i m trying to install ubuntu in windows vista after running the window. a installaton process is started and after that installation ask for REBOOT, when i restart my system and select UBUNTU 10.04 after counting 5 secs, appears a screen of black colour with some commands and stupped here as fix screeen.......what can i doo for installation.????

I really like it now but at first I just dual-booted it, and now I want Vista gone. I know it's unnecessary to have just one OS but my hard-drive isn't particularly big and I'd prefer to have Ubuntu by itself. Can anyone tell me how to eliminate vista and leave Ubuntu as my sole operating system (I've all my files from computer on another computer so I don't have to worry about losing anything).

The main problems were that GRUB was installed also on Windows partition, and Win partition appears as FAT16 and not NTFS Here is the output of boot_info_script, I would say that everything seems OK.

I installed Ubuntu 10.04/32-bit desktop on a system with a working Vista x64 installation. I had problems installing Ubuntu. I tried wubi, which didn't work at all... just booted right into Vista with no ubuntu boot option. I tried doing a full Ubuntu install, and it never gave me the "install side by side" option. Finally, I shrunk my Vistax64 boot partition to give some room for Ubuntu. Ultimately, I installed Ubuntu 10.04/32-bit desktop. I had to use the "Manully create partitions" option during installation, and created an ext4 root partition and a swap partition. The Ubuntu install worked but now I'm unable to boot into Vista x64.
After the Ubuntu 10.04 / 32-bit desktop install, the Grub2 boot loader came up. It boots into Ubuntu just fine, but when I select Vista I get a very fast blue screen, then it reboots. I tried "last known good" on the vista boot, didn't work I tried a safe mode vista boot, but get the blue screen right after it loads the "crcdisk.sys" file.
i have recently started my masters degree program and i have to install fedora 11 for one of my courses. The problem is when i try to install fedora 11 on my laptop, it wipes out my windows vista installation. I want to keep vista. I have a sony vaio laptop model VGN-FW340D. 4GB RAM and 400 GB HD. i first shrink my hard drive to free up around 100 GB. Then i run fedora 11 DVD and let it make the partitions on my free space.. I have tried everything.. I chose use free space the first time, but i didnt work, it wiped out my vista, next time i chose custom layout and defined boot, root and swap partitions , but again it wiped out my vista.. I have read many guides to dual boot vista and fedora and have carried them out step by step, but nothing works.... Also i dont have vista installation DVD, i just have the recovery CDs, so everytime it wipes out my vista, i have to do system recovery, ive been trying for a week now, and its driving me crazy, i asked a friend of mine to help me out, he has dual boot system, and he tried it and it did the same thing, wiped out my vista... i just have one drive C: with two partitions, one small partitions which contains recovery files, and the rest of the partition has vista.......

Everytime I try to boot it after a restart, it goes through the setup process until it reaches the following blue-screen error message:

View 7 Replies View RelatedI want to dualboot my HP laptop with Windows 7 and Ubuntu. The problem is that the harddrive had 4 primary partitions. So i had to delete the Recovery and HP TOOLS partions. I did that after creating my system recovry CDS. The "install alongside another operating system" option showed up. And i was really happy for about 1 minute until i discovered that it said Windows Vista loader! So now i have this:
sda 640GB harddrive
sda1 Windows 7 loader
sda2 Windows Vista loader
And when im trying to install a dualboot the Windows 7 loader dosent show up! It wants to install Vista loader but i dont have that operating system. I have read that 7 and Vista sometimes gets mixed up in GRUB can this be the case here? Is it safe for me to install Vista loader with Ubuntu 10.10?
I have always use dual-booting vista--ubuntu, I am getting bit tired of windows, so I want to install ubuntu, specially lucid is coming soon. I want to have the possibility to install windows in case I will need it in the future, like working with Visual Studio, ubuntu always detect if windows is installed, if windows is installed first, does windows also detect if ubuntu is installed ?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have understood that Vista does not always play nice with third party partitioners and that it was best to use the tools *within* Vista to change its size.
I do not know, but the same might apply to Windows 7? Anyway I understand Windows 7 also has its own resize tools.
My advice to newcomers with Vista (or Windows 7) has been to use the Windows inbuilt tools to resize and then to leave un partitioned space on the drive, because until recently the Ubuntu Live CD has included an option 'Install into un partitioned space' or similar. Which was very easy.
However, with Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop CD the same option does not exist, so for beginners, or any nervous newcomer, the only practical option in most cases is to use the 'resize' facility in the Ubuntu installer.
This is a circular situation, if the Ubuntu facility resize is recommended to be avoided.
I would very much like to avoid having to tell them to use the 'advanced' option. Most of them are pretty jittery, from having used Windows for years.
I am aware that the 10.10 Alternate CD still includes 'install into un partitioned space'. Do I now tell people they need both a Live CD for initial tests and then also an Alternate CD for install?
They would see the install invitation in the Desktop CD live session and have to disregard it.
The Ubuntu 10.10 installer is, on the face of it, getting more friendly towards nervous newcomers.
Are the warnings about third party partitioners still relevant?
trying to install F14 on a computer that has Vista on it. I chose the option for it to shrink my existing partition since it takes up the whole hard drive. On the next screen I choose my install drive... then it asks me (dont remember verbatim) by how much do I want to shrink the current partition? I put 200 (I assume its GB... is it MB?) and then it said shrink failed and then takes me back. Is that question on how much I want to shrink have to do with how much space I'm putting on the new F14 partition or how much I'm leaving on the windows partition?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI've never tried installing any other operating system on my desktop so I'm not sure if it's a 9.10 bug (probably not), but whenever I choose any of the options after the ubuntu cd has been loaded at startup it goes to a black screen with the underscore at the top, and promptly reboots. At this point in time I can just boot back into windows or get to the same selection screen off of the cd.I've tried burning 3 seperate cd's and at the moment and trying to boot them on my laptop (but not working... hrm). I'm thinking about redownloading the iso in a couple minutes.

Thing is, grub didn't install! I'm pretty sure a full install of ubuntu 10.10 in on a partition that I can't access. To complicate matters further, loading Vista necessitated a restart when it installed a "generic volume driver" by itself. Restarting vista doesn't show any difference (obviously since vista can't see linux formatted partitions).

i have just installed fedora over a existing copy of ubuntu. The problem is i cant boot in to vista any more. i have looked over many forums trying to fix it but still wont work.the attachments are of screen shots i have with the details of the hard drive partitions.i am able to mount the hard drives and have all the data still and still have the boot folder for vista but just cant figure out how to boot in to vista.i also get the error " error 1: filename must be an absolute pathname press any key to continue" i get this error when i try to change the boot partitons

View 2 Replies View RelatedSystem: Lenovo R61i, that had Ubunta installed, removed and Vista Home Pre. installed. Plenty of hardware power. Want to install a Knoppix 6.0.1 from an existing CD I have. I want to be able to run both systems on the laptop (dual boot)? I have partitioned the hard drive using vista, so there is now a partition that I believe is Lenovo rescue, the main large C space, and the new partition about 6.4 gb that vista shrank out that is not assigned. When I try to install the Knoppix it just keeps loading in and ends up running live off the CD without installing to the hard drive.
I have stopped the loading sequence in different places, but don't know what to enter or where. I also wanted to install it onto my 64 gb flash drive that has nothing installed but comes up showing that it is fat 32. I have tried to install to the flash drive from the live running Knoppix under install to usb drive, it finds the drive, I select it, and the next window says there is no such file. So, that's my story and I'm stickin to it. All I want to do is get this system onto the laptop or flash so I don't ever have to deal with Microsoft Windows again!
I wanted to start exploring web development and perhaps hosting my own server as well as learning about linux and all the things that go with it so I downloaded the ubuntu 9.1 Server edition and burned it to a CD. I thought to put it on my Dell laptop as it is newer than my main PC and I could bring it to and fro between class. It had Vista installed and I definitely wanted to keep that in the meantime until I got more familiar with Ubuntu. The laptop has a 320GB hard drive with a 10 GB recovery partition. I went ahead and formatted the 10GB to make room for ubuntu. Also I was able to "shrink" the main windows partition by 16GB to make even more room. I could not combine the two small drives but alas. I had hoped to use the 16GB partition for the main install and the 10GB for a necessary swap drive (I am completely new to all this).
So I reboot on the server CD and get to the partition section. I was following this guide here: [url]
It seemed I did not want to do anything "guided" or "automatic" because the options were listing the entire drive and again i wanted to keep my vista untouched. So I go to manual partitioning and although the guide didn't go into enough detail I went ahead and assigned an "ext2" filetype to the larger partition and a "swap" to the smaller partition. Then I went to write changes to disk and after completing one of the two successfully the installer failed to configure the swap drive. I don't know why. I restarted to make sure windows was OK and surely it was not, as I got the dreaded "missing operating system" screen. I ran the windows recovery CD and lo and behold it could not find any drives at all, much less repair them. The data I had on the vista partition were not particularly vital, but it would be nice to have it back.
So my questions are, is there a way to recovery the windows partition? And how is the correct way to configure a dual boot system with Vista and Ubuntu 9.1 Server edition?
I'm stuck with installing Fedora Core I have 2 hard drives both 80Gb I want to install a fresh copy on one of the drives to do a dual boot I have vista on the main hard drive this is where I am at Installation requires partitioning of your hard drive by default, a partitioning layout is chosen which is reasonable for most users. Of course I denied and stopped this installation, but now when starting my computer, the boot menu gives Vista, Ubuntu and Suse as a choice, but if I choose Vista, the Suse installation process is starting instead of Windows, there is no way to get Windows started (fortunately Ubuntu is working so that I can write this message).How can I get Windows starting?

I am trying to boot up Vista Home Premium from USB since my internal (bootable) CD-RW drive has failed and I cannot boot up Vista from CD.
I have Ubuntu running in the Windows partition and all my windows files are in there so I don't want to do a full installation of Ubuntu (yet).
I formatted an 8GB USB stick into two partitions
I then copied over to /dev/sdb1 all files from a Vista CD using an external CD-RW drive (which is not recognised as bootable on USB port).
In my Dell BIOS settings I changed the boot sequence to be bootable from USB disk first.
then I tried to reboot Vista installation in the USB stick.
But I get this message ..."this is not a bootable disk .. insert a bootable floppy"
So I could not boot up the Vista installation files.
When the boot flag is "on" in a GParted created partition does this make the partition DOS bootable for Vista installation?
My question is - What utility in Ubuntu 10.10 can create a DOS bootable partition on a USB stick? It seems that the MBR might have been overwritten when I installed Grub 2.0.
I can Grub dual boot between Windows and Ubuntu but I can't get very far with Windows .. stalls in safe mode.
So a Vista repair is called for. I would prefer not to reinstall Vista afresh at this stage.

And wubi can't pick up where it left off, you have to uninstall to reinstall, which sucks tremendously.
