Ubuntu Installation :: U10.10 Can't Load GUI / Make It Possible?
Jan 8, 2011
After using the "nomodeset" option from the live cd I was able to get the live CD to boot to perform the install onto an SSD.
Upon the first boot I get the same screen that I was presented without the "nomodeset" option specified on the live cd and I'm pretty stumped as to how to get this machine booting now... here's a picture of the lovely screens I get.
Sorry in advance for the GIGANTIC picture... but perhaps the gibberish will stimulate your thread-answering abilities

I had Fedora 7 and Windows Vista dual booting on my computer. I just installed Fedora 10. When the live CD asked me where to install it, I chose "Remove all Linux Partitions and create default layout" The installation went perfectly, but now when reboot my computer, it boots directly into Fedora; GRUB does not load to ask me which OS I want to load. I know I did not overwrite Vista because I can still view my Vista files through Fedora. Here is my grub.conf file:
[Code]...
What do I need to do to make GRUB load again upon booting?

I'm trying to install Ubuntu (9.10) on my sisters computer. I have installed ubuntu 9.10, but when I try to boot it from hard drive, it would stop loading a bit after the logo appears. The screen would turn off while the system is still running. Live version of Ubuntu works after reports of errors. I tried to search for the problem all over the forum, and could not find a good lead to figure out the problem.
So far to figure out the problem, I verified if cd is corrupted. No issues there. Googled the problem, and seems like other users were able to install 7.04 (old posts).
Its so weird though that live version works and the installed version does not.
Here are my specs:
I can post logs, but I'm not sure which one is useful as I'm relatively new to this process.

I edited some file in /etc and it stopped loading, but after upgrading to natty it loads again. I'm already starting X manually from /etc/event.d/tty7, but the X started from gdm is the one I see on the screen. I don't have a keyboard, so I can't switch to the console with the right X after startup. Is the only option to deinstall gdm, or is there a way to make it not start?

I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop, and am amazed how well everything is working, even on my dual-monitor setup! But, I also have a problem with said setup. I downloaded and installed the XBMC media center, but whenever I open up the application, it displays across both monitors. Since my two monitors are of different sizes and at different heights, it looks really bad. Is there a way to always force it to load on just one monitor?

I'm wondering if anyone can tell me how to make rhythmbox appear when I load it? At the moment it just puts an icon in my notification tray. However, I just want it to appear so I can choose music! Does anyone know how I can just make rhythmbox appear on screen when I start it up?On a related note, does anyone know why rhythmbox has this odd behaviour? If I'm starting the music program, there's pretty much a 100% chance I want to start playing music, and I can't do that without looking at my music list in the player. So why would it not appear by default?

This nvidia driver is driving me nuts... I have tried everything I can think of including multiple solutions from threads.
I have a GeForce FX5200 with the nvidia-current drivers installed. On boot I receive the following error messages... code...
If I try and open the nvidia server settings I get the following message.
You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server.
In Jockey I get:
The driver is activated but not currently in use.
I am using headers 2.6.32-23 and have updated to grub2 (something that seems to have fixed a mismatched header issue for others). I have uninstalled and reinstalled drivers, edited the xorg.conf with nvidia-xconfig as well as manually and I don't know what else to do... any suggestions would be appreciated... 640x480 is crap.

I have Ubuntu 10.04 LTS installed on my HP Compaq Presario CQ60. Unfortunately the screen is busted & I'm using an external LCD. It boots directly onto the LCD, but the resolution is 800x600 by default, the only other option is 640x480. I'm assuming its using the VESA drivers for the graphics. I've managed to temporarily fix the resolution to 1024x768 by running the following in terminal for every session:
[code]...
I've added a document to /etc/init.d so that it may be loaded on startup, but it does not seem to work.

I put the KDE NOIPV6 in the /etc/environment file, but nothing happened it seems.
The problem = Midori / other browsers are too unstable with Flash; but Konqueror is lightning-fast with Flash and apparently takes up the least resources too. But the problem with that is, the aforementioned 20 seconds to 2 minute web page load time, even though I have 5-8 MBps cable Internet.
Midori is a little slow too to load web pages, now that I think about it, but faster once I have first visited a domain.

I am using Suse 11.4, with the Gnome desktop. I have downloaded the VLC player, but cannot work out how to make it play CDs in the CD drive. Right clicking on the Audio Disc icon that appears on the desktop whenever I load a disc doesn't give me an option to Play using VLC. Is there a way to make VLC the default player for CDs?

Above adapter can be installed on v10.2 and 11.3 using ndiswrapper:-
1. Copy the 3 driver files from Windows:- like netwpn111.inf, WPN111.sys & ar5523.bin.
(Be carfeul about the exact names, because they have changed over time).
2. sudo ndiswrapper -i netwpn111.inf
3. sudo ndiswrapper -m
4. sudo modprobe ndiswrapper (the adapter should light up at this point and networks will be detected shortly after - see network manager). (Be careful of paths here - e.g. I had to use /sbin/modprobe - so 'whereis' may be necessary to find these commands).
2nd When I reboot, I need to run the modprobe command again. How do I make the module load automatically on boot? Also (and this is minor), can I bypass the KWallet, keyring thing? it seems silly to enter a password for the keyring and then click another password dialog, when I can just as easily enter the password for the network itself.

I'm trying to install ubuntu on a laptop (Acer Aspire 6530), and duel boot with windows vista. However, when starting up the computer with the CD in the drive, the installer fails to load, showing only a picture at the bottom of the screen showing a square and a circle with a person in it... This persists for as long as I have cared to wait (hours) and pressing keys at first results in nothing, then after sufficient key presses just produces beeps...
Anyone know what's wrong there?

Being a former user of Fedora, i decided I'd like to give Ubuntu a try and install so i could switch from a windows environment for ruby on rails development.I downloaded the 10.10 ISO and burned the image to a DVD-RW (a cheap one) at 4xI'm deployed in afghanistan right now, and the only decent internet connection i have is in my office (i work in the network administration/operations office as a NETOPS NCO) and even then my downloads rarely exceed 50kbps. I also don't really have the best pick when it comes to writable media, i'm stuck with imation "plus" cd-r's and dvd-rw's.
After i burned the image to disc, i deleted the iso from my computer since i'm genereally not suppossed to keep personal files on work computers. When i boot to the disc it takes about 45 minutes on average to load into the live environment to do the install or try ubuntu, if i select try ubuntu it's another 10 minutes before it's done loading. The install is even slower, generally takes several hours to complete the install, once the install is complete and i select ubuntu in grub, i get a { DRDY ERR } ru When it tries to load ubuntu and kicks me back into the shell. Nothing appears to be wrong with my hard drive, checkdisk finds nothing.
General specs are:Intel Core i7 i7-720QM / 1.6 GHz 8GB DDR3 1333mhz ram2x 500gb hd'sBlu-ray/dvd/cd driveFull specs are at: the laptop is a g73jh-a1http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/asus...-33950895.htmlI'm downloading the iso again and i'm going to try and burn it to a cd-r at the slowest possible speed, I'm mainly curious if it could be fualt of the disc i burned or if it has something to do with my computer.

When i open one of the web browsers i use and try to load a web site it's taking to long to respond and sometimes it doesnt load the website at all. I have tried with firefox, epiphany, opera with all the same results. I am sure that this is not a problem with my internet connection because i don't have these problems with windows. Also the network manager connection settings are correct
I also tried choosing the old kernel(2.6.32.24) to boot from but no success. The problem is the same as if i am using the 2.6.32.25 kernel. The strange thing is that i can download packages from synaptic with full speed. Last think.I have recently downloaded the recommended updates from the update manager but i don't remember what are the things that where updated.

I recently installed it on my EeePC 901, I know that this is a very limited system to be using it on, and I've been getting warnings from the OS when I started updating it, that my drive was running out of space. Now my 901 has two tiny SSDs in it, one 4GB, one 16GB. The Smaller 4GB is somewhat faster than the 16GB, so I've used it to install Ubuntu onto, but as I mentioned, it's running out of space.Could someone help me even out the load between the drives, like for example, by having all my documents and applications I install myself on the 16GB drive, while keeping the most essential OS parts on the 4GB drive.

I have installed Ubuntu 10.04 using alternate installation as a complete new OS on an Intell Pentium3 with 896MB RAM - twice. After both installations (there ran smoothly), I got stuck at the exact same point upon trying to boot:
once the purple splash appears with the Grey bar in the bottom (showing the time), the painting of the users window always gets stuck: it shows the red Ubuntu logo and the host name. Sometimes it will render the users list, sometime just part of it. This is as far as it gets.
I have a mouse cursor responsive, but the keyboard is stuck and no mouse clicks are effective. Nothing on the screen is clickable - I must restart cold using the machine button.
Are there machines where Ubuntu can't be installed? Is this going to be the end of my Linux experience?

Installed Ubuntu 9.10 twice on a relatively new 1TB hard disk but still get the same slowwww boot problem. Harddisk was formatted with WinXP but when I installed Ubuntu 9.10 selected erase partition and installed Ubuntu 9.10 using the entire disk. Granted it is a old CPU - Opteron 165 with 1GB DDR1 ram in a Shuttle SN25P. But should it still take 5mins to boot !! I new relatively new to Ubuntu but I don't think that it should take that long to boot.

So I recently tried to install Ubuntu Lucid in the following configuration code...
The installation procedure went fine, and it said it had successfully installed GRUB2. But then, when I tried to boot up the fresh system, GRUB2 didn't even load!!
It's not giving me any GRUB errors, or giving me a 'grub recovery>' prompt, so I suspect that it really isn't even booting into GRUB.
I tried booting into the LiveCD, and installing grub to BOTH /dev/sda and /dev/sdb, but it still does not work, and I am at a loss.
Has anybody else had this problem?

Does anyone know how ltsp is supposed to load in a 10.04 Edubuntu install? The live CD worked beautifully, providing me with a gui under "applications/other" with which I could successfully test my thin clients. But once I actually installed Edubuntu (through the live CD), there was no ltsp configuration at all, the gui was gone and there was no visible way to install ltsp. There wasn't even an option in the DVD install routine the way there was in previous versions.
