I can't open Package Manager and install or remove anything...this is what it says:
"The error message was:'Error:Opening the cache(E:Encountered a section with no Package:header,Eroblem with MergeList/var/lib/apt/lists repository.akirad.net_dists_akirad-karmic_main_binary-i386_Packages,E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened)'This usually means that your installed packages have unmet depencies.
It started with Update Manager constantly recycling and not updating. When it starts it shows 295 files and 308MB waiting to download. When I click on 'Install Updates' it appears to go through the process, and then presents me with the same 'waiting to install' window again - and again, and again - in fact as many times as I care to click the 'Install Updates' button. No error messages appear. The 'Settings' button produces the same apparent process as the 'Install Updates' button, but doesn't present me with any other screen.
I've tried all the solutions I could find on these forums and nothing works. The sudo suggestions for Terminal usually produce error codes. adjusting a line in the 'hosts' file. When I tried this I was presented with the obstacle of not having access to the read-only file, and no matter how much I searched I couldn't find how to gain access . While investigating all these possible solutions, I was directed in turn to the Software Sources and Synaptic Package Manager applications, but when I attempted to start them, 'Starting Administrative Application' appeared briefly on the taskbar - and then disappeared!
After installing the 'getdeb' and 'playdeb' debian packages that automate adding those repositories for [URL] my synaptic package manager started acting up giving me this error: ould not download all repository indexes The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct. After, I have marked a package for removal, the "Apply" button is still shaded, i.e., I am not able to click the "Apply" button. The "Apply" button is still not functional even I am able to download and install packages.

I've had to sudo kill -9 dpkg and apt-get and delete the lock in /var/lib/dpkg/ which may have caused more problems... It seems like the problem started when I attempted to upgrade my version of Flash.
When I try to open SYNAPTIC PACKAGE MANAGER in my ubuntu 11.04 version, it is showing error. Following error is being displayed:

Worst combination ever.. To fix "no wubildr" I have to use synaptic package manager. To use synaptic package manager I have to access recovery mode, which the "no wubildr" problem is not allowing me to. Is there anything else, than reinstalling ubuntu, I can do?
EDIT: the terminal is not working either.. Segmentation fault:/etc/sudoers is mode 0666, should be 0440. That is why I am unable to use the synaptic package manager.
i have windows 7 on my laptop and I wanted to install Ubuntu but I had problems with the partitions so I installed Wubi. It looks just the same as ubuntu, but I tried to find some programs in the synaptic package manager (like Kile or aMsn) but the manager is not finding anything I search for.

Have a new Dell Vostro A90 that came with 8.04 and I have installed 9.10 from a CD that was mailed to me. I can connect to the internet with a wired connection, but I cannot connect wirelessly. When I've tried to install the broadcom driver by going to Synaptic Package Manager and hitting reload, I get a message that 1 of 15 packages is downloading, but nothing downloads and I get a failed message for each of the jobs. Any clues as to how to proceed from here? I am very new to Ubuntu.

After trying a `blind' sudo apt-get install acroread which was unsuccessful I tried installing using the synaptic package manager, and couldn't find it in there either.
According to the software sources info I have both Universe and Multiverse switched on. I'm fairly sure one of my attempted permutations of `acro', `reader' and `acrobat' etc should have hit upon something so I assume there must be something more fundamental wrong!

I have been trying to install an electronic medical records package (openemr) using package manager on Ubuntu 10.10. The installation requires that I give answers to certain questions. In 9.10 and 10.04, one could follow the installation and interact, if necessary, by opening a terminal within package manager. This option seems not to be available in 10.10. Have I missed something?

Since september, i hooked up an old Acer laptop (with just 560 RAM and a 16 mib graphical card) to a computer screen, a keyboard and a mouse, so that i had an extra 'computer' for my mother to use. Old people prefer bigger screens to ponder upon.
But anyways, each time i want to update or upgrade the 9.04 Ubuntu distribution, it freezes. This is quite annoying since i really want it to upgrade to 9.10, for possible faster results.
Ubuntu 10.04, update manager: the package "libmyth-perl" shows up, but is greyed. I have purged all myth-tv (assuming this package belongs there) from my system, but I am unable to remove this package from the update manager.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have the package "xvidcap" (Screen recorder) installed in Ubuntu, the problem I have is the version I have installed is an older version and there is a newer version avaliable, but I don't want to install the newer version as this breaks some functionality regarding screen capturing e.g. audio capturing. But each time I run Update Manager the package appears in the list to be upgraded.
Is there anyway to flag the package as do not upgrade or something to make it not appear in Update Manager or at least have it greyed out so the checkbox isn't automatically checked each time update manager is ran?

I get this error when I try to load Synaptic. In addition to that, the Ubuntu Software Center does not work when I try to search for and/or look at applications.
I isntalled Ubuntu 10.04 LTS in a dual boot configuration with Windows 7 (new i5 desktop, 8 GB DDR3) , and after a few gliches solved, Ubuntu runs. The problem I have is when I try to install software with the Synaptic Package Manager, no packages can be downloaded. Also, after I attempt this, no other software can connect to the Internet (even if that software was able to connect before). Rebooting restores connectivity.
