View 3 RepliesI'm trying to update an older laptop for my nephew. It was running Hardy Heron (Ubuntu 8.04 LTS) successfully.
However, after installing a clean copy of Lucid Lynx (Ubuntu 10.04 LTS), the boot process halts almost immediately with a black screen. There is no blinking cursor and no hard-drive activity.
When I hold down the "Shift" key after the rebooting the computer, I'm able to edit the grub2 boot options.
When I remove the "quiet" boot option, I'm able to see about a page of text before the boot process halts and displays the black screen. Here is the last bit of text that appears just before the black screen:

At this point, the font style changes slightly. Then the text is replaced by the solid black screen. There is no blinking cursor, and the hard drive activity ceases.
I've tried booting in rescue mode: This also halts at a solid black screen.
This is an older laptop: I had to boot the installation disc with the boot option "noapic" in order for the installation disc to run.
However, the installation seemed to run normally. I was able to finish installing the system. But, after removing the installer disc and rebooting, we were met with that solid black screen almost immediately after booting.
I used the minimal install disc: [URL]
I've verified the MD5 checksum for the disc image. And I've successfully used this same disc to install Ubuntu for my mother.
But my little nephew is left without a usable system.
Could we be missing a boot option?
After upgrading to 10.04 today, booting halts with the drive unavailable for mounting S to skip bla bla message. The drive in question is an Ipod, and didn't see it in fstab or mtab.

I downloaded ubuntu and the software to make it possible to boot from usb. I started the laptop up selected the option to boot from the usb. But now it says "marking TSC unstable due to TSC halts in idle" and then on the next line it says "switching to clocksource hpet" and it has been like this for hours. The laptop specs are: Intel Core 2 CPU T5600 @ 1833MHz with 1GB of RAM.

I would like to set the mount point during boot, what I can I do? Insert a fstab line? I wanted a card that was supported with native drivers - no messing with ndiswrapper and such. The Trendnet TEW-423 is posted as working out of the box with the Realtek chip RTL8185. With the card inserted, Ubu 9.04 and 9.10 freeze at boot time. 9.10 freezes when the logo appears, 9.04 freezes at the arrow which comes after the logo. Remove the card and full boot is enabled. Obviously this card is not working out of the box.
I have a dual boot configuration (WinXp and Ubuntu 9.10) on a PC (my video card is an ATI Radeon 4850), i have been configuring ubuntu for the past 5 days and everything was working fine. Today i installed Screenlets (through synaptic manager), and i was adding a screenlet when the screen froze. I could move the cursor, but couldn't click anything. I left it for about 5 minutes to see if anything changes, and since it was still frozen, i did a hard reset (restart from the button).
In the grub menu i chose the normal linux boot (not the recovery mode), it loads up the welcome splash screen (with the tribal sound and the bar moving), and then the little circle cursor appears, turns into the normal arrow cursor and it hangs. I can move the cursor, but the screen is stuck with the ubuntu splash screen.I restarted (again from the button) and went into recovery mode, but in the recovery console i can't select any option from the keyboard (i tried hitting the cursor keys, enter, nothing happens). I hit ctrl+alt+delete and it restarted the system (so the keyborad does function). In XP i found a recommendation to restart the Xserver, so i rebooted in the Ubuntu splash screen, hit ctrl+alt+F2, logged in, typed the command i found:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorgrestarted (sudo reboot), and got to the splash screen, which after playing the tribal sounds, turned semi-transparent (i could see the desktop wallpaper, taskbars and a black rectangle where my cairo-dock should appear), but again it freezed, no cursor. I hit ctrl+alt+F2 to go into console mode, and uninstalled screenlets (since it was the last thing i installed before the initial freeze).Screenlets uninstalled properly (i used sudo apt-get remove screenlets) so i rebooted, but it still freezes at the ubuntu screen splash (this time it wasn't transparent, just the standard screen splash). So i tried getting into console mode again, but this time my screen displays lines in a lot of colors, randomly (probably a failure from the video adapter)
I am running a Dell desktop with Windows XP Home Edition, which is up to date. My security suite is the Comcast-branded version of Norton 360. Following the directions in a Smart Computing article, I downloaded wubi.exe and ran it. I get the options screen, used the default partition of 17 GB, chose a password, and then I'm directed to reboot. I reboot and get the bootup option page. So far, so good. But then I have a problem. I click on Ubuntu and then I see a white three-sector circle against a black background. It pulses a little bit for a few seconds and then nothing happens. It just sits there, with no hard drive activity. I waited for a while, with no activity, then shut the PC down, deleted Ubuntu and re-downloaded everything. Still have the same result.

Its a full install no partitions (i jumped straight into the deep end) However when i start her up, she gets to the loading screen of Ubuntu and the Welcome sound, blurts out of my speakers, but then repeats and repeats before stopping... the system then freezes, keyboard and mouse stop responding. I attach a picture of my future disk partitioning,as I thought it should be. As you can see, the first two partitions are 2 different windows installations. At the end of the disk, I have specified a partition as ext3 104855 MB (sda9) and swap 8192 MB (sda. What should the the mount point of sda9 be? Should I specify a partition for /, /boot, /home, /tmp, ...etc? Or it is ok to make mount point '/'?

If the destination (which is my workstation desktop) 172.16.6.15 is offline when the server tries to boot, the entire boot procedure halts with the following message: Unable to find suitable address. mountall: mount <destination> terminated with status 2 The problem is that my server runs headlessly, and every time something silly like this happens where you'd normally expect the OS to continue regardless, I'm forced to plug a monitor in and diagnose on console
So my question: Is there any way to make it proceed with the boot normally despite the host being unreachable? I could probably chuck a mount command into crontab or /etc/rc.local or a /etc/network/if-up.d script, but isn't this the way it really should be done (/etc/fstab)? If so, then we shouldn't expect the entire boot to halt just because a network share can't be mounted, right? While on the topic of a headless ubuntu server 10.10 not booting without some kind of intervention, I have yet another issue: If the server goes down without proper shutdown (power failure, for example) the grub menu displays the kernel choices and there's no countdown timer. Instead, I have to manually press enter to continue the boot. Is there any way around this? Clearly this should not be the case for a server distribution
All of a sudden my laptop decided to not bootup. It stops while loading syslogd. I started up in single user mode and added a few echo statements in rc.syslog so it looks like:

This means that execution of the script doesn't seem to get past the "/usr/sbin/syslogd" line. Well at least thats the case in the first 2-3 minutes. Afterwards my screen gets flooded with the next echo I placed "caught in the loooooop!".
Again, stating the obvious, the script reads on and gets caught in the while loop. obviously there is no /dev/log and something must have messed up the execution of syslogd. what could that be it?
Recently I was fiddling around with jackd and trying to setup a jack-rack on my laptop. To do that I had to recompile alsa-driver from scratch in order to include the virtual soundcard driver. I also had to rebuild the mainline kernel to add low-latency (I did not switch to kernel-rt). Overall, I've been running with a custom kernel more than 2 months now and never had a problem with syslogd startup. The new low latency custom kernel is just like the previous one but with only difference the low latency setting. With the low latency kernel I've been using the pc for approx a week and have done 5+ reboots. So the problem appeared now out of nowhere...
If I disable rc.syslog and I start the pc, and then start it up, syslogd with execute nicely and quickly as if there was no problem, ever...
I am using Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04 (64 bits) in my Asus U30JC laptop (Core i3 M350, intel 4500MHD + nvidia 310M with nvidia Optimus, 4GB RAM). I am content with Lucid and I don't want to upgrade to 10.10 for now. However I read that the new 2.6.36 kernel has some good improvements, such as improving system interactivity while intensive I/O (such as copying large files), and improved energy management for i3/i5 processors (which I hope translates into more battery time, which is a problem of Ubuntu vs Win7 in my laptop).
I discovered I had 2 options: compile the kernel myself, or use the Ubuntu Kernel PPA (maintained by the Ubuntu Kernel Team). I decided to use the PPA, so I added it to my software sources and installed the generic"linux-lts-backport-natty" kernel (2.6.36-1).
Package installation went fine, and after reboot, I could log in to the desktop no problem. Everything seemed fine, but after a few minutes, the system freezes completely: mouse did not move, none of the indicators moved, even Ctrl + Alt + F1 did not work.Where is the log file where there might be a message related to the freeze? Do you think that the kernel developers would try to fix a bug that probably only affects people running the 2.6.36-1 kernel on a distribution that was not built around it?
I tried out many distros on my desktop before experimenting with my oshiba Satellite A665 laptop with integrated intel graphics. Everything worked out as normal until I was testing Ubuntu on a live cd, I clicked install and it sent me back to the login screen before I had made an account. So I then chose to restart and it started glitching so I had to manually power off. Ever since then whichever distros I try to install, they face numerous errors. On Ubuntu and Peppermint they freeze on the 5 dots installation part and Linux Mint just has a permanent black screen. Even the current Peppermint OS (only distro i have)hangs on the 5 dots when trying to boot onto the computer. This has resulted me in a computer that cant do anything, i've tried the noquiet and nosplash options but they don't seem to work. I was thinking of installing Windows and maybe erasing the disk by installing another distro later?

However, it would not work because I didn't have the proprietary graphics driver for my graphics card (Nvidia Quadro NVS 3100M). But halts with no rootfs defined and says i need to define one. However it wont continue to boot obviously so am unable to do so. My PC does have raid but its switched off in the bios. I know dual booting is one way to go but would prefer initially to have it in the file. I can boot into the demo version and there is an install option there but doesnt offer my boot disk.

As far as I investigated the nForce driver is in 11.3, but in this case why the installation hangs (no reset button, only power off). Sorry I cannot provide you a log, becuase the installation procedure goes to the restart, the system restarts, and Grube says error 15 or 21.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install (L)ubuntu on an old AMD 1.66GHz based HP laptop, to dual boot with Windows XP. However I'm running into an issue that I haven't come across on any other machine before where after selecting "Install Lubuntu" from the main boot menu, it moves to the scrolling dots splash/loading screen and after ~30 sec or a minute it freezes. There is no error, it doesn't reboot or eject the disk even after several hours of sitting on that splash screen, with the dots frozen, no CD activity, and no HDD activity. I get the same result if I try to boot it as a LiveCD as well.
Can someone help diagnose whats going on? Is it possible changing some boot options will allow it to install? I'm not quite sure where to go with this one.

After selecting "install a new system or upgrade an existing system" the installation process completely halts at "waiting for hardware to initialize." I looked this up and tried various boot options which frankly, I don't know what exactly they do. Setting "nomodeset" changed nothing as did various others like "noefi". When "ignore_loglevel" was set, the progress went a little further past "waiting for hardware to initialize" stopping after this:

From what I've gathered from looking this issue up for the past few days, it is probably a graphics card issue. However, I did remove my graphics card and tried using the input directly to the motherboard and had similar issues. I'm not sure what other information is relevant but I can try to relay as much as I can if it is needed.
I just downloaded and installed Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Edition for my Toshiba Tecra A4 laptop, but the system first froze at the default desktop picture (nothing was loaded except the arrow). Tried restarting only to find it frozen on the purple boot screen again with only the mouse arrow loaded (I can move it around).
Note: The same thing happened when I tried to boot Ubuntu from CD (without installing)
After an online upgrade from f11 to f13, on rebooting the setup attempts to configure the wireless connection and fails with a not very illuminating "error configuring your network interface" notice, offering no option but to go back and try again, which of course fails again with the same error.
Wireless card is a D-link that works fine with the ath5k driver in f11.
how I can get out of this vicious cycle and proceed with booting the upgrade?
I have a Toshiba Satellite A205 laptop 2GB RAM, running Meerkat 32bit. Used 2 previous versions of Ubuntu also.For the past few months, about 75% of the time, on boot up the screen will freeze before I get to the login screen. No key combos (ctrl alt backspace, alt prnt screen, REISUB) work, I have to take out the battery, unplug and restart. It always boots normally the second time, whether I boot normally or attempt repair.I recently installed Linux Mint 10 on dual boot, and the same thing happens with Mint.I connect to the Internet via wireless, not sure if that is significant or not.The problem does not appear immediately after installation, but only after updates and a couple reboots.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI was wondering if there is any way to SSH from one computer to another and completely bypass a router or any other network infrastructure. The reason I ask is because my robot ( same one in this post ) often needs to change which wireless network it automatically connects to, however it is getting annoying to have to drag out a monitor and plug it in along with a keyboard and mouse every time this needs to happen. Instead I'd much rather just plug my laptop into the other computer, SSH in and change the network myself.
So I thought I would ask you kind people if this is possible. The robot's computer has unused ethernet and USB ports, and I'd like to use those if at all possible (and with linux, anything is possible! -- sorta). I thought about doing something with ad-hoc, but this would limit my range (in infrastructure mode I can control the thing anywhere there is internet), and is to be avoided.
I have a Ubuntu 10.04 fresh installation on my HP laptop. Installation successful and boot OK. But the desktop randomly freeze. During freeze(about 15s each time), all programs are not responsive. Packets from my local network are just routed through ppp0 and now the fun part starts: I want to MARK (netfilter...) all packets originating from one specific user on that box in order to use another routing table that will contain a default route via the ppp1 interface.Marking seems to work fine as does the second routing table. But quite mysteriously (at least for me), the packets sent out on ppp1 contain the wrong source IP address, namely the address associated with ppp0.So here is what ifconfig and friends tell me:Network interfaces:

My problem is that within a few minutes of booting the machine, it freezes. The keyboard and mouse do nothing; the keyboard LEDs do not light up. Whatever is on the screen stays there - X or a console. Ctrl-Alt-Del does not work; neither does Alt-SysRq-REISUB. The machine stops responding to ping and won't accept any remote connections. I have to do a hard reset with the power button.
Sometimes it happens during the boot process; sometimes it's a few minutes afterward, and I get to look at log files for a while until it stops responding.
Here's what I've tried:
It happens in recovery mode as well as a regular startup. It happened when I booted from an Ubuntu Server CD and did rescue mode. I ran memtest86+ and it completed successfully with no errors (and it didn't freeze) It doesn't happen if I just sit in the grub menu for a while. I've looked at what log files I can; there's nothing that looks like a severe error, and it fails at different times during the boot process, so it doesn't seem like whatever's going wrong is getting logged. It happens with the latest kernel I have (2.6.31-19-generic), as well as the oldest (2.6.28-16-generic) It seems like there must be some hardware issue, but I'm not sure where to start looking.
I set the auto timeout on my dual boot machine to 1 second. It will not allow me to select anything but the default option I had set, which is Windows XP. I would love to be able to get back into Ubuntu, but I can't.I tried logging in through a live CD I had for Xubuntu v9.1, but I was unable to successfully run "Startup Manager" to change the timeout back to 3+ seconds.
