Skype gives you the ability to call regular numbers anywhere in the world (for a price).Unfortunately it uses its own protocol which isn't compatible with the FOSS Linux soft phone clients like Ekiga. Can anyone recommend a service I can use to make long-distance calls using Ekiga or some other SIP client?

I am wondering if there is free VoIP software which will allow me to make and receive calls to regular phone numbers, such as landlines or cell phones, at no additional charge.

Is there a way to hook calls to new/malloc, delete/free in C++? I tried the following methods: LD_PRELOAD -> fails for malloc, because dlsym seems to depend on malloc -Wl,--wrap,malloc -> doesn't work for 'new' gcc hooks -> doesn't work always, e.g. for uclibc there are no hooks Are there any other methods I could try?

What is the real difference between system calls and normal function calls. Ultimately function calls too would be passed to kernel for some or the other work.

Am I asking too much for a FREE OS? Everybody spend their precious time to help others, that's very helpful. But it seems like there is no support from UBUNTU team, how could we even get through the barrier of not using Microsoft's OSes? No free lunch of course, but it seems to me some issues have never really been solved.I read lot's of people have problem with their WIFI, not just for my OLD USB wifi adapter. I don't have problem with WIFI in XP/Server.
I posted here and there, and seems like no answer, and I do not get any reply from UBUNTU support team, forgive me if I run out of google's keywords.I just need a simple answer, is my WIFI going to work in UBUNTU with a layman effort? I like linux and UBUNTU had put great effort in providing me such a great OS, but if a basic internet connection will need to spent sooo much time to setup, and it still doesn't work. IS IT WORTH to switch to UBUNTU at all

I need to write a script. In which, the 2nd part commands need to run under another bash shell environment. The enter_antoher_bash_env.sh will setup a new shell environment, call "bash". The rest commands need to run under the new env. (I cannot change this script too. )If I run these command one by one manually, it works of course. If I put them into a script, enter_another_bash_env.sh won't return because it calls "bash" command inside.

perhaps anyone can help me. Situation: A VPS Server, i installed a PPTP Server on it, is working. Client connecting to PPTP Server, working. Now i only wanna one port thru the PPTP Connection, all other NOT. In example Port 52000 on Client. Users connecting to Serverip:52000 and should land on Client:52000, BUT and that is what is important for me, with their Real IP. If i do a POSTROUTING ppp0 MASQUERADE it is working, but the Users in my Log have the IP from the Server and not their Realip. It makes sense because i do Masquerading.
Anyone can Help me? That would be great! VPN IPs are 192.168.0.1 on Server and 192.168.0.234 on Client. I can ping each other. Server Interfaces: eth0 and if i connected with PPTP Client ppp0 (192.168.0.1). I wanna not route all traffic through PPTP, only one or two Ports!

I have been experiencing a problem where the screen loads and after initial first few lines breaks up into multiple repetitions of lines. Reloading helps but has to be repeated when pageing down. Mail is no problem; it is supplied by my network provider. OS is openSUSE 11.2 which I update when advised. Below is a sample from the error console:

Two days ago I repartitioned my laptop HD and added the latest Ubuntu (2.6.35-25-generic) to the existing Vista and existing Ubuntu (2.6.32-28-generic via upgrades from 9.14(?)). Prior to this install it was using Grub with menu.lst from the old/upgrade Ubuntu. After the install the boot menu labels the partition with Vista as the Windows Recovery partition and the recovery partition item is no longer present.
At first I wondered how I could get Vista to boot. I found that SuperGrub cd would boot it OK. Then, it dawned on me that the boot menu item was not the recovery partition, but instead the Vista OS partition mislabelled . Vista loads just fine from it. The recovery partition is no longer listed as it was with Grub/menu.lst. SuperGrub will not boot the recovery partition, showing an error "missing BOOTMGR".
'os-prober' produces--
root@Toshiba:/home/deh# os-prober
/dev/sda2:Windows Recovery Environment (loader):Windows:chain
/dev/sda7:Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS (10.04):Ubuntu:linux
[code]...
I edited boot/grub/grub.cfg so the boot menu item is labelled correctly, but suspect that it will revert back when there is an upgrade.

i'm installing slack 13.1 on a friend's machine, and ran into what i would not call a bug, but more of an oversight. when selecting a desktop activity type, i must have definitely clicked the wrong item. i got a group of icons in the middle of the screen corresponding to the categories in the KDE menu. it worked ok, you could click on a category and get a group of icons for the apps, and click on the app to launch it. no problem there.... but you could not revert to a regular desktop.... at all.... no amount of right clicking would bring up the popup window i used to get there, and the plasma jellybean at the corner of the screen was gone. the plasma jellybean on the panel at the bottom brought up a panel menu, but never could get back to the desktop activity selection menu. the only way to get back to square one, was to delete the .kde subdirectory in the user's root directory.

I've got a question on free disk space. I'm currently running CentOS 5.5 on in Xenserver virtual environment. We've had an issue with disk space. My question is as follows: - from a ssh connection i run df -h this gives the value of 90% used leaving me with 9GB. If I use system monitor via a VNC connection the free disk space value is 20GB free on the same volume. Which one is correct? I do use SNMP to monitor the same volume and should alert me when < 10% is free I know this works as I set the alert threshold to < 90% I get an alert.

I've come across an unusual requirement for a service in my Ubuntu system.Simply put, I need to find a way to search for all instances of a term in a file, delete lines containing containing that term, and delete four lines below each instance of that term. ither that, or copy the entirety of a file to a new file and skip over all lines containing the term plus four below it.This sounds kinda weird, I know. Without going too far into detail, I either have to change the logfile format for a server I'm running which is a huge pain in the butt, or I can just run a script to edit an HTML report generated from said logs. (Said report is really just for managers to peruse, and I like my log format, so I'm pursuing option 2.)

I'm currently working for a company that requires me to have an IAX-compatible VoIP client. So far, the only one that works, and the one that was suggested to me, is Zoiper.
[URL]
I can download Zoiper classic (which runs literally as an executable) or Zoiper communicator which has a .deb, but both of them are unreliable for everyday use.
I can run Zoiper in Windows XP no problem, but I'm a programmer and I work much faster with my native workflow in Ubuntu.
I tried installing IAX libraries in Synaptic and tried to see if Empathy, Pidgin or Ekiga would pick it up, but no luck.

get cheap local and long distance phone service with a cordless handset around the house. I'm willing to invest some money into hardware. I have a small form factor Ubuntu computer with Atheros pci card that I use as my wireless access point. The only idea I have right now is buying a BELKIN F1PP000GN-SK Wi-Fi, which runs Skype with only needing a wifi connection. I to hear other ideas even if they are pretty technical

i've been using 10.04 on my laptop for a while now, and I am ready to make the jump on main machine (with 10.10 coming out soon, I don't want to be too behind the times)
however, my / partition is apparently too full, as I get the message: "not enough free disk space."
Since I'm not really sure what in the / partition is fair game and what needs to be left alone, I am sort of at a loss for how to free up space. i have plenty of free space in other partitions, but I don't know of a way to stretch them out, so to speak.
i've attached a screenshot of gparted showing how my disk is partitioned
how to go about making the necessary changes to get the upgrade?

right now I've been playing around with Ubuntu using Wubi and I would like to actually install Ubuntu onto its own partition. But I dont want to lose my Windows OS either (I need it for applications like MATLAB and LabVIEW).
My issue is, my laptop currently already has three primary partitions. One for windows, one for recovery and one "SYSTEM_DRV" (used to hold OEM windows license info apparently). I dont want to mess with any of those partitions. my question is, can I still install Ubuntu when I only have one primary partition?
I read about extended and logical partitions in the guide, but the wording was pretty confusing. All it said was Ubuntu needs two partitions, it didnt say if the partitions could be any type.
