The upgrade from 10.10 to 11.04 on my Lenovo Thinkpad 500 completed without any errors showing, but after booting I get a text login only, no graphical login screen. This is quite frustrating as no error message was shown during the upgrade and no error message is shown on the screen during or after boot.
View 5 RepliesI'm experiencing an annoying issue since I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.4: when I try to put my Laptop to sleep, the control sign for suspension starts blinking and that's it: the system hangs and I've got to kill it with pressing the power button. Resuming doesn't work either, same symptoms.
View 9 Replies View Relatedwhen I tried to download a installation DVD of F10 for my new thinkPad T500 laptop.The architecture of the processor should be i686 and I downloaded the DVD image Fedora-10-i386-DVD.iso. I understand i686 has backward compatability with i386. But i have following questoins:
(1) why we don't have an installation for i686?
(2) If I install the i386 package, do I get performance downgrades?
(3) Also, why the live DVD has this file called F10-i686-Live.iso?
(4) Finally, I always get message like "Warning: Cannot convert string "nil2" to type FontStruct
/usr/bin/xterm: cannot load font -misc-fixed-medium-r-semicondensed--13-120-75-75-c-60-iso10646-1" when I use X application. What's the problem here? BTW, I used Fedora core 8 before I didnt have this problem.
I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my Lenovo T500. The wireless interface information is listed at the bottom of this message.I would like to connect to my Airport Extreme wireless router which is password protected. The bottom of the router lists three MAC addresses with different symbols next to them. I assume the symbols mean different types of connections (e.g., firewire, ethernet cable, etc).
The network icon on the upper right corner of the screen indicates that wireless is enabled. However, I don't get a wireless connection. I checked that the switch on the front of the laptop is "on" for wireless.
I have made a complete mess of a Lenovo T500 Win 7 and Ubuntu dual boot system. I won't go into a long story of how and why I did what I did but jump to the final mess I have. Win 7 is still on the machine it's original partition. Lenovo's recovery partition is still there. The linux swap partition is still there. The partition Ubuntu used to live on is still there but through my own errors unallocated. GRUB is broken and reports this message on boot.

I can boot from the Live USB and see what remains after the mess I've made. Attempts to reinstall Ubuntu onto it's original partition fail because the installer cannot see it. It wants to put Ubuntu into the Win7 partition.I cannot use the ThinkVantage button or F11 to access Lenovo Rescue and Recovery to restore the machine to factory settings and then reinstall Ubuntu.
I cannot use the methods described in other threads on this forum to fix a broken GRUB requiring a Win7 rescue DVD because I don't have one. I have come to trust Lenovo's hidden partition with rescue and recovery files to restore the machine to factory state. (This is my 3rd Lenovo, but my first Win7)
All important files have been backed up, recovery is not necessary.In the end I need to be able to boot into Win 7. This is a work computer, others use it from time to time and don't want to use Ubuntu. So wiping the entire HD and running Ubuntu is not an option. I would like to leave Lenovo's hidden partitions intact as they are usually a good way to recover from a mess. I would very much like to have Ubuntu back as I prefer it to Win 7, Vista and XP.
I can boot from the Live USB into Ubuntu 10.10 and see that the Win7 OS and Lenovo hidden partitions are still there. Attempts to install a fresh copy of Ubuntu 10.10 are not going well because the installer cannot find the partition Ubuntu was first on.
1 - fix or remove GRUB
2 - use GParted to repair my damage to Ubuntu's partition so that Ubuntu's installer recognizes it
3 - reinstall Ubuntu
My unskilled messing about has left my HD partitioned as follows as reported by GParted

Got a new Lenovo T500, slapped 9.10 on it. Set of programmes is exactly as on my previous IBM T42, but every so often I get a random crash. No errors, just a complete freeze with a "underscore" cursor in the top-left of the screen.I think / suspect it may have something to do with Transmission running, or perhaps the recent kernel update to 2.6.31-17.Anyone else had anything similar? Maybe on a T400 or R60 / R61 / T60 / T61?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have had my thinkpad for just a few short months and, it must be that we are heading into summer, but I am starting to finally run into some overheating issues especially when compiling software for awhile, i.e. kernel.
My question would be, "Is it best to let the built in thermal management take care of the issue, and I just need to know what to tweak, or to put on a script solution such as the tp-fancontrol script?
The computer takes about 5-10 minutes to overheat and the message I get in /var/log/messages is "logger: ACPI group thermal_zone / action THM1 is not defined" then it shuts down.
So, any pointers in the right direction would be appreciated.

While upgrading to a newer version of Ubuntu I noticed a warning saying that the installation/upgrade should not be interupted. Unfortunately though, during this process my computer froze up and I had to shut it down. Ubuntu no longer starts on my computer. I still have Windows though, which is what I'm using now.

I am trying to upgrade from 10.4 to 10.10. I have never had a problem upgrading before with the Update Manager. Now I get an error message when using the Update Manager. This is most likely a transient problem, please try again later. I tried again several times in different days and it is the same. I have 10.4 recently updated from my original installation of 9.10. I think it was not a pre-release, I did it automatically from the website and it took a long time. As far as I know, all I have installed is official, except perhaps Skype itself.
I was trying to update from 9.04 to 9.10.
During the installation, I kept getting tons of errors. Finally something came up saying that I had to abort the installation and it did some stuff. I tried running an application, but I got an error. So I restarted the system.
The normal screen came up where I had to choose the Ubuntu stuff (I'm new to Ubuntu) in the box. I noticed that it had gone to 8.10... which I had earlier before installing 9.04, which went great. So I chose the first on and the system failed to start. I rebooted and tried all the other options, but they all had errors. Now I'm booted to Windows.
I installed Ubuntu from a CD I created. But it is now outdated because it is 8.10, and I have already upgraded to 9.04. 9.04 to 9.10 is where stuff went wrong.

Initially i tried upgrading FC 8 to FC 10 and installation was stuck around 30% completion saying its unable to fins libdbi-0.8.3-1.fc9.i386.rpm. Then I tried to install FC 10 from scratch as system went to inconsistent state and faced two issues with two different setup options -
1) when i selected necessary software to be installed for office use and development, it failed after installing 20% saying libgnomeui-devel-2.24.0-2.fc10.i386.rpm
2) i then opted for for software to be installed for office use (default option) then it failed after installing around 50% saying libXrandr-1.2.3-1.fc10.i386.rpm
im trying to understand if this is a problem due to my laptop configuration (AMD Athlon 64 X2 Duel Core) or due to issue with the live CD.
Is there a way to get rid of the need to feed debian apt-get upgrade the original installation cd-rom? I'd like to have all on the hdd and point there in order to avoid having to take the cd-rom along.
