I am dual booting Ubuntu and Windows 7, I have just shrunk my windows partition and would like to add that extra space to the file system partition. I installed Gparted but it told me I need to unmount the file system partition manually. I would like specific instructions on how to do this,
View 9 RepliesI recently installed Bio-Linux 5.0 as a dual boot system with XP for some bioinformatics applications, but Im having some problems with the amount of disk space which can be allocated specifically for the Ubuntu install.
I partitioned a 250 GB portable hard drive into:
/dev/sdb1: 154.76 GiB (with 30 GiB allocated for Ubuntu)
/dev/sdb2 : 78.13 GiB
Ive been using blastclust to analyse some very large data sets, which keeps on crashing due to filesystem running out of disk space.
When I installed Bio-Linux 5.0 from the live cd, the maximum size I could allocate to the install was 30 GiB, and I havent been able to find a way to change this.
Ive tried using System->Administration->Partition Editor using the live cd, and can view / delete the partitions, but I cant find a way to specifically alter the disk space allocation for Ubuntu.
How do I increase the filesystem size to larger than the current 30 GiB?
I was happily browsing my new Linux Ubuntu Distribution, and a warning message popped up stating that there's about 145 megs in FIle System. how to solve this problem other than removing files?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a 6x1TB RAID5 set up for testing on ubuntu created with mdadm and formatted with an ext4 fs.
This is being shared over CIFS for windows clients. When looking at the fs from both the file box and the clients, it says 4.47TiB total capacity, and 4.24TiB free space. The only folder is Lost+Found which is empty.
I don't have much experience in Linux filesystems as of yet and I don't understand where this 300 gigs has gone!
Is it something to do with journaling?
The root partition on my server seems to be full. I'd like to find out what files are on that partition and only that partition so I can free up some space on it.

I'm getting an error message that something along the lines of "volume "filesystem root" has only 25mb space remaining". How do I increase the volume size so I never have to worry about it again? This is the 3rd time I've tried ubuntu and it's sticking more and more but this has me thoroughly perplexed. I've got a 320GB HDD partitioned 3 times with a Linux partition being 7GB.

I am running a dual boot system with Win7 on /dev/sda and Ubuntu 10.10 on /dev/sdb
I also have a 250 GB disk I use for storing backup data, /dev/sdc
The two logical partitions on /dev/sdc (/dev/sdc2 and /dev/sdc5) each take up 2.86 GB and I would like to free up that space if possible.
Since the filesystem on /dev/sdc doesn't have an OS on it, does it still require that those two logical partitions exist?
I am not sure whether this is something that can be answered here, but I figured this is the best place to start (next to google not giving me the answer I was looking for). One of our clients are running HPUX as filesystem, however when the support guys need to report the filesystem space they keep getting it wrong. Even after someone gave them the full command which will do the calculations for them, they still seem to make mistakes. On linux the df -h works very weel but this is obviously not available here...can use to display the filesystem space in the correct formats? Even if there is a set of commands that we can work into a script and they can then just run the script.

I have a 22TB xfs filesystem ,Yesterday, the hard disk is full, today released a 7.7T disk space.But still can not write to new file. software ambience:

I tried to install linux, as there was a problem with XP overwriting grub, I chose write grub to /dev/sda8 (which is where the linux install was appearing earlier).
I guess this borked the filesystem somehow. Now the NTFS data partition and the swap space are appearing as one free space.
Well actually before that some linux live CDs (including gparted were seeing the entire drive as unpartitioned). I had to go into XP and delete the /ext4 partitions.
Is there any way for me to recover the NTFS data partition ?
i made space by shrinking my window partition and so i have unallocated and would like to add to sda2 to have more space. Check out this pic. How can i do this?

I was trying to install Fedora 13, on to my laptop. I have 30 GB of unallocated space in extended partition. When trying to install Fedora 13, I got stuck, as the installer says that there is no free space for installation.can convert the unallocated space into free space.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am very new to linux, and I have a question regarding the filesystem check (fsck). The power recently went out and when I tried to restart linux the following error appears:

*An error occured during the file system check. Dropping you to a shell; the system will reboot when you leave the shell. Give root password for maintenance (or type Control-D to continue) I wasn't sure what to do, but checked some other online forums and they suggested running fsck manually - so I typed in the root password - and used the command, "fsck -A -V ; echo == $? ==" it then gave the following message
*WARNING!!! Running e2fsck on a mounted filesystem may cause SEVERE filesystem damage
*Would you like to continue (y/n)
Again, I wasn't sure what to do so i just checked no. I then manually turned off the computer and was prompted at the beginning to press Alt-3. I was brought to another screen and it informed me one of the drives was degraded and suggested rebuilding the array. I tried doing this, but it still brings me back to the original error of, "/dev/sda1 contains file system w/errors, check forced," and the process continues.
Also, when I tried to rebuild the array, I didn't backup any of the data on our home directory before doing this (which was probably a big mistake). After being prompted to type the root password, I was able to give the ls command and look at all the directories...the home directory where our data was stored was empty and I am afraid I may have lost some information. Is there a possibility that data was lost when I was trying to rebuild using the old drives?
Logical Memory Space of 4GB is divided in to 3GB User Space and 1GB Kernel Space. Always. Correct?
1. How can we change it? (just changing value of PAGE_OFFSET is okay?)
2. If system have only 256MB of memory (embedded system) and suppose Kernel Modules eat away all the memory during boot. User space will be left will no memory. Is this case possible?
df -h [URL] I did the following command to find everything is in /usr or /var, then tracked it down to /usr/lib and /usr/share as the main offenders, but out of all the directories none are more than 1mb or so.
du -sh /* | sort -gr | head -n 5
I tried to uninstall firefox, which is what got me in this mess in the first place, the log claims it will remove ~240 mb but failes on a "E: Write error - write (28 No space left on device)" [URL] If I could juggle something onto an external hard drive so I can uninstall firefox I would be out of the wood. Failing that I believe a new install is in order.
I have a following problem: Recently my drive with Ubuntu 9.4 has mysteriously stopped working, i.e. when I switch the computer on it informs me that GRUB didn't find the filesystem. Well, I suppose it happens.
First, I though it was due to the drive dying, but I popped it in an external enclosure and HDTune told me the drive was fine. Wanting to recover the files on the drive before reinstalling I first tried to mount it in said external enclosure under Windows (I have Win Ext2 driver installed which used to work just fine). This time, however, drive gets assigned a letter but upon opening it Windows popped up an error saying that the drive was not formatted and whether I would like to format it then.
Unfazed by this streak of failures I tried to mount it under Linux but, alas, to no avail. I might have tried every single -t operator under mount command but it still won't budge and let me mount.
When I try to boot to OpenSUSE I get the following error during boot-up: unknown filesystem type 'reiserfs' could not mount root filesystem - exiting to /bin/sh$
This only started happening quite recently - before this I could boot to Linux quite happily.
I am trying to mount a file image, like this
mount -o loop /tmp/apps.img /media/apps
But I get the following:
mount: you must specify the filesystem type
I try ext3:
mount -o loop /tmp/apps.img /media/apps -t ext3
dmesg says:
error: can't find ext3 filesystem on dev loop6.
I've also tried ext2, vfat etc. How can I detect the filesystem type of apps.img?
I've had a look at some similar threads but as I'm very new to linux they're already a bit technical for me. Sorry, this calls for someone with patience. I gather from other threads that disconnecting an external drive without unmounting is a no-no, and this seems to be the likely cause. Now the disk is read only and I'm unable to change any settings through the usual control panel on ubuntu. I'm just not familiar with the terminal instructions. I tried to cut and past a few command lines from other threads but I got some warnings that proceding could damage data. Like this one: WARNING! Running e2fsck on a mounted filesystem may cause SEVERE filesystem damage.

After I have doing some reading I noticed that Ubuntu doesn't use the RAW filesystem format and EXT4 filesystem is new so as I manually need to format my disk for Ubuntu I have one question. As the other has been answered.Do I need reformat my GRUB partition as well. If, so what format should that be in?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have never had to do this before But I'm giving my laptop to my mother when my new one arrives and I need to remove the ubuntu installation and get the disk space back.
A few months ago the install stopped working. I can't remember what the error said... and tbh I can't be bothered to reboot twice to read it, but it has to be removed now anyways.
Had a look in windows to see if I can do anything in the disk manager, but it appears I can't. Oh wise ones, please, which path should one take?
Here is my problem. Grub2 outputs error: unknown filesystem. Then when i use "ls" command it outputs this:
(hd0), (hd0,4), (hd0,2), (hd1) and when i "ls (hd0,4)/ or any of them it says: error: no such disk
So, heres my story. I dual boot vista and ubuntu from my main 320GB hdd. Today i tried to fresh install 9.10 on a different external hdd. The 500GB hard drive already had two partitions, a 30GB Fat32 and the rest NTFS. both of these partitions had about 17GB used on them. I installed off a cd and i shrunk the NTFS to allow for more partitions. I made a 4gb swap as logical at the end then a primary ext4 / partition in front of it. The drives are Fat32 sdg0, ntfs sdg1, then an sdg3 (which im confused about and says is extension), and sdg4 (with linux) and sdg5 (swap). When finished with the partitions it asked me to select where to mount the ntfs and i said /windows. When i tried to boot up it did not recognize my external apparently because it was plugged in via firewire. I switched to usb and it booted but then i got the error message in grub. Also, when i switched from firewire to usb the drive changed from sdb to sdg. How do i fix this problem? Will reinstalling ubuntu fix this? Is there an easier way? I tried reinstalling grub but it did not work.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a laptop with windows7 and ubuntu installed. When I installed Ubuntu it created 4 partitions (2 for swap and 2 for ubuntu). Yesterday, a friend of mine deleted one of the partitions (swap+linux) because they weren't being used (weren't even mounted) and he thought I could use the free space. I kept on using the laptop but today I had to reboot it. Instead of getting the usual grub menu I got this:

I've downloaded the "universal USB installer" and am trying to install "Ubuntu 9.10/10.4.1 Desktop i386" to a laptop with no CD drive. I downloaded the iso but when I try to install I get a message that filesystem.squashfs is bad. I tried downloading the .tar file for it but I don't see how to create the file... I'm using a Windows XP machine and don't have a running copy of Linux.
View 2 Replies View Relatedso I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 a couple of days ago and used my whole hard drive.Thing is, I decided that although I loved Ubuntu, I stll want to have dual-boot for some cases.. But now that the disks filesystem is not NTFS, Windows cannot regognise the disk as installable and cannot convert the filesystem. Gosh, Windows is a piece of junk, but I still need them for some occasions.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am installing Ubuntu 9.04 Desktop on my system. using entire disk. my disk is new one. first time i installed ubuntu on it successfully, used it and installed new kernel and some upgrades. all were successful.but on installing some drivers, its files system corrupted. so I had the need to re-install the OS again. NOW , when i am installing the OS, it gives error "(Errno 30] Read only filesystem" explaining that either CD/DVD is corrupt or HDD is corrupt. temperature of the environment may be high. I changed the system , ehanged the environment, moved to some cool place, changed CD drive and CD (after making new one from ISO), changed the HDD but all useless, error is there,
while installation is in progress my sda1 is mount on /target. when i see fstab, here in the line of /dev/sda1 ,error=remount-ro is observed. sometime installation gives error no 5 sometimes it gives error no 30 but both the errors convey almost same message explaining that either HDD is corrupt or CD. As i have explained that I changed every thing including HDD and CD but the error is same.
Question:Several months ago I upgraded my hard drive on a dual boot machine (xp & U9.10 - both 64bit) from approx 80gb to 250gb. I chose to use DriveClone from windows to clone the old drive directly to the new drive. Operational everything works fine. the problem is the Ubuntu HD size went from around 10GB to approx 150Gb, but the filesystem only recognizes approx. 10GB as the total available capacity. I just tried to reinstall Ubuntu without reformatting and only recovered a few GB's. GParted reports the proper partition size. Is there any way I can correct this problem? It's not a big issue...I thought I would check here first before I reformatted the partition. The pre-boot disk check ran and reported no errors but the file system is still not seeing the unused GB's.
