View 1 Replies View RelatedI hope that I am not repeating a thread.I can connect successfully to HotSpots in the sense that I can see the network and connect to it. However, I cannot browse. After I open FireFox I am supposed to be brought automatically to the login page, but instead it keeps saying "connecting to..." until it fails with an error message. After researching a bit further, I have found out that this happens when the package ubuntu-restricted-extras has been installed. All works perfectly before installing this package. This has been going on for quite a few releases now, I think since 9.04 at least. I have come up with this problem on three completely different computers, so I would say that the hardware is not the problem. This issue also happens with Epiphany and Konqueror, so I presume that it's not a problem with the browser neither.Rather, it looks to me like one of the many packages that are installed with ubuntu-restricted-extras causes the problem.

I've got Ubuntu 10.4 and have been using Rhythmbox to play CDs. When I put a CD in it would always be recognised and Rhythmbox would display the artist and song titles. Today I installed the following package:ubuntu-restricted-extrasThis was so I could rip CDs to MP3s. This worked, however it seems to have also had the side effect of preventing Rhythmbox from retrieving information about audio CDs. If I run Rhythmbox from a shell I get the following debug:

For some reason bash is acting really really weird. When I use my gui terminal, and I tryto use tab completion, it freezes up the terminal, and I can't edit the line at all unless I do a ctrl+c.and when I try to do tab completion in text only mode it prints out : "Error: Can't open display: (null)"again and again and again, and I have to do a ctrl+c, also in text only mode it will randomly log me out. I have tried checking for blown caps, but there weren't any, and all the other programs work fine except for the command line. I am using bash version: 4.1.5(1)-releaseand gnome-terminal version: 2.30.2

Instead the boot screen (image attached so you know what I mean) remains displayed for the entire installation. Fresh Install of lucid today,everything went fine. Installed compiz, fine, now I'm downloading the restricted extras through synaptic and wow, its going 10 to 20 kB/s. Tried downloading a file from cnet, no problem. 800+ kB/s. Think this is just related to heavy volume today?

who installed nvidia drivers on Ubuntu 10.04 and gets a terminal screen on reboot with no GUI.I came across this fix trying to install the drivers on Ubuntu 10.10. later i find that the same thing happens to me on 10.04 but one of the fixes i came across works perfect with it. Ok, so you just installed ubuntu 10.04 updated it through update manager and installed your nvidia drivers but when you rebooted and tried to log on you find yourself in a terminal interface well i found an easy fix for that.
i hope it works for you not saying it will though im new to the linux world only just coming out of windows and i dont know much anyways just log on the terminal and use command "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" then run nvidia-xconfig command reboot and you should be fine only wish this would work for ubuntu 10.10

My question is can I still install restricted extras to get addition applications installed, without corrupting my apps already installed? Or should I just manually install the remaining items from restricted extras manually?

The only thing working is the mouse, but unable to click anything. Keyboard is death at the point. Is there a logfile from the system that let me see the problem? Did not have freezes with 11.2.

So when I first boot the pc, the 3 versions appear. Normally, that wouldn't seem like a problem "although I don't know why don't the new ones simply delete the old ones"..However, the new ones don't work. Only the oldest form which I installed through a CD is the one that works. The others just cause the computer screen to flash a couple of times and freezes.

I have tried using Synaptic and the Software Center, all installs go fine, no errors, but I cant see them in the CCSM. Everything is working very well and bug free for me.
