Ubuntu Installation :: Printer USB Cable Port Not Found On 10.04
May 22, 2010
I have upgraded from 9.04 to 10.04. 9.04 found my usb connected printer ( LaserJet 6MP) with no problems. But 10.04 will not find the usb port to which my printer is connected. I have searched for a solution on the forum, and others seem to have a similar problem, but not recognized it. For some it seemed to have self corrected, but I am having no such luck. I have downloaded hplip from [URL]
Following their instructions, I have run "hp-setup" in Terminal. This gives the following output:
Code:
cs@cs-desktop:~$ hp-setup
HP Linux Imaging and Printing System (ver. 3.10.5)
Printer/Fax Setup Utility ver. 9.0

Searching... (bus=usb, search=(None), desc=0)
error: No devices found on bus: usb
After disconnecting and reconnecting the printer cable, I used the command "dmseg| tail"
Terminal output:
Code:
s@cs-desktop:~$ dmesg | tail
[263.646972] Buffer I/O error on device fd0, logical block 0
[301.759023] end_request: I/O error, dev fd0, sector 0
[301.759033] Buffer I/O error on device fd0, logical block 0
[339.871189] end_request: I/O error, dev fd0, sector 0
[339.871199] Buffer I/O error on device fd0, logical block 0
[349.600055] usb 2-1: USB disconnect, address 2
[349.600258] usblp0: removed
[361.712024] usb 2-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 3

[ 361.884062] usblp0: USB Bidirectional printer dev 3 if 0 alt 1 proto 2 vid 0x050D pid 0x0002
I interpret this to mean that the printer is seen from this command. Yet when I do the "lsusb" command, I get this output:
Code:
s@cs-desktop:~$ lsusb
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 050d:0002 Belkin Components
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
This to me indicates that the printer is not seen by the "lsusb" command.
I would like to get my printer printing. I am trying to get hold of an older parallel Centronics printer cable with a DB25 at the other end to see if I can get the printer working with it. Have others done this with success?

I just installed a Brothers HL2170W printer on my desktop which is running Ubuntu 1004 I had no problem with the install and it is working. The problem is when I send a page to print it takes 5 minutes before it prints. if this is normal or if there is a fix. I have the printer connected with a USB cable.

So first off, it probably seems this question has been asked thousands of times before. but I did do a search, mostly archived posts that ended up being something other than a true ip blocking of the port. [URL]..
So my port 80 is truly blocked. Ive tried setting up the port forwarding on my router, Ive tried manually allowing all traffic on port 80 through ip tables. Ive even dabbled with setting up something like openDNS to see So far nothing, Im only available on my local network.
There has to be some way to do a redirect though. even something as simple as an htaccess file redirecting [URL].. xxxx (the space is there to avoid my url being interrupted by a smiley

A netmap scan of my WAN IP address (cable modem) shows;
23/tcp open telnet?
8080/tcp open tcpwrapped
I've called Linksys and Netgear and they have said there is no user adjustable configuration allowed for the Cable Modems.
How am I supposed to close the open ports if the manufacturer doesn't allow access ?

My question regards available hardware... an adapter taking a USB plug_ at end of a mic cable_ which adapter would then connect to the computer's standard audio/mic input.
Anybody seen such an adapter ? After looking an hour or so this morning on USB gadget sites, I found lots of the audio-mic-plug-TO-usb adapters, but this again is the opposite of what I need.
The problem Im having is with older versions of a sound app I use (audacity)_ newer versions of this specifically support USB mics_ but_ that feature is missing in older versions.
Assuming audacity will treat any legal connection via audio port as "mic"

I've bought a HP Photosmart printer, HP Photosmart wireless e-All-in-One printer - B110a and i've got a problem installing it properly. I'm using Debian 6.0 Squeeze. When i connect the printer, Debian doesn't recognize my printer as the Photosmart B109 printer for unknown reason. When i go to the site of HP and search for a driver, it directs me to this site:I've downloaded that latest hplip file as a .run file and installed it. My printer is recognized proparly, but when i try to print a colored image, it comes out black/white. Something is not crrect. Does anyone recognize this problem with this type HP printer?

what shell command I should look into that will "mount" a printer that is present in lsusb output, but not present in /dev/usb/? I have a working printer connected with a Parallel to USB printer cable, but after I reboot the machine the printer is not "mounted" (for lack of the correct term?) at /dev/usb/lp0 until I unplug the USB cable and plug it back in lsusb sees it always though.

I am trying to get two way serial communications going between a Windows XP system and a Linux system (RHEL 5).I have /sbin/agetty -L 9600 ttyS0
in /etc/inittab. I am using a generic USB to serial adaptor on Windows (Unitek) and a null modem cable. I have putty configured for 9600 baud, 8 bits, no parity, one stop bit, no flow control.I get the login prompt from agetty in the putty window but input does not work; I see weird characters in the putty screen. I can echo output into the device from windows and see it, but
cat < /dev/ttyS0. just prints out weird characters from what I type.

how I could file share, or make the whole Hard Drive (HDD) accessible to another computer. The two other computers I have are a Toshiba Laptop with Ethernet and USB, and a iMac Intel with Firewire, USB, and Ethernet. Putting these to use along with:
Three Ethernet Cables
Two Printer Peripheral USB Cables
The Two Computers
A 2GB Flash Drive
That is all I can think of right now. I do not want to use CDs. In a way, I would like to do a network boot. So, how do I get the whole HDD visible to the others computers (either/both) and be able to write to it? I want to put Xubuntu on it, and earse the rest of the Hard Drive. The computers getting this are the iMac G3s and the eMac G4. The eMac has 256MB RAM, 40GB HDD, and a 700MHz processor. Two iMacs have 128MB RAM, 40GB HDD, and a 600MHz Processor. The other iMac is the same as the rest but has a 500MHz processor.

My new Shuttle runs Debian fine, but like most new systems, the old serial and parallel ports are long gone. I have no problems with the serial port - there is a Sourceforge driver to use with most PL-2303 type USB to Serial adapter cables. But, I am having trouble googling up the USB to Parallel connection. There are no lack of USB/Parallel cables, but all that I have found come with canned software for Windows and only for connecting a printer. I have several non-printer devices that connect via the P-Port that I access using a Perl driver from CPAN. Anybody know of an open source *nix driver for any particular USB/PP cable? Or had any experience in moving from the straight PP to a USB/PP connection to a non-printer device?

When I boot fc14 with an already defined printer connected on the parallel port, then I can use the printer. The printer appears on parallel:/dev/lp0. But, if the printer is not connected during startup, when I connect the printer I cannot use it. Nothing happens. I have no corresponding message using "dmesg" command when I connect the printer.
I cannot make cups see that the printer is connected, using "localhost:631" in firefox. Is it possible to "mount" the printer manually? Using "system-config-printer", the printer has to be "activated", even though it is not used or even connected. Then "parport" module is installed during boot (with other related modules: "ppdev" and "parport_pc").
Then, when the printer is connected, "dmesg" shows :
lp0: using parport0 (interrupt-driven).
lp0: console ready
And, of course, it is now OK to use the printer.

I currently cannot get my printer to work (nothing ever get's printed) even though CUPS seems to be correctly configured and reports all jobs as "completed" without any errors. As I know that my printer works (I can print from my laptop on it) I currenty suspect my new PC's parallel port to maybe have a hardware issue. My question is now is there any way to check the parallel port?
Here are some details:
from dmesg:
lp0: using parport0 (interrupt-driven).
from lsmod:
parport 27954 3 ppdev,lp,parport_pc
In the BIOS the mode is set to EPP. So as far I can see (I am not really an expert) the kernel-modules are there, /dev/lp0 exists and has the proper permissions.
Yet doing 'echo -en "
Hello
f" >/dev/lp0' does not produce any Putout on my printer that is connected via the parallel port.

I have recently installed Fedora 13 on my netbook. I wish to use my HP Officejet via the HPLIP utility. The problem with this is that when I have the firewall turned on, the printer is not recognised at all during setup. When the firewall is switched off, the printer is recognised. The printer in question is an HP Officejet 8500a which is connected via Ethernet cable to a wireless router. I would like to know if there are any network ports (that's used by HPLIP) that I could 'turn on' in the firewall that could let my computer recognise the printer.

LaserJet Pro CP1525NW. HP website mentions that it is compatible with Linux. However, this particular model cannot be found at Linux Foundation's OpenPrinting Database. As you can see here, there is no mention of HP LaserJet Pro CP1525N which makes me worried. Also, the printer is not listed in HP Linux imaging and printing.
What are your thoughts and do you have experience with this printer? What other Color Laser printer do you recommend? The fact that the that printer's specification on HP website says that it is compatible with Linux, yet it is not listed on HPLIP nor in Openprinting makes me nervious.

I have an Epson Artisan 835 network printer hooked up to my desktop. I am running a wubi install of 10.10 and cannot get it to find the printer. I previously had an artisan 830 and it worked fine, however, this new printer is not recognized in the add printer application. So far I have install LSB 3.2, and then installed the rpm package for the artisan 835 using alien -i. Now I am at a loss for what to do.

I'm setting up a netbook for somebody (in another country!) and one of the last hurdles is the printer setup. I only have the netbook and not the printer with me. I know that the printer is a HP PSC 1215 All-In-One Printer but there seems to be a Catch-22 that I need to have the printer connected in order to be able to set this up using the GUI tools. How do I work around this? As a minimum I just want to enable printing, although scanning would be a bonus.

I have recently installed Fedora 13 dual booted with windows 7. Everything on both OS's works fine with the exception of Linux printing. I am using a Netgear WGPS606 print server. (it works fine on Windows 7). I have, from Linux pinged the server (192.168.1.200) and have gotten a response for each string sent but following the usual procedure [System-Administration-Printing then Add (a printer)- Expand Network Printer etc.] The response is that there is no printer found at that address. (the firewall was disabled).

Friend got a Brother HL-2130 Printer and couldn't add printer using Yast as the drivers are not found by Yast.
I went to Brother Solutions Center : Brother Driver for Linux Distributions and downloaded the drivers provided by Brother.
rpm -ivh *.rpm
and everything works well.
How could we prompt the developers to update openSUSE so that these working drivers can be added into Yast to benefit future users.

I am a ham radio operator and I want to use my computer to run "RTTY", "PSK31", and other digital modes. Therefore I have to be able to configure the serial port.
I only have the onboard port (ttyS0).
I can get info about the port by using "$ dmesg | grep tty"
Code: Select alldebian@melsdeb:~$ dmesg | grep tty
[ 0.000000] console [tty0] enabled
[ 1.533804] serial8250: ttyS0 at I/O 0x3f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A
[ 1.534337] 00:06: ttyS0 at I/O 0x3f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A
But when I try to use "setserial" by itself or with any parameters I get this...
Code: Select alldebian@melsdeb:~$ setserial -g /dev/ttyS0
bash: setserial: command not found
Even "man setserial" gives the same result.
I am using Debian 6

This probably way TOO much information. Sorry for the long post. I bought a Kodak 5300 printer/scanner a year and a half or so ago and then found that it would not work under ubuntu 9.04. So I packed it away. Now I find reports on several websites that it can be made to function properly with ubuntu 10-4 Lucid Lynx. I downloaded and installed the recommended driver - c2esp. [URL]...
Quote:
dave@dave:~$ dmesg | tail -n 14

I find references to the printer all over the place, but when I try to print something nothing happens. I tried the print routine in 'gimp', 'gedit', 'thunderbird, and 'firefox'. The printer as a stand alone will copy and scan. About a year and a half ago it was connected to a Windows machine and worked.
