Ubuntu Installation :: Use The Empty Space For 9.10 [46gb]?
Feb 21, 2010
I have removed the trial of win 7 and want to use the empty space for Ubuntu 9.10, [46gb]. Opening disk utility shows 60gb hard drive, divided into system reserved 105mb, 46gb file system [Linux ext4 [version 1]], 13gb extended [contains no logical partitions], 13 gb [Linux ext4 [version 1]], 617mb swap space.Because I have given the 46gb space the same name as the 13gp space i.e. [Linux ext4 [version 1]],will this now be used By Ubuntu for data storage or do I need to do a complete re-install?

I just bought a new HP desktop, and I want to install Debian on the hard drive. I ran the Windows program on the Debian CD to start the install.
I selected Manual drive setting, and resized the large C: partition to 50 GB. I want to install Debian in some of the free space, only their isn''t any free space! The 400+ GB I took out of the C: partition is labeled "unusable" instead of "free space."
If I double click the unusable space, I am just given the cylinder/head/sector numbers. How I can make that space usable?
I would boot my Gparted CD, but I don't know how to get to the BIOS. The boot screen goes right to Windows without showing me the key to get to the BIOS. I tried hitting DEL, but to no effect. Do you know what the HP computers use to interrupt the boot?

I have a PC with Windows 2000 Pro installed in an NTFS partition of 60GB. My rest hard disk (500GB) is empty, no partition at all. When I run Ubuntu 10.04 installation after step number 3 I get a weird step number 4 showing prepare partitions with an empty array and no available command button at the bottom! So I can not create any partition... Also in step 4 I never see the "prepare disk space" menu. If I use a 9.04 Ubuntu CD and I try to install I get every menu fine as expected. I even tried the 10.04 CD to another PC with Windows XP PRO and the installer worked as expected for partitions.

The partition is formatted to ext3, starting with block 1 on the drive. The mount point for /dev/sdc1 lists 0 files when doing `ls -A` `df -h` shows that the partition has 92MB used. How is this space being used, and how can I free it up?edit: I guess this isn't a newbie question.

I was trying to list sudo users in a Linux Machine,
[root@redhat ~]# grep -v -E '^#' /etc/sudoers
root ALL=(ALL) ALL
%work ALL=(ALL) ALL
%dilipvp ALL=(ALL) ALL
where work is a group and dilipvp is user. Can you help me in creating a better script which can list the members of the group work as well. and why I am getting empty space in between.

I've noticed that when I run:
davek@linux-kw2x:~> df
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda2 20641788 8427780 11165368 44% /
udev 961204 192 961012 1% /dev
/dev/sda3 217642344 4037944 202548468 2% /home
davek@linux-kw2x:~>
I have 44% used. It should be much smaller, under 10%. How do I empty the /tmp file or other file to free up space?

Logical Memory Space of 4GB is divided in to 3GB User Space and 1GB Kernel Space. Always. Correct?
1. How can we change it? (just changing value of PAGE_OFFSET is okay?)
2. If system have only 256MB of memory (embedded system) and suppose Kernel Modules eat away all the memory during boot. User space will be left will no memory. Is this case possible?

I am struggling to figure out why I cannot get Ubuntu to install. I boot my machine and run LiveCD and I can see me 36G raptor in GParted or partitioner or under Places but when i try to install 9.1, there is no drive after the keyboard layout in partitioner. Can anyone please shed some light on this. I have changed sata ports but that didnt help either. I don't understand how it would be a driver issue if I can see the drive and partition it.

I recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my machine. I logged in and installed a few programs like wine. Everything went fine until I rebooted. Now, after I log in, it gives me 2 error messages: One about how it could not update ICEAuthority or something
Another about how usr/lib/libconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check2 returned status 256. Then, something else pops up about how Nautilus can't find or doesn't have permission to write to home/user/Desktop and ome/user/.nautilus. I tried booting in recovery mode and did a dir on /home, but nothing showed up, which makes me think that they somehow disappeared or they aren't being shown.

I am completely new to Ubuntu/Linux and am having trouble getting my DVD-ROM drive to work. I've tested a few things, and it seems that if there is a CD in it when I boot, then it works fine, but if there is nothing in it then Ubuntu won't list the device. The DVD-ROM is master on a PATA cable and the CD-RW is slave (yes I know it's getting old now...) Drives worked fine under Windows XP. I don't know very much about the boot process, but the following from kern.log seemed relevant: Booting with a CD:

df -h [URL] I did the following command to find everything is in /usr or /var, then tracked it down to /usr/lib and /usr/share as the main offenders, but out of all the directories none are more than 1mb or so.
du -sh /* | sort -gr | head -n 5
I tried to uninstall firefox, which is what got me in this mess in the first place, the log claims it will remove ~240 mb but failes on a "E: Write error - write (28 No space left on device)" [URL] If I could juggle something onto an external hard drive so I can uninstall firefox I would be out of the wood. Failing that I believe a new install is in order.

I gave upon 11.3 M4.Tried installation by text mode but there's another screen showing various USB devices status superimposing on the Linux text install. Returned to Live installation via Live CD. Installation completed > restart >autoconfig failed. Tried live installation again but Suse kept suggesting installing into one of the empty 2 Gb partitions. Also had problems with Gparted Live 0.5.1-1 CD because somehow the keys froze. Had to replace it with 0.5.2-1. I am installing 11.2 on a laptop but right now I am stuck with frozen "Creating cache files for fontconfig". This has taken over an hour and nothing seems to be happening. I have successfully installed openSUSE 11.2 on an older laptop and a desktop. Also experienced installing Windows 7, Ubuntu and PC-BSD on both types of machines.

I am trying to install ubuntu 9.10 on an system which already has XP installed. I had used Ubuntu earlier but when I installed XP ( in an attempt to dual boot) I seem to have lost the Ubuntu Installation. But the problem is GParted or the Ubuntu installer dont recognize the existing partitions but instead see it as an empty unallocated drive. I have a 120GB hard disk. Below is the extract after fdisk:
Disk /dev/sda: 120.0 GB, 120034123776 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 14593 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x4fa8a60b
Disk /dev/sda: 120.0 GB, 120034123776 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 14593 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x4fa8a60b .....
Also this is how the disk Utility in Ubuntu sees my system: ( See attachment)

My iPod touch was working fine in 10.04 and since the upgrade to Maverick, I cannot see the songs in it in Rhythmbox or Banshee. In Rhythmbox it appears empty and crashes Rhythmbox when I try to right click it to see the properties. In Banshee the songs appear as 'other'. Trying to read it in GTKPod yields the following error: iPod Database failed: Error during parsing of file /home/user/.gvfs/user's iPod/iTunes_Control/iTunes.I tried re-installing the gstreamer plugins, and also libimobiledevice to no avail. Also tried re-installing the ipod plugin for Rhythmbox and nothing there either

I'm installing Wordpress and I want Hosting Multiple Sites with them. For that I need modify the httpd.conf file but it's empty. Where I can make that changes? These are the changes:
1. Type: LoadModule rewrite_module /libexec/mod_rewrite.so
2. Find the <VirtualHost> section in the httpd.conf file.
3. Find a line in the <VirtualHost> section of the httpd.conf that looks like this: AllowOverride None
3. Replace that line with this line: AllowOverride FileInfo Options
4. On a new line, type ServerAlias *.[URL].
5. Save the httpd.conf file and close it.

FC13 and Ubuntu 10.04 - both 64bit. Hardware: MBP 5,4 Here's how I do the install:
1. Boot to Ubuntu LiveCD and wipe disk.
2. Create a msdos partition table via gparted
3. Reboot from FC13 or Ubuntu install disk and continue to install with installer suggested partition scheme.
4. Reboot and get an error that says "uncompression error -- System halted"
Variation that I have tried:
1. After #3, boot into FC13 or Ubuntu rescue mode, chroot to hd image and run:
# grub
> root (hd0,0)
> setup (hd0)
> quit
2. Create a 250MB partition where I installed refit and use rest of the disk for Ubuntu or FC13. After installation, both Ubuntu and FC13 halt at the same error.
3. gptsync fails with no refit installed. Finds GPT table empty. LiveCDs from both distros work fine so ruling out hardware issues like bad memory etc.

I have never had to do this before But I'm giving my laptop to my mother when my new one arrives and I need to remove the ubuntu installation and get the disk space back.
A few months ago the install stopped working. I can't remember what the error said... and tbh I can't be bothered to reboot twice to read it, but it has to be removed now anyways.
Had a look in windows to see if I can do anything in the disk manager, but it appears I can't. Oh wise ones, please, which path should one take?

Since I installed TinyXP on another partition on my PC, I get "omitting empty partition" when I use fdisk -l.
Code:
omitting empty partition (5)
Disk /dev/sda: 250.1 GB, 250059350016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30401 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
[Code].....
NOTE: I also searched for the palimpset error and I found a Bug Report there: [URL. I don't know if these informations could help to fix this problem, I think it's related and probably cause by the installation of Windows XP and the way that gparted and palimpset read the partitions.
