I downloaded and burned the Ubuntu 10.10 ISO today, and booted it on a PC I wanted to install Ubuntu on. The CD booted successfully, and the desktop came up, but when I double-clicked "Install Ubuntu 10.10", nothing happened. I clicked it a few more times, but still nothing. I then tried rebooting, and clicking the Install icon again. Still, nothing. Any ideas as to what is causing this?
View 9 RepliesWhen I double click on the script nothing happens. If t try to run it through terminal, it runs ok. In the Previous Ubuntu version (10.04) when I double-clicked a script it popped up some choices. Run in terminal, display, etc. That does not happen now.

I then installed 64-bit Windows 7 on the same hard drive, first partition: Sdb1 (Sdb2 is formatted NTFSd willusedasstorage).Windows installed fine.Then I installed Windows in 32-bit on the first hard drive, first partion: Sda1. Sda2 will again be used as storage.When I boot up, Windows boot manager gives me the option of the two windows OS's to install (but not Ubuntu of course).I wanted to boot into the Live CD, where I would reinstall grub, assuming it would recognize my two Windows, and I could boot into any of the three OS's upon start-up.The Ubuntu Live CD, will act as though it is going to boot, bringing me up to the loading screen, then it cuts out to "busy box" and I am not sure what to do. Buys box is almost like a command prompt, but I don't understand the commands.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have been running Ubuntu desktop on my Acer Aspire One AOA150-1635 for over a year now in one form or another. I originally dual booted XP and Ubuntu Netbook Remix but decided against the remix when I did a clean install (over a year ago). All the issues I had then were the same issues others were having and have been fixed for a long time. I just recently upgraded to 10.10. I am unsure if this problem was present prior to the upgrade and I just hadn't run across it yet. I am also getting ready to upgrade my desktop and am afraid I will have the same issues.
It seems that certain windows don't fit on this desktop. For instance when I open Compiz config settings manager the bottom of the window is below the screen. When I try to click an option the window jumps and the same thing happens to the top. I can also click anywhere on the window to make this happen. I have included a couple pictures (taken with my camera please forgive the quality) to show you exactly what it is doing. It is getting rather annoying when I try to open one thing and the other right above or below it opens instead. I have to place my pointer in the spot where the item I am selecting will be after it jumps in order to open what I mean to open. When I right click it gives me options as if I was right clicking on the desktop background. The other issue which seems to be related is not being able to get to certain parts of longer windows such as Gnome color chooser. It seems to run off screen as well.
I recently downloaded Firefox 5.0 Aurora (alpha). I just extracted the tarball in my home directory and the program itself seems to work okay. However, when I add the shortcut to the launcher it does nothing more than blink when clicked. The only way I've found to get the Firefox to open without running from terminal was to add a symbolic link to the desktop, which is fine I suppose. I was just curious if there is a way to edit the launcher icon itself to make it work, or a more sophisticated install procedure that I need to use.

I have been running Ubuntu with no problems for a while now. Earlier today, I began to download some updates. When I came back to the computer, there was a prompt to restart, but also an error message. I didn't catch the error message until I had clicked the restart button. Now, when I try to access Ubuntu from the dual-boot menu (I run Vista as well), I keep getting the following error message.

My laptop's been locking up in Linux (Ubuntu, Backtrack, Puppy) periodically for a while now. When it locked up, it was always immune to the magic of SysRq, which I thought might indicate a hardware problem. It became so bad that I had to stop using the laptop.
Today, when I turned it on and tried to boot into Fedora 12, I got the following error (just once, it just locked up at various points during the splash screen after this once):

All the seemingly missing letters were really missing, not my typos.
As you can see, kernel version is 2.6.32.11-99.fc12.x86_64 and my laptop is a Sony Vaio TZ 250N (Core 2 Duo ULV 1.2GHZ). Note that with the other remaining kernels from the updates, nothing ever happened other than the locking up. The core temperatures hover pretty high, about 55-60C peak but this is still below the critical temp. Memtest came up clean when the problem first started happening.
I have kubuntu since I like KDE, but I loathe Kubuntu's package manager gui. To solve that, I installed gtk and the Ubuntu Software Center.Every time I hit install for any package in the software center and give my password, the window closes. The installation completes, but I cannot navigate to any page listing the package that is being installed except the "installation in progress" page without the window closing

View 12 Replies View RelatedUpdated to 10.04 OK except for a couple of things. No sound icon on the task bar and it's not in the 'add to taskbar list'. Not a major problem, just put it in the 'start programs section'.Annoying thing is after selecting from the grub boot menu, the machine seems to be suffering some indesision as the cursor sits on the top lhs of the screen flashing and the screen modulates between various degrees of darkness. Then the machine boots OK. Certainly slower than karmic - not quicker as reported. Seems to be some conflict happening. There is a duplication of the kernal entries for default and safe. Mabe this is the problem. I have run update-grub2, but it keeps giving me double entries.

But then the wireless doesn't work, nor do the drivers I had working with 9.10 (RT8192SE). So, that's scrapped. A laptop without wireless is pretty useless.Workstation does a complete lockup on login aswell. HasNvidia 9300 onboard card. But at this point, I don't want to find out what else is waiting when I fix that.I was really expect a rock solid release since it was going to be LTS. But at the moment it's pretty useless to download and I have been using Ubuntu since 7.xx series.
