General :: Loading TomTom Nav 5 Maps To IPAQ
Jul 14, 2011Using Linux and have an IPAQ that would like to get TomTom Navigator 5 running on. I've loaded TTN 5 exe on the IPAQ, but have not been able to get the maps loaded. The CD has the files listed as .CAB files, and I have used "cabextract" to extract those files to a directory in Linux. When I use the "file" command, I get that the extracted files are "Microsoft WinCE install header, architecture independent, 10 files, 1 registry file". Do not need TTN5 running on the PC, just want it on the IPAQ. The maps will be on an SD card as is the TTN5 exe. Still get "no maps found" error from TT5 on IPAQ with all the files extracted from one region map put onto the SD card.

Jan 14, 2010Just curious, I have an Acer T180 that came with a gig of ram, I purchased an additional stick of ram a little while ago (2 gigs in total) System runs very good but I find it's very sluggish when I'm running VirtualBox.
What's the best processor I can replace the one I have with that will be compatible with my motherboard? The processor I have now is 2.4 ghz I believe.
Fedora Hardware :: Nvidia FX 3800 Not Recognized In FC12?
Jan 7, 2010I have been having an unusually fraught time trying to installing Linux on a new box (Dell Precision 5500, Nvidia FX 3800 graphics), x64_86. After following Leigh123Linux's recommended method for disabling Nouveau, I was able to verify that the nvidia module was loaded, Nouveau was not, but the system nevertheless hung at boot. As a last resort I downgraded the graphics card, replacing the FX3800 with an FX1800, et voila!, the drivers found the card and all was it should be, with no changes to the system configuration. This is a bit mysterious as the FX 3800 is purportedly a supported card. The only sign that anything may have been amiss during the installation was the missing firmware warnings:
W: Possible missing firmware aic94xx-seq.fw for module aic94xx.ko
W: Possible missing firmware ql8100_fw.bin for module qla2xxx.ko
However, it's not clear that this is of any consequence. For now, my FX 3800 is back in its anti-static bag for the foreseeable future..

With my latest attempt, using Lubuntu 11.04, I was able to boot to the live CD, but I keep running into some form of system crash; I have over 256 MB of Ram on it, so it should not be a RAM issue according to the documentation.

Why I would need such an outlandish thing is that after I was forced to do a system reinstall thus losing my previous conf files I've been trying to reinstall my saa7134 tvcard. Normally i2c should handle the problem but it won't detect it. So I have a nice little script I found and modified to find the correct card although it is a bit tedious to run:

I want to have a separate script that will unload the modules loaded in this script. However, the pacmd unload-module only accepts the index number, not the name. I have no way of knowing what the index numbers will be as they change each time, so I've got stuck writing the script.

Jan 21, 2010I installed Redhat nash version 5.1.19.6 with kernel 2.6.18-128.el5-xen-i686 on a Dell Inspiron 1300 with Broadcom BCM4401 (eth0/LAN) and BCM4318 (eth1/WLAN). eth0 is working fine, but eth1 was causing trouble. After some difficulties with missing packages I managed to install ndiswrapper, blacklisted module bcm43xx in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist and removed it, loaded module ndiswrapper and had connection. But after reboot module bcm43xx was again loaded. So blacklisting does not seem to work.And additionally strange to me, I cannot unload module bcm43xx anymore. And if I load ndiswrapper driver bcm43xx is still used as the terminal command 'dmesg' is showing me in the system log, while ndiswrapper was used when the connection was once and only once established

Sometimes if I load/unload the atl1c module a few times the link will come up, but it seems the module is not even being loaded at boot and I have to modprobe it just to see the NIC.

Jan 5, 2010I recently received a used laptop that I was going to use for my kids, a Compaq Presario 2100. Everything went fine on the install, however I could not get the WiFi to work. The internal card, a Broadcom BCM4306, was attempting to use the b43legacy drivers, which I understand to be the native driver for this card, but would get all sorts of strange errors in 'dmesg', and would never get a solid connection.
After fiddling with this for 2 days, and reading countless troubleshooting guides, I finally gave up and decided to get it working with ndiswrapper. Everything worked perfect, except I can only get it to work if I first load b43legacy, then load ndiswrapper, then unload b43legacy. If I blacklist b43legacy, and just load ndiswrapper, iwconfig does not report a wlan0.
I ran across this posting, and decided to try this, but it also did not work. Plus, with this file in place, any attempt to use modprobe would complain about every line of that file.

The bug is well know which makes the hard disk head to park often (2-3 times per minute) that's dangerous for the drive in the long term and annoying for me (click-click-click).I found out the "ugly-fix" for old Ubuntu version which was :hdparm -B 254 /dev/sda instead of 128. It works. The problem is that it doesn't remains (when restart/standby/ac connection-disconnection).I found a script well known too :Code:1) make a file named "99-hdd-spin-fix.sh". The important thing is starting with "99".2) make sure the file contains the following 2 lines (fix it if you have PATA HDD):

Ubuntu :: Terminal Says It "Cannot Unload Module Vboxdrv"?
May 1, 2010I'm having problems with Screen and VirtualBox, and the problems seem similar as if crucial components have vanished. Here is the screen issue and the last three posts are me. Basically, the solutions have been temporary so far. I changed the mode and group of /var/run/screen like the OP said but have not shutdown yet, so I don't know if that's a permanent solution yet. The other two temporary solutions didn't prove to be temporary until I shutdown and came back several hours later. Screen was still working after a reboot.
The same thing is happening with VBox: after doing what VBox tells me to do, the solution was temporary, and the same problem popped up after the next boot. Here are similar problems: I made sure I was in the vboxusers group. I added the module like the first one said, and it took me to another level of malfunction. I didn't take a screenshot or make a note of the first error message, but I've attached the second. Also, sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup did not work this time after adding the module. Like the first link said, vboxdrv didn't exist for him or her, so maybe my problem is similar. My terminal says it "Cannot unload module vboxdrv".

Oct 12, 2010My Ubuntu system is occasionally becoming very sluggish. I'm running many things simultaneously and it's very difficult to tell which program is the culprit.
I suspect that the sluggishness is due to disk activity since the CPU usage is consistently under 50% on each of the 4 cores of the CPU, and over 30% of the 6GB of RAM are free.
Is there a tool that can show me in real time the number of disk IO operations per second and the amount of data read/written per second? Can all this info be broken down and displayed per process?

Nov 4, 2009I'm using my Linux (SLES 10) server as a File Server at this point. I need to set File Permissions to nested folders differently to different groups. For example:

I've been using Webmin and Putty to set permissions but Putty only allows me the Default Group, it won't allow me to set several groups on the same directory. Webmin seems to allow me to add multiple groups (Webmin --> Others --> File Manager --> Info & ACL tab will provide extended abilities) but when I add multiple groups, they don't seem to take effect? I'm wondering if my setup at the 'Share' level or at the hierarchy of my folder structure (unix based) needs to be set specifically?

I want efficiency, I need to be able to customise what I need to in order to perform development tasks.I guess this could be a long list, but - I don't have practical working knowledge of the Linux OS, nor how it "compares" to Windows (excuse my faux pas). I'm obviously willing to learn, but I'm far, far more keen to just... continue interface development, just on Linux instead of Windows.

If I take a program covered under the GNU license, first of all I have the right to get the source code. Second, I can modify it at will. Third, I can redistribute it as will too but the new code will necessarily will have the same GNU license. This made me wonder how people actually can charge for software derived from Linux, for instance, Red Hat. Well, my impression is that they really make profit only out of services. In this thread [URL] I think I found a lot of confusion, even from a moderator (not intended to offend). Red Hat is based on Linux and it is necessarily covered under GNU. Somebody probably bought the program from RHE and can make it available at no cost.

Mainly asking what kind of user you consider the distro to be for (beginners, advanced, total newb, whatever), and whether you think they offer as much to an extremely experienced user as they would to a newb.Those are my two favorite distros, and I really like Mandriva a lot. I'm trying to pick one to stick with throughout, but I'm not really sure if Mandriva is too automated and Windows-user oriented like Ubuntu (I haven't really delved into the deeper aspects of Linux so I have zero experience in this area now). This might sound a little elitist but I don't want to be using Mandriva and just be automatically dismissed as a newb on first impression just because I'm using Mandriva (although admittedly I am a bit of a newb at the moment, I don't plan on staying one).
