After upgrading to 10.04 today, booting halts with the drive unavailable for mounting S to skip bla bla message. The drive in question is an Ipod, and didn't see it in fstab or mtab.
View 1 RepliesI recently downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 and installed it onto a 250gb removable disk using a 240gb ext4 partition and a 10gb swap space.
I am using a Sony VAIO (VPCF115FM) and it would appear that my BIOS is very limited as to bootup options. I can only choose internal HDD/external device/network/CD Drive. I cannot check whether or not my BIOS is able to recognize the external ext4 (but from experiences so far it would seem that it cannot)
After much tinkering i got my internal windows 7 to recognize the drive as ext3 (Used ext2 volume manager to add a registry entry for the drive). However, I need to unplug and replug in the drive for it to be recognized, if i leave it plugged in from booting it shows up as unrecognized.
Summary: I would like to be able to boot up Ubuntu off this external drive, but as of now it would appear that my BIOS is unable to recognize the drive. Windows can recognize it as ext3, and I can access contents of the ubuntu partition from windows.
how I could get this working that would be fantastic, i've tried formatting the drive to other filesystems (ext3,ext2,XFS) but none of them would work either, so any information would be sweet
I have an internal disk with Linux installed and a removable drive bay for swapping out my windows disks. I'd like to get grub to map one option to the bay and be able to boot whatever disk is in there.
Right now it's mapped by id "/dev/disk/by-id/ata-ST3250310AS_6RY00KB61" but I noticed there is a by-path option. I am not sure how to use it and the documentation isn't very detailed. Is by-path a good way to do this or is there some other way to get this to work?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to update an older laptop for my nephew. It was running Hardy Heron (Ubuntu 8.04 LTS) successfully.
However, after installing a clean copy of Lucid Lynx (Ubuntu 10.04 LTS), the boot process halts almost immediately with a black screen. There is no blinking cursor and no hard-drive activity.
When I hold down the "Shift" key after the rebooting the computer, I'm able to edit the grub2 boot options.
When I remove the "quiet" boot option, I'm able to see about a page of text before the boot process halts and displays the black screen. Here is the last bit of text that appears just before the black screen:

At this point, the font style changes slightly. Then the text is replaced by the solid black screen. There is no blinking cursor, and the hard drive activity ceases.
I've tried booting in rescue mode: This also halts at a solid black screen.
This is an older laptop: I had to boot the installation disc with the boot option "noapic" in order for the installation disc to run.
However, the installation seemed to run normally. I was able to finish installing the system. But, after removing the installer disc and rebooting, we were met with that solid black screen almost immediately after booting.
I used the minimal install disc: [URL]
I've verified the MD5 checksum for the disc image. And I've successfully used this same disc to install Ubuntu for my mother.
But my little nephew is left without a usable system.
Could we be missing a boot option?
After an online upgrade from f11 to f13, on rebooting the setup attempts to configure the wireless connection and fails with a not very illuminating "error configuring your network interface" notice, offering no option but to go back and try again, which of course fails again with the same error.
Wireless card is a D-link that works fine with the ath5k driver in f11.
how I can get out of this vicious cycle and proceed with booting the upgrade?
I have a 1.0 ghz G4 eMac running Tiger. Using Ubuntu 10.04's Live-CD I installed 10.04 on a 8-gig USB flash drive and it worked very well despite spending nearly five hours to download its files via DSL and a pokey USB 1.1 port. The flash drive's 10.04 installation worked just fine on my eMac and 900mhz G3 iBook except for Airport wireless non-connecting issues.(I like Ubuntu 10.04 because unlike Mint for PPC, you're not hassled or barred from accessing your Mac HD and its files.) THEN, to resolve my wireless issues, I decided to upgrade to 10.10 which took nearly 12 hours, and it seemed to've installed well until I tried booting the flash drive and it doesn't work. I get the Ubuntu icon in the Startup Disk screen but it keeps returning to it even after I select Ubuntu. The error screen I get reads code...

I downloaded ubuntu and the software to make it possible to boot from usb. I started the laptop up selected the option to boot from the usb. But now it says "marking TSC unstable due to TSC halts in idle" and then on the next line it says "switching to clocksource hpet" and it has been like this for hours. The laptop specs are: Intel Core 2 CPU T5600 @ 1833MHz with 1GB of RAM.

I wanted a card that was supported with native drivers - no messing with ndiswrapper and such. The Trendnet TEW-423 is posted as working out of the box with the Realtek chip RTL8185. With the card inserted, Ubu 9.04 and 9.10 freeze at boot time. 9.10 freezes when the logo appears, 9.04 freezes at the arrow which comes after the logo. Remove the card and full boot is enabled. Obviously this card is not working out of the box.
I'm guessing that when one purchases music that the file first goes to 'cloud storage' and then to sync with Rhythmbox? I would like to see that as an option. I personally would rather the file(s) be downloaded straight to my laptop. B'cause once I get my server up and running I would have the local storage space of my own to grab the files from, and redundancy with backed up partitions if some files would get messed up. I enjoy using Ubuntu OS. I don't use Windows anymore, or OS-X, so using iTunes isn't an option for me.
I wait for the day that I can trade up from this iPhone to an Android. I like the way that a pc would see an Android phone as a removeable drive so instead of syncing. I just prefer to drag/drop or copy/paste music files, rather than syncing.

My desktop computer is stronger, but I can't give up on the portability of my laptop.I was thinking of installing a HD drawer for both my laptop and desktop. and when I come home just pull the HD from the laptop and plug it into the desktop.

I have 2 USB drives connected to an XP machine that I rotate twice a month for backups. On my CentOS box, I have that drive mounted at /home/backup using cifs.
Because the drive is mounted on the Linux box, Windows XP complains when I try to "Safely Remove Hardware". As a result, I have to "umount /home/backup", then "Safely Remove Hardware". After connecting the new drive, I then have to "mount /home/backup" in order to use it again on the Linux box.
Now, this question may be a Windows XP question, but I was wondering if there is anything I can do on the Linux box first. Is there anything that can be done on either end, so that I won't have to "umount /home/backup" first?

My server address is 172.16.6.1.
If the destination (which is my workstation desktop) 172.16.6.15 is offline when the server tries to boot, the entire boot procedure halts with the following message: Unable to find suitable address. mountall: mount <destination> terminated with status 2 The problem is that my server runs headlessly, and every time something silly like this happens where you'd normally expect the OS to continue regardless, I'm forced to plug a monitor in and diagnose on console
So my question: Is there any way to make it proceed with the boot normally despite the host being unreachable? I could probably chuck a mount command into crontab or /etc/rc.local or a /etc/network/if-up.d script, but isn't this the way it really should be done (/etc/fstab)? If so, then we shouldn't expect the entire boot to halt just because a network share can't be mounted, right? While on the topic of a headless ubuntu server 10.10 not booting without some kind of intervention, I have yet another issue: If the server goes down without proper shutdown (power failure, for example) the grub menu displays the kernel choices and there's no countdown timer. Instead, I have to manually press enter to continue the boot. Is there any way around this? Clearly this should not be the case for a server distribution
All of a sudden my laptop decided to not bootup. It stops while loading syslogd. I started up in single user mode and added a few echo statements in rc.syslog so it looks like:

This means that execution of the script doesn't seem to get past the "/usr/sbin/syslogd" line. Well at least thats the case in the first 2-3 minutes. Afterwards my screen gets flooded with the next echo I placed "caught in the loooooop!".
Again, stating the obvious, the script reads on and gets caught in the while loop. obviously there is no /dev/log and something must have messed up the execution of syslogd. what could that be it?
Recently I was fiddling around with jackd and trying to setup a jack-rack on my laptop. To do that I had to recompile alsa-driver from scratch in order to include the virtual soundcard driver. I also had to rebuild the mainline kernel to add low-latency (I did not switch to kernel-rt). Overall, I've been running with a custom kernel more than 2 months now and never had a problem with syslogd startup. The new low latency custom kernel is just like the previous one but with only difference the low latency setting. With the low latency kernel I've been using the pc for approx a week and have done 5+ reboots. So the problem appeared now out of nowhere...
If I disable rc.syslog and I start the pc, and then start it up, syslogd with execute nicely and quickly as if there was no problem, ever...
Recently set up root encryption with a couple of LVM volumes inside one LUKS volume, and I am just a little confused as to how I would go about getting it to automatically unlock using a keyfile stored on a USB flash drive, I presume I would have to put the drive in the fstab inside my initramfs (if there is one), and add a hook for USB device support.
But I digress, essentially, I want to know what I have to do to enable my LUKS volume (containing all of my partitions sans /boot) to unlock using a keyfile stored on a USB flash drive, rather than a manually entered passphrase.
I have a samsung removable hard drive, which have 3 fat32 partitions on it. When I plug into the usb. nothing happened and i just see a sdc was added in /dev/...so, there's nothing wrong with the drive, because i can use it on windows and ubuntu.

But halts with no rootfs defined and says i need to define one. However it wont continue to boot obviously so am unable to do so. My PC does have raid but its switched off in the bios. I know dual booting is one way to go but would prefer initially to have it in the file. I can boot into the demo version and there is an install option there but doesnt offer my boot disk.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'd like to upgrade my 9.10 desktop to 10.04 but I can't get past step 1.I've done alt-f2 and issued update-manager -d, but no "New distribution" option is presented.I've clicked the "check" button and updated all my repo information but that doesn't help.I've done a wireshark trace and observed that the update-manager's requests get through the corporate firewall, and responses come back.Somehow it determines that no new distro is available.I'll explore further if someone could help me out with getting hold of the relevant update-manager source code.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI would like to build up a multi boot system with 11.3 on ASUS M2N32 WS motherboard inclusive NVIDIA nForce 590 SLI RAID controller and Marwell 88SE614xSATA connectors.The problem is that if I built up the RAID-1 arrays (2x500, 2x1000) it cannot be seen from Suse install. As far as I investigated the nForce driver is in 11.3, but in this case why the installation hangs (no reset button, only power off). Sorry I cannot provide you a log, becuase the installation procedure goes to the restart, the system restarts, and Grube says error 15 or 21.

Back in Febuary, my wife bought a Toshiba Satilite from Wal-Mart and a few days ago the hard drive got toasted. So now I'm using an 8gig usb drive as the boot drive. I also have 2 other flash drives for downloads and such but overall I am very pleased.
I'm running 11.04 32 bit and was wandering if 64 bit made a difference. I've got 4 gigs of ddr3. It's slow to boot, but once it's running, it's faster then Windows 7. Very nice.
Is there anything I should chage, use, since I'm running it off a flash drive??

I decided to have my laptop with dual boot. Already having Win7, I tried installing Ubuntu on another partition. While installation was in progress, during the step where we manually choose partitions to install ubuntu on, I was asked to provide a swap area for ease of operation. I provided another active partition for this supposing that this "swap area" is needed only during the installation. Unfortunately, as I found out later that this makes that important active partition to be unavailable to work upon both in windows as well as Ubuntu. I need to use this partition again.
I tried the "disc utility" in System--->Administration section to change the partition type to "hpfs/ntfs". After a longtime it showed me error (Unable to perform the operation). What could have gone wrong? I absolutely need that drive back, as it contains valuable media files.
I downloaded the Fedora live dvd iso file, burned it to a dvd. I was wondering if I forgot to do something or did I do something wrong. When I try to install from the dvd I get this error message, isoLinux: Disk error 80 , AX = 42A7 , drive 9F Boot Failed: press key to retry When I press a key to retry I get the same error. I also tried to install virtual pc and get not boot disk found.
View 3 Replies View RelatedFedora 11 was being run on a Toshiba Satellite Intel Core2 Duo @ 2.1 with 180 gig hard drive and 3 gigs of RAM. The laptop is encrypted, using Fedora's encryption option when installing 11. Just finished upgrading using the upgrading DVD. Fedora boots and runs fine, when update manager is accessed it says 338 updates available. When updating is attempted there is one unavailable package after another. Have attempted to break the updates down into manageable sections to no avail. There is no repository manager (that can be located). Where to from here?
