Ubuntu Installation :: HP Desktop Won't Run 10.04

Aug 5, 2010

I have a HP model a6019h desktop with 2GB ram 320GB drive and dual core 3.20GHZ.downloaded the live CD and booted on it. It ran for maybe a minute then the computer froze up and would not respond. I had to restart the computer by pressing the on/off button. I then installed and had the same problems. Never could get to the error logs to see if I could determine the problem.I then installed Kubuntu 10.04 and it runs fine with no problems whatsoever. My Dell Inspiron 600m runs Ubuntu fine.

Ubuntu Installation :: Make A Live-USB Containing Among Others Both Desktop I386 And Desktop AMD64

May 1, 2010

I want to make a live-USB containing among others both Ubuntu desktop i386 and Ubuntu desktop AMD64. How do I go about this? I tried using unetbootin, first adding i386 and then amd64, but that failed. My computer with an athlon II did manage to boot, and showed it had booted into the 64-bit version (ram shown was 3.9 GB, i386 goes to about 2.7 I think), my wife's computer with a pentium 4 did not manage to boot, got to a black screen. I think this is because casper has issues, being overwritten (I'd seen something to that effect somewhere), and thus only the latest version added being booted (in this case amd 64).

I'm under the impression that the startup disc creator included won't help, nor won't the multicd.sh script, so how do I circumvent the issues?

Ubuntu Installation :: 9.10 Desktop And 2.6.32-2 Kernel?

Jan 5, 2010

I've got a machine with an Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop install, and a boat-load of server things. It's to fill a combined desktop/server role. I want to upgrade the weak integrated graphics, ATI Rage XL, to an ATI Radeon HD 2400 Pro. The #ati and #radeon (IRC) guys are saying the new open-source Radeon drivers, with all the trimmings, would be best. But if you go to the xorg-edgers "fresh X crack" page, it'll tell you you need the 2.6.32 or later kernel. But the latest Karmic kernel is 2.6.31-16 (which I have installed). So a guy says "No problem. Just download the 2.6.32 kernel for your arch, install with "dpkg -i" and never look back." But another guy says "well, that's an unsupported config and may not behave well." To my question "Could I cripple my system installing that?" "You could," was the answer.

Ubuntu Installation :: Removing The GUI From Desktop

Sep 19, 2010

I originally installed Xubuntu Desktop so that I could manage my fileserver with the GUI (through FreeNX). Now that I have gotten more confortable with Linux, I manage the fileserver entirely from the terminal and ssh.

I feel like I could trim down the fileserver and free up some memory and CPU cycles. Additionally, I don't really like having receive the firefox updates, etc.

Is there a way I can eliminate the GUI from my fileserver?

Ubuntu Installation :: Better Kerrnell For Desktop PC

The thing is I want to change to a kernel that takes better advantage of my particular hardware. Not sure I want to learn to compile yet (fairly new linux user), but want to install an already existing one that fits better. Nevertheless, if compiling is my only option, no big problem either. Now, I currently have the standard 32bits i386 kernel. I don't want to migrate to a full 64bits system, just optimize ye old kernel for my hardware.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Boot Into 10.10 Desktop

Oct 19, 2010

I currently can't boot into 10.10 desktop as I normally do.The system won't reach the graphical login screen. It seems there's issues with X and/or my monitor perhaps, as I'm able to boot via recovery into low graphics mode only. After tinkering around for a bit in that mode the system now makes it past the loading screen but the monitor just goes black and won't respond instead. My system was running fine after the upgrade to 10.10 recently. The last time I was logged in using the desktop normally I used ubuntu tweak to remove old kernels. I may have changed some software sources too. I'm unsure how much that helps.

Is there anything I can do to get up and running without reinstalling? For what it's worth grub offers me a later kernel(ending in .25) whereas grub on my 10.10 netbook offers .22 only and was updated today. I though I had the updates configured the same way on each system but could be wrong.

Ubuntu :: Desktop Bug After Fresh Installation?

Jan 2, 2011

Not sure if this is the place, but I can't seem to find a solution to the following problem. I recently wanted to move from windows to linux and decided to do so today. My computer is HP laptop that had Windows Vista on it. The hardware is more than enough to run Linux.

I booted off the Linux DVD that I created and it booted fine, and looks just like the Ubuntu I have on another computer. I asked it to install and it seemed like it all turned out fine until I rebooted my machine. When I rebooted, it booted to the normal desktop but didnt have the top bar (one with ubuntu symbol on left, wireless options and time etc on the right.) or the application column on the left of the screen. When I clicked in the areas where the applications should be, they would start fine. The main thing is, that it is very hard to navigate if I can't see anything about the top bar or the application column. Is this a common problem and how might I fix it?

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 Desktop Will Not Install

Feb 24, 2011

A friend gave me an old desktop with an old version of windows. I was interested in "checking out" Ubuntu server. It installed without any problem. I added a desktop just to see how it worked. I know that is not something for a server, just messing around. Next I wanted to checkout Ubuntu desktop. I rebooted with the CD in the drive and it started to run. The pick your language screen appeared. Next was the option on what to install. I picked to install the desktop. I did not care if the server was overwritten. The word "Ubuntu" was in the center of a black screen with five dots under it. They would change from white to red to show something was taking place. The only problem was after about 5 minutes the CD drive would stop as if the computer was locked up. After removing the CD from the drive and rebooting the computer went back to loading the server version and the small desktop.

I guess the question would be: Does the Desktop version require a newer computer than what the server versions needs? Is that why I can not get it to install the desktop version (10.10)? Would the removal of the server version with a drive format (if I can find a format program) fix the problem?

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 Desktop On Second Drive

Mar 5, 2011

I want to install the 10.10 desktop on the second hard drive on my desktop machine. After searching and reading posts for the last two nights, I see it is not as simple as I have been told. There are a few points that I have not found a full explaination on how to do.I want to place Ubuntu on the second hard drive to keep it away from the Windows OS on the first drive. From what I see during the installation, it appears to me that the second drive is shown as /dev/sda3. I have read you need a "/" for a root file or you will receive the "No root file defined error". Well I have found no way to create this or to select a "mount point".From running the desk top without installing it, the program looks "interesting". Would like to get it working. But I have to get past these "/" "root", "mount point" problems.

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 Not Installing On Desktop HDD

Apr 29, 2011

I am new to ubuntu and the forum system. I downloaded Ubuntu 11.04 to make a live usb. It booted correctly and everything seemed fine. I explored Ubuntu a little further and liked it very much. Satisfied with Ubuntu I began to tried the installation process. The Ubuntu installer opened up and asked what language I would like I chose english, then the next screen popped up, Which was titled "Preparing to install ubuntu". followed by, for best results, please ensure that this computer:

(xmark)Has at least 4.4 GB available drive space
(check)Is plugged into a power source
(check) is connected to the Internet

I want to use the HDD that windows is installed on, it won't show up at all. I even went through System>administration>GParted Partition Editor. And the only thing that is there is the USB which is a 2gig. Why won't it let me install on the HDD?

BTW, what I am trying to do is install Ubuntu 11.04 though UEFI.

Ubuntu Installation :: Install X11 As The Desktop Environment

Feb 8, 2010

I recently had to get a new PC, I am left with one that while it doesn't do what I needed to, still works just fine so I would like to turn it into a barebones file server. I could do this under Windows, I have an old copy of W2K server install I got from my networking class... but I'd rather do it via Ubuntu.I know there are automated install options but I can't figure out how to make use of them. All I need to have it do, is on install:Install X11 as the desktop environment (lightweight, resource friendly).Install VNC to allow me to remotely administer the server and fine-tune any configurations Setup up the NIC so I can obviously network it.

If there's a way to strip off the extra programs (ie: games, office software, graphics editors, etc), that'd be fine. I'm unsure if I want to do any media streaming (specifically of music, unsure if the onboard graphics is suited to video)I don't have a spare monitor to hook this up with, and I want to stash this machine in an out-of-the way place where it won't be noticed. Can anyone help me or point out an 'idiot's guide to automated installing Ubuntu' by any chance?
