Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Update Other Things Like JDK Because Of The Dependancies?
Feb 25, 2010
Alright maybe I posted my problem in the wrong forum, but I need to fix this because I can't update other things like JDK because of the dependancies.[URL].. That's my original post.
Should I just uninstall FF and then run the update? If I remove FF, will I lose favorites ect?
I grabbed Adobe AIR today, but it did not have 64-bit packages, or source. It claimed that you could install getlib(?), then force it to install with dpkg --force-arcitecture. I did so, and it runs fine.
Now, the Update Manager says that it cannot do a full upgrade. When I allow it to do a partial upgrade, it attempts to delete com.destroytoday.destroytwitter (the app I need AIR for.) Bottom line: Can I stop the Update Manager from removing this package? I can provide screenshots or logfiles on request.
I've searched around a bit for the answer to this question and most threads just got the response "Why the heck would you do that!?" so, to clear things up... I have installed VisualBoyAdvanceM via a forced architecture dpkg install to fix a bug vanilla VBA had (I am running 64-bit), and I made a link from where visualboyadvance's executable would usually be to this install, so it's acts the same way as the original program. But when I go to install VBAExpress to get GUI, it want's to install the vanilla VBA overtop of my already-working VBAM.
I'm trying to get a Canon ip4850 printer installed on a fairly new upgrade to 64-bit Narhwal. I want to install the cnijfilter-common_3.40-1_amd64.deb and cnijfilter-ip4800series_3.40-1_amd64.deb packages, (;atest Canon drivers) but get the following error:
dpkg: error processing /home/name/cnijfilter-ip4800series-3.40-1-deb/packages/cnijfilter-common_3.40-1_amd64.deb (--install): cnijfilter-common: 3.40-1 (Multi-Arch: no) is not co-installable with cnijfilter-common:i386 3.20-1 (Multi-Arch: no) which is currently installed
How do I remove the old i386 3.20-1 arch? I've tried sudo apt-get remove, and this is the result.
name@name:~$ sudo apt-get remove cnijfilter-common [sudo] password for name: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree [code].....
I'm working through some problems in a beginners programming book. The author mentions a formula for calculating the number of ways of picking out n things from a collection of m of them:
Code: / m m! | | = ----------- n / n! (m-n)! But he does not give a name for the formula. Does anyone happen to know what it is called? I need to do some related research.
I have recently installed 11.3 onto a computer I just dropped a new mobo/cpu/memory into. At first everything worked great! (minus a few video streaming issues...but that is for a later date) Then, a few days ago, I let it do an update. Boy to I feel stupid now. I guess if it ain't broke..... So, now I don't have sound in the browsers or for the video players...such as xine. I do however still have sound with Amarok and system sounds when it boots up.
I have deleted the sound device in Yast and let it re-install several times. I tried different setting there as well. Checked and rechecked then checked again the mixer settings. Made sure my group settings included audio...just in case. Now Amarok and the online video play at warp speed, and only Amarok gives me sound....garbled...but sound. The system keeps telling me when I reboot that "one or more sound devices were removed" and wants to know if I want it to ignore them from now on. I've answered yes and no several times.I've also tried updated the alsa drivers in the software management of Yast. Can someone please help me before my wife gets mad at me for converting this computer to Linux?
Here is some information.

The "Warp Speed" for the video and audio was resolved after removing and then re-installing the audio driver and a quick reboot. But for some reason I had to reboot yet again to get the internet connection working again. This has happened to me a couple of times now. Also, when I try to adjust the Pulseaudio config under "other"in the audio config of Yast,it says it is not installed. When I try to install, it has a conflict with another program.
find out what packages from Yum will satisfy these two dependencies? I have search and can't seem to find them. I know there are integrated or slipped into some larger package because when I do a fresh install and customize my packageelection to include 'everything', it then installs this RPM with out any issues.
I am trying to install freemind without it downloading and installing openjdk as a dependency as it makes freemind run very, very slow. I have already installed sun-java-jre as a substitue but debian still wants to install openjdk.Any ideas how I can stop this? Also, should I assume that sun-java-jre is not installed properly as debian thinks the dependency is not met? I installed sun-java-jre with the auto bin file downloaded from the sun site. It is installed in /usr/java, is this right?I love debian! It's much faster and more robust then Ubuntu, even with squeeze testing (current version). Just a bit of a shock have to do some basic config myself.
So it seems to me like upgrading to the newest 11.04 distro of ubuntu would be a great thing to do, but I've seen quite a few threads about bugs, problems, etc. Is this common? I am new to linux so I am not really sure how things usually work. Does it differ from system to system?
Did a fresh install last night of 9.10 and everything seemed fine, even fglrx worked fine (!) and didn't screw things up. However, when I came to use Winamp through Wine I couldn't read the script as it had been replaced by symbols thus effectively scrambling the text. Deleted, and downloaded again, same result. Then went to check that Wine itself was OK. Discovered that Wine too was unintelligible as the text there consisted of symbols. Now to Gnome. Great after the fresh install, but since I ran the Update Manager it's gone screwy in terms of the themes used, that's right, plural, as I seem mostly to have Human for the Desktop, but Clearlook for the file browser and folder icons on the Desktop, which wasn't the case before the update. Can anyone explain these very strange phenomena before I suspect my PC of being supernaturally affected?
how to get completely rid of everything purple in Lucid? The boot screenThe login screenThe default terminal backgroundThe "Click here to hide all windows and show the desktop" buttonAnything else that you can think of that's purple.etc. etc. etc. Please include a global fix for the WM button fiasco so that I don't have to modified the individual account of newly created users.P.S. Message to Canonical: I love Ubuntu, but purple themes are for teenage girls.P.P.S. Does anyone else find it humorous that the "new" default purple background file is named "warty-final-ubuntu.png"?
i updated to Sid and installed gnome minimal (gnome-core). But, there are 2-3 days ago, Totem and Evolution became gnome-core's dependancies. Actually on Sid, i use VLC and Icedove and when i want to uninstall Totem and Evolution, "aptitude" wants to remove gnome-core too. I would like to know if it's possible to remove these applications without uninstall gnome-core completly?
I'm at the point where I don't know how to assign certain things for the partitions. When I was on windows I took out 25gbs out of my primary hard drive for Fedora. I also have a 200mb partition. I know I need to put the 200mb partition as the /boot but what do I put as the 25 gb one? I'm using the create custom layout.
I have ubuntu on my desktop - works great. The problem is I am trying to install it on my laptop. I have the image burned, and it's booting off my cd rom just fine. The problem comes after that. It goes to the ubuntu loading screen for a pretty long time, then after that the screen scrambles in random black and white box type things, at which point I get no response unless I hit the power button at which point a linux screen pops up and tells me it's waiting for programs to close, then boots down.
I am trying to update using Update Manager and I get this message: Failed to fetch "Failed to fetch [URL]..404 Not Found" My system is 64 days out of date now.
I have looked elsewhere for an answer and some others have had similar problems, but I have not found a reason for it happening, nor an answer. I wonder if anyone can help me please. I have been using Ubuntu for several months, can use the Terminal if I have the right commands to issue, but beyond that have limited knowledge of the system.
having had problems with getting grub2 to work on dual HDD setup...despite the most excellent advice on the forum i took the plunge and installed 10.10 from update manager within 10.04..... bingo fixed grub and now have dual boot again. but the update manager and synaptic package don't work because of libedata-cal1.2-6 file that remains..following other advice on the forum Advice gratefully received, how can i force an unistall of this package
mark@studypc:~$ sudo apt-get -f remove Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done
I started the upgrade to 10.4 from 9.10 through the update manager. It started the update to 10.4. After downloading almost 95% of the update, it gave an error message of "could not download certain components. downloaded files will not be erased" and stopped the update. I restarted the PC, and started the update manager again. But now it does not show any option of update to 10.4. how do I continue or resume the update process? I just started using ubuntu about 15 days back. So, I am relatively new to this.
I just installed ubuntu 10.10, and im triying to update, when i uncheck the packages that i dont want and click on the "install updates" button in the update manager, the update manager check it again and download the packages that i dont want
I have Ubuntu Karmic 64-bit installed. Update manager tells me there are updates available, but when i try to install them, downloading the updates fail and throws this error:
Code:
Failed to fetch http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/e/eglibc/libc6-i386_2.10.1-0ubuntu16_amd64.deb
Consequently, a similar error occurs when I try installing Sun Java 6 Runtime.
Code:
Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/multiverse/s/sun-java6/sun-java6-jre_6-15-1_all.deb Connection failed [IP: 91.189.88.31 80]
Ubuntu Restricted Extras stalls when it's time to download the Java package I tried synaptic, update manager, aptitude, apt-get, and they all throw similar errors. Then I also tried connecting to different servers, to no avail. So to check if it's my connection to the net that has problems somehow, I tried downloading the file directly through my web browser, and it works. (But it's not recommended, and it won't let me!, install the updates manually, right?) I tried searching for the errors on the net and in the forums, and they're all somehow related to proxy servers. I then checked if I'm using some inappropriate proxy settings, and everywhere it's all set up to connect to the net directly, which is, well, my setup.
Take note though, that I am able to install other softwares normally, i.e, using synaptic, apt-get etc. The ones I tried include Pidgin and Mplayer. It's just these updates and Java:
Code:
jeanne@jeanne-desktop:~$ sudo sudo aptitude upgrade W: The "upgrade" command is deprecated; use "safe-upgrade" instead. Reading package lists... Done
I am using ubuntu 9.10.While running a partial update through System->adminstration->update-manager. I am facing error as 'Error Authenticating some packages". Please find the attached, screenshot of the error and sources.list file output.
I'm having trouble updating. Using the update manager fails and I see the message:dpkg: parse error, in file '/var/lib/dpkg/available' near line 23288 package libbonoboui2-common': 'Conflicts' field, reference to 'libbonobous2-0': version contains ' '
every time i try to update my computer i get this message administrator@desktop:~$ sudo aptitude upgrade W: The "upgrade" command is deprecated; use "safe-upgrade" instead. Reading package lists.Done Building dependency tree Reading state information. Done Reading extended state information Initializing package states.. No packages will be installed, upgraded, or removed. 0 packages upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. Need to get 0B of archives. After unpacking 0B will be used.
I've run the command "sudo apt-get update" from terminal, showing no update to do.Then I've run the update manager (System-Administration-Update Manager) and it has shown an update (adobe flash).I thought that "apt-get update" command and update manager were the same... Why do I have different results ? Is something missing in my "sources.list" file ?
Normally Update Manager always finds the update to the next version of Ubuntu. It still hasn't given me any notion whatoever. I allready changed the settings from regular to LTS, but nothing changes. There are updates to the kernel, but I cannot download them, so I'm kinda stuck here.
I upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04 on my Toshiba 32-bit laptop without any problems.Since the upgrade I am starting to have troubles on this machine. Most others are 64-bit and bar an Evolution issue are fine.In this case, 24 hours after the upgrade the machine wanted to do an Update. It would not allow the update until I fixed some broken packages which I did via Synaptics Package Manager. I then Marked All Upgrades and did the update from there. It was fine until I shut down and tried to log in again.I got the Blue Screen of Death!!!!!! I thought only Windows had this!Anyway, I could not log in. The auto login was not working so I used Other which gave me Recovery, entered my UN and PW, and I got the error message:
HTML Code:
Could not update ICEauthority file
I have searched the forum and some other sites, but none of the ideas can I get to work. I can start the machine using a 9.10 CD in the trial mode, but can not download the files suggested or delete the ICEauthority file, etc...
I upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04 and when i try to check for updates in the update manager it says:
W:Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/and471/kaza...source/Sources 404 Not Found , W:Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/and471/kaza...amd64/Packages 404 Not Found
Using 11.04. After an update by Update Manager, everything seems fine. but after I rebooted it fails to reach the log in screen. It shows Ubuntu is booting up, after that, it seems it has crash, though I managed to boot it up and go into my desktop in low graphics mode.As I'm new to Ubuntu,
