yesterday i installed Ubuntu 10 and the installation was successful. When I rebooted my system to access my other OS which is Windows 7 from the drop down menu (see the attachment) available on the boot screen i'm unable to go to Windows 7 and it restarts again, goes to the same menu where i have to choose the OS. Even after several trials i'm still unsuccessful to boot my windows.
View 7 RepliesI'm a noob when it comes to this kind of stuff, so bear with me. Ok so my computer has 4 hard drives, a 640gb, 500gb, and two 320gbs. I have the larger two on a raid 0 array, which is also where I have windows installed. I installed Ubuntu on one of my spare 320gb drives, so that I wouldn't have to worry about partitioning. But now every time I boot my raid array in order to boot windows, grub will load and my computer will boot Ubuntu instead.

Ubuntu is working fine but if I try to boot windows in the Grub2 loader it goes do error and lets my to restart. I have finish the windows system recovery and setup repair several times and it won't find any problems. I can't get to windows loader.

I am sorry to post another thread regarding this problem, but after searching for hours in this forum and the internet, no suggested solution fixed my problem.I have 3 disks of 1TB in size. The first /dev/sda is where windows 7 64 is installed (partitioning: MBR).The second /dev/sdb is where I installed ubuntu 10.4 64bit (partitioning: GPT).The third is just for storage and is ntfs. No boot here.the grub2 is installed on mbr (/dev/sda)Also did a update-grub just to be sure, and testdisk.Grub finds all the oses and sort the to the list (including windows 7).Upon selecting Ubuntu, ubuntu boots fineBut If I select windows 7, I get a blackscreen and a blinking cursor on top left. No disk activity.I had a similar problem booting windows 7 when I had installed 9.10 in the past. The fix was to add the line:echo insmod part_msdoson the /etc/grub.d/00_header file because grub was inserting only the part_gpt module thus not recognizing the mbr partitions.
This is not a solution anymore.Trying to have a fix at least to boot into windows 7 using the windows disk, using repair, and command prompt as suggested somewhere here on the forum, did not solve anything. On the Repair dialog on start, windows see the installation, I choose fix, and it ends up that there are no problems to fix. After going to console, and issuing The BootRec commands, the /ScanOs and /RebuildBcd, say there are no windows installation. Great work Microsoft!. The installation is found on gui screen, but not on console.I did a clean install from the ubuntu 10.04 cd, just to see if solves the problem. but no. Same thing.And a stupid thing I did on update: I checked to install grub on every disk (just disks not partitions), when grub-config window showed up. Don't ask me why, I ask myself and I don't get an answer.Anyway, as I said, at least ubuntu boots fine and all disks are accessible. So, fortunately no data loss. The windows 7 option available on the grub menu ends up in a blinking cursor.Just in case, here is the results of my boot info script:

I have a question about dual booting windows 7 and ubuntu 9.10. What I want to be able to do is store my multimeda and open office files on a partition that can be read by both windows and ubuntu, I just don't know how to do this. What kind of partition should I make it? Should it be done in windows 7 or ubuntu?
View 2 Replies View Relatedi Have two Hard-drives a WD 500Gb Sata with windows 7 installed and an IDE Maxtor 40Gb mounted as slave .I want Ubuntu to be installed on the Maxtor.I usually used to choose grub to be installed on the MBR of the first one , but that meant that every time i needed to reinstall windows or Ubuntu i Would loose both of them, how to do so, without effecting the boot loader of the windows but still capable of booting both.Story made short, if i disconnect any of the hard drives i would still be capable of booting into the other.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI will like to triple boot Ubuntu, XP and Windows 7, but I already had Ubuntu and XP running on separate HDDs, Ubuntu was installed first, then I installed XP on a separate HDD (with the Ubuntu HDD disconnected), now I did the same for Windows 7, I disconnected all other HDDs (Ubuntu, XP and Data)and installed windows 7 on a separate HDD.When I connected everything back(Ubuntu HDD, XP, Data HDDs and Windows 7 HDD, Windows 7 does not appear on grub boot menu and now Windows 7 does not boot up by it self.
Is there a way to simply add Windows 7 to Grub so I can have all 3 OS's on grub menu?Can grub search HDDs to look for OSs to add to the menu?Funny thing is the XP entry on grub appeared by it self, I've never edited grub to add XP on the booting menu, I was booting directly to XP by going into the BIOS and selecting the XP HDD as my booting drive instead of Ubuntu HDD, somehow XP was added to the grub booting menu.
My windows vista stopped booting so I had re-install vista. Now that I have done that Vista automatically boots every time I turn on my computer. I can still see that the Linux partition is there but I do not know how to boot it.

I did the install from the 64 bit edition Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala iso file and when I restart is gives me the no root file system is defined. Please correct this from the partitioning menu. Unfortunately I don't know if it means the window installation or the Ubuntu one. I also don't know exactly how to get to it if it isn't the windows one. I also want a triple boot with Windows XP Professional SP 3 32 bit.
The Problem, installing ubuntu over top of windows and vice versa causes the windows boot menu to forget about ubuntu.The Solution:1. Using bcdedit from within windows to edit the boot menuClick Start -> Type Cmd.exe run it in elevated mode (as an administrator) by right clicking it and selecting "Run As Administrator" Inside the console type bcdedit, notice that the ubuntu boot entry is still there, for example i use three o/s , windows 7 professional x64, windows 7 ultimate x64 and Kubuntu and it looks like this

View 6 Replies View RelatedMy girlfriend upgraded from Karmic 9.10 to Lucid 10.04 when the upgrade became available. She did it from Update Manager as opposed to a clean install.
I have no idea what she did, or how the process works (I installed from a Live CD on my own computer) and ever since she did it, she hasn't been able to boot into Windows XP from GRUB2.
GRUB2 loads up fine, with Ubuntu and Windows listed. It'll boot into Ubuntu with no problems. Selecting Windows will just re-load GRUB2.
I've tried re-installing GRUB2 but that hasn't worked. My lack of imagination means I have no idea what to type in to Google, or the forum search.
I am going to be dual booting with Windows XP on my new netbook. I know that I will be required to re-install XP before I will have to reinstall Linux.
My question is about the /boot partition option. If I was to create a /boot partition, would that prevent Windows from erasing Grub when I reinstall Windows? I have been Googling and I can't find an answer so I figure it won't work but I better ask as it would make life a whole lot easier.
right now I have windows 7 encrypted with truecrypt and I want to dual boot Ubuntu 10.04(not encrypted). I'm going to shrink my windows partition to install Ubuntu. Is there a way to add ubuntu to truecrypts bootloader?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently did a fresh install of ubuntu 11.04 and seemed to have made a mistake with re-partitioning perhaps? I cant boot into windows anymore. I know all files are still there and intacct as I can access them from Ubuntu, but Something is wrong with the Booting of Windows now. I get to a screen which gives me system recovery options. When I perform the startup repair it scans for a few secnds and comes up with an error message "...System volume on disk is corrupt. Repair action: File system repair (chkdsk)...error code 0x1f" I even seems to have access to files on windows from this screen when I try a "Windows Complete system restore" It gives me the option to look on the hard drive or on a disk (I only have a Toshiba windows 7 upgrade disk and it doesnt seem to be helping)

Before now, I have either installed GRUB/GRUB2 to the MBR, or else installed Ubuntu and Windows to two different hard drives.
The machine in this case, a Samsung NP300-V5A-A02US notebook PC, has only a single hard drive. I cannot allow any alteration of the MBR, because then the Samsung backup/system recovery software (Samsung Recovery Solution 5) will no longer work.

I just pArtitioned my acer one netbook and installed fedora 12 to half my disk. Fedora is working just fine but when I try to boot I into 2 options. " completely restore system to factory defaults" and "restore operating system and retain user data". Should I do Any of these or should I reinstall windows?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI wanted windows to appear first in my grub2 menu so I renamed the 30_os_probe file(or whatever it felename is) to 09_os_probe so that it comes before the 10 linux file, problem is whenever these files get updated the updater is unable to find the 30_os_probe file since I renamed it and recreates it... leaving me with two versions (09 and 30) with 09 being of course outdated.
The updater also fails to run update-grub and instead attempts to update grub.cfg manually... and fails. I had to manually do a sudo update-grub.
Is there any way to fix this so its all updated automatically while leaving windows the top choice? No manual intervention required beyond clicking "install updates"?
Also, is it possible to JUST have the Windows and Ubuntu choices, no Ubuntu recovery, memtest, alternative(older) kernels for Ubuntu, etc in the grub menu?

Today I decided to install the BURG bootmenu on my computer so that I could enjoy nice, pretty graphical bootmenus instead of boring old text-based ones.I installed and configured BURG using this tutorial(after some few snafus wherein I tried to use older tutorials and went through many needless complicated steps that didn't end up working anyway).Restarted, and it worked great - except for one thing. Windows would no longer boot.It would get to the "Starting Windows" screen, then about halfway through there it would flash and restart.It wouldn't start in "Startup Repair Mode" either (the same thing happened). So, I did some frantic googling, and discovered this thread. I followed a set of instructions posted therein to install Lilo, reconfigure my MBR to Windows' liking, and reinstall Grub2.Windows booted after that.Well, I thought that the problem must have been caused by one of the numerous false starts I made while trying to get BURG installed, so I installed BURG again, set it up again, and bang - Windows wouldn't boot any more.So, I re-did the MBR with Lilo again, only this time I forgot to reinstall Grub2 (oops!) and had to boot from my LiveCD and install it thataway.At any rate, I'm fairly certain that installing BURG is what's keeping Windows from booting.
I have tried (a few times now lol) to get this setup. I am using Windows 7 64-bit and Ubuntu 10.4 64-bit. I have Windows 7 installed on one hdd, another hdd has the System Reserved partition along with a data partition for files, the third hdd is the one where I want to install Ubuntu. I have found numerous tutorials on installing them both on the same drive, but not on separate ones. The couple I have found haven't really worked.
I think that Ubuntu is installed correctly but there is no option to boot into it. Windows 7 just happily loads itself. I have tried reinstalling and selecting 'sdc1' (the native ubuntu partition) as the location for the bootloader to be installed and then used Easy BCD to add that location to the windows bootloader which gives the option to load Ubuntu but when selected dies complaining that there is a missing file (I think it just can't find the Ubuntu bootloader).
As an aside when I get to the installation screen the Ubuntu installer keeps on telling me that there are no operating systems detected on the machine (Even though I'm pretty sure the drive it is talking about 'sda' is where Windows 7 is installed). Not sure if that matters just seemed a little wierd.
I had Ubuntu installed in Windows XP (with Wubi). One day my motherboard, let's just say stopped working. So, I had to replace my motherboard..., well I bought a new PC, but with the Hard Drive of the old one. When I first started it i got the same boot screen letting me choose between Ubuntu and Windows XP. Well, you can pretty much figure out that none of them worked. So, I installed Windows 7 (as the new configuration is pretty powerful). So, from the boot menu Windows XP was replaced by Windows 7 but still Ubuntu stays there and I can't figure out how to delete it.

After this upgrade, I am able to access the windows partition, and add remove files in the same.Today, I tried booting into my windows partition and I was unable to boot into it. My laptop tried to boot into it, but crashed and came back to the grub selection screen...I did not have this issue previously, with other Linux installations..
View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm installing Ubuntu 10.04 for a friend, dual booting it with windows vista. The installation was going just fine up until the 4th step- partitioning the drives. After designating space for vista and ubuntu and running it, it popped up the window and displayed 0%... for the next hour. After looking around on ubuntu forums for a solution, I tried manually partitioning the drives in vista. Vista wouldn't let me, saying that access was denied. I tried using gparted next, which had an error with it as well. Does anyone know what i can do to work around this?

I have been using ubuntu on my laptop for some time now, and recently got a new 2TB hard drive for my desktop. I cloned the old hard drive to the new one, and decided to install ubuntu onto a third drive. The third drive was IDE, the new one is SATA. I disconnected the other hard drive, and so my current set up is a SATA drive with Windows 7, and an IDE drive with Ubuntu (11.04 of course)
Well, I am unable to dual boot between the two, unfortunately, and would like to figure out how. I would like to say the problem is with Windows, since that is the primary drive. No GRUB shows up upon booting when both drives are plugged in, and the Windows Bootloader does not show my installation of Ubuntu, instead it goes right to Windows.
