Ubuntu Installation :: Doesn't Install - Uninstall ?
Aug 14, 2010
I installed ubuntu by using Wubi to try it out. When I restatered and booted up ubuntu it said claimed to be finishing up installations which was taking nearly 1.5 hours of getting nowhere before I got frustrated and shut it off. I wen't back on windows to see if a re installation would be better. But my computer didn't seem to agree on that and wouldn't uninstall it. So I manually deleted the files myself. Now when I start up my computer I still see the choice to boot up kubuntu but yet there is no kubuntu if I select it. Any ideas how to get rid of the selection and why wubi didn't work? Not even live CD's are working on my computer.

I recently installed ubuntu 11.04 on my computer and all had been going good except for this little snag.here's the thing :whenever i try to install something using the software center, the file doesn't get downloaded and the progress bar says "applying changes" which obviously goes on for infinity.I read somewhere that another guy had been experiencing similar problems after installing "ubuntu restricted extras" (codecs) and he solved it by uninstalling the codecs.I noticed that even my last successful install was those codecs.problem is, my s/w center doesn't even uninstall them.i don't know any other way to install apps nor can i figure out how to reinstall s/w center.

My problem started with DVDrip and I mad an apt-on-cd DVD and installed from there rather than download the packages for my twop systems running karmic. I don't know what has happened but now if I try to install/upgrade/remove anything i get the following.
Code:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
libevent-execflow-perl: Depends: libanyevent-perl but it is not going to be installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution).

I have developed a simple tool to easily uninstall any Ubuntu (or other Linux distro) from an Ubuntu live-CD.It works very well for any Linux installed on a separate partition. Now I am wondering if it is possible to add it the possibility to uninstall a Wubi installation. For the moment, I know how to detect a Wubi install (just need to detect a /ubuntu/disks/root.disk file). Then, all tutos I found use Windows tools, but this "How do I manually uninstall Wubi?" paragraph gives clues to do it from a live-CD :- Remove C:ubuntu and C:wubildr* : ok- remove Ubuntu from the Windows bootloader : do you know how to do this from a live-CD for Vista and Seven ?- remove Ubuntu from the registry : do you know how to do this from a live-CD

When I try to remove Evolution Mail in the Software Center it just thinks and never begins to uninstall. When I try to force remove from Terminal it says: "Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?"
I have looked everywhere I know of, being a new Linux user, trying to find where the process may still be running or being used from and I do not know where to go from here.

About 3-4 years ago I installed a new harddrive in my computer (XP Pro) and moved the old system disk drive to be secondary. I installed Grub and partitioned it in half. I installed Fedora on one partition and installed XP on the other. Now I want to keep the XP and replace the Fedora with another Linux like Ubuntu or Mint to try them out. I am not sure what I need to do to replace the Fedora and keep XP. Could someone give some idea how this would be done? I don't remember exactly how I did it at the time or what tools I had used or what I will need.

Installed Debian Lenny on a Pentium 3 with 256 MB of ram and a 10GB hard drive. Used the "Expert Graphical" from the install menu. I did not choose any software packages when prompted from the list (the list with the checkboxes next to server, desktop ECT) because I wanted to choose individual packages to install afterwards. Had no issues, computer rebooted and I got to a login prompt.
Logged in as root, I ran "apt-get install" and installed gedit, blackbox from my main window manager, gdm, iceweasel and synaptic (some of these I installed after editing the sources.list file with more repositories.)
All of this is great, even though this computer is old.. I have a nice box to do internet browsing and IRC.
Here is what I do not understand, and I have never seen before in Linux. When I try to install Open Office, synaptic package manager says it "needs to uninstall iceweasel" browser and a few other files and programs. Also this happens if I try to install VLC player. Looks like the reasoning is because some applications are not compatible with others. Is this new? Again, I have never seen this before in Linux.

I am new to Debian. I have installed Debian on sda1, grub installed in /dev/sda . /dev/sda6 is SalixOs.
My fdisk -l report is this code...
I boot from sda, Debian recognised windows Xp installed on sdb1, but when I choose to boot from it, it simply reboots.
What could be the reason ? I am a newbie, please be patient with me.
I have solve the problem by installing EasyBCD in WinXp and added the Linux entries to it and booting from sdb.(changed in BIOS)
So, is it possible to uninstall GRUB-2 and install GRUB-Legacy ? Would it work on Debian-Squeeze ?

I am installing Ubuntu Server 10.10 on and old Dell Laptop. The network connection is an Xircom PCMCIA card.During install, the computer sees and interacts via the network just fine. For example, I can ping the gateway. Also, the command "lspcmcia" works and show the Xircom card. When I reboot, however, there is no network access, and the "lspcmcia" command is not there. When I try "lspcmcia" the OS helpfully tells me that I can "apt-get" pcmciautils, but, without network access, that fails.I tried adding the install cdrom to apt using "apt-cdrom" and then tried to "apt-get" pcmciautils and it got further, installing some dependencies, but acted like it still was unable to locate the pcmciautils package.

I cannot uninstall Firefox, nor can I uninstall Chromium; one always stays if the other is uninstalled. For example, if I remove Firefox, Chromium will appear in its place and vice versa. This has got to be one of the weirdest bugs I've ever seen on Ubuntu! So, how can I uninstall both web browsers?

I'm trying to dual boot 9.10 with Vista on an HP Pavilion Slimline (AMD64). I've tried both booting from a disk and using Wubi, and neither has worked. Booting from the disk takes me through the screen where I can choose to try Ubuntu without installing, but after selecting that, the desktop didn't load, the screen just went to black.
I decided to try Wubi, and it went well enough. Everything in windows worked, and upon rebooting, it was able to finish checking the installation. After one more reboot, I selected Ubuntu from the Windows boot manager, and then the grub command prompt appears. I can't seem do anything after that except reboot.
I have no idea what's going on with this computer.

The title says it all. I'm trying to install Ubuntu 9.10 on my PS3, but the keyboard isn't typing. I can't complete the install, because I can't type anything. I've followed all the steps properly, everything goes smoothly, the mouse works just fine, and the capslock and numlock lights light up on the keyboard, and toggle when I press the corresponding buttons. The keyboard even works at the kboot prompt. After I choose the partition to use, I have to enter my information to continue. Without being able to type, I can't progress. The keyboard obviously works, since I can type just fine at the kboot prompt. This one's got me scratching my head. I'm going to try a 9.04 cd tomorrow, see if that works, but I was really hoping to get 9.10 on there.

has anybody tried 10.10 on their PS3 (FW 3.15)? I first ran an update from 10.04 (which was working fine, including ext4 FS), and upon rebooting after the update, all I had was a black screen after PetitBoot. I then tried to do a clean install with the 10.10 PPC+PS3 Alternate CD, but same black screen after selecting any type of install from CD in PetitBoot. I then installed the OtherOS that's on the 10.10 CD (KBoot); same black screen. Went back to PetitBoot and tried the PS3 desktop 10.10 CD; same problem. I was almost ready to give up and reinstall 10.04 when I thought of using the "linux-old" option in PetitBoot. This loaded the newly upgraded Ubuntu 10.10 on my HD, with the difference that it's using kernel 2.6.32 instead of 2.6.35. This works fine. So here's my question (at last ): was the PS3 port of 10.10 tested by anyone before being pushed as a release on cdimage.ubuntu.com, or is there an incompatibility with kernel 2.6.35 that was never noticed, except for here where it didn't seem to go anywhere: [URL]? If I'm the only one left on earth with firmware 3.15 and interested in Ubuntu on PS3 at this point.

I'm trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 from a USB stick but neither the install nor the LiveCD will recognise my Hard Disk Drive. They only recognise the USB stick and report that install cannot proceed without at least 2.6GB freespace (of which of course there isn't on the USB stick).
I've installed Ubuntu on a couple of systems before but this is the most advanced and I'm certainly no expert. It's an ASUS P6X58D-E mobo with two WD600GB SATA3 HDD's setup in RAID1 configuration. It's already running W7Ultimate x64 OK on it's own 150GB partition. Of course I can't even run gparted from the LiveCD to repartition. I suspect the problem is the RAID config, but not sure what to do.

I have Ubuntu 10.04 (32bit) alongside Windows Vista currently. I tried to install Ubuntu 11.04 (64bit) from a bootable USB stick and found out that none of the current partitions are visible.
My PC is a Dell Inspiron 1525 with dual core Pentiums. Here are my partitions. I am reporting all this back from my current, stable Ubuntu 10.04 platform:
Code:
~$ sudo fdisk -l
Disk /dev/sda: 250.1 GB, 250059350016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30401 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes

I am trying to uninstall my LAMP server and my Drupal 7 installation. Unfortunately I cannot find any instructions on uninstalling Druapl from my system. The ones that exist are far too old( < 2008 ) to be relevant. Could someone please direct me how to go about this? Note: I did not use Synaptic for installation. I downloaded the file from the drupal.org site.

Ok, so I tried to run the .deb package to install the Facebook chat plugin for Pidgin, and something got all messed up with that, and now nothing will install or uninstall. Synaptics won't run, Update Manager tells me to try a termianl command that doesn't work, and the Software center doesn't work either. I've attached screenshots of the problems. I've tried to download and reinstall the .deb file, and it still doesn't work.
I wanted to upload one more picture, but it only allows five. The last picture was of the terminal window. Here's what it said.
"Sudo apt-get install f
reading package lists... done
building dependency tree
reading state information... done
E: The package pidgin-facebookchat needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it"

Im new to ubuntu so i may not understand some answers so please bare with me. For a university thing i needed to run java so i installed sun java 6.0. I got an error half way though so i thought nothing of it and went off to do other things. Now when i try and install or uninstall anything i get this message
The package system is broken If you are using third party repositories then disable them, since they are a common source of problems. Now run the following command in a terminal: apt-get install -f
And the details read sun-java6-plugin.

I am installing ubuntu on a Dell m7750n machine that has the KSOD. I have done almost everything I can find to fix it. I was able to remove my data off of it using regedit....
So, I am sick of MS and found linux. I installed unbutu netbook on my netbook and it works like a charm.....
So, I went to install this on my desktop dell.... I have read of the many issue with this...
I was not able to boot from the CDlive as is. I kept getting a black screen with nothing. I then used the f6 to get into grub and then choose f6 to change the load options to load nomodeset and was able to load ubuntu from the drive, not install.
I would like to install ubuntu, but when I click on install from the 'tester' version it will not give me the option to install along side another OS (windows) that I see in the install ubuntu main website in the see how to do it.
I get two options:
Erase and use entire disk
Specify partitions manually (advanced)
Question: Can I install and select my own partitions using: [url]
Or, is there something wrong and I need to get that fixed before I install ubuntu?
Is this a DELL issue or KSOD issue?

I've been using kubuntu from time to time, and one thing that i love was the option to install/uninstall as if it was another common windows application. A few days ago, i downloaded the 10.10 release, and after i executed wubi, i just get 2 option: Full demo and install and learn more So, am I doing something wrong? BTW, i also run wubi with an ISO next to it, but it shows the same window. So, is there a way to install kubuntu as a windows appa again? I've tried google, but everything seems to point that that feature still exists, but i cant find it.

I'm trying to create a 10.04.3 installed with a specific set of packages: nothing obviously special about it, just ubuntu-desktop, a few devel tools, and with a pre-seed file that sets up a few non-default parameters.
Everything works exactly the way I want it to, except for one important detail: the install always pulls packages over the network (and possibly updates to the apt database--it's not always easy to tell, during the install, exactly what it's doing). In any case, it stalls if the network goes away in the middle of the install, and since the install is intended for places with poor, intermittent network connectivity, so this is an issue for me.
I tried doing an install without any network connectivity, and it succeeded, so all the necessary packages are in the ISO. It's only when the network is available that it tries to pull over something (possibly apt files, since that's where the process seems to hang for hours when there is a slow network). So I can install from scratch in 10 minutes when the network is disabled and 2 hours when the network is enabled--and no other changes!
I don't care if the resulting ISO file doesn't fit on a CD (as long as it fits onto a DVD), but I want an ISO that doesn't insist on reaching out over the network during the install.
