Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 Not Installing On Desktop HDD

I am new to ubuntu and the forum system. I downloaded Ubuntu 11.04 to make a live usb. It booted correctly and everything seemed fine. I explored Ubuntu a little further and liked it very much. Satisfied with Ubuntu I began to tried the installation process. The Ubuntu installer opened up and asked what language I would like I chose english, then the next screen popped up, Which was titled "Preparing to install ubuntu". followed by, for best results, please ensure that this computer:
(xmark)Has at least 4.4 GB available drive space
(check)Is plugged into a power source
(check) is connected to the Internet
I want to use the HDD that windows is installed on, it won't show up at all. I even went through System>administration>GParted Partition Editor. And the only thing that is there is the USB which is a 2gig. Why won't it let me install on the HDD?
Plan installing Ubuntu 10.04 LTS ONLY, BOTH on my desktop & laptop.1. How do I proceed........as to how many, types, sizes, file systems of partitions.......I think would need /boot, /root, /swap, /home (on a separate partition)?2. Size of HDD are 290 GB & 100 GB respectively.3. Once partitions are created & Ubuntu installed would like to create a full back up image just in case?4. If the Linus OS files get corrupted or need a reinstall is it possible to just install it in the /root with out changing/recreating other partition structures?5. Is Ubuntu version stable enough, any advantage of any other version or 64 bit vs 32 bit, since want to install once & have a peace of mind for some time......no Linux genius just a retired old MD.6. Suggestions as to what kind of security steps to be taken & what software to use to create a full back up & where to save the backup?
I want to install Amahi and Fedora14 on a desktop which is already running Windows XP. The detailed guide for installation at the Amahi site, which I intended to follow, assumes a clean installation with no XP. I have downloaded and burnt to DVD the Fedora 14 Desktop Edition. I have one 1,5 TB HDD with much unallocated space outside the partitioning for XP. When I restart the PC, it will boot XP. The boot options in the BIOS does not allow me to set the DVD as a boot priority. How do I start the installation process?
I just installed Ubuntu 10.04, it was all working like a charm until y tried to install nvidia's propietary drivers using the integrated hardware drivers manager. Now ubuntu just boots into a non graphical tty. How can i fix Xorg?I have an AMD Athlon X2 5200+, the chipset is a nForce 430 with an integrated Geforce 6150.
I downloaded and installed the Ubuntu desktop edition and when I boot up I have the options to boot either Windows 7, or Ubuntu (so far so good), however, when I select Ubuntu I get a message saying that the following file is corrupt:
File: ubuntuwinbootwubildr.mbr

Info: The selected entry could not be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt.
Any thoughts on this? Would just re-installing it fix the problem?
I installed Fedora 12 on my computer using the install DVD and that worked fine. However, upon booting up, I was dismayed to find that all I could access was the command line where it says: [root@localhost~]#
So naturally I went searching and found that the problem was that no desktop environment had been installed. So I went to try to install KDE since I really like the way its screenshots worked and a number of my friends recommended it. I hooked my computer into my router(since I'm finding wireless on my machine is going to be tricky right now) and used yum to try to install the desktop. I found the appropriate code at [URL] to install with yum. I promptly did and allowed yum to do its thing, downloading and installing all the necessary files after which I went through the steps on the website.
The problem comes now, when I try to boot my new desktop environment from the command line. After entering "startx" I get the following error: xauth: creating nw authority file /root/serverauth.1250 xinit: No such file or directory (errno2): no server "/usr/bin//X" in PATH Use the -- option or make sure that /usr/bin is in your path and that "/usr/bin/X" is a program or a link to the right type of server for your display.
Possible server names include: Xorg Common X server for most displays Xvfb Vertual frame buffer Xfake kdrive-based virtual fram buffer Xnest X server nested in a window on another x server xephyr kdrive-based nested X server xinit: Server error. How to get the startx command to work. Or maybe I'm not even supposed to use startx...
I am trying to install Squeeze (Debian 6.0.2), KDE environment, desktop PC, older 32-bit single CPU, 40 GB hard drive wholedisk, 2 GB RAM). I am trying to install an encrypted hard drive (takeover installation using entire hard drive).
Each time I try this I seem to run into different problems, and to date I have not succeeded in obtaining graphical installation. My most recent previous thread on my problems is at

It contains video controller hardware information. (In that thread I mentioned a desktop and a laptop; I am currently trying to install Squeeze on the desktop PC, not the laptop!)
It seems I will need to request using apt in the shell the Squeeze package firmware-linux-nonfree. I am not familiar with configuring apt from the command line. Can anyone just tell me what I need? (I have many other things I am trying to learn today, so RTFM would not be helpful in this instance.) I am hoping apt will be autoconfigured well enough to get the deb if I simply give the command. Would it be
apt-get install firmware-linux-nonfree
I want to ensure before trying to get apt to install debs over the internet that the key-signing and package verification is working. I hope that all is done automatically by the installer, but does anyone know with certainty? I stress that (as I understand things) checking the GPG signature of a signed deb is different from and complementary with checking the integrity hash; both verifications are crucially important. The reason I ask is that at least under oldstable (Lenny) there was a separate debsig package, which seems to imply that apt does not automatically acquire the ability to check the GPG signature of signed debs.
Someone said that in addition to non-free drivers I might need to obtain firmware. I have never been able to do this successfully, probably because hardware sites assume Windows users and I don't use Windows at all.
after I boot the system, it would get to XBMC automatically, and when I tried to exit XBMC, it returns to login screen with two choices for Sessions, XBMC and xterm. xterm just gets me a terminal. So I tried to remove xbmc by using command line. Now, whenever I start the system, it takes me to the login screen, and after entering my credentials, the screen will go black for 1 or 2 seconds, then return to the login screen again, in an infinite loops. How do I get my Gnome desktop back? I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit
restore my kde desktop? Mine got switch back to the old GNOME desktop after installing AWN. I already uninstalled AWN but im still having problems restoring it back.
I'm running a regular installation of Ubuntu 10.10 with Gnome.I would like to try LXDE and other desktop environment,BUT without installing the entire Lubuntu.Last time I tried something like that,I installed the kubuntu-desktop package which came with a ton of software I didn't want.I couldn't even remove it easily, so I followed a tutorial which made me remove some of the software I had BEFORE messing with KDE.So what I'm asking is simple-is there a standalone package that installs nothing but another desktop environment? I also want to be able to remove it with a simple apt-get remove.

i have install ubuntu 10.04 inside my external hard disk, and it work nicely.I update and upgrade the ubuntu inside the EXT HDD. and installed some software inside. Is there a way, that I can install the software that I have install inside this external hard disk into my desktop computer that have low or none internet connection. Can I update and upgrade my desktop computer via the ubuntu on the external hard disk? and install some software.
I have done this installations a couple of times before and everytime it's been working for me.
I emailed their support about it as well.
They told me it should work by just doing these first steps, but since it didn't they asked to take a look at it. So they did.

installed compiz but it didn't work! , i rebooted and logged in again..all menus disappeared .i can't access my apps,net ..... any idea what caused that and how to fix please?
I am using ubuntu for a month. Yesterday i tried to upgrade it from 9.10 to 10.0. Then i had to shut down the pc for electricity failure. After that ubuntu came into halt in boot time and something like recovery shell came. It advised me to use "fsck" and i did that. All were again fine (Except some icon goes from left to right ). Then today i was trying to install "Virtuabox" and it says i need to remove "devicekit-power" package. i did it with synaptic package manager ( with my newbie wisdom , didn't knew it would crample my system ). Then the Empathy gone, shut down button gone ). I then installed some lost package
but ubuntu-desktop package is not installing. Whenever i try it says to fix broken package and i tried the option in synaptic, but no luck. also tried in recovery mode to fix broken package but it says the same. now i got the empathy and the green sign back ( after installing those 3 package ) but not like it was ( they are now separated , and uglier ). Same problem installing devicekit-power package. it says it is not in repository.
1. Did the 10.0 failure upgrade was behind this thing?
2. Any help installing Virtuabox? it first installs fine ( downloaded deb package ). then it tries to download some extra packages and always fails to download them. tried in command shell as instructed in its website and also treid in ubuntu soft centre but no luck.
3. Is there any way i can install the missing ubuntu-desktop and devicekit thing?
4. Would be very glad if someone tell me about a linux soft that protect my system from my wild exploration and destruction
I want to make a live-USB containing among others both Ubuntu desktop i386 and Ubuntu desktop AMD64. How do I go about this? I tried using unetbootin, first adding i386 and then amd64, but that failed. My computer with an athlon II did manage to boot, and showed it had booted into the 64-bit version (ram shown was 3.9 GB, i386 goes to about 2.7 I think), my wife's computer with a pentium 4 did not manage to boot, got to a black screen. I think this is because casper has issues, being overwritten (I'd seen something to that effect somewhere), and thus only the latest version added being booted (in this case amd 64).
I'm under the impression that the startup disc creator included won't help, nor won't the multicd.sh script, so how do I circumvent the issues?
I have an older desktop with 233 Megahertz processor and one main hard drive 6 GB and a second internal hard drive 4 GB, with only 64 megabytes of RAM. I have installed Windows XP Professional on the main drive. It runs but too slow. I want to wipe/delete the partition and format the hard drive(s) and install a light version of Linux. The computer will be used only for internet and email and light word processing.
I've just installed the ubuntu server system on an old PC i'm going to be using as, you guessed it, a server. Because I like (some) graphical tools while configuring I also installed ubuntu-desktop on it afterwards.
The only problem is that I want to keep ubuntu-desktop, but that I don't want to boot into the (memory consuming) graphical interface by default.Does anyone know how to do that? (set the default boot to command-prompt). Also, does anyone have tips on packages I c an safely remove to clear up space and memory? (Like: openoffice, Evolution,Rhythmbox etc. are very obvious, but maybe some more hidden services and alike? Networkmanager e.g.?)

i have installed ubuntu 9.04 and desktop xubuntu. i want access the sever from my windows xp using either rdp or vnc. i am able to use the ssh but thats only command line. i need the gui desktop. i have installed x11vnc,tightvnc etc. but whenever i try to connect from my vnc manager,its giveout error.machine actively refused it. i havent configured any port or anything like that.
I have deny host installed and working on my laptop, running Lucid. I need to securely control my home computer from work. My home computer is connected to the internet via a wireless router using Tomato. I'm using the latest Ubuntu on both ends. Is the Remote Desktop that's installed by default good enough? What settings do I need for my home router to safely allow my remote connections and not leave it open to intruders?

I thought apt would automatically install the package dependencies. I don't really want to update the entire installation as I have a lot of network services installed and running which I don't want to risk breaking. They aren't exposed to the internet and don't pose a security risk. So is there any way to get apt to install the dependencies for build-essential?
I have a Dell Studio 1537 Laptop with what lspci calls an "ATI Technologies Inc Mobility Radeon HD 3400" graphics card. Today I downloaded a daily image of Lucid, threw it on a USB drive, and booted it up. As I go to install the restricted driver for my graphics card, I notice that clicking on a panel item triggers the star burst effect. Come to find out that I can set desktop effects to "extra" and get smooth wobbly windows and everything.
Why are desktop effects working? I've always had to install FGLRX before, did the open source driver somehow get 3D support? Am I missing something? I almost feel like Compiz is performing better-- smoother, less tearing, etc.
i'm having trouble with my fresh ubuntu installation (netbook edition). what i did was install xubuntu-desktop on top of that (wanted to check it out)..........didn't really work for me, so i removed it, hoping this would also remove the xubuntu desktop logon screen, which i didn't like. since this wasn't the case, i went to synaptics and removed all and everything with xubuntu in the title. NOTE: in the same session i turned off password requests for login - it could also matter, but i'm not sure, so i thought i'd mention it. the end result: three warning messages at logon

- There is a problem with the configuration server. (/usr/lib/bgconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256)
- Nautilus could not create the following required folders: /home/dsikl/Desktop, /home/dsikl/.nautilus. Before running Nautilus, please create these folders, or set permissions such that Nautilus can create them.
i don't have access to my programs, administrator tools, /home folder, nothing.........the only thing that appears is the right part of the top bar (network, clock etc.), but also completely different.......it doesn't have my WLAN data anymore (can't access it), and all i have managed to get started was (accidentally) terminal with Ctrl-Alt-T, and from there I can use sudo, or even start nautilus, but can't access my own user, no matter what.........in the end i somehow managed to get to the point where it requested my passphrase, which i wanted to print out a day before it happened, but didn't and the screenshot is unfortunately within my /home folder. i tried reinstalling xubuntu-desktop, even ubuntu-desktop, i repaired broken packages from the recovery mode, tried everything i could to get the bugger going again, no success yet.
i would be happy to do a clean install, but there's one spreadsheet in the documents folder which i desperately need and i really need to get a hold of it before formating. could some sort of a rescue livecd help? i just need that one file. the easiest would be if i could somehow repair whatever packages may be broken, or manually (with apt-get or similar) reinstall the additional xubuntu packages i manually removed via synaptics, but i wouldn't have a clue what those were
under gnome (OS: ubuntu lucid 10.04) i installed KGet and it was working fine with no problems or ( extra PKGs installation ) ... then i wanted to try KDE desktop so i installed kubuntu-desktop , after that gnome windows and message alerts have been transformed to KDE form even if i was logged with gnome ...
I uninstalled kubuntu-desktop using instructions provided here : [url] but then i lost kget .... now when i try to install it again , synaptic iforms me that i have to install a lot of extra packages as well .. what is the shortest way to install and run KDE program on my gnome desktop properly .. ?
