Ubuntu Installation :: Nvidia Still Failing - Pre-install Script Says 'exit'?
Nov 20, 2010
It's been quite a run-around trying to get the Nvidia driver working.I have already followed a lot of instructions, at least onceI still get caught at "the pre-install script failed". When I looked at the script itself, it says it's "triggering an error status to prevent the installer from overwriting ubuntu's nvdia packages."Some say this script can be ignored, but it seems to be the only thing keeping my install from working. Some say install from root prompt, some say GUI OK. Some say d/l from NVIDIA, some from repository. I have been doing root, init 3, removing old drivers, etc..

I managed to install the graphics card's driver on several distributions, but I just don't get what I have to do to run it on Fedora.Well.... The installation program asks me that X must be stopped... but.. how do I do that?Ctrl + Alt + Backspace doesn't work. When typing "top", X or gdm are not in the list.

The first thing I do is press ctrl-alt-f1. Then I do this:
Code: sudo su
init 3
./NVIDIA-linux-x86-260.19.12.run Then it comes up with the error that I have X-server running.
I've also tried Code: /etc/init.d/gdm stop but that command wasn't recognised. I've also tried Code: killall -9 X but there are no processes called X

I'm trying to install the latest NVIDIA drivers (not the ones provided by the 'Additional drivers' application). In order to install them, I need to exit the X-server and terminate all OpenGL processes. How do I do that? I've seen many things like 'press ctrl-alt-backspace' and typing 'sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop' but none of them work. I'm using Kubuntu 10.10 and gdm doesn't even exist.

I have an Asus Eee running the factory installation of Linux. Xandros, I think. Whatever it is, it's not letting me update Firefox, so I'm trying to replace it with Ubuntu Netbook. I made a bootable USB stick according to the instructions at [url], and I know the problem isn't with the USB because the Windows machine I'm currently on wants to know if I want to try out Ubuntu or install Ubuntu or learn more, but when I put the stick in the netbook, nothing happens, and when I reboot with the stick in the netbook, nothing happens. The netbook's set to boot from a USB if there's one present; I checked. Is the problem that the stick's only supposed to work on Windows?

I can't figure out how to install the nvidia drivers for my nvidia 8800 GT video card. I've followed some other posts and all the posts seemed either incomplete, or led me down a path of which eventually broke my installation, that I needed to reinstall the entire ubuntu system.Again, it may not have been broken, i just didnt know how to get back in to the gui version of ubuntu, the instructions took me to the console terminal
1.) I've installed the ubuntu 10.10 64bit for i386 in an oracle virtualBox..
2.) downloaded from nvidia.com "NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-260.19.44.run"
3.) Stuck don't know what to do.

I just installed Karmic Koala on one of my hard harddrive. The other disk has Windows XP. Previously I had a working dual-boot setup, but after problems with Ubuntu I reinstalled it. On booting, I get the following:
Code:
Grub Loading stage1.5
Grub loading, please wait...
Error 2
There is no Grub menu which might allow me to drop to a Grub prompt and evaluate. This occurs whether I boot with the Ubuntu harddrive or re-set the BIOS to boot with the Windows harddrive. If I boot with a LiveCD, I see that both my Ubuntu and Windows harddrives exist and are readable; the Ubuntu was indeed wiped clean and reinstalled; the issue is with the boot process. How can I set this up to boot?

I really like qBittorrent.I would really love it if it worked in the unity desktop. There's a few issues with this--
1. No icon in system tray.
2. No access to latest version in software center.
I've looked around in the forums and tried to "whitelist" all apps--I don't know what that means and don't personally understand why ALL apps weren't whitelisted in the first place. That was unsuccessful.

I am trying to install debian from a netinst cd. Everything seems to go fine except when the installer needs to connect to a mirror. It doesn't throw up an error, it just hangs a bit and then seems to keep going a lot quicker than i would expect. For example, when installing additional software, it gets stuck downloading the first few files for about 5 mins and then skips ahead and finishes the entire process in about 5 mins.
What I end up with is a very bare bones system when I fist boot into it, without any of the stuff that I had indicated that I wanted to install (ie desktop environment, web server, etc). The Internet connection works and I am able to ping websites including a number of the mirrors I tried during the install. However when using apt-get it just gets stuck trying to connect to the mirror and doesn't go any further.

I switched from windows to Ubuntu 10.10. But I'm not getting along with it as well as I expected I would Specially cause I'm not getting the best out of it due to limited web connectivity. I used to use a usb WiMax modem back in windows (which is also supposed to be supported by linux as my service provider said) for internet. But I'm having a hard time configuring it on my Ubuntu. The modem works fine but I'm failing to install the drivers [url]. I used my cell as a temporary modem to get help from the web.
I downloaded:-
i2400m firmware 1.5.0
WiMAX Tools 1.4.5
WiMAX Network Service 1.5.2
According to the documentation, I'm supposed to install the linux kernel 2.6.35 which Maverick comes with anyway.
Then comes the part to install the firmware. The command I used was
Code:
But unfortunately and annoyingly the result is
Code:
I didn't get it. Am I missing any package or something?

I noticed that if I have "exit" in a bash script file., e.g. script.sh,that when the word "exit" is reached, and the script file being executed is not in the PATH nvironment, i.e. ". script.sh", the whole konsole shell profile is exited! What gives here? Is there another command compatible to "exit" to prevent this, or will I just have the leave the "." part in the PATH enviroment, which is, to my understanding, is not recommended? I desire for a "goto" function in bash script files

In linux, creating thread is same as process (clone()), except the virtual address space gets shared with the parent. If a running main process(thread) creates new thread, and if main thread exits, why should the new thread too exit? both are different entities, The same doesn't happen if the child thread exits, the parent thread would be alive.

Everytime I attempt to install anything, in any way, I'm given the following error message:
E: lib32nss-mdns: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 2
E: wine1.2: dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
I went into Synaptics Package Manager and told it to uninstall WINE in case that was what was causing the problems. It sort of half-uninstalled-it then gave me that exact same error message.I have two threads currently open on the forums - adjusting laptop brightness and flashing BIOS - and both problems hit a brick wall because of this same error message.

I've been trying for a couple days to install Ubuntu 10.04 on my desktop after using for a couple months on my laptop. My desktop has an Asus M2N32-SLI mobo, with a single 100GB HDD.I currently have Win7 installed and have resized the partitions using gparted from within the Ubuntu LiveCD.When I start the install from the icon on the desktop it goes until it asks where to install and then it doesn't show any drives at all. Most of the things I see pertaining to the nvidia chipset and HDDs talks about RAID. But I am not running any kind of RAID. Just a single HDD.

Being a total beginner to linux, I can't seem to find a decent guide on how to install these drivers without much hassle, even though I've been searching for almost couple of hours now.
First, my system specs, taken with Hard Info
Processor: 2x AMD Athlon(tm) II X2 240 Processor
Memory: 3091MB (1865MB used)
Operating System: Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS
-Display-
Resolution: 1360x768 pixels
OpenGL Renderer: GeForce GT 220/PCI/SSE2
X11 Vendor: The X.Org Foundation
-Multimedia-
Audio Adapter: HDA-Intel - HDA NVidia
Audio Adapter: HDA-Intel - HDA NVidia
-SCSI Disks-
HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GH22NS50
Now, I've installed the "default" (dunno if that would be the correct categorizing) driver with the "Hardware drivers" utility from System->Preferences->Hardware drivers because I've failed numerous times trying to install the package from nVidia site ; I would always get an error while trying to run the package :
"It seems that X server is running on your linux, please deactivate it to install this package" or something like that, but I'm sure it was about X running.

I recently downloaded and installed Ubuntu 10.10. I thought it was awesome...still do. OK, the problem is i was prompted to install some proprietary drivers and so i did but thats when the problems started. After reboot i couldn't get the GUI or gdm (not sure what to refer it to) to work. It goes directly to a terminal screen every time so i actually reinstalled Ubuntu and tried installing the drivers all different ways but no luck. i also can get into recovery mode and do low graphics. the driver version im trying to get working is nvidia 260.19.12. my graphics card is a geforce 7 series cant remember the number i have a 32bit processor.

I am attempting to install Ubuntu 64-bit and it keeps failing. This is my first 64-bit system, and have not had problems with installing x86 Ubuntu in the past. When the full install failed, I tried installing it within Windows and that also failed. I've attached the log from that attempt in this post (had to trim it down to fit the file limit though). I don't know if these are the same errors I was getting on full install as I didn't write those errors down...I can try again and post them if needed though.
