I've 2 servers (xen1 and xen2 - their hostnames) with perversion configuration below: Each server have 4 SATA disks, 1 Tb each.
16 Gb ddr3 debian squeeze x64 installed: root@xen2:~# uname -a Linux xen2 2.6.32-5-xen-amd64 #1 SMP Wed Jan 12 05:46:49 UTC 2011 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Storage configuration: Former 256 Mb + 32 Gb of 2 of 4 disks are used as raid1 devices for /boot and swap respectively. The rest of space, 970 Gb on all 4 sata disks are used as raid10. There is LVM2 installed over that raid10. Volume group is named xenlvm (that servers are expected to use as xen 4.0.1 hosts, but the story is not about Xen troubles). / , /var, /home are located on logical volumes of small size (just found out I got mixed up with lv names and partitions, but that's not the problem, I think):
Is growing raid 6 in 5.3 centos possible? I'm getting errors when i run mdadm in --grow mode failed : 'mdadm --grow /dev/md0 -n 5 2>&1' -> mdadm: Cannot set device size/shape for /dev/md0: Invalid argument Do i have to create a custom kernel for centos?
I want to back up an entire Linux system on a 3Tb external Western DIgital USB3 drive.
I do not want to reformat it from what it is, apparemtly NTFS.
Is there a utility that can act like a file manager like mc, that will permit me to create an ever expanding (to 320Gb) TAR file that will retain all the original file permissions. I have had nothing but disappointment with Linux backup utils with a FAT32 external drive, and I am concerned if I just try an tar the entire drive at once, with around 3 million files, I might run out of memory.
I would like to create a full systembackup to a ISO/IMG-file. I've been searching and found mondorescue.org, but something is wrong with package for debian 6.
This script simply deletes files older than a certain age (in this case 7 days) from a certain location; I use it to purge old backups nightly, and it works as expected:
# delete backups older than 7 days find /mnt/backup/* -mtime +7 -exec rm -Rf {} ;
The problem is, every morning I get an email with an error message something like this:
find: `/mnt/backup/subfolder': No such file or directory
i ma trying to learn how to configure lot of server's in Debian Distro what i want to to create backup from the original files easy to restore cos if i miss any configuration it will easy to restore omething like restore point in windows
Like topic, I want to create a weekly backup of some folder to anoter partition (or external usb), compressed or not (folder also of 20/30 gb), with only root permission on file (or folder) created..This system, where I have installed debian jessie, is always on being used like a NAS..
Attempting to create a backup script to copy files from one file system to a remote file system.
When I try this I get:
Quote:
# tar -cf - /mnt/raid_md1 | gzip -c | ssh -i ~/.ssh/key -l user@192.168.1.1 "cat > /mnt/backup/fileserver.md1.tar.gz" tar: Removing leading `/' from member names Pseudo-terminal will not be allocated because stdin is not a terminal. ssh: Could not resolve hostname cat > /mnt/backup/fileserver.md1.tar.gz: Name or service not known
[Code].....
I know that the remote file system dir is RW and the access is working fine. I am stumped...
I'm looking for a way to do a bare metal backup of our server using a tool such as ghost or clonezilla. The limitation is that / is on an mdadm raid 5. The only relevant info I could find on clonezilla's site was:
# Software RAID/fake RAID is not supported by default. It's can be done manually only.
Is there a way/command to back up all data from a Red hat Linux 4 serve[Including user rpofiles, data, group info, encrypts] either to a Red hat Linux 5.4 machine or as an Image file or manageable resource?
I have configured a "Syslog" server on /var directory as a separate ext3 partition - to receive the logs and events from the clients & the firewall as well. The directory needs to grow dynamically as the logs are populated. Is there a way i can make the filesystem grow dynamically as and when the directory is full.
My church is planning to purchase a NAS serving 9 PCs running Windows and Linux respectively. The new device apart from storing data, mainly photo, is expected to be used for backup keeping all PCs images.
I have been googling a while unable to find a solution running dd command over LAN.
i want to ask is it safe to ad more space to my root partition with gparted ?I ask friends and they all told me if i change the root partition is possible to have problems to start my Debian.
I'm building a new desktop computer, on which I plan to install Debian Squeeze. I'll have a 1 TB SATA hard drive in the system. I'm also considering using two 500 GB external USB drives, but I'm debating about how I want to use them. Running them all separately for 2 TB of space could be a nightmare, with three potential points of failure, so I was thinking of using the two external drives as a backup system instead.
I'm considering linking the two external drives in a RAID 0 array, then linking that array and the internal drive in a RAID 1 array. I would use mdadm software RAID for all of this so I could use individual partitions in the arrays, avoid hardware dependency, and have greater software control. So now is this feasible to do (having a partial RAID 0+1 setup)? Moreover, what kind of performance could I expect from using potentially slow external drives (one of which I know has a very long spin-up time after idle periods) in a mirroring setup with the internal drive?Would I be far better off using a filesystem backup daemon instead?
EDIT:After some more research and brainstorming, I've decided I might just end up using rsync+cron, lsyncd, or DRBD (assuming it can easily make backups locally). I'd probably have to link up the external drives in RAID 0 (or use some filesystem link trickery). But I suppose such a setup would offer greater control, flexibility in disk capacities (the full system isn't so strictly limited to the capacity of the smallest member of the array), and granularity than RAID 0+1 would.I'm still open to thoughts on the mdadm RAID 0+1 solution, but does anyone have any advice on choosing backup software? For some background on my needs, I'll be using this computer as both an everyday desktop and a personal LAMP server (MySQL database files would be included in the backups).
We have some servers that run in very harsh environments (research vessel) that need to have high-availability.We have software RAID 1 for some measure of resiliency, along with proper data backups (tapes etc), however we would like to be able to break out a new server and re-image it (including RAID setup) from a known good copy if the hardware completely fails on the production box. Simplicity of the process is a big plus.I am interested in any advice on the best way to approach this. My current approach (relatively new to Linux administration, totally new to MDADM) is to use DD to take a complete gzipped copy of one of the RAID'ed devices (from a live CD): ode: dd if=/dev/sda bs=4096 | gzip -c > /mnt/external/image/test.img then reverse the process on the new PC, finally using Code:mdadm --assemble to re-create and re-build the array.
Does the dump command back up entire file-systems or is it capable of backing up subsets of a file-system? And is tar capable of taking device names (for file systems) as input to be archived?
when i use rsync command to backup my image file , it shows the following error message.
bash: line 1: /usr/bin/rsync: Argument list too long rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (0 bytes received so far) [receiver] rsync error: remote command could not be run (code 126) at io.c(463) [receiver=2.6.8]
The command which i used is rsync -avrl -e ssh cms@server:/data/cms/data/images/* /mnt/Backup/Intranet_cms_backup/images
mdadm --create /dev/md1 --level=1 --raid-disks=2 missing /dev/sdb1and I getmd1: raid array is not clean -- starting background reconstructionWhy is it not clean?Should I be worried? The HD is not new it has been used in before in a raid array but has beenrepartitionated.
I am trying to create a new mdadm RAID 5 device /dev/md0 across three disks where such an array previously existed, but whenever I do it never recovers properly and tells me that I have a faulty spare in my array. More-specific details below. I recently installed Ubuntu Server 10.10 on a new box with the intent of using it as a NAS sorta-thing. I have 3 HDDs (2 TB each) and was hoping to use most of the available disk space as a RAID5 mdadm device (which gives me a bit less than 4TB.)
I configured /dev/md0 during OS installation across three partitions on the three disks - /dev/sda5, /dev/sdb5 and /dev/sdc5, which are all identical sizes. The OS, swap partition etc. are all on /dev/sda. Everything worked fine, and I was able to format the device as ext4 and mount it. Good so far.
Then I thought I should simulate a failure before I started keeping important stuff on the RAID array - no point having RAID 5 if it doesn't provide some redundancy that I actually know how to use, right? So I unplugged one of my drives, booted up, and was able to mount the device in a degraded state; test data I had put on there was still fine. Great. My trouble began when I plugged the third drive back in and re-booted. I re-added the removed drive to /dev/md0 and recovery began; things would look something like this:
How can I create multipart rar file in Linux using the official console rar client?RAR 3.90 Copyright (c) 1993-2009 Alexander Roshal 16 Aug 2009Shareware version Type RAR -? for helpI want a multipart rar with each part size being 150 MB.
I'm looking to shrink my windows partition on a raid0 array and create a mdadm ubuntu partition using raid0. Is this possible? can I just ignore the /dev/mapper device and use the standard /dev/sdx devices?
My question deals with me creating a name pipe (file) in the my /group directory called chat.I then have to write a script to read from the named pipe and save data into a file called chat.log until the words End of File are passed to the program.
-When I created the named pipe file (chat) I used the mknod chat p command..Is this the correct command to create a named pipe file? -Then I'm having trouble with my script and how to make it run until the words End of File are entered in. This is what I have so far.
