Some time ago I read that it's possible to install ubuntu in a sort of "live mode", so that when you reboot the machine, no change has been written to the disk. Anyone knows how to do that?
View 9 RepliesI installed ubuntu 9.10/9.04 on my usb key as live image couple of time. I have trouble when I try to install wine on my usb key. I am wondering what is the difference if I install my ubuntu into my usb key directly? will that be slower compared with live CD mode? I guess live CD mode may use memory as part of harddisk to save temepory files and normal usb linux installation won't do this for me. Is this true?
If so, do I have a choice to point my tmp directory to system memory area?
Tried to install 10.4 Beta2 on my testing machine. Boots but then splash screen starts scrolling really fast though I can notice that 5 dots are moving so no hanging. It takes quite a while and then black screen appears (also scrolling) and I cannot read what's there; last line looks like a prompt. Alt-Ctrl-Del reboots the machine. So I cannot even enter Live mode.
This machine is about 7-8 y.o. P4 2.4GHz (i686) on Asus P4S333/c, 2.5GB ram, GeForce3-Ti200, latest bios 2003 but runs any Linux (I tried) and FreeBSD 9-CURRENT perfectly (Even win7 is installable...but runs badly). On newer machine same CD works fine. The machine is AthlonX2 2.3GHz on Asus M3N78-vm, 4GB ram, onboard chip GeForce8200, HDDs, DVD-RW - all SATA (AHCI). What could be wrong with my old machine? Does Ubuntu still support 96xx Nvidia driver?
I am trying to install ubuntu 11.04 on my PC but i couldn't make it to the desktop of Ubuntu 11.04... i'm so in a need of help i've tried CD burning, using USB/flash drive as a bootable media but couldn't make it to install or get a live systemIt boots fine, take a time but it boots than shows the desktop background with log off, volume control and a button which has a arrow sign i think its an network button and a mouse which i can move freely....i cant even click on those buttons which i can see in upper right corner, and its ends here nothing happens after that....i tried 100times but in vain..what is happening?? eagerly waiting for the help as i want to stretch my fingers on 11.04

It has a file where it saves the configuration of my computer: casper-rw
But if I boot this USB flash drive in another computer I would like to do it in a fresh way, that is, without loading the configuration of my computer (saved in the casper-rw file). For example, in Puppy Linux this can be done easily, just putting pfix=ram in a boot option of syslinux.cfg and selecting this option when booting.
I think this is important because I think that otherwise the Ubuntu (at least in some cases) cannot open if used in a computer different to the one where casper-rw was configured. It happens to me that I cannot run Ubuntu with my pendrive when inserted in a different computer (I think the reason is what I've said).
When I mount Debian 8 live into VMWare Player 7.1.2 64bit, it works awesome with and without graphics acceleration enabled i.e I can get into the desktop and all that.
But, when I installed it, the reboot is just a blank screen. I am not sure how I can proceed from now.
I am on Windows 7, 64bit Ultimate.
As you probably know Debian LIVE ISOs is not (U)EFI bootable since there is no EFI bootloader on them. I need to boot usb for uefi mode...
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an old Dell Inspiron 8200 which I use for doing my CCNA study on. I installed Ubuntu 9.10 and it the cairo dock, all was running great, a little sluggish at times but thaht was down to the integrated display adaptor, no problem. I then decided to try out Open Suse but didnt like it so reformatted the whole disk back to Ubuntu then my problems started.
After going through the installation, I found the computer would only boot in the live CD mode, no files were copied. I then reformatted back to Windows XP and try top set up a dual boot system but the same results!, no data on my hard drive from Ubuntu!!. I then installed a new hard drive and tried a new dual boot installation but with the same results, what is stopping the machine form installing Ubuntu
So I decided to try Ubuntu from a live USB drive 10.04 LTS on my Toshiba laptop as the windows Vista SP2 was running really slow. I liked it and clicked on the install icon. From there I set it for duel boot and off it went. The install worked great. I then downloaded the startup manager and changed the start up to be default of windows loader. Now when it boots into windows it goes to the windows recovery thing and won't start windows.

Is there a consumer version of Ubuntu available for regular people to use? I searched on the fourms and any post about "cannot display this mode" advises users to edit configuration files, or go into command line mode... what is this, 1991?
What is the real solution to this? Or is Ubuntu not made for consumer users? What other options do I have besides Mandrake?
The Ubuntu screenshots looks swell, nice graphic design of the user interface, pretty, but they should make the installer/live CD actually work like any other OS in 2010 first tho'.
Is there any possible way to keep my CPU frequency scaling on PERFORMANCE mode through a reboot? Ubuntu likes to default it back to ONDEMAND all the time.

After searching through forums, I could finally fix it.I'm not sure what exactly fixed it. I first changed the window manager to metacity. Run the following command:Code:sudo nvidia-xconfig --composite --render-accel --add-argb-glx-visualsAnd then changed window manager to compiz and desktop effects could be enabled.The problem is, everytime I reboot, its again running in low graphics mode, desktop effects cannot be enabled, and I have to do all the troubleshooting again! Any idea how to permanently fix this?EDIT: I found that the graphics is reset even without typing the command everytime. But I still have to switch back and forth from compiz window manager to set it all right!

Installation program correctly initializes graphics - all installation completes with automatic configuration - gives no option for sax2 to run. Then Suse does not comes up or the x does not comes up or display is not showing anything. I can switch to Vista and Vista boots works from grub menu. How can I test and configure graphics and monitor before installer boots the system?

Just done my first ubuntu 10.04 install on a hp pavilion a320a, the install seems to have went well, though while it is shutting down and before rebooting the following error appears across the screen:

Before this error appears at the bottom of the screen the error scrolls on the screen with a different number at the beginning of the error where 16866 etc (different number each line) remainder of the error remains the same maybe different sector number but not sure, there is way too many to write down in the time they are on the screen.

On reboot after about a minute it gives the error.We've tried letting GRUB manually configure itself at the end of the install before we reboot and we've also pointed it to /dev/sba partition which is what should be the boot partition.In the code tag it's ALERT! /dev/mapper/mysql(one)-root.... the L and 1 look the same.I've got 3 of these server to get setup and running as part of our back end and network restructuring and have been stuck at this point on the first one since Friday.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 in November 2010 and used the windows installer to install it next to my Windows 7 OS. I have a Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. I am a beginner user and only Ubuntu when I need to run the terminal and text editor to create and test simple C++ files. Today, the install manager requested that I install critical updates so I left the default selected files and upgraded. The it asked to restart the system so I said yes. When it restarts it asks which OS to load:
1. Windows 7
2. Ubuntu
So I select Ubuntu then it displays some message about NTFS and quickly reboots (so i can't get to read the remaining message) the PC again. Uusually it would ask me to select the version of Ubuntu to load. Now my PC will only laod up Windows 7 so I can't get back into Ubuntu to dianose the problem.
I'm on an HP Pavillion dv1000 laptop. I used a live CD to install Ubuntu 10.10 to an external USB hard drive. The install completed successfully, but after a reboot I am stuck on a black screen with a white cursor. Before that I see nothing but the initial HP startup screen. I am able to run the live CD without problems, and I have been running Ubuntu from a 4GB thumb drive (which I installed on using the same live CD that I used to install on my current external hard drive). I had no problems whatsoever running from the CD or thumb drive, so I can't figure out why the external hard drive would be so different.
View 7 Replies View RelatedBeing a former user of Fedora, i decided I'd like to give Ubuntu a try and install so i could switch from a windows environment for ruby on rails development.I downloaded the 10.10 ISO and burned the image to a DVD-RW (a cheap one) at 4xI'm deployed in afghanistan right now, and the only decent internet connection i have is in my office (i work in the network administration/operations office as a NETOPS NCO) and even then my downloads rarely exceed 50kbps. I also don't really have the best pick when it comes to writable media, i'm stuck with imation "plus" cd-r's and dvd-rw's.
After i burned the image to disc, i deleted the iso from my computer since i'm genereally not suppossed to keep personal files on work computers.When i boot to the disc it takes about 45 minutes on average to load into the live environment to do the install or try ubuntu, if i select try ubuntu it's another 10 minutes before it's done loading.The install is even slower, generally takes several hours to complete the install, once the install is complete and i select ubuntu in grub, i get a { DRDY ERR } ru When it tries to load ubuntu and kicks me back into the shell. Nothing appears to be wrong with my hard drive, checkdisk finds nothing.

I decided to put a copy of Ubuntu 11.04 on a USB stick. Downloaded the image file and USB installer and built the stick with no problems. I REALLY don't like the new interface, so I went to the login screen tool and changed the login to come up in Classic mode. Trouble is, now when I try to bring the system up I'm presented with a log-in screen that asks for a user name and password. Since I'm using a live image (akin to a live CD) I don't have any user name or password established. Are there defaults that will allow me to log in? Or do I have to recreate the installation and create a user account that will let me log in?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI had ubuntu running just fine on another computer, but had to move things around to make Windows7 run better. So after backing up Home, I switched hard drives, pulled the video card, and adjusted RAM, I tried booting up. The computer found all the changes and did its thing. But then it hung with a blank screen. I figured that it didn't recongnize the video driver for this computer, or something, so I did a fresh install with 9.10 to start over from scratch. The boot up went great, and finished completely. I made a few changes to the desktop, and loaded in my archived firefox bookmarks and evolution files. After rebooting, the first ubuntu logo came up, but then the blank screen, with no drum sounds. I tried a few more times rebooting and hitting esc, but I don't know what I am doing at that menu. I also tried the F1 option, but again, I don't know anything. One other time I was able to boot into ubuntu all the way when I was hitting esc slowing (waiting) and somehow was able to get the login and the desktop just fine. I haven't been able to get that to happen again.
Can someone walk me through the steps to troubleshoot this? I don't know any terminal jargon or commands, and haven't really got a clue, but I really want to learn and figure this out. I don't even know how to go in from the command line to see what my system specs or video specs are to tell you.
Using Ubuntu and any Linux OS. I installed Ubuntu using the Wubi installer. Everything went fine. When the install wizard completed and asked to Reboot Now, I did. When my computer rebooted, the Windows Boot Manager doesn't appear and it goes straight to Windows.
I'm using 32 bit Vista and have an AMD Athlon X2 Dual Core Processor 5000+. When using Wubi, the download defaults to the AMD 64 version and that is what I have installed.
I installed Kubuntu 8.04.2 Live CD on a USB flash drive using a software program called Unetbootin (from Gentoo), and I can successfully boot into the OS with no problem but I am not able to save any changes such as preferences, because once I reboot, everything I changed or installed is lost. I guess this is because the OS is dumped into RAM and all of my changes were made in RAM instead of the USB flash drive.
My question would be is there a way (keeping my present configuration) I can save any changes to the USB flash drive so that when I reboot, the changes will stick?
Is there any way when booting the LiveCD of Ubuntu 11.04 to force the use of classic mode, even if the computer meets the requirements to use Unity and would otherwise start Unity? Is there a kernel parameter that would do this? In searching, all I can find is the selection during login, but this seems to only show up after a full installation, I want to do this in the Live CD environment.
