a shell... This has happened to me twice in row.
What is the best plan of attack when a package fails to install midway? I want to use Ubuntu, but this is making it pretty hard.
When I try to install something VIA Software center, there's always something else installing first. So, I chose the obvious thing, and ran sudo dpkg --configure -a. Here's what it fed me
