I have a Dell Inspiron 3800 laptop with a 30 GB HD; every distro of Ubuntu I have tried to install on the HD fails or makes the laptop crash. With my latest attempt, using Lubuntu 11.04, I was able to boot to the live CD, but I keep running into some form of system crash; I have over 256 MB of Ram on it, so it should not be a RAM issue according to the documentation.
View 1 RepliesI've just installed brand new Debian 6 on an oldish Dell Inspiron 5160 laptop. This features an XGI Volari XP5 video card, which I can see reported in /var/log/Xorg.0.log.
When Debian boots it will only run in command line mode. Running startx hangs up the whole system and just displays a black screen with a few vertical stripes in different colours of dark green.
the default vesa driver for X.org doesn't play very well with the XGI video card.
I've tried running
X -configure
then
X -config /root/xorg.conf.new
This correctly detects the XGI Volari XP5 card (if you look through the xorg.conf) but running the second X command still hangs up the system.
X runs fine under Knoppix, but most recent Ubuntu distros I've tried actually hung up after the initial text-based startup section, so presumably died as soon as X started up. Debian's graphical installer worked fine, however.
I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 on a dell Inspiron laptop. When I choose the install option in the boot menu it loads my to a log in screen. but Ubuntu has never been installed in my laptop.

I know that I have to have acpi=off to work, and got Linux Mint 7 installed from the live cd but want Xubuntu. The Xubuntu 9.1 live CD works fine as long as I put the acpi=off parameters in the boot string, and I check the additional options just to be sure. But after install I cannot even get into the grub, it says grub loading for a split second then blinking cursor

I use it on a Dell Inspiron Mini 9 netbook (that boots Mac OS X from its SSD). An ubuntu persistent liveusb works just great for occasional linux development and testing, but ubuntu 9.10 will be EOL next year, and I want to stay current.

After I've booted the liveusb, under the network menu I see this:

A menu appears that looks like a PCI card with a lock on it. I select the only item under that menu, "Install Drivers". This gives a dialog that says "No proprietary drivers are in use on this system. Proprietary drivers do not have public source code..." etc. Under Ubuntu 9.10, I could at this point select "Broadcom STA wireless driver" and click the "Activate" button, and it would work. So I did that in 10.04.1.
It says, "Downloading and installing driver..."
While it's doing this, the "kerneloops" menu item appears. Then a dialog that says,
Sorry, the package "bcmwl-kernel-source 5.60.48.36 +bdcom-0ubuntu3" failed to install or upgrade.
Then another dialog that says
SystemError: installArchives() failed.
What the heck is happening here?
Well, it turns out that the error messages are wrong. I restarted and the DM9/ubuntu 10.04.1 was able to connect to the wireless network.
tl;dr: Proprietary wireless driver installation works, but it claims that it doesn't.
Just curious, I have an Acer T180 that came with a gig of ram, I purchased an additional stick of ram a little while ago (2 gigs in total) System runs very good but I find it's very sluggish when I'm running VirtualBox.
What's the best processor I can replace the one I have with that will be compatible with my motherboard? The processor I have now is 2.4 ghz I believe.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have been having an unusually fraught time trying to installing Linux on a new box (Dell Precision 5500, Nvidia FX 3800 graphics), x64_86. After following Leigh123Linux's recommended method for disabling Nouveau, I was able to verify that the nvidia module was loaded, Nouveau was not, but the system nevertheless hung at boot. As a last resort I downgraded the graphics card, replacing the FX3800 with an FX1800, et voila!, the drivers found the card and all was it should be, with no changes to the system configuration. This is a bit mysterious as the FX 3800 is purportedly a supported card. The only sign that anything may have been amiss during the installation was the missing firmware warnings:
W: Possible missing firmware aic94xx-seq.fw for module aic94xx.ko
W: Possible missing firmware ql8100_fw.bin for module qla2xxx.ko
However, it's not clear that this is of any consequence. For now, my FX 3800 is back in its anti-static bag for the foreseeable future..
I have been trying to resolve this issue and it's bewildering me... I have been trying to do the install on Ubuntu Netbook Remix (UNR) and after setting up the keyboard language the installer locks up. The error message mentions it was unable to launch Gparted as it crashed.
I have also tried to launch Gparted from the system admin apps and Gparted will show it is trying to read the hard drives and then crashes. I have tried updating Gparted from the repo's and on launching it also crashes too.
I'm trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 on my custom tower. The live CD loads, I select Install Ubuntu, I get to the screen with the system checks, I hit install and... crash.
I'm guessing it's a hardware issue as I have it installed on 3 other computers no problem. Here are my specs code...
I've tried the 64bit and 32 bit versions, same thing. I tried installing it with Wubi, I reboot and it crashes shortly into the install. Is any of this hardware incompatible? Any suggestions I can try?
Want to repartition/resize existing 1/2 full 60MB sda2 currently containing NTFS. The "Allocate drive space" does not seem to have a resize option (the 10.04 docs claim there was a resize option here). When I run 10.10 gparted in live mode gparted crashes for unknown reason before it even finishes scanning the disk. Am I missing something here? (Never tried to resize an ntfs part. with Ubuntu.) The laptop I am installing this on currently has XP that crashes a lot for unknown reasons.
View 9 Replies View RelatedHave a HP Proliant DL380 which had Ubuntu installed. Have not used it for about 6 months but wanted to resurrect the machine. Switched it on and it would not boot. Went through the usual boot load then would freeze with a flashing scroll and caps lock. Thought I would just re install and recreate the partions but now when I try to install Ubuntu 9 from an offical disc I get the same error. I have attached a screen shot (well photo).
View 3 Replies View RelatedI was trying to fix gparted (it was crashing whenever it started) and then when I would type my password in the login screen, the screen would flash back and then the login screen would come back. If I logged in in a terminal and then did startx, it would just show a black screen. I figured it was broken. I made an Ubuntu 10.10 liveCD and booted it up and clicked on the installer thing and then it froze and an error thing popped up saying Parted crashed.
Essentially what I need to do is install Ubuntu without using the partition GUI.Can I try to find a thing that will let me make an empty EXT4 partition and then a thing to let me install Ubuntu to it?
I am facing some issues with my openSUSE 11.2 installtion. Yesterday i installed win 7 so the grub is now wiped out. I have also taken mbr backup in USB. I tried following things to make things work.[/HTML]
1) Repair using openSUSE DVD booted using DVD then automatic repair but it couldn't find any root partition. After showing error that no root partition found it crashes to a blue screen with advanced configurations from there i was able to use shell but cant see and mount any linux partitions. i tried mounting the root partition it gave the error :"please load module ext4dev before mounting" how can i install grub without losing my present installations.
2) Tried booting with Ubuntu & kubuntu 8.04 live cd .. both gave a error and refused to boot. then tried openSolaris which failed to detect the USB drive so couldnt restore the GRUB to /dev/hda.
I have just reinstalled testing on a Samsung Q30 and I cant get X to start. I am just left with a blank screen and ctrl+alt+Fn does nothing. I had a previous install of testing that worked fine but it might have been running a previous version of the kernel, or I had installed a bug fix to do with 915resoultion that I can't remember about. Booting off a Slax live cd works fine but I have had similar problems with Knoppix and Ubuntu.
I am running LXDE but I previously tried Gnome and had the same problem. Running xander displays cant open display Running dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg returns nothing, as does Xfree86 -configure There is no /etc/X11/xorg.conf or installed by default, I have tried running startx with a custom xorg.conf and the automatically generated one from -configure. The automatic one did not include any resolutions and was configured for a dual head set up although there was only one monitor connected.

But I have tried following the bug fixes on that site and I have had no luck.

When I attempt to install the OS on my PC, the install software crashes immediately after I select US-English on the first screen. I'm copying the entire error report below. My system is configured as follows: Gigabyte P35-DS3R motherboard with 4G RAM. (FYI, I'm using the 32-bit LiveCD just because I may need a 32-bit OS for some purposes. I know this means I may not be able to use all of my RAM.) There are 3 500G hard drives connected to the computer. /dev/sda and /dev/sdb are RAID-1 mirrors via the on-motherboard ICH9R RAID chip. The logical partitions show up as /dev/dm-1, /dev/dm-2, /dev/dm-3, /dev/dm-4, and /dev/dm-5. When I type `fdisk -l`, I can see sda, sdb, and dm-* all separately. (I can provide the full output of `fdisk` if anybody wants to see it.)
/dev/sdc is a standalone drive without RAID.
I want to install Fedora on /dev/dm-2 with swap on /dev/dm-5. Currently, /dev/dm-1 and /dev/sdc2 each contain a separate installation of WinXP. I suspect the problem is with detecting RAID, thus I have deleted most of the error report that doesn't seem to concern storage detection.

i cannot see anywhere that i have my old wlan0 connection configured. i have done this before, YEARS ago and my config survived many upgrades, but i have settled into a bit of a complacency and long since forgot how to amend this.
I have a old Dell Inspiron Laptop I would like to use, but it dosent have awhole lot of memory 160megs worth and tried running the live cd of Ubuntu and Lubuntu and all i get on the screen is a blinking cursor. It give me the option to boot off the cd but that is where it stops.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm using OpenSUSE since vesrion 10.x and I never have problems to install latest version of OpenSUSE. Last week end I decided to upgrade my Laptop (Dell Inspiron 1520) from version 11.3 to version 11.4. I performed clean install (I have separate home partition so I have no problems with my info) but when setup goes to last step "Prepare first time automatic configuration" (top progress bar shows 3% and bottom progress bar shows 10%) my laptop hangs and Capslock Led and the led next to it start blinking together. I tried 3 times and every time the same thing happened. After that I installed 11.3 again (without problems) and then I tried to run upgrade to 11.4 from 11.4 DVD. Upgrade finished successfully but when openSUSE tries to start my laptop hangs in the same way as before . So I decided to go back to 11.3 and I did it without problems even I've upgraded KDE to 4.6 successfully.

The problem I faced my last installation with fedora 11 was that I could not get the wireless installed and I was unsuccessful in installing the wireless drivers using ndis wrapper or b43-legacy or something.

I had a problem with not being able to get wireless working, and found out that I had to activate the Broadcom STA driver which lead to a crash. Now I've rebooted, everytime I try to install I get 'SystemError() InstallArchives' or the authenticate box hangs. Is there another way to install these drivers?
