Ubuntu :: Natty: No Fonts In Emacs Over Ssh?

Jun 21, 2011

I successfully installed Natty on my PC and everything works great. Or nearly! If I connect to a server via ssh and try to open an emacs window on the server: no fonts are visualized (only empty boxes) and I get the following warnings:

Warning: Cannot convert string "-*-courier-medium-r-*-*-*-120-*-*-*-*-iso8859-*" to type FontStruct
Warning: Cannot convert string "-*-helvetica-medium-r-*--*-120-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1" to type FontStruct
- running emacs with the "no window" option -nw works fine (but I don't like working with emacs in the terminal window).

CentOS 5 :: Emacs 21 Fonts Missing After 5.3 Upgrade?

Apr 14, 2009

After upgrading to CentOS 5.3, emacs is unable to locate its default font. (I've been able to supply emacs with a command-line or config-file link to a different installed font, but that's a workaround, not a solution.) I'm not sure if this is a packaging error, an error in our repository configuration, or something else. Below I've inserted some info that seems relevant. I'd be happy to post other information as requested. I've also attached a probably unnecessary screenshot of emacs displaying little blocks instead of characters at the very bottom of this post. Here's the command-line error thrown by emacs on startup:

[Code]...

whether one of emacs's needed fonts has been moved from one package to another in the latest upgrade. Or (most likely) it's something else I haven't thought of.

CentOS 5 :: Emacs Displaying All Characters As Boxes - Fonts Broken?

Dec 30, 2010

In CentOS 5.4 (Final), emacs is displaying characters as little boxes. see attached screen shot. I searched the Web and found others have this same problem with emacs in CentOS 5.4 but have not found any solution. I installed emacs in a base CentOS Amazon EC2 instance as follows:

yum -y groupinstall "GNOME Desktop Environment"
yum -y install emacs
yum -y groupinstall emacs

This issue does not arise for me in Amazon EC2 instances running Red Hat, Fedora, or Ubuntu when I install emacs as I did here. I am not X font savvy

Ubuntu Installation :: Natty Upgrade, Now Firefox Fonts Don't Match Kde

Apr 29, 2011

So before natty, firefox 4 interface fonts matched the rest of my apps, but now they are huge! See the screen-shot to see what I mean. Anyone know how to get them to match again?

I think some of the browser fonts changed as well, but I know I can change them in the options menu.

Ubuntu :: Change Main Menu Height To Match Smaller Fonts?

Aug 30, 2010

I reduced my system font sizes from default 10 down to 8, but I want to also reduce the height of the Main Menu correspondingly. I've searched the forums and Google, but can't find a method for doing this. See the screenshots - both menu heights are exactly the same, but if I reduce the font size, I'd like the menu to shrink too.

I have checked by using -fn in xterm and there is no 9x15 font. This agrees with xlsfonts. How do I get the 9x15 font installed on this system.

Programming :: Match Datetime By The Minute (not An Exact Match By The Second)

Oct 21, 2010

I have the following query:

Code:
$sql="SELECT table1.datetime, table1.user_id, table2.ip, FROM table1,table2 WHERE id='$id' AND (table1.id = table2.id AND table1.datetime = table2.datetime)";

In table2 the datetime fields are about 1 to 2 seconds off due to the source of the data, which I cannot change.

Is it possible via a query match table1.datetime & table2.datetime by HH:MM (ie. to the minute instead of to the second)?

Ubuntu :: Over 1500 Fonts - Move Them To My /usr/share/fonts Folder

Jul 3, 2011

I have a folder with over 1500 fonts, I would like to move them to my /usr/share/fonts folder so that they can be used. Some are from Windows, some are just random extras. I've installed the msttcorefonts, but there are quite a few missing that make some wen pages look different.

How can I go about putting the fonts from my folder, into the appropriate /usr/share/fonts folder to be used? And how can I move them all? I can't drag and drop them, and mv FONT_NAME /usr/share/fonts for all of them will take a month or two. Is there a way to elevate my self to be able to just drag and drop them all? And which folder would they need to go into for them to be used in Chrome and Firefox?

OpenSUSE :: 3.2 Fonts Get Loaded To /usr/local/share/fonts?

Feb 23, 2010

I have just installed openSUSE 11.2 X86_64 on my laptop, I then used KDE to install lots of type 1 fonts for my printer. These get loaded to /usr/local/share/fonts/...These installed fonts are visible to KDE (KWRITE) and GIMP so I assume that the installation was O.K. When I start openOFFICE writer I do not see these fonts. The font selection appears to be the fonts located under /usr/share/fonts. I have not tried other ooo3 components. I assume that they are not going to see the fonts either.

I have searched google and it appears that /usr/local/share/fonts is the correct location for non-packaged fonts. Has anybody any idea what is wrong? I think I could move all the fonts to /usr/share/fonts and ooo3 would work but this seems to break the installation directory structure. I have considered symlinks but I don't like the idea of defining a font twice to Linux and creating the syslinks is more work than reinstalling the fonts if they are lost

General :: Sed - Match Even Characters Only?

Sep 3, 2010

Say I had a string like so

Let's say I only wanted to grab TAC and BDX the ones in the 2nd, 4th, and 6th spot.

Will grab the lines from the rest of the file assuming these are the only lines with capital letters at the very beginning of each line.

Will delete the first 'T'. What I want to do is learn how to just pick the even characters, T(T)A(A)C(C) & B(B)D(D)X(X).

Is there something like the {1} which can pick just the even or odd character matches?

General :: How To Get A Decent Emacs Setup

Mar 11, 2011

I am currently interested in switching from vim to emacs. One of the more compelling reasons for this is the smooth integration with a unix environment. The most experienced emacs users I have seen have a bash prompt at the bottom of their window, with stdout going to a buffer right above it. They then interact with the output of programs such as grep in interesting ways.I am on Ubuntu 10.04 and the default emacs environment does not seem to do much for me in the way of integration. For example, in the M-x shell mode, output from basic commands like ls produce lots of strange characters and hitting the up arrow does not go to previous commands.

General :: How To Open Emacs In Its Own Window

Aug 20, 2010

I am doing some project work and for that using the server at college with ssh connection. Every time I try to open emacs on the terminal after connecting, it opens emacs in the terminal itself i.e. not its own window. On my laptop on which ubuntu is installed, emacs always opens up in its own window an thats how I am used to it. There are several problems when it opens in the terminal like when I try to use commands such as M-V, actually terminal's view menu opens up, its very frustrating. Also I am pretty sure that the college server runs on red hat and has X installed on it. So what do I need to do to get my emacs window back.

General :: Web Search Engines And Emacs / Vim

Nov 8, 2010

The facilities offered by any text editor to look for a string are highly superior to those offered by search engines such as that of Google or the one used by LQ>Search. To only speak of the most one elementary that comes to my mind, you can reach 'john smith' by searching with the string 'hn smi' in any decente editor, but I know of no search engine that offers this feature.

On the other hand, I have always heard of the power of Vim and Emacs. For instance, they say there is no thing Emacs cannot do. Lets advocate to the job of adding Google searches the ability to find 'john smith' by using 'hn smi' as the matching pattern. Or to add regular expression capabilities. Could I use Vim/Emacs to solve this problem?

A little light into the meaning of my words: It would be Vim/Emacs the one in charge of making the Internet connection, connecting to Google and send appropriate commands go Google. Then, to look for my string, I would be directly using Vim/Emacs which, upon receiving my commands, would send the appropriate ones to Google and return control to me.

General :: Sed Search To Match NOT Several Strings?

Nov 15, 2010

I am using sed to process an ascii tcpdump file whereby each packet is processed into a line with the same number of columns and useful information is pulled out like the time, packet type, length, and also IP addresses, payload type and port numbers where appropriate. The time is already changed to seconds, followed by the protocol over ethernet, such as IP, IP6, ARP etc. and I can change anything it detects as IP, IP6 and ARP into some other string, pulling out necessary information depending on the protocol and payload. The beginning part of the search for IP starts with the sed search /([0-9][0-9]*.[0-9][0-9]*)[ ]IP[ ,] ... /, where time is in seconds and ellipses means more stuff, and likewise for IP6 and ARP.But how do I process the lines that are NOT IP, IP6 or ARP? (Specifically NOT /IP[ ,]/, /IP6[ ,]/ or /ARP[ ,]/.) So that I can format them into a string with the same number of columns.

General :: Making OS Match Hardware?

Jun 20, 2010

I have recently installed ubuntu 10.04 on my five year old desktop. Unfortunately, the official linux driver for my ATI X1600 card doesn't seem to support this ubuntu. There's an open source driver running now, but 3D applications run much slower than originally under windows. (which I can't seem to install on my sata raid harddisk anymore)

It's even so slow that I can't use those 3D applications anymore. I came to the conclusion that my computer is just too old for such a modern system as ubuntu 10.04. So I started looking for another version of linux. I tried the Linux Distribution Chooser, it pointed me at OpenSUSE 11.2. But I don't know, this program still looks kind of new. Too new for my computer.

I think that my computer needs an older version of linux, so that all the hardware will work properly. So I'd like to know if there's an older version of ubuntu/linux that still supports my hardware.

My computer was assembled from the following parts:
- DVDI LiteOn 16x/48x IDE bulk
- RAM 512 MB DDR/400 PC3200 ValueSelect
- HDDI 200GB 7200 Maxtor 6B200M0 8MB/SATA
- MB MSI k8T Neo2-F Athlon 64/939/DDR
- CPU AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 2.0Ghz/so939 BOX
- X GRA Sapphire R9600XT TV/DVI 256MB L-re

Does anyone know any distributions that fit this hardware? Some older versions of ubuntu perhaps? Something that allows me to install drivers that make 3D applications run a t normal speed? If someone knows about a Distribution Chooser that takes hardware into account, I'd also like to know.
