Ubuntu Networking :: 10.04 - 8.04LTS And 10.04LTS Have A Pre-installed NIC Driver That Is Not Compatible With The Bcm5705?
May 7, 2010
I attempted a distribution upgrade from 8.04LTS (32 bit) to 10.04LTS (32 bit). Once converted, I had no wireless or wired internet, along with numerous other bugs. After relentless hours of trying to resolve the problems, I converted back to 8.04LTS and installed the b43 drivers; I have wireless, however, still no wired connection. I've provided the outputs of the "sudo lshw -C network" terminal command below both before conversion to 10.04 and after reversion back to 8.04LTS. You'll notice that the NIC is not even listed after reversion (this is the same output that 10.04LTS gave me as well).
1.) Does anyone know if the terminal command will identify the NIC if the NIC Driver (assuming it's tg3) is not installed?
2.) Does 8.04LTS and 10.04LTS have a pre-installed NIC driver that is not compatible with the bcm5705?
I've recently upgraded from 8.04LTS to 10.04LTS. About 90% of the time after boot-up, my mouse cursor seems to be corrupted; I can vaguely see the arrow (or part of it anyway) underneath some squiggly lines. The application KeePassX is affected too; there are some display corruption issues. Sometimes (maybe 1 boot in 10) the mouse cursor looks fine. I have a Radeon 9200 and have looked in the Forum for similar problems but they don't quite match up to mine.
I initiated the on-line upgrade from 8.04 LTS to 10.04 LTS. When the upgrade finished and restarted the computer, I got the following messages:
ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/32a1eb0a-c9a4-4867-ac4d-5fbb2acafa76 does not exist. opping to a shell! BusyBox v1.13.3 (ubuntu 1:1.13.3-1 ubuntu11) built-in shell (ash) Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands. (initramfs)
I cannot access ubuntu anymore. I have ubuntu 10.04LTS Lucid Lynx. Ubuntu always prompts me to do updates. On the last update, the system wasn't able to find 4 files online. So it aborted the update and reverted to the previous state. On the next startup I could still access ubuntu. But the startup after that I got the inlog-screen (with username and password), and even with the correct username and password that's as far as it goes. In the lower right corner it says:
Install problem! The configuration defaults for GNOME Power Manager have not been installed correctly contact your administrator. What can I do to access ubuntu again? I can, when I reboot, start up in recovery mode (but I have no clue what to do with the prompt). I can also start up older 'kernels': kernel 2.6.32-30-generic, 2.6.32-29-generic, 2.6.32-28-generic, 2.6.32-24-generic. Each of them also has a recovery mode. Not sure if this is useful at all though. Laptop: AMD Turion(tm) 64 Mobile Technology MT-37, 1.99 GHz, 1,00 GB RAM.
I have a elonex web book with UB 10.04lts installed. Now when i installed aircrack package and tried to scan using airodump-ng mon0 (card in monitor mode) it worked fine and picked up my test APs but wouldn't inject. So i downloaded the drive below and now i cant even use airodump it just sits there?
I am sorry if this seems long I tried to only list the information I thought was pertinent to my wireless issue. I do get 2 of my neighbors wireless networks to show up but mine does not and it has the strongest signal by far. I have 3 other computers connected to it also on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
My network crashes randomly under regular traffic and more rapidly under high traffic (i.e. running Transmission) and I have to reboot to get it to start working again.
About system: Toshiba Satellite A105-S2021 512MB RAM BIOS V2.30 (Latest) Ubuntu 10.04LTS (Fresh install, not an upgrade) (Only OS on this machine) 2.6.32-27-generic #49-Ubuntu SMP [Code]....
I updated to the the new 10.04 this morning and find I cannot shut down or restart my machine using the software power off button, in the corner of the screen.
Just upgraded from Ubuntu 8.04 lts to 10.04 lts. Now OOo crashes about half the time I try to open a network (samba) file in OpenOffice.org Writer or calc. However, when I have the same file on the local machine, it has no problems opening the file.
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling OOo from Synaptic still crashes on opening some files (but not all files) from the network.
Uninstalled and reinstalled using the OOo download: 3.2.1; had to use gftp to download it; http would not save it.
Still having the problem with OOo 3.2.1 crashing on many files.
Workaround is to open readonly, then resave it. Cannot resave on top of the read only file , so it is a two step process.
Ubuntu 10.04 installed like a charm (I only need to find out why the headphones work but the main speakers do not), but at the end when the procedure ejected the CD, I immediately got:
I/O Error on Device sr0
repeated over and over for a couple dozen blocks.
I did a hard reset and the system is acting normally, but I'm wondering if other people have had the same problems?
Also, when running glxgears, is a score of 3000 normal for the Intel GMA HD video chipset?
When I turn on my laptop I have 2 options - to load my previous WIN XP OS, or my beloved UBUNTU 10.04 LTS. One day, (out of the blue) when I tried to load my Ubuntu sys, Irecievded this strange command line setting, as followes: Grub4dos 0.4.4 2009-04-20 memory: 638k/1013m menuEnd: 0x434E6Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported (and some more info regarding clicking TAB in order to display the command options)grub<_ (A command line) Pressing ESC, I enter this strange option menu, which Ive never seen before and which does not display normally when I turn on the computer. Find /ubuntu/disks/boot/grub/menu.lst(pressing this will display the following:' Error 15: File not found ")
I am running 10.04 LTS inside Windowsxp.LTS is totally updated. What is more,in the settings section of update manager I have ticked to show normal releases as well.Still, update manager is not displaying "10.10 is available"Thus, unable to upgrade.
I'm trying to get a touch screen working with Ubuntu 10.04LTS (32bit) //changed to 32 bit -it is a serial touchsceen, connected at /dev/ttyS0 ,i know that works because I get garbage in the terminal when I enable it. -before the screen used a 3m driver (I believe) in XP.
My knowledge of Linux is passive so I generally pick up something when I need it. To get this working I came accross a lot of tutorials (a lot outdated a bit), I'm still at a loss to get this work.
I'm not sure where to put linux drivers (/usr/ or /dev/?) most tutorials kind of skip over that part. I have tried editing the /etc/X11/xorg.conf unsuccessfully. I'm not sure what the syntax for that is supposed to be.
I have somewhat managed to fix the laptop, x100e, by not being on battery and installing the ATI driver. But then the wireless doesn't work, nor do the drivers I had working with 9.10 (RT8192SE). So, that's scrapped. A laptop without wireless is pretty useless.Workstation does a complete lockup on login aswell. HasNvidia 9300 onboard card. But at this point, I don't want to find out what else is waiting when I fix that.I was really expect a rock solid release since it was going to be LTS. But at the moment it's pretty useless to download and I have been using Ubuntu since 7.xx series.
I am having trouble installing Ubuntu Server 10.04LTS on an IBM x3650 server (Model 7945 K2G). The install CD cannot find the drives, so I cannot continue with the installation. Manually selecting mptsas as the storage driver doesn't work either.I have tried various permutations:
1. 64 / 32 bit Ubuntu Server
2. Using weBIOS to configure a RAID0 redundant virtual drive or not
3. Loading BIOS defaults or messing with most of the related settings
This particular server makes use of the ServeRAID M1015 controller (based on an LSI SAS2008 device).
vote on the best automated deployment for 10.04 lts desktop! have 50units identical pc's, one pdc (openldap, bind, dhcp) and one fs (nfs server). thinking of installing just one pc with all the updates, program addons and stuff, then thinking of: disk image the disk and copy to the rest of the 49units and just edit the host name and activate the etho by sudo mv /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules.old would this be ok? i mean there will be no problem if users authenticate an stuff?
I just upgraded my server, and now I am stuck at "Kernel panic- not synching: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)" I have read other suggestions about booting to previous kernels to reinstall latest kernel, but that doesn't work since I can't boot to any kernel. How can I fix this with the restore cd or from grub2 command line. Reinstalling is not an option as I have lots of configurations that I don't want to lose.
I recently upgraded from 9.04 to 10.04LTS , i wanted to start a fresh and i click the option for Ubuntu to use entire hard-drive. However on closer inspection Ubuntu has created two partitions , one sized at 289 GB and the other at 8.5GB the 8.5GB partition is the one with the os installed on it. It is sadly locked and i cant combine the two partitions :/.
I just bought a USB Hard Drive to install ubuntu to show friends. I was able to boot the Live CD but I noticed the option to install to USB was missing. I believe I last saw this in 8.10. So, I went searching the forums for solutions but all I found was the Windows Executable "usb-installer.exe" . So, I try to look for this, its not there. Does anyone know what I need to do to do this? I'm going to be using this as a portable install across lots of different computers, Does this make a difference?
On a windows system I installed xampp, and let web applications on the computer be acceseable via internet . On a forum I was firmly instructed that it was an unsecure pracsis. Now I saw on utube, that it is possible to install apache and php on ubuntu 10.04 lts desktop edition.
q1: What shall I install to get apache and php and sql databases?
q2: Is runnings web applications that are acceseable via internet on a ubuntu desktop edition with the above descripted software also unacceptable in terms of security, or is it a productive secure platform. I was told that productive platforms are ok to connect to the internet.
I have been running 8.04LTS on a Sony Pentium III with Intel 810 chipset as a desktop system but with the servers installed so I could prototype web sites. The updates two days ago (Feb 23) have broken my theme display and screensaver. I can't get the background image to display like it used to do and none of the Applications Menu icons are showing. I have a second 8.04LTS system on a P4 Intel motherboard that got the same updates and is working fine, nothing broke that I can see.
I tried to use the 'Screens and Graphic' application to set the screen back to what I wanted but it wouldn't 'stick'. I finally hand edited xorg.conf so that it would boot up in a screen that I could use. Still, the 'X' close and min/max icons in the window corners still don't show. This makes it inconvenient to use though it still works as a web server. I dont' know where to look from here.
After upgrading to 10.04LTR 64bit I encountered this problem below... I have already tried -f / --configure to no avail.

just upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04LTS and upon first reboot it gets stuck at the splash screen.. it just keeps loading over and over, nothing happens.I don't have the liveCD as I just did the download from the internet via Synaptic Softwarethis is what I tried:hit ESC when GRUB menu loads.. tried to hit "e" on the boot option and nothing happens.. I was told changing quite splash to nomodeset would fix it but it doesn't even say quiet splash, unless someone wants to walk me through it.I'm soo frustrated, I have tons of e-mails and documents that I need to save.is there a fix to get me back in just so I can copy my emails and docs and do a fresh install?
can't find a page that lists what improvements were made over 10.04lts bugs fixed, etc. My problem is scanner / print software 10.04 found my printer and prints fine. Unless there is a power outage. Then I have to manually enter in the sometimes new URL. Because 10.04 does NOT actively rescan for the printer.
But none of the software actuates the scanner. signal is sent to scan, but never actually scans and retrieves the image. Using a Epson NX515 scanner / printer all in one. Found a page on the web that supposedly has drivers etc for this, but not sure I should try to download and install. Tried all scan software listed in the Ubuntu software center none work.
