Ubuntu Installation :: Stuff Installed In Synaptic
Jul 2, 2011
I'm getting ready to back up all my data and reinstall Ubuntu from scratch, to clear up some various issues. It sure would be helpful if I could see a quick list in Synaptic or the Ubuntu Software Center of all the things I've installed myself. That would help with this whole process.

I recently had to install Python 2.7 to run some specific cripts and so tried to uninstall Python 2.6 so that I didn't have to worry about path conflicts. It seems that when uninstalling the Python package it's stripped most of the apps from my installation, including fairly essential stuff like the terminal. It also seemed to stop accepting my password as a root user, though I'm hoping a reboot may fix that.
Can anyone provide a listing of the default packages that Ubuntu ships with please so I can try to repair my system? I tried looking through ones I might know but it appears for example that while Bash is installed I have no Terminal entry under Applications.

I tried to install gstreamer through Rhythmbox but only got a "Fix broken packages first" error message. I tried to fix the broken packages in the Synaptic Package Manager but it said there were none to be fixed. I tried to install the gstreamer stuff from Synaptic Package Manager and got this message
Quote:
gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg:
Depends: libavcodec52 (>=3:0.svn20090303-1) but it is not installable or
libavcodec-extra-52 but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libavformat52 (>=3:0.svn20090303-1) but it is not installable or
libavformat-extra-52 but it is not going to be installed
I then tried to install libavformat-extra-52 and got this message
Quote:
libavcodec-extra-52: Depends: libgsm1 (>=1.0.13) but it is not installable Depends: libschroedinger-1.0-0 (>=1.0.0) but it is not installable I couldn't find either of the packages contained in the last message.

Interested in trialing Varkon and used Synaptic Package Manager to download and install. According to the [url]...nstalling.html it should be there under 'Applications'. I've looked through them all and no sign of Varkon. I've also tried to see if Varkon was installed so I looked via Ubuntu Software Center under installed software. No sign. Did a file search for Varkon.

Packages installed with synaptic are usually well installed on your system (i.e. bin in /usr/bin/, etc.). However, when a software is not in the repo, I always wonder where I should install it, when everything comes together (i.e. /bin, /var, /man are all subfolders of the main folder of the software). For now, I've opted for /var/opt/ or /usr/share, but I'm not really sure this is a best practice... is there any guidelines on that?

I'm running opensuse 11.2 with KDE. Today I got a software update notification saying that there was some gnome related packages that needed updating. I just pressed update without thinking about it too much. Then I realized that I'm not using any gnome programs so why do I need gnome-packages? Is there a way to tell if those packages are indeed unnecessary or not. And if so, how do I remove them all safely? I don't like having gnome stuff on my computer if I can avoid it.

I was trying to install a new hard drive and in the process have managed to not only format my old hard drive but lost all my stuff as well. I am running a live CD but unable to mount the said hard drive. I Know its there.
fdisk tells me:
As you can see its still registering as /dev/sda, I am unable to mount this to run a undelete program on it.
a e2fsck tells me
The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2 filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2 filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock: e2fsck -b 8193 <device>

I recently installed a few packages from source using checkinstall (notably x264). Today, when my normal synaptic/apt-get upgrade ran, it wanted to to overwrite the (newer) version I installed with the (older) version in the repos. Is there any way to have synaptic/apt ignore packages installed via checkinstall so that they aren't overwritten?

I have a box which is used by other people, although I have the only admin privileges.
In the users part of the system, an installation has appeared.
I didn't install it, and it seems to be some sort of windoze malware.
How do I get rid of this totally?
A simple 1,2,3..
The name of the App is AdvancedCleaner Free. It is running in WINE.
Since I certainly didn't install either of these....
I checked synaptic for wine, but it doesn't show as installed.

Can I keep the old 32bit_testing /home with all the hidden directories there when moving to 64bit_testing?
Is there a way to export a list of all installed packages in aptitude or synaptic, so that when reinstalling, it can be easily imported? (reinstalling the same system)

Reading the list of updates in my UNR 9.10 install I was quite surprised to see a few new installs in the list:
Distribution updates
alien
bsd-mailx
build-essential
debhelper
dpkg-dev
[Code]...
This looks wrong to me, what could cause it to push loads of dev/build tools and the redhat package manager on me? Edit: Unticking these also unticks a "google-chrome-beta" update below. Does this mean they are now dependencies of that package?

I recently upgraded to 10.04 from 9.10 and have some questions:
1. Will a clean install of 10.04 perform better than my upgrade?
2. Will it get rid of the message I get at boot time about IRQ #18 being disabled.
3. The boot splash image does not appear after the upgrade. Will it appear after a clean install? (It does when booting from 10.04 live CD).
4. And finally: I can see that there are some 20 or so folders including home when I do ls /
Code:
mike@mike-laptop:~$ ls /
bin dev initrd.img lost+found opt sbin sys var
boot etc initrd.img.old media proc selinux tmp vmlinuz
cdrom home lib mnt root srv usr vmlinuz.old
How may I preserve stuff I have on my upgraded system such as:- VirtualBox running a Windows XP guest, its application and data. - Wireless LAN implemented using ndisuio? wrapper Canon PIXMA IP2600 driver

Pretty much self explanatory:This morning I went into the update manager, and found a bunch of RPM package-management stuff such as rpm, alien, compiling tools, etc. What is up with this?I suspect they are setting the scenery for some big press release saying they now support RPM packages in Ubuntu too. Any ideas? (or better, inside info from someone who knows)

Well, I was just doing an update, and there was an update for git that was held back. I decided to force this update using 'sudo apt-get dist-upgrade', and installation of git then failed. At this point in Synaptic - I could see versions listed as 'lucid', 'lucid-security', and then this ppa version. Then I barely managed to remove git - but now, if I try to install it again, *only* the ppa version is listed in Synaptic - no more 'lucid' and 'lucid-security' versions!!! Does anyone have an idea how I could recover the 'lucid', 'lucid-security' versions? I will try to salvage as much of the terminal with the problems as I can below...
Code:
/var/lib/dpkg/tmp.ci/preinst: 12: dpkg-maintscript-helper: not found
dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/git_1%3a1.7.4.1-3~ppa1~lucid2_i386.deb (--unpack):
[code]....

does the distro include any optional/unnecessary stuff that can be whacked to conserve disk space? I'm running a nearly default installation with no added applications (yet) and wondered if it is possible to reduce the 2+GB install a bit.
