Ubuntu Installation :: Strange Things Going On With Wine And Gnome?

Feb 23, 2010

Did a fresh install last night of 9.10 and everything seemed fine, even fglrx worked fine (!) and didn't screw things up. However, when I came to use Winamp through Wine I couldn't read the script as it had been replaced by symbols thus effectively scrambling the text. Deleted, and downloaded again, same result. Then went to check that Wine itself was OK. Discovered that Wine too was unintelligible as the text there consisted of symbols. Now to Gnome. Great after the fresh install, but since I ran the Update Manager it's gone screwy in terms of the themes used, that's right, plural, as I seem mostly to have Human for the Desktop, but Clearlook for the file browser and folder icons on the Desktop, which wasn't the case before the update. Can anyone explain these very strange phenomena before I suspect my PC of being supernaturally affected?

General :: Use WINE And Tinstall Things On The C?

Mar 31, 2011

I installed it a while ago but haven't bothered to use it much, and before I installed Kubuntu and had Ubuntu, it worked fine, I could use Notepad and browse the C:... But, now when I go to "Browse C:" it says "Unable to run the command specified. The file or folder file:///home/theif519/Documents/.wine/dosdevices/c: does not exist." What do I do? I tried reinstalling Wine but that didn't do any good. Do I manually make the directory?

General :: WINE GNOME Menus Won't Show Up After Re-install Of WINE?

Dec 18, 2009

Lot of questions about WINE... When I'm done I'm going to make a HOWTO so that others can do what I did It's hard work, but I'm nearly done. The last problem I'm having is the WINE menu on GNOME won't show up after a install of WINE from a .deb package (it usually does). This was after I compiled WINE from source and removed it with "make uninstall" and "rm -rf /.wine".So now I installed the WINE from a deb package and the Wine menu entry is not showing up.I've tried re-installing Wine and rebooting my PC but nothing seems to work.

Programming :: Name Of Formula N Things Out Of Collection Of M Things

I'm working through some problems in a beginners programming book. The author mentions a formula for calculating the number of ways of picking out n things from a collection of m of them:

Code:

| | = -----------
n / n! (m-n)!
But he does not give a name for the formula. Does anyone happen to know what it is called? I need to do some related research.

Ubuntu Installation :: Update Manager Is Deleting Important Things?

Aug 17, 2010

I grabbed Adobe AIR today, but it did not have 64-bit packages, or source. It claimed that you could install getlib(?), then force it to install with dpkg --force-arcitecture. I did so, and it runs fine.

Now, the Update Manager says that it cannot do a full upgrade. When I allow it to do a partial upgrade, it attempts to delete com.destroytoday.destroytwitter (the app I need AIR for.) Bottom line: Can I stop the Update Manager from removing this package? I can provide screenshots or logfiles on request.

I have ubuntu on my desktop - works great. The problem is I am trying to install it on my laptop. I have the image burned, and it's booting off my cd rom just fine. The problem comes after that. It goes to the ubuntu loading screen for a pretty long time, then after that the screen scrambles in random black and white box type things, at which point I get no response unless I hit the power button at which point a linux screen pops up and tells me it's waiting for programs to close, then boots down.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Upgrade Gives Strange Mouse Pointer And Windows

Sep 10, 2010

I just upgraded my 9.10 on my laptop to 10.04. I seems to have gone well except for one annoying problem. when I boot up I get a large X for the mouse pointer instead of the normal arrow. When I start an application it will not go to full screen and there are no close/minimise/maximise options. Nor can I get to the top or bottom menu bars.

I can cure this on a temporary basis by right-clicking on the desktop and changing the visual effects from none to normal. The problem is that it does not stick. Each time I boot up I have to make this change.

Ubuntu Installation :: Strange Line Of Text Appeared On Open Gedit Page On First Use After Upgrade From 10.04 T0 10.10

Jun 11, 2011

Strange line of text appeared on open gedit page on first use after upgrade from 10.04 t0 10.10. I was reading something and copypasting the odd bit onto a gedit note: left the room, returned to find blank page except for "nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn". Then I saw that it was just the tail-end of a longer line which had stretched the page width to max, and by deleting backwards I arrived beneath my intact notes. The line was "I[my bolding]nnnnnnnnnn...nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnby v9898". I googled v9898. And there's a v9898. com. It provides something for Windows systems.

Ubuntu :: Install WINE Screensaver In Gnome-screensaver Possible?

May 19, 2010

There's an OSS screensaver on windows that I love called PixelCity (links:blog post, github). it's pretty cool. and it runs fine on my Ubuntu (Karmic 9.10) with wine.Is there a way I can tell the gnome-screensaver about it so I can use it as one of my screensavers? I'm still fairly new to Gnome and the whole "screensavers as themes" thing is still confusing me.I've found my themesdir and tried to create a .desktop file for it, but obviously I've gotten something wrong as it just doesn't show when I open the screensaver prefs dialog, no error, no message, it's just not there.

Installing the xscreensaver packages added the extra screensavers I was missing, and I'm a pixelcity away from perfection..Of course the perfect solution would be if someone ported the screensaver natively to linux, which shouldn't be too hard as the source is open, it already runs on openGL and tries to confine most windows stuff to a single file. But I don't know C++ or 3D code or win/linux internals so I wouldn't know where to start..

When booting into GNOME, the desktop image flashes on the screen and the second the bars on top and bottom try to appear the system boots out of the desktop and returns to the log on screen. I assume this is a crash of Xserver, but just guessing. Per another page I ran: lspci | grep VGAand returned:
