I have an older compaq laptop (P4). I just wanted to be able to boot a live cd. The trouble is the only live cd I can get to boot is SUSE 9.2 and it ends up having a scripting error. It is an old disk so it is probably shot.
I have tried to get fedora 14 to boot, but it will not. A newer computer I have will boot from the FC14.
why I cannot get the live CD's to boot?
I have a Windows laptop that isn't booting up anymore for some reason Safe Mode doesn't even work. Looking at what is printed out when it hangs, I did a search on google and it is some sort of HP laptop problem. Apparently the hard drive should still be OK, if only I can access it somehow. I was thinking maybe I could use one of those live Linux CDs to boot up. But I'm not too familiar with those. Would they be able to detect the laptop's DVD burner, and allow me to burn files off the NTFS partition to a blank DVD? I want to get my data off before I hand the laptop over to the IT department - who knows what they will do to it. So exactly which live Linux CD flavor should I use (my other working computer only has a CD burner)? And then would it be easy to burn a DVD after booting up the live Linux CD?
View 1 Replies View RelatedA few weeks ago I installed Fedora Linux 64-bit on my HP dv4-1428ca laptop which was running Windows 7. At that time I created a Live USB using the fedora-live usb tool and it booted fine. A couple days ago I decided to try out openSUSE, so I downloaded the 64-bit live-cd image and tried to create a live usb using the SUSEStudio ImageWrite provided in the documentation. The tool kept giving me an error message, so I decided to try unetbootin instead. However, when I tried to boot the live usb on my HP laptop, it presented me with the message.
"SYSLINUX 4.04 EDD 2011-04-18 COPYRIGHT (C) 1994-2011 H. PETER ANVIN ET AL" with a blinking cursor and nothing else. I've tried a variety of alternative programs for creating live USB's (pendrivelinux, linux live usb creator, unebootin), and verified the checksum of the iso file for openSUSE 11.4 64-bit, and still was not able to get past the "SYSLINUX..." message on my HP laptop. However, the live USB does boot on the other computers in my house. Interestingly, if I create a live USB using the tool provided by Fedora, it will boot fine. However the Fedora Live USB tool cannot be used for other distros.

320 GB Hard Drive
Fed up with Windows and ready to become a Linux convert. Here's the only problem:
I've created no less than four separate Live USB distros - all using different USB sticks -
yet my HP Pavilion dv7 refuses to recognize any of them as "bootable devices."
1) Have formatted USB sticks in FAT16 & FAT32 - neither made a difference.
2) Have created bootable USB sticks using Ubuntu Minimal Live install; Ubuntu full Live install; PuppyLinux Live install; even a simple gparted live install - none will boot.
3) Have checked & re-checked that BIOS is set to boot first from USB drive device.
4) 2 of the 4 USB sticks are new, fresh out of the packaging; and 3 of the 4 USB sticks are each from different manufacturers - so I'm fairly certain it's not a issue of a particular brand being incompatible, nor is it due to the sticks being corrupted somehow.
5) Each of the 4 live distros appears to have downloaded just fine - all necessary files appear to be in order.
6) Have tried using Unetbootin, Ubuntu's own live usb tool, and 1 or 2 others - all have failed to boot my HP laptop.
7) Have even tried removing all non-essential hardware before booting - even booting with no hard drives installed - system still returns the error "no bootable device detected."
This laptop is only 2 years old; I know it should be able to boot from USB. I can boot from a (rather old) SliTaz distro on CD just fine - but I need a persistent USB stick so I can easily add packages as needed, etc...s.
I have an older computer that doesn't support booting from USB. Is there a boot CD that will boot an OS from USB such as the way Etherboot does for computers that don't support PXE?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install Ubuntu 9.10 on an older IBM laptop from a LiveCD. (Windows stopped working and I thought this would be a great time to try Linux!) When I boot up Ubuntu (which takes forever) it starts up, but I don't think it is recognizing the wireless card (DL 650). One suggestion I got from the net was to disable the acx module by blacklisting it with the statement:
blacklist acx
in the blacklist.conf file.
The next step is to install ndiswrapper with:
sudo apt-get install ndiswrapper-common
The last step is to get the Windows driver (I have it) and put it in a directory. Then go to that directory and type:
sudo ndiswrapper -i AIRPLUS.INF. This is all well and good, but where do I do these things to test to see if it works and ultimately, if it works, to set it up this way permanently? How do I edit blacklist.conf if this is a LiveCD and as soon as I turn off the machine everything goes away? I am not sure that I can install on the hard disk at this point because I don't want to wipe out Windows yet (it isn't my computer). I would like to prove Ubuntu (or maybe Xubuntu) before committing to it. I am also not sure that the single USB port will allow me to install a USB stick version of Ubuntu.

1) Originally, my laptop came with Windows Vista. Then I got a SUSE linux 11.0 CD, let it make a partition and installed Suse 11.0. Since Suse11.0 isn't updated any further I would like to change to Suse 11.3 (or whatever is newer). How should I proceed? (I can't find my old Windows Vista CDs and would like to KEEP THE PARTITION, thus formating all isn't an option)
2) In order to make a backup I bought a portable hard drive from iomega (USB 2.0). Then I noticed that it is formated in NTFS. SUSE 11.0 doesn't seem to like it --- what should I do? Can I reformat it somehow?
3) Suse 11.0 doesn't like my sound card. Thus I couldn't Skype or listen to music --- do you know if this problem is solved under Suse 11.3?
I just installed the latest version of Ubuntu on my Toshiba Sattelite A25-207 laptop. I totally erased my previous Windows XP OS and everything else. Everything is great, execept the screen resolution. The resolution is set at 800 x 600 and I know that my screen can handle bigger. How do I change this?

I recently installed Ubuntu Karmic Koala onto my old IBM Thinkpad (I THINK it's an X23 model, but don't quote me on it). The only reason I went with the older, obsolete version is, honestly, it's the only one that will run on it. That said, I love it and see no reason to go back to Lose-dows full time (I'll still get a Windows machine in order to learn the inner workings of it... thinking of going back to school for a tech job, so the knowledge will do me good).When I bring up various windows (most disturbingly, my system monitor), I get a bizarre glitch. View 8 Replies View RelatedI've had no problems with Linux Mint Live CD's, Mandriva works fine too, but after burning the latest Fedora 14 Gnome Live CD, boot attempts result in flashing Caps Lock/Num Lock and the optical drive just spinning but not seeking ... off into never-neverland.Computer is HP 2530p with L9600 CPU.Download checks out as good, tried burning a different CD but no change.I have administered SAMBA and stuff like that before, but this is kinda a newbie question
View 10 Replies View RelatedI am using an HCL k38 pdc laptop and I am unable to boot KDE live cd of opensuse 11.4. The system boots to a graphical screen where a progress bar is shown. the progress bar proceeds to about 90% and then my system hangs. ALl I can see on my screen is that graphical image with suse logo and progress bar. Though my mouse works and I can move it all around the desktop but if I try pressing any key (CAPS/NUM LOCK/SCROLL LOCK) i dont see any LED notification for that. this concludes that the system is hanged.
Key board has no issue as I can use it in Windows.
I tried to boot the lice cd in text mode and it worked very fine from there I installed the system on to my HDD in dual boot mode with windows XP. But after installation when I boot opensuse from HDD it stucks at the same position.
I think this issue is with Nvidea graphics card as when the system boots I see an error message that says that the RAM has an address conflict with VGA ROM.
How can I use opensuse. I have even tried ubuntu 10.10 but it also hangs while booting or after booting. So far I have been able to manage only Sabayon Linux working on this machine however the ubuntu 9.10 was working on this system and it also started behaving similarly after I upgraded it to ubuntu 10.04.
I just installed Ubuntu 9.10 on an older PC (for some reason 10+ locks it up) and it takes a really long time for it to boot up. After the motherboard screen passes, I see the blinking cursor on the screen like it's loading, but it takes about five minutes until it finally boots to the OS. This isn't native to Ubuntu, it did the same thing with Mint. The PC was never this slow to boot up before, but I hadn't used it in about a year. Originally, I had WinXP and Ubuntu on it and it always started up pretty quick. Would this be a hardware problem or something else?

I have just tried to load Ubuntu 11.04 live CD (DVD) onto an IBM M52/MMC/8214. I bought the M52 to replace an older PC, which loaded the DVD without problem, so there is no problem with the DVD. The M52 works fine with Windows. Following is what happens when I try to load the DVD:
...finds Mac address
...finds GUID
...sits on DHCP.../ for a couple of minutes
then displays
...PXE-E53: No boot filename received
followed by
PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel Boot Agent
1962: No operating system found.
It then boots into Windows. I'm not entirely new to Linux, having played with Ubuntu for a while, but have never had a problem. Now, I'm stuck!
Is there a secret button combination like a PC's F2 or Delete that forces an Xbox to boot from a CD?

View 5 Replies View RelatedM$ 7 on my new laptop (one month out of warranty)has died. I have several iso files and several downloaded programs that I wish to put on DVDs before I do a restore. I have tried Slax, Kubuntu, and Mint from USB live boot. None of them will let me burn the files to DVDs. My largest USB stick is 4gig. K3b in Slax shows that I don't have enough temp file space, but will not let me use the hard drive for temp.
Options I am considering:
Getting a larger USB stick. Booting from CD and copying up to 4gigs at a time and moving it to my desk top. Resizing the ntfs partition to give me about 20-30gigs for installing Slackware. Buying an external hard drive and copy them to it. (starting to really like this one) Forgetting it and restore and spend many hours downloading them again. (Really would rather not) I can do any of these options, but want to see if there is an option I haven't considered.
Trying to boot backtack 4 and I am running into issues. There are a few different options to boot from. And this happens with whichever option I choose.

Other live distros work. I have tried 2 different isos and 4 different dvds. And the live boot works when I try it in virtualbox. Per a google search I turned plug and play os on and off in the bios. Haven't tried much else.
I'm having trouble getting my computer to boot from two different linux live cds, and I'm looking for ideas. Last night, I downloaded both Damn Small and Puppy linux to my emac and burned disk images of both. When I tried to boot my Dell Inspiron 8100 with them, they both appeared to work at first, but then both stopped booting part way through the process. I've run this computer on an earlier live cd version of Puppy without any problems before, and the fact that neither disk works leads me to believe I did something wrong when burning them.
I downloaded the iso files for both Puppy and Damn Small and burned these as images each to their own disk. This all I remember doing before, and I like I said, it worked in the past. I'll post more details later in the day--like where the boot process actually stops and what versions of each system I downloaded, but if this rings any bells for anyone.
I admit that I am a bit confused on how to proceed with this.I currently have an older version of Ubuntu (6 something) and windows vista and I have dual booting. I am trying to install 10.04 on top of the older Ubuntu and I want to keep the Windows partition. Last time I tried, I completely screwed up.I have multiple partitions now with a bunch of smaller ones that got created by mistake. I would like to re-size my partitions to have 1 main windows partition, 1 linux partition and 1 swap file partition. My HD is 160GB and I would ideally like to have the Ubuntu and Windows partitions roughly the same size.I included some screenshots of the install process and also a screenshot of my partitions.

Well, I wasn't sure what the problem was so I decided to run the live CD again (which *is* a good CD, unless it somehow managed to destroy itself since yesterday) and I get "Could not mount root filesystem," sleeping forever. Hm.I haven't changed any of the hardware, and all the connections seem to still be good, so, I dunno... Any ideas on what could be the problem? [URL] I'm currently running simplyMEPIS 8.0.15 (rel 32). It's booting automatically off a USB. The way I have it configured right now, it just loads right up without a root menu or boot-options, just basically going straight to "hey, u ROOT or DEMO?" I'm not sure if there's a way to get back to the bash and load directly to RAM at this point.
In another thread I was looking into burning backups from k3b as I run live because my DVD-player isn't behaving right now under windows... 'still working on that I want to get a backup done before I do a hard install. It's my goal to get either Kismet, wireshark, or Airsnort/crack/peek running on this machine so I can start gathering packets and doing analysis. Is that a way that (atleast for the timebeing until I can work out backups) that I can install any of these programs directly to the USB (by editing the ISO somehow?), so that they'll be available when I liveboot?
I am having a laptop with Vista installed on it. I have an Ubuntu live CD (karmic) which is refusing to boot on this machine. I get an error : "Error reading boot CD" and a reboot button. I have tried this cd on other machines and it works fine. I tried live CD of kubuntu also but the same error message appears. What could be the reason?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've recently upgraded to Natty (11.04).The problem that is now occurring, and reoccurring, is like this:- Computer boots, but hangs on a purple screen (nothing on it). Nothing happens, after 15 minutes or so I give up waiting and hard reset.- Boot via Grub (holding shift) into recovery-mode: works fine, but I want the GUI, so I reboot.- After reboot the system hangs again, as mentioned before.- Hard reset again, and booting a previous kernel (2.6.32.8 ): works fine!- Restart again, boots in most recent kernel (2.6.38.10): works fine now.- Try to shutdown/restart again, problem re-occurs every time. So I use the workaround with the extra startup with the older kernel again.and finally typing this.

I put Fedora-14-x86_64-Live-Desktop.iso in the root directory of the FAT32 partition D: (sda5) then extracted isolinux from this ISO, and put it on D: I followed the isolinux.cfg file, and wrote a menu.lst as follows:

I want to dual boot Fedora 11 and Windows Vista, and the last time I tried I deleted my Windows Vista (big no no). So, I've made a partition of about 30GB, and I'm trying to go through the installation (from the live CD), but I don't know quite what to do? If I select Shrink existing disk, it doesn't let me do it for any amount that I put in, by the way.
