(Keep in mind that I am a total beginner with Linux)This computer comes with Windows 7, which I seek to wholly replace, not partition. Dec 2, 2010Is there a way using dpkg or apt-get to segregate user application packages from system packages? What I envision is an /apps directory structure that can be the install target for selected packages so not to "clutter" the storage areas for the system administration files/packages - maybe even with permissions set so that (a GROUP of) users could install packages on an Ubuntu server w/o SysAdmin guidance. This could also allow 1)system upgrades with or w/o including these packages, and 2)the sharing of /apps (via NFS) among common Ubuntu systems. Is this doable using the dpkg or apt maintenance tools?

Jun 4, 2011A couple days ago the update manager alerted me to a series of updates that were needed so I installed them. I didn't try printing anything until the next morning to find that both of my network printers were GONE! I went to add them back and they installed just fine but any time I try to print I get "Not Conencted" errors. But if I navigate to the printers directly (they both have web interfaces) they are fully functional and print just fine (self test print samples). Ubuntu 11.04 can see the printers when I search the network. I have tried CUPS and the Preferences/Printer/Add method and both add the printers just fine and let me do any type of configuration except I can't print.
I am not sure what was updated that might cause this type of thing. What can I do? Printers are both Brother network enabled printers and have worked 100% perfectly until the last update.

But,nothing has solved my problem..many suggested that it may be due to low drive space..but i cant use the mv commands too..really,i'm so helpless and its been three days,after usin my laptop..

Is there a software in slackware packages to show these sensors reading in X windows similar to wmsupermon? I don't want to compile it, if slackware has something same that i can just use.

Nov 17, 2010I recently upgraded from F13 to F14 using "preupgrade". This is the first time I've used preupgrade. So far, F14 is running OK. There are some leftovers from F13 and I'm wondering if this is correct.
Q1: There are 176 F13 packages remaining. [alfrugal@localhost Documents]$ rpm -qa | grep fc13 | wc -l 176 Is this OK? FWIW, after the upgrade, I ran "package-cleanup --orphans" as recommended by the "preupgrade" page on the Fedora Project wiki.
Q2: Also, my GRUB menu was correctly updated for F14, but it still contains the three entries it had for F13. Is it normal for the preupgrade process to require the user to clean up the obsolete entries from the GRUB menu?

Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.I've tried changing the servers to MAIN and others, and still no way to solve it. My problem is : I have packed the whole stuff into a Slackware .tgz, that places it in /usr/local/Impact, and placed a calling script in /usr/local/bin,

I can run this thing from within its directory... but I do not like messing within the directories of my applications, this is why I sent this to /usr/local, and placed a calling script in /usr/local/bin...

Mar 19, 2010With GPT partitioning more and more needed (MSDOS partitions not supporting drives larger than 2TB), and fdisk and sfdisk not supporting GPT, and parted still being cranky, I'm looking for another partitioning tool. There is a project called "gdisk". But I can't find an Ubuntu package for it. I guess I'll have to build that one from source. Is there a place to suggest adding the package? how to build my own Ubuntu packages. Or if I can find enough docs on the partition table structures, maybe I can write my own that will be even easier to use from the command line
