Ubuntu Installation :: Manually Configuring Printer / Driver Installation?
May 20, 2011
If I were to have a situation where I had installed the driver for a printer but when I went into printing on the control panel to "add" the printer the driver didn't show up - could I or should I consider manually editing some configuration file to get the printer recognized/ installed on the machine? If that were a good solution, how would I do it? What file would I look for? What would I edit in it? I know that first sentence is probably hard to read but I don't know how else to say it.

I have done a fresh install of Ubuntu 8.04 on my partners desktop PC and am attempting to get her printer working, so far no luck. Ubuntu does not list a specific driver for this printer in 8.04 Printer is a Canon laserjet model L1112E according to the label on the printer itself but the printed instruction leaflet calls it a LBP 3000.Canon website offers a linux driver for lbp3000.

I've bought a HP Photosmart printer, HP Photosmart wireless e-All-in-One printer - B110a and i've got a problem installing it properly. I'm using Debian 6.0 Squeeze. When i connect the printer, Debian doesn't recognize my printer as the Photosmart B109 printer for unknown reason. When i go to the site of HP and search for a driver, it directs me to this site:I've downloaded that latest hplip file as a .run file and installed it. My printer is recognized proparly, but when i try to print a colored image, it comes out black/white. Something is not crrect. Does anyone recognize this problem with this type HP printer?

I've tried to create a menu shortcut to start the application by using various commands:
sudo /usr/local/netbeans-6.9.1/bin/netbeans
and I also created a sh script that essentially attempts to execute the above command in a bash script so the command line states:
/home/myaccount/startnetbeans.sh
(startnetbeans.sh is defined as exectuable, also tried "sh "/home/myaccount/startnetbeans.sh"') and in all cases when this menu item is select it does absolutely nothing.
If I try any of these options from a terminal windows they work fine. Why the difference?

Does anyone havea good tutorial on Fedora's network scripts, how to edit them, in what order they are called, etc. What I want to do seems simple, but something in the bootup keeps changing it. Right now, I have an image of Fedora Core 7 created in a server with 2 Ethernet cards. I need to specify static IP addresses for each card. Thats simple, and I did that. Now, heres the tricky part, I need to be able to clone this image and place it onto other exact duplicates of the hardware, and have all of the settings stay the same.
What happens here, is that eth0 and eth1 are stored somewhere as devices, and upon boot on a different machine, the Fedora will mount new network cards(different MAC addresses) as eth1 and eth2. It then mvoes my ifcfg-eth0/1 to a backup, and creates two brand new network setting's files, which initialize to DHCP. This creates an issue, becuase these machines do not have monitors nor keyboards attached, nor is their a DHCP server, so its a pain when I swap the machine out, to have to go in with a keyboard/mouse/monitor and reconfigure the network settings before I can connect to it over the LAN.
So does anyone have any advice on how to do this? No matter what i tried, booting the image in a new PC caused Fedora to create two new devices and create brand new network settigns for them, both initialized to DHCP. Hell, I wouldn't care if it created brand new devices, if it would initialize them to static IP addresses that I am expecting.

I'm setting up a netbook for somebody (in another country!) and one of the last hurdles is the printer setup. I only have the netbook and not the printer with me. I know that the printer is a HP PSC 1215 All-In-One Printer but there seems to be a Catch-22 that I need to have the printer connected in order to be able to set this up using the GUI tools. How do I work around this? As a minimum I just want to enable printing, although scanning would be a bonus.

I'm trying to install Kubuntu 9.10 on my machine (I had the same problem with Kubuntu 9.04). The machine is:
- Core 2 Quad 6600
- Nvidia 7600 GS
- Two disk seagate 500 in mirroring raid software
When I try to install Kubuntu, after disk partition, my system dosn't see the CD. He tell me to insert disk into drive but I doesn't touch it. I resolved this mounting an external hard disk into /cdrom. After this, the installation continues until the step "select and install software". At this step, the installation procedure tell me an error. During this error, in the other console, I've this:
Code:
Jan 19 21:58:09 in-target: Alcuni pacchetti non possono essere installati. Questo può voler dire
Jan 19 21:58:09 in-target: che è stata richiesta una situazione impossibile oppure, se si sta

Canon MX320, MX330, MX860 printer installation on Kubuntu Lucid 10.04 AMD64 bit. I am sure Ubuntu Lucid is similar. Once I upgraded to Lucid 10.04 AMD64 bit I found that getting a Canon Pixma MX printer installed was not going to be easy. So I thought it help others if I posted my experience here. To pull this off you will need both the Debian package, (.deb), and the source package from either
Canon Europe: [URL]... Or Canon Australia: [URL]... NOTE: The only reason to get the source is to access the ppd files. They are in the Debian package but it is a lot more work to walk newbies through unpacking the .deb. Since there are errors in the source code it makes impossible to compile a driver. Therefore, you will need to install the 32bit Debian package and force the architecture, then add the correct printer driver from the ppd file in the source package. While these instructions worked for me there are a few assumption I make which mat affect your outcome. My MX860 has a wireless network connection.
In other words I have no idea if this will or will not work on a USB attached printer. (If someone would be kind enough to post back if they get that configuration working that would be cool.) The other assumption is that the general reader is relatively new to Lunix and the command line interface. The commands were cut and pasted from my working kconsole, so they should work for anyone. Here we go:........

I am running a Dell Dimension 3000 and I intend to install Ubuntu on it. On it, there is a partition, Dell Utility Partition, which I am hesitant to overwrite. The main partition which I want to install Ubuntu on I formatted in ext4. I try to install Ubuntu from the live cd, but it won't allow me to strictly use the ext4 partition. It insists to either use the entire drive or to have me manually choose the partition. How would I go about doing that? I relatively new to Linux in general

How can I set up an encrypted LVM without using the "Guided - Use entire disk" option of the alternate installer.
My drive is quite big and I would like to be able to have my encrypted LVM as well as an extra LUKS encrypted partition which I could mount whenever needed. Unfortunately the options in the alternate installer do not allow me to do this without using up the entire disk.

I did a "dirty install" of Maverick over my existing Lucid system. That went very well and I am having no problems with Maverick. However, this morning, I decided to clean off the old Lucid kernels. In the past, after installing a new kernel on the same Ubuntu release, I have done this by running "aptitude search 2.6.32-24", for example, then running "sudo aptitude purge" for the kernel and header files it found.
Now that I have changed releases, aptitude no longer finds the Lucid kernels installed on my system, even though they still reside in the file system and show up on the grub2 menu. So, how do I manually find everything necessary to delete for the old Lucid kernels?

I want to set up ubuntu 10.10 on a computer WITHOUT Internet access.I also need to install a package on it but it has several dependant libraries (eg libX11-dev)If i just have the names of those libraries & the package, where can i find them, so that they can be downloaded onto a pendrive & then installed onto the comp? (What would a library file look like after download?)
Also after i have copied the files onto the other comp (assuming that it was possible), how do i install the library? Would synaptics recognise that i have installed this library if done manually by this method?

I'm just trying to install Ubuntu server 9.10 to a logical volume manager partition. I have two physical disks of 250GB - each has a 10GB primary partition and 240GB logical partition for LVM
I created partions using 'manual partitioning'.
It shows:
LVM VG grpA 240GB
LVM VG grpB 240GB
SCSI1 (sda) 250GB
#5 logical 240GB K lvm
[Code].....
I want '/' (i.e root) to be on a logical volume in the lvm 'grpA' (on disk sda).
But the installer does not offer creation of Logical Volumes or their format - only seems to go as low as volume group. If I try continuing installer complains that 'no root file system is defined'.
Does anyone know how I create the LV and install with root there?
(On another machine with 9.04 I used the guided partitioning with use entire disk and lvm - that just worked putting root in the lvm... but this current machine needs a specific layout).

When I try to install fedora 11 from the Live CD I get the hwaddress error and cannot continue. As far as I know there is no fix for that other than installing from the full DVD, but I don't have the facility to do that. What I would like to know is if it is possible to install fedora manually for eg. create the partitions with something like fdisk and copy all the files over from the live disc to the hdd and then install grub to start fedora and use it as if it had been installed normally.
Sorry if this is a stupid question. In my head I have this idea that anaconda is some helper program to install fedora and that it should be possible to do it yourself with the right commands.
