Upgraded to Natty,just after I got this new GPU - ATi Radeon HD 6850.
I cannot activate the driver for it, I have also tried to download and install from AMD but it didn't work. I cannot open the catalyst control centre that is already installed.
When I try I get this.
"system error: Install archives() failed"
When I open the software update application I get this
"Items cannot be installed or removed until the package catalogue is repaired. Do you want to repair it now?"
So click yes. The process is:

I have Ubuntu 11.04 on a netbook, and I'm getting a lot of tearing on video playback--both online and offline. The graphics card is some generic intel card, and there doesn't seem to be a driver for it. So, is there a way to enable vsync without having a proprietary driver?
The AMD tool ATI Catalyst does not provide Linux support for the ATI HD 6850. Running the tool allows the monitor to display in 1080P. However, it results in a watermark stating the hardware isn't supported.
Is there an open source driver that will support this card?
Can the Windows driver be co-opted for Linux?

i upgraded my ubuntu 9.10(karmic) to ubuntu 10.04 (lucid) by executing the commands " apt-get update apt-get dist-upgrade" one at a time in terminal after finishing upgrade ,i restarted my system, after restarting i can't access GUI (interface) in UPGRADED version ,it prompts me to terminal interface. how to enable proprietary drivers.., about enabling proprietary drivers! and also i used startx command it prompts me to gui but i can't access my keyboard and mouse or any other input devices.
I installed my version of 10.10 with the VMWare Player Auto Installer, and I know when you install Ubuntu 10.10 it asks if you want to install the proprietary drivers.The install must have said no to this question. Is there anyway without re-installing of getting back to this question?
I had, with much delight, accomplished a dual boot install of Ubuntu 9.1.0 and Windows 7 the other day and everything was working perfectly fine. However, I decided to activate the proprietary Nvidia drivers that were available in the drivers menu and my system subsequently no longer operates. After installing and rebooting Ubuntu will no longer work and becomes stuck on a black screen with two white dashes in the top right had of the screen.
This hang up occurs directly after the first white Ubuntu logo appears during the startup and the only key that will work during this screen are Crtl + Alt + F1, which only bring up a second black screen except with a solid white dash in the top right screen. At that point no key will work. I have tried to fix things in recovery mode and used envyng to remove the nvidia drivers as well as other operations, however the same result still appears when I try and run Ubuntu. I own a Sony Vaio Z690C if it makes any difference.
Card is the Radeon x300 and in the past in a wubi install I installed the propreitary ATI driver. I'd like to do that with this installation too. I've located the proper driver and tried to run in the terminal.

My laptop runs really hot and after reading a few threads around the forum I came across one that said it was because of the fact that ubuntu comes with an open source driver.All you have to do is update to the proprietary driver and everything is fixed. So I went to the menu and looked for the driver. I honestly didn't check if the one that was found was compatible with my graphics card, I just assumed that the one that it found was the right one. I installed it and restarted and ubuntu wouldn't load. It goes through the initial load but when it comes time to bring up the login page, it stays black and never advances. I assumed that this was a result of an incorrect driver. Again, I turned to the forums and found that other people had this problem. So I grabbed my trusty live CD and tried to load up a live session and remove the config file that points to the driverThe live CD wouldn't load. Same thing for recovery mode. I need a quick answer if possible, is it better to remove the proprietary drivers before upgrading to 10.04 from 9.10? Or should i have the open source drivers installed? A clean install is not an option on this machine.
I've got an eight-year old PC that I'd like to breath some new life into. I was using it for my old scanner (HP, no longer supported by MS or HP), but when my Windows installation finally died I thought it was a perfect time to try Ubuntu. (Xsane running under Ubuntu does support that scanner.) I can get Ubuntu started on it, but when I try to activate/install the recommended Nvidia OEM driver, the system gets sick. Ordinarily I'd not worry about it, but the system only starts into low graphics mode, which leaves some dialogs too large for the display and partially unusable or worse. The PC is a cheap homebrew, using an A7N266-VM ASUS mb. It has some kind of Nvidia chipset on board, but no graphics accelerator.
so i got myself in way over my head too soon with Ubuntu but i really like the OS.. I installed 10.10 on my HP laptop according to the directions on [URL]. Everything went well and I had no problems until I came across a thread about aircrack-ng.. I decided to test how vulnerable my own connection was after getting scared by looking up some how-to videos on ..... that made it look a little to easy. I was having a ton of problems with the injections tests and couldnt get it to work. I was trying to patch my ath5k driver according to some threads i found on this forum and couldn't get it to work. I finally found a thread somewhere about editing the base.c file to fix the driver. Well, being a noob i have no idea what i did but it wasn't good... yep, shake your head.. i deserve it haha.. anyway....
When i rebooted the comp after finishing the editing process it came up with all kinds of errors and brought me to a grub rescue prompt.. Yikes!! luckily i had Ubuntu 10.10 on a usb so i restarted, tried to delete the partition it was on with gparted and then tried to reinstall it.. The installation worked and now I can boot into windows again from the grub loader with no problems, but Ubuntu is all screwy.. Windows connects to the internet and doesn't seem to be phased in the slightest bit but ubuntu won't let me stay connected to any wireless networks and I also get a failed message when i try to activate the nvidia driver in Ubuntu.. Man, did i learn a lesson about getting ahead of myself and trying to bite off more than I can chew! I really love Ubuntu and the open source ideal so I don't want to let this sour me..
At the partition select prompt when I reinstalled ubuntu I selected "partition my drive manually" or something to that effect. Should I have installed it along side windows via the other option? I have a feeling my problem was compounded when i tried to erase the partition Ubuntu was on but now I'm totally lost and I really don't want to screw up my comp any more! I figured it's time to ask for help instead of shooting in the dark searching random threads for a similar experience which may not be similar at all.
Is there a way to repartition everything from windows without losing my data and reinstalling Ubuntu? I didn't have anything worth saving on Ubuntu but i have about 100gb worth of stuff on my windows partition i don't wanna lose! If I forgot to add any necessary information let me know and i'll be happy to provide any info I can.

I'm still trying to learn the ropes on linux as a whole and I've run into sort of a huge dilema. I wanted to connect my laptop to my TV via VGA. However, it would not work because I didn't have the proprietary graphics driver for my graphics card (Nvidia Quadro NVS 3100M). I searched the internet and found the guide below because the guide provided here did not specify Quadro family graphics cards[URL]I followed the "easy method" to the T. Now I cannot boot into Fedora 15 at all (I'm stuck on bloody Windows 7 again ). It simply freezes at the boot animation (the "F" in the bubble). What can I do to fix this

There is one thing missing (I think) a clear guide to clearing out Nvidia and replacing it with nouveau. For all but hardened gamers, nouveau on 11.4 delivers. It also removes one more barrier to what I think is the intended goad of Tumbleweed.The problem IMHO is not that there are no clear guides. The problem is there are too many. No sooner does one person do a guide (that is clear) and someone else who does not like some point writes another guide that they think is more clear (but in fact is less clear in other aspects). And this goes on ad infinitum.IMHO we have too many guides - many of which are sufficient clear ... but the VAST number only serves to confuse users more.

I just installed Linux Mint 9 as a dual boot install with Win XP. Trying to activate wireless network card driver and video driver. Pops up: "You are not authorized to perform this action".How do I get authorized?
Now every time I boot Win XP, the Internet Explorer menu bar is all blacked out and goofy. If I log out and back in it corrects itself. If I reboot it's blacked out again. Re-installed IE8. Still blacks out.Also Firefox in Win XP crashes expectantly. It has NEVER crashed on me previously.
I installed the 4gb persistent version to a usb drive to use on a emachines netbook with 250gb hard drive. Everything worked great from USB had the wireless going and all. Decided to install it to the HDD, followed the steps at the Ubuntu start menu, install from USB. Followed all recommended procedures during install, split the HDD in Half (the only thing on there was windows 7 just bought this thing) at the partition window.
Ubuntu loads fine but when trying to load the wireless driver as before with the usb it doesnt activate. I have to enter in a password, it seems to accept it, a download screen comes up, I see keys going over to the wireless icon and....nothing.
Then tried to load up windows 7...uh oh. I see windows 7 and a windows vista os at the initial option screen. I selected windows 7 and it brought me back, so I selected windows vista and now it is having me recover. I chose the basic recovery first hoping it was due to moving the partition. It is recovering now but I am really worried if it's going to work again as windows 7, vista ?, wipe out Ubuntu or what!
Also, already rebooted Ubuntu a couple times, no luck with driver install

I did a clean install of Ubuntu 11.04 on my desktop which has a Nvidia GForce 7300LE card. Installation was successful, however, the moment I install Nvidia Current driver the system hangs. The only way I was able to get the system working was by doing a fresh install.
I'm having problems with my Nvidia card. X doesn't work after installation (9.10), only command prompt. I've read the instructions at http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/nvidia on how to enable Nvidia drivers, but the instructions are only for GUI, which I don't have. i have bought a new Asus k42jr notebook with no OS. Ihave an old version of an ubuntu cd 7.04. i have installed the cd successfully but it does not recognize the network adapter (lan), audio driver and the bluetooth. how can I enable my LAN so that i can upgrade my Ubuntu to the newest version. BTW, i use another another notebook to check on how to enable my network driver. - this notebook has no cd writer installed and the new laptop does not allow me to boot from the USB.
I want to create diskless comupters for a lan party using an nfs root. My problem is that this root filesystem should be usable on different hardware (AMD / nVidia graphic cards) and I need the best performance.
My question is : Is there a way to activate automatically proprietary driver on startup without modifying root filesystem ?
I have used the NVidia proprietary drivers for awhile. Yes, I know about nv and I even know about the prepackaged ones, but I've never minded getting the latest from NVidia, dropping out of X, and running the install which automatically rebuilds everything.
I recently took the synaptic update to 2.6.32-24. It worked fine and -- I guess -- migrated my driver. I didn't think about it. For no particular reason today I tried to build the latest NVIDIA driver (256.53 -- had been on an earlier 256 series). The build failed with some conftest failures. Even trying to rebuild the working driver failed. Reverting to 2.6.32-23 allowed both to be built and they work. So something the NVIDIA installer is expecting headerwise must be different between 2.6.32-23 and -24.
Installing Mythbuntu 10.10, which I finally got installed properly. At first I installed the open-source video drivers just to make sure the installation worked, then I installed the "version current" proprietary drivers using the graphics drivers manager...tool...thing. However, when I restarted the computer, it has a text-mode splash screen and I stay in the first virtual terminal.
If I try to go to the GUI "terminal" [Ctrl-Alt-F7], it appears to be partway through some kind of check:

I ran sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg to try to get back to the open-source drivers, but it didn't give any text output and went straight to the next line of command prompt, when I restarted it did the exact same thing. Any tips for at least getting back to the open drivers? I'd like to not have to reinstall again (I'm dual-booting WinXP,). The card in question is a GeForce 6200 AGP.
I'm afraid I only have basic experience with *nix command lines and have only been using Ubuntu for a week, so I may require a little bit of hand holding on something as nuts-and-bolts as a driver issue.

The Symptoms/Experience: Under the default installation of Ubuntu, I have no sound. When I install the proprietary ATI drivers, I have sound. I can uninstall and reinstall the proprietary drivers and recreate this every time.
My only problem with using the proprietary driver is that there's a lot of problems with video playback that is fixed with the free, default driver. But when I use it, I have no sound and watching a movie is still not very fun. From everything I read, many people are using the provided ATI driver with sound and fixing that should be easier than fixing the ATI driver's video tearing, which has largely stumped the community. Having failed to install "OSS" and now having no sound with either driver, I'm probably going to reformat/reinstall today but am looking forward to fixing this issue.
I'm running a slightly upgraded Dell Inspiron B120 with 2 Gig RAM, 200 Gig HD. I recently switched this laptop from XP to Ubuntu 9.10. After many a long hour, I was able to get World of Warcraft running under wine but its slow to the point of being unplayable. I was used to slow gameplay on this laptop under XP, but 0 fps is a new low. Dalaran (the notoriously laggiest place in the game) is a joke. There's a 5-10 sec lag between hitting the button to move and actually going anywhere. I took all the video settings down to the minimum and did a regedit to add a key for wine.
Basically I tried all the tips and tricks I could find (including creating an xorg.conf file since I didn't have one). Nothing I did worked. I can be in the most remote, unpopulated spot in the game and I can't get more than 3fps. Somewhere I read that I should install a proprietary driver for my video card (intel GMA 900). So I went out and downloaded xf86-video-intel-2.10.0 and ran the configure script that came with it. It came back and said

Now I am new to linux but in poking around the file system I did see /etc/X11/ which had some stuff in it. To me that says that I've got X11 installed but then again I've been using linux since breakfast so what do I know? What do I need to do to install a proprietary video driver -OR- what can I do to get the game running well enough to be playable (short of walking over to my windows desktop computer)?
Everything works great at the moment, no hardware problems or anything like that. But whenever I enable the proprietary nVidia driver 185, it causes the boot screen to not come up, Ubuntu stops recognising my sound-card and refuses to work and when I try to shut down or restart, it just takes me back to the log in screen. When I remove the driver, everything works okay again.
Is it possible to enable the desktop effects without enabling the proprietary driver? Im using an Asus 51vx with Nvidia Geforece GTX 260m and the proprietary drivers kind of suck. My resolutions (although set correctly) are distorting pictures, my dual monitors is being funky and unpredictable... etc. Everything works great without the drivers installed except i cant enable advanced desktop features so my awn looks good . I know its just cosmetics, but i love my cosmetics, and they took a loooong time to get perfect.

I installed the proprietary driver in System->Administration->Additional Drivers, but after installing when I am required to restart, I restart my computer and encounter a black screen. I tried using Ctrl-Alt-'-" to change the resolution but that didn't work because the computer is completely frozen, so I have to reboot in recovery and uninstall the driver...
This also makes it so I am unable to go to the maximum resolution my desktop can obtain. (1920 x 1200, but I'm limited to 1600 x 1200)
