Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 - Home Folders Missing After Upgrade

Aug 8, 2010

This evening I went through the upgrade process to 10.04. The entire process went well until reboot time. At that point fsck was run and stopped after checking the first physical hard drive. After some time I skipped (s). When I tried to log in, warning messages informed me that Nautilus could not access it's folders in our home folder. ls /home/ brings up nothing, nada zilch. Some poking around confirms that the drive is there but Ubuntu seems unaware of it.

The configuration:
Physical hd #1 is: sda a 40Gb hard drive with windows and Ubuntu / and swap.
Physical hd #2 is: sdb a 120Gb hard drive with our /home partitions.
Seems Ubuntu is simply not detecting the drive?

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade 10.10 To 11.04 Option Missing On CD?

Apr 28, 2011

I downloaded the release version of 11.04 desktop 32bit today and ran into a problem with the upgrade. Not sure if I missed a step or not, but when I booted the CD to do an Install of 11.04 desktop 32bit over 10.10 desktop 32bit I expected to see the upgrade option similar to what is in this link (red arrow pointing to it):[URL]... On my install screen all the other options were there except the upgrade.

Since I was on a schedule for this particular computer I am doing the Update Manager Network upgrade instead but I have 3 other computers to do as well. Any ideas on what I might have missed? Should I have booted to Live version first instead of Install then look for an upgrade option somewhere? I read something that alluded to that on a website.

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Upgrade Home Computer From 10.10 To 11.04

Apr 30, 2011

I upgraded the computer at work from 10.10 to 11.04 yesterday and that went okay. Some issues, but I can work them out. I thought I'd get the computer at home done yesterday too, but that failed. I'm now operating off of a USB drive. I also have Windows7 that I was able to function off of (probably have 3 hours logged on Windows in the last 4 months). Anyway, I have an AMD64 with 4 hard drives, of which we have 2 RAID settings so it's more like 2 hard drives.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub2 Missing Files After Upgrade?

Jan 28, 2011

Last night I attempted to upgrade my Ubuntu 10.10 (amd64) machine. After reboot (it installed a new kernel), the grub menu only had the memtest. Booted into a livecd and it seems that I was missing most of the files in /etc/grub.d/. Reinstalled grub-common and grub-pc didn't seem to restore the files. I ended up having to download the dpkg, expand it and copy the files manually so I could get the box generate grub.conf and boot up. I think grub may have been broken before the upgrade but exhibited the problem when it upgraded the kernel and reran upgrade-grub but I can't seem to figure out why reinstalling grub doesn't add the files back.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade To Lucid With /home Partition?

May 13, 2010

I just need some clarification on the best upgrade path for me. I currently have Karmic installed with a separate partition for /home. I want to do a clean install of lucid with the CD.

What's the safest way to ensure my /home partition remains untouched? Should I install lucid overtop the karmic partition and then indicate a mount point for the other partition? or should I leave /home alone completely during installation and then just manually configure the mount point after install?

Edit: I had previously upgraded from jaunty to karmic via the update manager. This worked well but Karmic has felt very buggy overall so I feel a clean install might be best. although the audio is silent when the live cd boots :S

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Mount Downloaded Home Partition After Upgrade

May 6, 2010

When I had 9.10 installed I had /home and / on separate partitions but this time, I wanted them both within the same. I downloaded my old home partition to an external drive, wiped the old partitions and installed lucid but now I can't mount the drive. I am trying to use:

Code:
sudo mount -o loop -t auto /mnt/storage/home.img /mnt/oldhome/
but I get an error of wrong fs type, bad option or bad superblock.
fdisk -l shows:

Code:
Disk /mnt/storage/home.img: 0 MB, 0 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 0 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x00000000

Disk /mnt/storage/home.img doesn't contain a valid partition table. But in nautilus it shows it as the full 23.6 gb its supposed to be?

I know a clean install is an option however I am tempted by online version upgrades with the thought that any apps they are using will be carried over. Is this a realistic hope? I know that medibuntu for example does not survive a version upgrade.

Ubuntu Installation :: Lost Access To Home After Clean Upgrade?

Oct 25, 2010

I used to use Ubuntu 9.10 for a year. I had my home path on different partition (19Gb) than the system partition (12Gb). Before I upgraded, the free space on Home partition (19Gb) was 6.3Gb. I knew that the direct upgrade is not good, so, I format the system partition (12Gb). Then, I install clean version of Ubuntu 10.04 on it. every thing is great. except that, I can not find my files in the old home path. In same time, Ubuntu is telling me that the Home partition (19Gb) (which I have not touch at all) has free space of 6.3Gb and used space of 11.3Gb. It means it can recognize that there is something but it can not open it at all.

system information:

Ubuntu 10.04 (lucid)
Gnome 2.30.2
2.6.32-25-generic

Ubuntu Installation :: Missing Network Manager Applet And Broken Kde After Upgrade To 10.04

May 1, 2010

I was running Ubuntu 9.10 on my HP G70 laptop and did an upgrade using upgrade manager to Ubuntu 10.04.

Since I haven't been able to get wifi connection or wired working. The Network Manager applet is missing from the notification area and if I try to run nm-applet manually it says it is already running. I tried killing the process and then running it manually in the terminal and although the process appears to be running it is missing from the panel.

Booting into the live cd has the applet working fine so something in the upgrade process must have failed.

I tried changing the theme to see if it displays in other themes but had no luck.

I also tried to log into kde but kde seems to be broken. When I log into it after the splash screen all I get is a black screen with only my mouse pointer.

Ubuntu Installation :: Missing Rights To Run Java Applet In Browser After Upgrade To 10.04?

May 7, 2010

I'm having a very strange error after upgrading to (K)Ubuntu 10.04.. basically Java Applets don't work in any browser (tried with Firefox, Chrome and Opera). The applet loads (plugin and JVM detected by all browsers) but it is grayed out. After trying all possible solutions I could think of (including installing alternatives jvm) I tried to run the browser as superuser: the applet is then working correctly. So somehow it seems to be a user right problem, but I'm not sure where this is coming from, both java (sun-6) and the browsers were installed and working ok in 9.10. Here is the directory list of /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/lib/i386

Code:

drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4.0K 2010-05-07 14:03 client

Ubuntu Installation :: Version Upgrade - Reinstall - Preserve /home Method?

Sep 18, 2010

I will be version-upgrading a friends (Ubuntu only) laptop very soon. It is 9.04 now and the new version will be (ideally) 10.04.1 The machine has a large unused area on the hard drive and who has known this situation was to use the uncommitted area to do a complete new install of 10.04.1, leaving the 9.04 unchanged (useful insurance). Then, copy, paste (?) the /home directory from the 9.04 into the newly completed installed 10.04.1 overwriting the installed directory.

Opinions seem to support the notion that such a paste into 10.04.1 is likely to be successful and trouble free as long as the 10.04.1 installing username is the same as the 9.04 username with same privilege level. I would be grateful for comments here, particularly with any details, gotchas, you can see.

Ubuntu :: Home Folders Appear On My Desktop?

The problem i have is that the folders i create in my home folder (/home/USRNAME/) now appear on my desktop (but not inside the desktop folder... since it no longer exists, u'll see). After a clean install of 11.04, there were a few default folders in my home folder (documents, music, videos, etc) however, i decided to rename them. After doing that, all of them (even the ones i didnt rename, like ubuntu one and templates appeared on my desktop (but not the desktop folder). I thought they were links, so i deleted the ones i saw on my desktop, and to my suprise, all the folders in my home folder have disappeared! Now everytime i create a new folder in my home folder it appears on my desktop, on top of my wallpaper, and if i delete either of them, both go away.

Fedora Installation :: Missing Data In Logical Volume /work After Upgrade From F9 To F10

Jan 10, 2009

I've just upgraded from F9 to F10. I can boot okay but I seem to have lost some data in one of my logical volumes. My drive is organised as follows:

/dev/mapper/main_group-various: UUID="f7c452cf-9f03-4f97-8676-b71b07a812aa" TYPE="ext3" SEC_TYPE="ext2"
/dev/mapper/main_group-root: UUID="173f1845-72c9-49e8-9d49-2a5776c4267c" TYPE="ext3" SEC_TYPE="ext2"

The logical volume for work still seems to be there. I presume (and hope) that all the information in /dev/main_group/work is still there. How can the folders in /dev/main_group/work be retrieved?

OpenSUSE Install :: Safest Way To Upgrade Using New Installation While Keeping Existing Home?

May 23, 2011

Having read several threads and received excellent previous advice there are just a couple of points I want to check please before proceeding on laptop. I want to upgrade to 11.4 from 11.2. My disk setup is as follows:-

Disk /dev/sda: 120.0 GB, 120034123776 bytes
240 heads, 63 sectors/track, 15505 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 15120 * 512 = 7741440 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x462d462c

[Code]..

If I select existing /home root and swap partitions, format root but prevent formatting of /home and use a different user ID I believe that will leave my existing data intact and will allow me to trial new os. Is this correct approach? If all goes well and when I have new system working correctly, what is best way make old user id date accessible. Can I simply create my old id on new system and will that allow me to access data when I log on with that id?

Second question; at present I have the ability to boot to openSUSE, OS/2 and windoze. (It used to be done entirely by Boot Manager but during my last Linux installation I messed this up a bit so now machine boots to grub and this offers all three operating systems but chain loads Boot Manager if I select OS/2)

When I do the new installation what should I select to retain this setup so that I still have access to windoze and OS/2 but when selecting linux have new 11.4 system run.
