Ubuntu Installation :: Add Extended Partition In GUID Partition Scheme?
May 12, 2011I am not really sure if the title makes any sense or if it even possible. Basically I am currently triple booting with Mac osx on the first partition windows 7 on the second and ubuntu linux on the 3rd with a swap partition. So basically on my 2TB harddrive
Mac (200gb)
Windows (200gb)
Linux (200gb)
Swap (8gb)
NTFS(1592gb)
The last partition is formatted as ntfs using Gparted, windows cannot detect it. The windows disk partitioner shows the swap and ntfs partitions as unformatted. I can unformat the space and use the windows partition to add format it as ntfs but it would format the linux swap partition as well. I am worried that it could potentially screw up everything on my harddrive. My question is. What do I need to do to get the ntfs parition recognized by windows (should I use the windows partitioner)?

Apr 9, 2010I am a total noob for Linux / Ubuntu. I have been using windows all my life and I decided to get rid of Bill finally. I want to install Ubuntu by Manually partitioning my HD. I have a 500GB HDD. optimal partition scheme. I repeat i am a total Noob. please let me know details for each partition like
1. Primary or Logical
2. type
3. mount point
4. size
I am having no other OS in the pc. just planning to have ubuntu. no dual boot needed.
Slackware :: Preformatting With Gparted Prior To Installation - Partition Scheme
Jan 13, 2010A snapshot of my existing partion configuration can be viewed at: [URL] I intend for the space including /dev/sda1,dev/sda2 and /dev/sda3 to be used by slack 13.0. The OS at /dev/sda6 and /dev/sda7 will be "retired" once I get slack up, running and configuration for my work. In the past I have preformatted partitions, that is, from the existing OS, I have formatted partitions for use by the next OS, using gparted. In the case of ubuntu, that has worked well. And frankly, I'm pretty rusty with fdisk....
1)Is there any advantage - or disadvantage - in my doing this for my pending slackware installation? Will slack recognize the "clean" partition and opt to skip formatting?
2)I presume that slack will recognize the existing swap partition. Am I correct?
3)My scheme would be to provide separate partions for /, /home/ and /usr or /usr/local.
4)Any recommendations on filesystems?

When I go to install Ubuntu, I am only given one drive: /dev/sda. What partition is this. I want to install this on the free space area that was originally the second partition. I originally tried to do this, before I deleted the partiton, however, I still had the same issue.

I assumed at that point that the "sda3" "/" would be for booting purposes. I would have to guess that I was wrong, because it is filling up very quickly. As you may be able to tell by the screen shot, "sda5", "/home" was what was assumed to be the file structure to store all of the programs and such.
I have only been running this setup for a week, and would expect to not be seeing my "boot" partition growing so quickly. Do I need to resize it? here do the standard programs that I get from the ubuntu software center install at (partition wise)? I suppose I dont mind wiping that section dry and starting over, but I would give a resize a try if possible.
CentOS 5 :: GPT Partition Scheme On HP ProLiant DL180 Server
May 12, 2011I'm installing Centos 5.5 on a HP ProLiant DL180 Server with ~8 TB of hard disk (4 disks that have been pre-RAIDED), from an installation DVD.
Normally when I get to the partitions screen, I would select "remove all partitions etc".
But this gives me an error message "Your boot partition is on a disk using the GPT partition scheme but this machine cannot boot using GPT. This can happen if there is not enough space on your drives for the installation."
Pressed OK, tried the other three partition options but they led to the same outcome.
Tried Advanced storage configuration: Showed that there was one hard drive (c0d0) with ~ 8 TB of space.
I figured I should create a root sector, set one up with 100 MB of space, ext3, set the mount point as /.
Created a software raid of the remaining space.
Trying to go "next" gave me a similar error about GPT partition scheme. Trying various other configurations all gave similar errors about the GPT scheme.
What do I need to do? Some earlier hard format of the disk or something?
Ubuntu / Apple :: Natty Install Changed Partition Scheme (MacbookPro 8,1)?
May 5, 2011i was experiencing slow start ups since i installed ubuntu 11.04. it took about 20-30sec for the apple logo to come up (or rEFIt). today apple released EFI firmware updates which doesn't seem to install. reason is that the partition scheme is not compatible. EFI Firmware updates only install from GUID partition schemes.
DiskUtility tells me i have MBR. So it seems like Ubuntu changed the Partition Scheme.
Can any body confirm that? how can i make sure ubuntu installs into existing GUID? i will re-partition later today and give you an update if the EFI firmware update installs and boot time is faster.

Apr 29, 2011I have already done the installation process following the guide on Ubuntu's site, got everything up and running but the partition that I made in the installer was too small. I was then directed by a friend (a slightly less inexperienced newbie) to modify this through Easeus Partition Manager. I shrunk the Windows 7 partition to only the space that was in use, giving the newly unallocated space to the Ubuntu partition. Set the changes and rebooted the computer, then got the message "unknown filesystem, grub rescue". Now have no idea what to do with this. What happened??
I've been scouring the forums for something helpful but I can't find anything that is a comparable circumstance.I can still access Ubuntu through my flashdrive.

Sep 23, 2014I have a Intel DH67CL motherboard with UEFI support(and updated to latest BIOS). I have connected a 180GB Intel 330 SSD into my system so as to install Debian testing.
Presently, a 160GB sata hard drive is connected along with SSD and is used to boot default OS.
1. I am planning to do GPT partitioning. I am totally new to GPT partitioning. from what I understands, It needs some mandatory partitions like ESP. My doubt is, in a SSD solely booting Linux, will I need to create separate /(root) and /home and /data partitions? Also, I plan to use /var/log and some other frequently updated directories moved into existing harddrive.
So, what is the partitioning order - is this fine - ESP(512MB), /boot(100MB), /(30GB), /home(50GB) and /DATA(50GB) and remaining 16-17GB for over provisioning for the SSD?
2. is there a need to have 128MB MSR(microsoft reserved) in the case of Linux
3. With gdisk or parted for creating partitions? how to verify if partitions are aligned. In GPT, only primary partitions are supported?
4. Some answers in askubuntu/superuser says ext4 is not really good for SSD, instead take JFS? is this true? Is Btrfs mature enough to use with Desktop system
5. Which bootloader? gdisk creator Roderick is pushing for rEFInd or gummyboot instead of GRUB2.
6. In my PC, 4GB RAM is available with a core i3 processor. Shall I mount /tmp in RAM? Will I need to specify the size of RAM when mounting using /etc/fstab? A size of 1GB is fine?
7. using deadline I/O Scheduler instead of CFQ?

Mar 12, 2010I have been using ubuntu for about a year while still allowing mself to boot into Windows if I wanted to. Now I just want to switch over to Ubuntu completely. If I do the normal isntallation process, will that wipe off all my current ubuntu and windows stuff? I just want to clean up my computer and don't mind about losing all the files, because I have them backed up. I just wanted Vista off my computer!

Jul 29, 2010first of all I am a casual PC user so I apologise if this is a stupid question. I was using Ubuntu 10.04 32-bit alongside Windows, choosing between them each startup. It was easy to install and all, but Ive recently found out I was using 32bit version, unlike my 64-bit Windows. Therefore, I guess I didnt get all the performance I could. So I downloaded the 64bit one, butned it to a CD and rebooted PC (I formatted all before so now I have only Win). However, when trying to install Ubuntu64 there was no option to install it side by side and choose on startup. So I went to advanced and there was the partitioning thing. Now I have C and D, each by 120GB for windows and I had left 240GB for Ubuntu. It is disk E, however when I chose to install it there it says there is no root file. I want the whole E disc to be used for Ubuntu and I dont know what mount point and the root thing to choose.

The installer does NOT offer the "alongside" installation option. I also tried a 10.04 live CD installer, and it also did not offer the side-by-side option. So neither installer can see Win7 on the disk. Now how do I do the installation? I'd like to dual-boot rather than devote the laptop to UBUNTU-only.

May 3, 2011I burned the .iso to DVD and 11.04 seems to work fine on my Vostro 200 which is currently running 10.10. After hearing all of other peoples problems installing, I thought I might install 11.04 alongside of 10.10 which I noticed was an option. What are, if any, the hangups in doing this? Sounds great if I can play with 11.04 and its settings while keeping my 10.10 going strong.

Oct 22, 2010I installed ubuntu 10.10 on my lenovo laptop but couldnt get into it. I was having ubuntu 9.10 and installed 10.10 alongside. had Grub loader and all its entries still boot to my 9.10 installation. I could still see my 10.10 partition but dont know how to get 10.10 working. Any ideas?

Jan 10, 2011When I get to the "Allocate Drive Space" section, I have only 2 options, namely "Erase and use the entire disk", which alarms me because I want to install UNR alongside Windows XP on my ASUS Eee PC 1005HA. The other option is "Specify partitions manually (advanced)". For obvious reasons, I am reluctant to try this. I have a C Drive (Windows) and a D Drive (mainly for Backup of Windows). Each drive is about 72GB with about 60GB free on my D Drive. Obviously, this is where I would like to install UNR, but will I have to clear my D Drive completely? I still have about 27GB free on my C Drive.

Jun 29, 2011I've been dual booting Ubuntu and winxp for a few years and the Ubuntu installation in my machines has always been a matter of a few clicks, with Ubuntu recognizing my current xp installation and offering to repartition my disk to have both OSs coexist.I recently bought a new laptop (HP dv6t, win7 x64) and while trying to install Ubuntu 11.04, the installer informed me that I would have to get rid of win7 to install the new OS.
What happened to the friendly installer? Is there still an easy way to set up a dual boot in a system in which win7 is already present and an installation cd for it is not available?

Apr 23, 2015I have a laptop primarily used for a client work. It is running Debian Wheezy, and wish to keep it intact in case I need to do more work for client.
I would like to install Ubuntu 14.04 alongside Debian, and use Ubuntu as a bit of a play/experiment area, etc... HD has lots of space (600GB free), and as far as I can tell Grub is installed in MBR.
I did some searches, and from what I can tell, it sounds like I can just install Ubuntu from ISO file, specify how much space to use (say 400GB), and that's it. This sounds almost too easy. Once I install and restart machine, will there be selection for what Distro to boot.

But now with the latest version (10.10) the wubi installer isn't showing every option. How do I get the old interface where you can install it alongside Windows? The first attachment is what I get when opening wubi.exe and the second one is what I would like. That is a 10.04 version.

However, I have a wubi partition and some other ones I'd like to be rid of. When i boot i get four different ubuntu options, a window loader, the grub again. How do I clean this up?

When I load into ubuntu I can only see winXP. i did a sudo update-grub and got the windows loader, which then shows me winXP and ubuntu. what i would love is one boot page that has listed winXP, win7, and ubuntu. FWIW this is an acer netbook, winXP is on D:/ and win7 is on F:/, i used the windows installer wubi for ubuntu 10.10.

I asked my friend who is a contributor to ubuntu, and runs a cyber security company to install it on my computer and he said that he will charge me $375 to do this. And then he said that it is not such a difficult thing, however, it will need a lot of tinkering with ubuntu before it works flawlessly. I didn't know what he meant and didn't want to get into it with him. I was wondering if you could direct me to the threads that discuss installation of Ubuntu alongside Windows 7 already installed and on a separate hardware. I don't wanna pay him that money and I'm very new to this. Also, I hope someone could explain what kind of tinkering is done before it works flawlessly.
