Ubuntu Installation :: Lucid Upgrade - Can't Access Huey - Dispcal Error
May 1, 2010
Upgraded a 9.10 installation to 10.04 and now, on trying to execute Dispcal I get
dispcal: Error - new_disprd() failed with 'Instrument Access Failed'
The lights on the Huey flash as if calibration is about to start, but then I get the error. The Huey is connected as it always has been, via a USB hub. No change there. I have also re-installed the Argyll package. A disconnect and reconnect of the Huey prompts this.

Just upgraded to Lucid from Karmic, but I've got two problems:
1: After install I restarted, but it just showed the boot loader for 1 second and then black screen!
I then thought I would just reinstall Ubuntu so I used the Live CD to access the folders on the computer to get a backup.
2: But some of the folders in the Documents folder has got a white cross over it and when I try to open them I get the message: "The folder contents could not be displayed."
What I want is just to get the files (some of them is a bit important) and make a quick reinstall so if somebody knows a way to open the folders and make a backup it would be GREAT.

I'm currently upgrading my laptop, and it has completed the step "Getting new packages", and is now onto "Installing the upgrades".It says it is going to take another 2.5 hours, but I am leaving work soon and want to take the laptop with me. Is it safe to disconnect it from the internet at this point? I don't want to fudge up the install, but I don't want to have to leave my laptop at work all weekend (or have to come back and pick it up at some point).

I upgraded successfully last night from Hardy Heron to Lucid Lynx, but have no sound now. After searching around I can see that this is a fairly common problem. But none of the proposed solutions that work for other people have yet worked for me.
If I type 'alsamixer' at the command line, everything looks fine. There are no 'MM's indicating something being muted. I tried removing and reinstalling alsamixer and pulseaudio with no success. Edited lines 45 and 46 of /etc/pulse/default.pa with no luck.

I have a dual boot system with Win XP and Ubuntu (using grub boot menu). I recently upgraded my Ubuntu from 9.04 (Jaunty) to 10.04 (Lucid) and now I cannot boot into Ubuntu - I just get a desktop with no icons or disk activity. I think this may have something to do with the fact that I answered 'no' when asked whether to replace my menu.1st file, and possibly some others. So my boot menu still refers to 9.04.

I can't upgrade from Karmic to Lucid,If I try to use the update manager I get a message that says "Can't download release notes. Check your Internet connection". I've tried changing the repository and I get the same message, but I can log in to the Internet, and download and install any program from the repository. I also get regular updates for Karmic so the repository is fine.I tried the command line
Code:
~$ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

I wonder if others have upgraded their Lucid kernel using the deb [URL]..repository. I have been using the repository for some time now without any apparent problems, and have gone from 2.6.36-1, through 2.6.37-10, and am now on 2.6.37-12.
All of these seem to work with no problems at all, but I am just wondering if other users can also report success, or if there are any trip-ups that might occur. I still keep updating the "standard" kernel from the main repos, ie 2.6.32-27, so I have that as a backup, but I'm just very curious about other people's findings.

I read recently about security flaws in the ubuntu kernel, and when I checked my kernel, it is 2.6.32-29-generic. I looked in synaptic, and I have the linux-generic meta-package - which should ensure upgrade to the latest kernel, and yet this is not being updated when I run update manager. There is a linux-image-2.6.35-25-generic, but the advice is not to install this directly (to avoid breaking dependencies, etc.), but to install the meta-package instead. Yet, the meta-package doesn't seem to be doing what is should do.

Right after I type in my username and password and hear the usual login sound I have to wait about 15 to 20 seconds to get the X desktop. The system load average monitor is at its max and starts to become lower. If I log out and in again I dont get that delay. It only happens with logging in after a reboot/power on.I tried to open a console (Ctrl+Alt+F1) before I log in, move back to X and login then jump to console and use htop to see what's eating up my resources during that time with no luck. Everything seems to be normal.

After upgrading from Karmic to Lucid, no wireless networks are found on my computeran acer travelmate 5510. On Karmic, wifi worked flawlessly "out of the box"no windows drivers or anything needed. I have checked under Administration/hardware drivers; it tells me "no proprietary drivers are in use on this system." Cabled internet access through my wifi router works fine. How to get wifi up and running under Lucid. Despite having used Karmic for a while, I am relatively new to the inner workings of Ubuntu / linux systems, and really don't know where to go from here.

I have an AMD64 system, which I recently upgraded to Lucid 10.04. The system now fails to boot after the upgrade. Recovery mode makes no difference.
When I attempt to boot, I get a series of messages about file systems needing checking, and also some messages from ureadahead-other. (process terminated status 4), though a post here says that status 4 is in fact not an error.
I have sucessfully booted the Lucid desktop install CD in live CD mode, mounted the filesystems, and started parts of my system in a chroot. In that system I tried running an update, and removing plymouth, but it made no difference. how I can get my system working.
I did take a backup of /etc before I upgraded, so I could get back to a karmic install, but the pain in doing so would be considerable, so I would prefer to avoid that if possible.

I made the mistake of trying to upgrade my Karmic (server) installation to Lucid earlier today, after which I've been unable to boot into my server. The server is on OVH, so I can't watch it boot, but I am able to access all of the data from the filesystems via rescue mode. I ran fsck and that came back clean. I also ran the boot info script, the results of which are below.
I know my best bet is to backup what I can and do a fresh install, but I won't be able to back everything up so trying to get this working would certainly be more convenient. I'm sure I'm leaving out useful information, so let me know and I'll post it.

Upgrade to lucid (by running update-manager -d) succeeded with no major error. But when I reboot the computer, the boot splash screen is "Ubuntu Studio" and the login screen's background is a "Ubuntu-eee" png picture. A funny mess.I was able to get to the new boot splash screen by remove --purge ubuntu-studio, which I must have installed sometimes in the past, but I don't see anyway of getting the new theme for the login screen.I have this eeepc for about 2 years and never have to fresh-install Ubuntu except the first time. I much rather not have to fresh-install just to solve some aesthetic problems.I am pretty sure it's due to some package I installed in the past, but I don't see any Ubuntu-eee related package in Synaptic either.

A few days ago I made the mistake of upgrading to Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, and subsequently had nothing but trouble. My volume icon disappeared and for the life of me I couldn't find it or reinstall it. An eerily Windows-like chat icon has appeared next to my login name that I didn't ask for, and more importantly my handbrake program (Matroska encoder) completely stopped working.
I've learned in the past that LTS editions are not normal upgrades, and I should best avoid them. But this one appears from the Ubuntu homepage to be the standard upgrade from Karmic to Lucid. I've had to completely reinstall Karmic on my workstation just to be able to carry on as normal, but the laptop seems to be coping ok with the LTS edition. Can anybody tell me if this LTS is now the default upgrade for Lucid, or is this just a regular LTS and I should wait for my standard one to come out?

I just need some clarification on the best upgrade path for me. I currently have Karmic installed with a separate partition for /home. I want to do a clean install of lucid with the CD.
What's the safest way to ensure my /home partition remains untouched? Should I install lucid overtop the karmic partition and then indicate a mount point for the other partition? or should I leave /home alone completely during installation and then just manually configure the mount point after install?
Edit: I had previously upgraded from jaunty to karmic via the update manager. This worked well but Karmic has felt very buggy overall so I feel a clean install might be best. although the audio is silent when the live cd boots :S

Since my distribution upgrade to 10.04 my VirtualBox guest of XP SP3 will not boot, it bluescreens and reboots. I can boot the guest in last known good config and in safe mode but I have no CDROM. I attempted a tools install over the lan but that resulted in the same blue screen. Tried installing the virtualbox-3.2 beta package and guest tools and had the same results..

I had ubuntu 9.10, and every time i turned on my computer it would prompt me to upgrade, so finally i did. I let it upgrade over last night, then finished it this morning. when it went to restart, it turned off fine, but when it came back on, the screen goes through the Gateway first thing where it shows like F10 for boot from etc, and then the screen goes to a black command line looking screen, then it says ubuntu for a second, and then the screen goes black and does nothing. i let it sit for about an hour to see if it was just running slow, but it was still black when i checked it, so now my laptop is useless until i figure something out.

Just upgraded from Karmic to Lucid using auto upgrade on Thinkpad T42. Since doing this, I am experiencing random logging off. Suddenly, I get dumped to the log in screen and need to log back in. A search in the forum suggests this was a problem that some people had with Karmic, but is now fixed (I never experienced it with Karmic)
It seems to be associated with Firefox, with it not happened since switching to Chrome, but switching back to Firefox has just resulted in me being logged off. This could be a coincidence of course. This is rather serious problem as I use the Thinkpad to give presentations

After running 9.10 (Kubuntu) uneventfully on my Thinkpad x100e (chip: AMD Neo MV-40, graphics: Radeon HD 3200), I upgraded to Lucid and am getting a system freeze/hang.
I'm running the Xorg radeon driver.
At first the freeze was on the KDM login screen, right after the audio drumbeats. I upgraded the BIOS to the latest from Lenovo, and now I can log in, but it freezes right away while trying to build the desktop. I've tried the failsafe graphical boot, and all I get is a black screen.
I've seen some threads related to the i845/i855 chips, but that shouldn't be an issue here (although I tried some of the workarounds which didn't help). I'd like to avoid the fglrx driver if I can, but I'll give that a shot if I can't get past this.

I had a working workstation with Karmic. Then I decided to upgrade to Lucid. Bad move, it turns out.First the upgrade crashed. Just stopped doing something for hours on end, and I eventually had to reboot. After that, I had to apply lots of apt-get and dpkg love to get the machine to book. Now, I *think* I have a Lucid system, at last. Only that it doesn't work where the Karmic system used to...Our setup uses kerberos and autofs. To begin with, the upgrade lost my /etc/krb5.keytab (making it impossible to log in), but that can be easily replaced. Now, I can log in, but my home directory doesn't get mounted. In /var/log/auth.log, I get this:
Code:
Jun 23 11:13:58 pc13477 gdm-session-worker[1801]: pam_krb5(gdm:auth): pam_sm_authenticate: entry (0x0)

I notice the repository Thunderbird version is 3.0.5 but 3.1 is already released. I'm on 3.0.4 and it took me forever to find a compatible version of the Lightning extension, which I really need. Now I am afraid to upgrade to anything older than 3.1 because it might break Lightning, and I'm afraid to upgrade to 3.1 because maybe there's a reason it's not in the official repository yet (and because who knows if the latest version of Lightning really is compatible with the latest version of Thunderbird). My question is, is anybody out there currently running Thunderbird 3.1 with the Lightning extension on Kubuntu or Ubuntu 10.04, AMD64? Have you found it to be stable?
