Ubuntu Installation :: Synaptic Doesn't Find The Xdialog
May 8, 2010
I had Xdialog installed on a Jaunty machine. According to Synaptic, it comes from the section "Miscellaneous - Graphical (Universe)". I did a fresh installation of Lucid 10.04. But, Synaptic doesn't find Xdialog. I tried downloading the RPM build from the website, but alien seems unable to correctly convert it. I know that we're "supposed" to use zenity, but zenity doesn't have some of the features that I need.

I have a HP laptop, and recently I configured the Remote Control to control the sound, and make a funny joke when a curious friend press the Power button in the remote control. To make this work, I want to make a shell script that calls a dialog, not a console dialog, but a GTK dialog. Then I tried to install the package "xdialog", that is no longer present on the official repositories, and I tried to find a similar package, but no success. What comes closest is "dialog", but this shows only a console dialog.

What happened to KPDF?I have a nifty installation of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS / Gnome 2.30.2 running under VirtualBox. Everything is going quite well.BUT, in Synaptic I can't seem to locate the PDF reader KPDF? I have all the default repositories working and have plenty of other programs. Is KPDF still available in Ubuntu 10.04 / Gnome 2.30.2? Or has KPDF been superseded, or renamed, or...?

I downloaded a Perl script from off a page on the Internet, and tried to run it. It displayed its source in the web browser. First of all, I am in the cg-bin containing my cgi file and the file permissions are set to 755. I open the Terminal in this folder and run ls, which lists my file called hello.cgi; I run hello.cgi, and get a not found error, and run ./hello.cgi and get source code less comments:
Code:
me@fast:~/Files/Website/perl-dropdown/cgi-bin$ ls
hello.cgi redir.cgi
me@fast:~/Files/Website/perl-dropdown/cgi-bin$ hello.cgi
[code]....
Next I open my Synaptic and search for perl, so I can reinstall it. I find nothing. I navigate to /usr/bin and eventually find perl and perl5.xx as well.

I'm trying to set up a dual boot of Ubuntu & Windows XP.I have two hard disks installed - sda is 80GB and has an existing Windows setup on it, sdb is my 160GB data storage disk. When I have installed Ubuntu on other machines, it has detected any exisiting OS's and offered to install Ubuntu alongside them.
However, this time Windows doesn't seem to be detected - it says 'no other operating systems found' and wants to install to my second (i.e. sdb) disk. I was intending for Ubuntu & Windows to sit side-by-side on the first hard disk.Although I've installed Ubuntu before, I'm a bit of a novice and I'm not sure how to achieve this - where am I going wrong?

I just upgraded my computer to Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid. Whenever I open Synaptic Package Manager it opens normally. If I type into the "Quick search" box, when I try to type in a word as soon as I type the second letter Synaptic immediately closes. However, if I click on the full "Search" button, this function works as it should. I just can't use Quick Search. Synaptic closes every time.
I uninstalled synaptic from a terminal by typing [CODE] apt-get remove synaptic. Then I reinstalled using [CODE] apt-get install synaptic. Reinstalling did not fix the problem. Does anyone have an idea how to fix this?

When I try to install 10.4 on my hard drive, I get all the way to the "Prepare Partitions" menu and there are no disks listed and all button are grayed out. I am installing on an EVGA X58 motherboard with Intel ICH10 and I have AHCI enabled. Does Ubuntu support AHCI? Do I need drivers to install?

I have a box which is used by other people, although I have the only admin privileges.
In the users part of the system, an installation has appeared.
I didn't install it, and it seems to be some sort of windoze malware.
How do I get rid of this totally?
A simple 1,2,3..
The name of the App is AdvancedCleaner Free. It is running in WINE.
Since I certainly didn't install either of these....
I checked synaptic for wine, but it doesn't show as installed.

I just got an 8 Gb Sandisk Sansa mp3 player and i can't seem to find any drivers from the Synaptic package manager. I did searches on mp3, mp3 player, Sansa and Sandisk and could seem to find anything that looked like what I need. I was able to find a driver for it on my fedora 12 laptop by searching on "Sansa" but am stuck on my Ubuntu Desktop.

On Ubuntu 10.04, Synaptic indicates that current version {10.0.32.18-1(now) for AdobeFlash plugin} is latest but websites appear to indicate that latest version is 10.0.45-1. Synaptic Upgrade button is grayed and I am stuck! All came about by accessing following site: [URL]... Had to revert to Firefox on XP (!) to see diagram. Is there a more current (latest) version for Firefox under Ubuntu 10.04 and if so, how do I go about installing it? I tried to download and got a "Status: Error: Conflicts with installed package 'flashplugin installer'" when I clicked on the .deb file.

This happened completely randomly. One day, my synaptic and update manager is working fine and the next day, I open one of them and get a error window that doesn't say anything (no details on the error). So, i tried the terminal, sudo apt-get update, and this message shows:

E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_karmic_main_binary-i386_Packages

I am creating an script with Xdialog. The checklist option is confusing me a litte. Can someone tell me how to save the checklist states so they can be used in a script? As an example:
Code:
Xdialog --checklist "Choose toppings:" 10 40 3
1 Cheese on
2 "Tomato Sauce" on
3 Anchovies off
I would then like to put these values through if/else statements to perform different things with respect to the user selection.

Well, I was just doing an update, and there was an update for git that was held back. I decided to force this update using 'sudo apt-get dist-upgrade', and installation of git then failed. At this point in Synaptic - I could see versions listed as 'lucid', 'lucid-security', and then this ppa version. Then I barely managed to remove git - but now, if I try to install it again, *only* the ppa version is listed in Synaptic - no more 'lucid' and 'lucid-security' versions!!! Does anyone have an idea how I could recover the 'lucid', 'lucid-security' versions? I will try to salvage as much of the terminal with the problems as I can below...
Code:
/var/lib/dpkg/tmp.ci/preinst: 12: dpkg-maintscript-helper: not found
dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/git_1%3a1.7.4.1-3~ppa1~lucid2_i386.deb (--unpack):

Took an emachines T3265 with Win XP home and used 9.04 DVD (from Ubuntu book) to wipe out the Win XP and then install 9,04 over the entire hard drive. I then upgraded to 9.10 using the option on update manager. I gave my normal logon all privileges, but I can use synaptic and other functions such as changing update parameters w/o logging on as root. If attempt same from my logon, PC crashes.
