Ubuntu Installation :: Create Exact HDD Backup For Upgrade To SSD?

I currently have been using 10.10 on my new netbook. I've been an Arch user for a while, but recently come back to ubuntu for my new netbook since it's a lot simpler to get working from installation, imo (oh and I'm quite impressed with how far Ubuntu's come in the last year since I used it ). Anyway, I want to upgrade to a 128GB SSD but I also want to keep the current setup I'm running on my current 320GB HDD. Is there any good HDD imaging tools for Ubuntu/Linux (that's relatively easy to use), as I've never done this before?
Also, bear in mind, my current HDD has a three partition setup. 4.1GB swap, 8.2GB ext3 (/ directory), 308GB ext3 (/home directory) respectively. And also an additional question: As the new SSD has only 128GB (compared to my current 320GB), is it possible to shrink my /home partition but keep the other partitions at their current sizes? (as my /home partition has probably over 128GB free space anyway) Oh and also, how big do Ubuntu root partitions have to be in general? I think my 8.2GB / is a bit of an overkill, is it not?

I want to backup my server that godaddy is hosting and install it on my linux system at home. In other words I want to have a clone of my server at home, like what timemachine does on mac (carries files and programs from one mac to another to make a clone).
How do I do that? I create an image file an iso file? or what? How?
I want to do this incase my server burns up over there. I don't want to reinstall all the programs and do the set ups manually again.

i have three partitions on my laptop. one contains ubuntu and other two my personal data.
i m using ubuntu since past three months. i installed many packages, softwares and libraries. i was wondering if something wrong happens and i have to format my whole drive containing ubuntu, is there a way that i can backup all my packages and softwares.
i tried to look at the /var/cache/apt/archives as it contains setup of all the packages that i installed using apt-get package manager. i tried to copy and save them, but now i was thinking that during a single package installation it installs many libraries used to support that applications. so i think this copying method will not work.

I'm about to install Ubuntu Netbook Remix and my Acer machine has a recovery partition at the beginning of the drive. I've created the eRecovery discs but those will only restore XP - not the actual recovery partition (which I'd like to have in case I sell the laptop later etc).
How can I backup the actual recovery partition, and keep its boot file intact. Then how can I restore this partition at a later time?

I did horrible mistake and installed upgrade for firefox 3.6.15 via KPackageKit. There would be normally no problem but this version does not work with Q3 live Is there a way to select older version of software in KPackageKit, Synaptic or via dpkg?P.S. I don't want to install it from tar.gz2 file - I want normal installation.

I cannot seem to get past the "creating File System.." window on a laptop upgrade
Setup: Thinkpad T23 (dual boot) upgrade from fc10 using DVD iso.checked with checksum and burnt by K3b.
History/actions taken:
Burnt iso to DVD and install/upgrade froze "creating File System " froze after approximately 10 minutes.
(completely froze and had to use the power button!)
Checked disk OK on laptop, tried again, same fault.
Bought another DVD.(different die) and tried again, same fault.
Tried another laptop HD, (full install not dual boot) , same fault.
Removed partitions with fdisk, but still no luck.
Tried disk on a spare HD on my PC and it works, I get into the window allowing software selection!
Tried a "Linux Format" fc 10 disk and that works, also tried a PCLinux LXF disk which also worked.
The laptop does not report any problems at bootup and I do not not what else to try

this is in the wrong section, but I wasn't sure where to put it. Since the background to my problem is kind of long winded I've split this post into two sections: Short version of problem
I have a PC that has two internal drives: one drive (drive A) is empty, and the other (drive B) has a copy of windows vista installed. At the moment the PC boots from drive A. I'd like to transfer everything from drive A to drive B, so that this new disk will boot and behave nicely and windows will still function.
Is there any easy way to do this in ubuntu? I'm guessing I can use something like dd, but will this copy the boot sector and will I have to mess around with the partition table? Long version of the problem
Today I built a new PC for my dad with two internal drives. He was previously using vista on a laptop which died a few days ago, and I'd like to install vista on one disk of the new PC, and ubuntu on the other disk.
He has a licensed copy of Vista for his laptop, but it came as a "system restore" disk, and so I can't install vista directly onto the new PC. I have an identical laptop to his, so I took out the drive from his laptop, put it in my laptop, and did a "system restore" from the disk that came with the laptop. I then took out the drive from my laptop, and put this inside the new PC. It boots up fine, and I installed all the necessary drivers and etc to make windows work.
Now instead of using a slow/small laptop drive inside the new PC, I'd like to be able to clone the data on laptop disk and this onto one of the bigger/faster internal drives of the new PC. How can I do this from ubuntu, so that the new drive will boot windows?
I'm fairly certain it can be done using dd, but how do I make sure the information in the boot sector (or partition table) is correct for the new drive? I'm asking this because when I put my laptop drive into the new PC initially, I had connected it as an external drive, and when I tried booting from this there was an error, something like "Invalid partition table" (I think). I figured that when I did a "system restore" on my laptop, the drive was the only drive available, so this would be HDA, or SDA in the boot record of that disk. But when I added it to a system where other drives were available, it was no longer at that same location, so the boot loader couldn't find the data it was looking for to load the system.

I've been out of the Linux loop for a little while, but a customer of mine wants a "No Virus) desktop environment, I have gone through the process of installing and configuring Ubuntu 10.10 to work with their client side software, but for the life of me, I can't remember if or how I can create an exact image of this file-system to install on all of the desktops.I would need to have all of the installed programs, Security Certificates, Display settings... basically, I need exactly what I have right now installed from the disc so that "IF" the customer needs to install the environment on new systems, I can just pop the disc in and run.

I have installed Ubuntu and I make all the configurations in order to have it like I want it....My question..... Can I make an iso file somehow (cd/Dvd) of my system with all the configurations, all theservers, all the custom thinks and the home folder's content in order to have it as backup (quick installable backup) and in case of a damage to install from cd/dvd again and everything is in place?

I've been trying to make a live CD off an installation with minimalist deviation possible. Purpose is to check the hardware compatibility using the live CD, after which I'll copy the installation to the hard drive (which will probably be a squashed image) and do the necessary edits to make the system bootable. Since the rootfs will be copied over (not dd, but direct cp --preserve=all), the difference from the actual install should be minimal.
If there are any caveats using this procedure, do notify.
I've been succeeded in doing this using Gentoo but it appears the Gentoo kernel uses Gentoo specific kernel parameters which makes things very simple, but I gotta do this with the generic Debian kernel.
If it can be done easily using a script I would also like to know exactly how it's done so I can reproduce it by hand even to make an ro rootfs and possibly reproducing the same with other distros.

Is there a way to create aptoncd back up on a pen drive? Meaning when I insert a cd created with aptoncd an autorun dialog box appears asking if I want to start the package manager. But when I copy those files to a pen drive the above mentioned autorun feature doesn't work. In short I want my apt cache backup on a pen drive with the autorun feature.

Well I've decided to move all my data from one VPS to another, and Iwanted to know if there was a way from within Ubuntu to make a full system image backup,ch I can then just transfer to the new Ubuntu VPS, and restore it there ..Unfortunately my VPS control does not have any working backup option right now, so I can only make the backup manually from within Ubuntu, if there is a way to do it

I have installed Fedora 12 and am running it successfully. I have made a few stupid mistakes a couple of times and have had to start from scratch with a complete OS reinstall on a few occassions. I am happy with my current setup and am wondering is it possible for me to create a Live CD that has my exact configuration so that If I make a mess again, I can just stick in my backup DVD/CD's and roll back to my happy (Known to ne Working) sate. Something like System restore on Windows...... Is this possible?

I'm trying to create backup/archive my Ubuntu 10.04 system files (so I can restore it in case my system get corrupted). More specifically, I'm trying to zip the important files in my root directory not including my home directory (which includes my documents which I backup separately/more frequently) to an external hard drive attached via USB (called 'My Book').
Since File Roller didn't give me quite the level of control I was looking for, I created a script that I could execute to backup and archive regularly. Here's a snippet:

This is Kishore and i am new to Ubuntu and SVN and please some one help me in creating a cron job for my svn backup every day at 10:30 pm I already created a cron job which looks like 30 10 * * * svnadmin dump /home/administrator/svnrepository >svn1 when i run command directly i am getting whole backup and it's size is 3.6 gb but when i run through cron job the backup size is only 9 mb. So finally my requests are 1. cron job for taking complete svn backup at 10:30 pm daily and 2. cron job to copy the SVN backup in to my windows system in d drive and this must be run every day at 11:30 pm.

Have been playing with Centos 5 and finally got it installed and have done most of the updates. Before I proceed much further it would be nice if I could create a backup/install disc of how it is now. No Data,just the setup and software used etc.Have a dvd rw on the server.I recall mondo rescue installed years ago on a linux server we used.

I have a CentOS 5.5 server that has just recently been updated to 5.6 running PostgreSQL 8.4 and Drupal for an internal website. The server is also acting as a shared network storage between the Linux server and Windows desktops with Samba.
I just recently purchased a license to run Symantec Backup Exec System Restore 2010 for Linux and the only operating systems that are supported are RedHat and Suse Linux.
Does anyone know of a nice open source solution that we can use to create backup images of the server?
In the event of a server crash, we want to be able to rebuild the server via a bit-by-bit backup image.
The CentOS 5.6 is 32bit

In doing my kernel-kits that allow you to create a livecd backup of your installed slackware or arch install, I came across stuff about how many x86 or x86_64 systems use a PAE kernel?
if thats so; should I release a PAE kernel kit also besides the x86 and x86_64 kernel kits for slackware/arch??
or is it not a big thing?
Can anyone run a PAE kernel or it should be a seperate build? the x86/x86_64 kits are not PAE...let me check...

I Acer aspire 3620 and would like to backup whole system. My laptop has a 40Gig hdd. Is there a way I can either create an image or copy(clone) to another computer just in case I need it. If it matters I have a spare 40 gig drive on the other computer. The reason for doing this is so that I can try a system restore and if anything goes wrong I want to be able to transfer back. Also if it is posible how could I put it back and be bootable.

This i want is to encrypt these .tar.gz files and when i need them to decrypt them. Does anyone have an idea on how to encrypt these files ?
