my update manager has run today and returned updates for firefox. Which would be a superb, immensely handy thing - if firefox happened to be installed on my box. It isn't.Why does the update manager return updates for software that isn't installed?

I recently installed Ubuntu 9.04 off of a disc and it worked perfectly, however after I downloaded and installed the system updates from the update manager, it stopped working and it won't even see my device. I have a Zonenet ZEW2500 USB wireless adapter.

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04, and I had some trouble with an old Drupal installation, so I ran the script below in an effort to revert PHP back to version 5.2. The script below didn't work for me, and now Update Manager gives me the message "Not all updates can be installed", presumably because the script changed the repository for some of the software from lucid to karmic.Script which "broke" Update Manager:Quote:

I am a recent convert to Ubuntu and have the Ubuntu 10.10 version installed on my computer. All has been going on well until I installed FreePops. Since then, when I check for updates through the Update Manager, it shows that it's searching for updates but then it brings up a pop up stating the following "Failed to download repository information" and under this the following is mentioned "W:Failed to fetch [URL], E:Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead."I have removed FreePops from Synaptic Package Manager but the above mentioned error still appears and updates cannot be installed. I have rebooted my computer also and performed the updates but the error still appears.

Today when I started my computer I got an error from the updater saying the Following
Ubuntu 10.10
Not all updates can be installed
Run a part upgrade to install as many as possible.
This can be caused by:
*A earlier update that hasn't been complete
*Problem with parts of the installed software
*In offical program packages that havent been "?Something?" By ubuntu
*Common changes in a early version of ubuntu
So what should I do? Just take Part update? And do you know what may be the cause of this. Only thing I installed lately was a "game" from the ubuntu Program central and I haven't run it and I restarted my computer 1 time before this when having it installed.

I am using the latest Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid lynx. Sometimes ago while I am updating my operating system to linux-image-2.6.32-25-generic (2.6.32-25.44) with update manager, after downloading all the files it was running the installation. During installation suddenly my pc turned off, may be for some power issue. Then while I again start my pc and tried to restart the update process the update manager show me a message. "Not all updates can be install. Run a partial upgrade, to install as many as updates as possible."
This can be caused by:
* A previous upgrade which didn't complete.
* Problem with some of the installed software.
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu.
* Normal changes of a pre-release version of Ubuntu.
Then I tried to open the synaptic package manager. But it didn't open either and show another message which suggest to run the command in the terminal: "sudo dpkg --configure -a". And unluckily it wasn't work. and show the messgae:
"dpkg: parse error, in file '/var/lib/dpkg/updates/0103' near line 0: newline in field name `#padding'".

I currently have Windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.04 (The beta) running on my Laptop. I want to know if it's possible to get 11.04 (Full) through the update manager? If so, how? Secondly, if I wanted to just go back to 10.10, could i install it over the current 11.04? I don't want to copy files over or anything like that, just a fresh start.

I have the package "xvidcap" (Screen recorder) installed in Ubuntu, the problem I have is the version I have installed is an older version and there is a newer version avaliable, but I don't want to install the newer version as this breaks some functionality regarding screen capturing e.g. audio capturing. But each time I run Update Manager the package appears in the list to be upgraded.
Is there anyway to flag the package as do not upgrade or something to make it not appear in Update Manager or at least have it greyed out so the checkbox isn't automatically checked each time update manager is ran?

I started using ubuntu 10.04 LTS on my Dell Studio 15 laptop. Installing ubuntu has never been this easy! I used CD which used WUBIInstaller to install Ubuntu. Then I restarted my machine and selected Ubuntu from 'OS selection screen'.
I connected to my wireless broadband in few minutes and found a pop-up of 'update manager' showing 305 new updates to be download and to be installed. I installed all updates worth 370 MB and in middle got an pop-up of GRUB telling me to configure GRUB on some path. I just selected that path and clicked on FORWARD button. Then installation of updates got over and it asked me to restart machine. I restarted machine but on OS selection screen, when i selected Ubuntu it didn't boot Ubuntu but instead machine restarted again. I'm not able to boot into Ubuntu.

I already checked the preferences of UM but the filtering is somewhat awkward -- i.e. you have choice to EITHER install silently security updates OR be notified about all updates. One does not exclude the other, but for UM apparently it does.
But I have similar yet different need -- be notified about ONLY security updates (so when I click to show the updates, I will see only them). The rest of the updates should be ignored -- unless the update is required by the other, security update package.

After click on install updates and entering password, a message says "Some of the packages could not be retrieved from the server(s). Do you want to continue, ignoring these packages? Yes/No.
If I answer No, this message appears:

If Yes, it tries to download but immediately:

It has always installed the updates with no problems, until these 3 updates remain in pending installation status.

start ubuntu, the update manager will automaticly start and tells me that "Not all updates can be installed". I know this is a common issue people ask questions about, because I've seen a number of threads.Still, after reading about this issue, I'm unsure how to fix it. I'll describe my situation:When I close the messagebox, I'm left with an update manager that presents me with 851 updates. Some checkboxes are unchecked and cannot be checked. It also shows me that I can upgrade to 10.4. I don't want to do that yet. I just want to recieve my updates to keep my system safe and up-to-date.I've taken a look at the situation in synaptic. I clicked "Mark all upgrades". It marked a whole lot of them. I noticed that "gdm" and maybe 20 other packages were about to be removed. I became supsicious. Is this a good thing? I've also added two third party repositories, as you can see in my sources.list:
Code:
deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu karmic-security main restricted
deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu karmic-security main restricted

I just got an update that installed, and after a reboot I've got one core at 100%. The "you need to restart" icon in the notification tray said "glibc glibc glibc glibc nscd". Now that I look at it, It's switching between both cored. This behavior is consistent over multiple full reboots as well as kexec reboots.
Edit: Strange, just when I finished, the CPU load settled out and now everything is fine. I wonder what was going on. I'm rebooting right now to double check. Edit2: Yep, same issue 100% usage on one core. And it probably will level out soon. I'm not sure what could be causing this. I assume that glibc could be the issue.

Update Manager popped up today and has a few Recommended updates for my machine. Included in the Recommended updates is a new kernel (2.6.32-25). Next to several of the kernel/header updates is the text "(New install)". What does the "New install" text mean here? Will installing the kernel/header updates do anything destructive to the system?

For some reason Update Manager is not installing updates as of yesterday.I have it set to check daily and notify if updates are available. It has been working without issues for well over a year now.
Update Manager tells me updates are available and presents the list of security, recommended, and other updates. All are selected to update, but when I select Install Updates in Update Manager it returns with a Reading Package Information window overlaid on the main Update Manager window - building dependency tree then reading state information and dumps me back to the main Update Manager window without performing any update actions.

I noticed this today for the second or third time since getting 10.04: all my machines are installing security updates automatically, despite the fact that KPackageKit is set to 'only notify about available updates.'
Am I just being stupid, missing a setting somewhere, or is this a bug? Aside from the fact that I like to know what's being installed, I often use my laptop on satellite or other bandwidth-metered connections (as was the case when it happened today), and I don't want the OS to start dictating how much I owe my ISP at the end of the month!

Running fine for a couple of weeks now, my Ubuntu Lucid install on a Sony laptop Vaio VGN-N21E went through some updates an hour ago. After the updates were installed, I shut the laptop down. The shutdown was slow but graceful with no errors. Now, when I try and power back on, I get errors about CIFS stating that the network share I map to could not connect. Also, that the network could not connect. I usually connect wirelessly and had no problems until now. It lets me log in but freezes after I see my desktop. No cursor or keyboard response...no response to CTRL+ALT+DEL...I can only manually force shutdown....

My laptop is sadly rather elderly and the battery is broken, so if it is unplugged it loses power and immediately turns off. Unfortunately I managed to accidentally do exactly this in the middle of upgrading from Lucid to Natty. I turned the computer back on, some automated disk checks were run, and I'm now apparently using Maverick.
Launching Update Manager, I get the following message:
"Not all updates can be installed
Run a partial upgrade, to install as many updates as possible.
This can be caused by:
*A previous upgrade which didn't complete
*Problems with some of the installed software
*Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
*Normal changes of a pre-release version of Ubuntu"
Clicking the "Partial Upgrade" option, the system starts to upgrade but exits with the following in the Terminal:
"dpkg: parse error, in file '/var/lib/dpkg/updates/0121' near line 42 package 'texlive-xetex':
duplicate value for 'Status' field"
Basically I have no idea what to do from here. The functions that I need from my computer are working (internet, music player) and I don't really need much more than that but I'd rather it was working. Also I can't install any updates or upgrade to Natty until this is solved.
