Jan 14, 2011I'm a big fan of the NSLU2-Linux project so I've been doing some developments for this platform for the last three years. In order for the end users to test my applications, I initially created an USB image with everything bundled into it. Then, they only had to download the image and decompress (dd) it into an USB pendrive with capacity equal or greater than 4 GB. The fact is that this has brought me lots of problems in the practice since my Web server hardly accepts long file transfers.
Moreover, flash spaces beyond 4GB are wasted. As result, I'm now considering a different approach as I don't know how to do it. Well, I've thought that I could maybe create an USB disk image only with the root file system partition. Then, the first time a script runs, it creates a home partition and formats it into the rest of the space available in the pendrive. There is maybe some command-line alternative to fdisk without having the user to interact during the format process... ??

May 6, 2011I'm trying to install openSuSE 11.4 onto my brand-new Lenovo W520 laptop, using the Intel Rapid Storage Technology (FakeRAID?) controller, ROM version 10.1.0.1008. I have 2 physical 500GB disks configured in a mirror (RAID-1). Everything looks fine, the installation program comes up and asks if I want to use mdadm to manage the RAID, to which I answer yes. I go through the normal setup screens, and select the partition layout that I want (for sake of this post, I'll limit myself to the layout that the system itself recommends).
The problem comes when it becomes time to format the partitions. Somehow the partitioning program gets it into it's head that the root partition is 10TB, not 20GB, and the ext4 partitioning fails in various ways (short reads to sector zero, unable to map using 4096 byte sectors, etc, etc) depending on exactly which partitioning scheme I'm attempting. I pretty much get the same result no matter how I play the partitions, which file systems I use (XFS, ext4, etc [of course, I can't use XFS for /boot...]).
For now I've gone ahead and set myself up using software RAID, since this system is unlikely to become dual-boot with Windows for a few years at least. (As an aside, but as a hint to others, when the installation fails, I end up having to go back into the Intel RAID controller BIOS boot to clear out the entire RAID setup each time it fails - the disks are left in a completely useless state).

Jun 18, 2011trying to manually partition while installing 10.04, unfortunately from an old windows os, which came w/ the computer. i probably shouldn't bother to save it, but i wanted the practice w/ partitioning. the book i'm using is a good one, but maybe too advanced, and didn't specify. when i shrank the old win os into a smaller space on the drive, it gave me the option to check a box for format or leave it unchecked. which should i do, so as not to delete what's already on the drive? and do i mount it anywhere? in /windows, or i think the other option was msdos? what results in each case?

Mar 1, 2010I guess it's time to move up to Ubuntu 9.10 from 9.04 ...unless you would advise me to stay with 9.04. Either way, I would like to do a clean install. I managed to create a separate partition for /home almost a year ago ... now the only thing I want to keep inside /home is one big folder which I already had made a backup copy with several DVDs (larger than 4GB). Besides that large folder, I would like to start everything new. This would be my second time installing and it has been quite awhile. Here are my questions:
1. I know I have backup DVDs in hand. But sometimes DVDs are funky. I would restore my files with DVDs as last resort. So, should I just delete all files and folders (including hidden ones) under /home except a large folder that I would like to keep? If so, can I do that while on a normal gnome session or am I better off doing it while on Live CD?
2. I see a suggestion that when installing Ubuntu, I need to make sure to mount /home but NOT FORMAT IT. Is there a visual tutorial or step-by-step guide showing how to do this?
3. Are there other gotchas like I need to "create" user name the exact same spelling as old user name that is already created under /home on my harddrive?
Server :: Error Formatting Raid On Install With Cent Os5.5 And Ubuntu Sever 10.10?
Dec 7, 2010i have a dell server. its a couple of years old and has a perc 4 raid controller in it. When i do an install it shows the drives configured in the raid 5 configuration. i select the disk and do an auto partition. It goes for about 10min then errors with "error formatting drive volgoup00 the error is serious occurred press enter to reboot" or something like that can remember all the words. It doesn't give any info about the error.
i get the same error on centOs 5.5 and Ubuntu server 10.10
There is a firmware update for the raid controller that i could apply but dell's site was not letting me download it yesterday. Other than that I am not sure what to do. I could try an older version of CentOS 5.4 but i figure someone might tell me how to fix this so i can run the newest version.

I set up and formatted two partitions, one for fat32, and the other with ext3, which appears to format ok, but I can't use it. Both partitions show up and appear to mount, but the ext3 partition won't accept activity (make new folder, copy in files), while the fat32 partition works fine. Both partitions show up ok when I query in terminal "sudo fdisk -l"

Sep 26, 2010I was previously running 10.04 32bit. Recently upgraded my cpu/ram, so figured I'd try 64 bit. On my previous setup, I had / in one partition, /home in another, plus a few other partitions (/backup, etc).
I did the install of 64 bit, but was too scared to point /home in 64bit to the previous /home. After the install, now all those previous partitions/mounts are on /media. I'd like to just point /home at the previous partition. Should I mess with /etc/fstab to do this or will it cause problems? Is the easiest thing to do reinstall, then point the new install to use the pre-existing /home? Wasn't sure if that would cause problems or not. I've backed up most of the previous /home area, so worst case, if it gets blown away, I should be alright.
OpenSUSE Install :: Formatting A External Hard Drive?
Jun 12, 2011What I've done is partition my external hard drive to have 130g for my Windows info. Then putting the 90g towards Linux. I used a live cd on my home computer to format the 90g of Linux. I'm simply wanting something to learn more about from time to time that I can use on my home computer, laptop, fiance's computer, etc. So the formatting went successful. I have linux on the 90g of hard drive that I wanted it on. The problem is this. When I take the live cd out, when I remove my external hard drive from my computer. The home computer (which has Windows) won't boot. It comes up with a error 21. But now when I boot with the external hard drive I use, I make it to the boot menu and can boot from Windows.I need to be able to boot from Windows on this home computer, since my mother and grandparents use this computer quite a bit. I'm not always going to have my ext. hard drive plugged into this computer, so I need some help if you all know now.

Sep 2, 2011Tired of fat32 fragility, I reformatted a 4GB pen-drive as ext4 using Yast's partitioner. I chose format as ext4 and checked fstab options "can be mounted by user", "no access time" and "ordered journaling". I thought that these fstab options would be ineffective since a removable device won't be added to fstab. when I insert the pen-drive it auto-mounts and the folder /media/EMTEC is created (EMTEC is the volume name). The relevant mount entries are:

There's no fstab entry, as it should be, and there is a mtab entry corresponding to the pen-drive, /sde1. However the /media/EMTEC as created (by udev, I suppose) is owned by root, I can't write to it. But if I change (as root) the /etc/EMTEC folder permissions so it belongs to the regular user, i can (obviously) write to it *and* it stays so *between* remounts. Haven't tried a reboot yet. What I'm not sure is if ordered journaling is OK for a pen-drive - or any kind of journaling, for that matter. Or will this significantly decrease flash memory life? Also, the fstab options set in Yast appear to be remembered by whatever creates mtab, as well as /media/EMTEC permissions. Is that so? Where are these settings kept? How does this work?

Ubuntu Installation :: Relocate Home Directory Post Install
Jan 27, 2010I'm trying to relocate my home directory which currently resides at the default, root location /home/user.
My Systems Specs:
Karmic64
Root resides on a Raid0 LVM MD0
NEW Drive resides on Raid0 LVM MD1
I installed a new disk on a LVM(Logical Volume Manager), and now want to move my default home directory to the new location. I did rsync my home directory from the OLD to the NEW. When I do update my /etc/fstab with the NEW home location, I recieve errors upon rebooting, that certainly relate to permission issues, including some from Nautilus that mentions permissions issues...
I also tried to update the USERS/GROUP Manager with the NEW location but after reopening the USERS/GROUP manager, I can see the original location has been reverted back. I can create a new user and succesfully map their home directory to the NEW home location on my MD1 LVM. Any links on home to remap their existing HOME directory to a new location?

May 29, 2010I have 9.04 in my laptop and I want to make a clean install of Lynx.
My home partition is sda7 (ext4), so in the partition step during the install I'm telling the installer to use the partition as ext4 but don't format it (I'm explicitly checking sda6 as / mount point and set to format as ext4).
On the next step I see disabled options regarding the access to my home folder and "Require my password to log in and decrypt my home folder" is checked.
My current home partition is not an encrypted partition, so I am not sure of what will happen. I just want it to mount it and access it as Ext4, not encrypt it.
I also have a Private folder in my home partition, what will happen to it? Will I be able to mount it afterwards?

Mar 20, 2011I've read several accounts of users who upgraded Ubuntu versions and ran into problems. I read that putting /home on a separate partition can make it easier to do upgrades. But it seems to me application versions and even the default applications themselves change so much between Ubuntu releases that I question whether it's a good idea to have all the "OLD" config files and settings that get stored in /home sitting around when running a new Ubuntu release.Does anyone think it's a better idea to just put the whole Ubuntu install (i.e., / and /home) on the same partition? And then when upgrading, backup, and then just fresh install everything (to get the cleanest possible installation)?

Jun 23, 2010I encrypted "/" and "/home" during boot with F12. Now I'm trying to install F13. The problem is it will not allow to specify /home as the mount point. It will take /home and not complain but when I get back to summary there is no mount point, just blank. When I entered the passphrase it didn't complain so I think that is okay. The / dir I said I wanted to format, so it accepted the / mount point.
I tried to go ahead and install F13 anyway thinking it may figure this out. However it didn't use my /home but created a new /home.

Oct 11, 2010I have a server running an older version of Ubuntu and with /var stored on a separate partition on a separate hard drive. I am attempting to update Ubuntu to 10.04, but I still want to store /var on a separate partition and hard drive. However, I don't want to format the drive which currently contains /var, as it has important data.
Is there some way to have 10.04 set up the new /var on this separate drive at installation, without formatting the drive and losing the old /var?
Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 Installer Shows No Progress After Formatting Partition
Apr 24, 2011I'm trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 on a brand new 500GB hard drive I just purchased and installed in my machine. I boot from the CD and instruct Ubuntu to install to this drive and tell it to "erase and use the entire disk" for this 500GB drive. After moving forward from that, I see it saying a message about creating an ext4 partition for root "/" and then shortly after the entire install dialogue goes away. All I am left with is the little circle cursors spinning round (mouse input still works) and the installation background. The HDD activity light was still on though. I gave it about 3 hours before I finally gave up and tried again.
When I tried again, I saw that it did create two partitions (root and swap) during the last attempt. The same thing happened, although now even mouse input isn't responding so my system is completely locked up. HDD activity remains active this time as well. Running Ubuntu from the CD works fine. The only problem I saw with it was when I ran gparted from the CD and tried to manually create a ext3 partition on my new disk drive. When I tried that, I ran into a similar occurrence (couldn't run any programs, eventually system locked up) and had to reboot.
I have a second hard disk but I have a lot of valuable data on that and don't want to mess around with it. It could be a hardware failure, but that seems unlikely to me as this is a brand new Seagate disk drive. I suppose I could try installing it on a spare partition on my other drive and see what happens, but other than that I'm out of ideas.

Aug 31, 2010I've recently installed openSUSE 11.3 with GNOME When I was working on desktop settings, it locked itself, and it doesn't accept password I set during installation. I know that password is right, because it worked in YaST.
How to solve this problem without loosing any files? I haven't done backup... Is it possible to reinstall system, without formatting hard disk, and loosing files?

Mar 31, 2011So I recently installed openSUSE KDE (latest build, don't know the number?). total linux noob, been a windows user all my life. right now i'm dual-booting between win 7 and opensuse KDE. i originally alotted for a parsley 10gb only to use as a backup whenever my windows inevitably starts having problems and i have no access or means to repair it/ use as a secure place to scan my windows partition and external drives for viruses. i want to expand my opensuse partition.
so my problem is this: i have a 200gb windows partition, a 15 gb partition (U) i set up to do file swapping cross-os (which i couldnt figure out how to work, btw. formatted it in FAT32). and my 10 gb suse partition (O). i tried using the built-in KDE partition manager to shrink or completely do away with U, and expand the suse partition. the problem is my suse partition is ecapsulated by an extended partition, whatever that is, and suse has its own 1.5 gb "swap" partition. after shrinking U i tried expanding O, but it said i was already at max size. tried expanding extended, also didnt work, same goes for the 1.5 gb suse swap partition.
i read in another post that i could do the resizing via some sort of bootable disc, the only problem is that i have no access to cd or dvd blanks, and i have no usb thumb drives just 2 external hd's - 1tb and 250gb. so how can i go about expanding my opensuse partition? the easiest way i could think of is to just reformat/repartition from windows, and reinstall opensuse from my boot dvd. only problem with that is i cant SEE my suse partition from windows...
i imagine i could also just boot from the dvd and run the installer again, and use the partitioner built into the installer, but i didn't really feel comfortable with it the first time around. im know my way around a computer but all of a sudden it blindsided me with a ton of options i know nothing about, it was a little too complicated.

I have my system upgraded from Karmic 9.04 (automatic distro upgraded), but I have too many problems with this upgrade, (nvidia video card not working properly, I can't mount my mp3 player (sansa), and another issues with sounds, etc.) Since I have a separate /home partition, and separate / partition, I would like to do a fresh install of lucid on my first partition (/dev/sda1), thinking of maybe it will fix all my problems with a fresh install from a Lucid CD,
My questions are:
1. If I do a fresh install on /, will I be able to access my home folder on the extended partition?.
2. If I do a fresh install on /, the Lucid installer will recognise my /home partition, or will install everything again?. (meaning another home folder), I don't want 2 home folder,
3. Am I going to have a permission problems between the fresh install and all my stuff in /home partition?

Mar 19, 2011I have just installed ubuntu mavericks to an old laptop. I burned a cd and used it to install from. I choose to have the drive wiped and ubuntu installed to it. When I start up all goes well until the end.. I get a blank screen. It is not blank as in black. It has colors you expect to see with ubuntu but there are no controls... just a blank desktop with a cursor
