Ubuntu :: SSD Partitioning A Solid State Drive On A Dell Mini 9

May 26, 2010

I'm having a particular problem trying to partition a solid state drive on a Dell Mini 9; I'd like to install Ubuntu Netbook on the computer. The machine came with MS Windows XP on it. When I try to use the automated installer, it fails and quits at the partitioning stage. I have tried both fdisk and parted but both of these also fail and quit with errors when they try to write to the disk. I've also tried using Fedora and Knoppix to install and they both fail as well. I did check in the BIOS that the drive, supervisor and user passwords are clear.

Some technical bits that fdisk chucks out;

can get access to partition the drive or diagnostics to tell what is the problem with the drive?

Ubuntu Installation :: Get From 9.04 To 10.4 On Dell Mini 9?

May 1, 2010

How best to get from 9.04 to 10.04 on my Dell Mini 9?

I hadn't upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10 because I read that the WiFi card no longer worked with 9.10 on the DM9. What I see now indicates that to get from 9.04 to 10.04 I MUST go thru 9.10. If that is the case, I won't be able to download 10.04 because I won't have a WiFi connection.

Ubuntu :: 9 Or 10 On Compaq Mini 311: Total Freezeing After Installation?

Sep 13, 2010

I have got a lap top (Compaq Mini 311), I tried to install Ubuntu 10.04, but after installing it I found only a black screen with a blinking whithe bar, and the keyboard does not work anymore.Looking across the net, I found this page , where is written that I have to install the previous version, do some operation and then upgrade it. Well, also with Ubuntu 9.10 and Ubuntu 9.04 I have got the same problem: total freezeing of the computer after the installation.

So, I tried to install ubuntu with wubi, as a virtual machine, but the problem is exactly the same.Somethimes, it may happen that Ubuntu loads, but it happens about in 1/50 cases.I installed it many times, everytime erasing the partition, but actually I have a boot menu with about 6 or 7 linux (not working), and windows, loading windows I can choose between win and ubuntu, if I choose ubuntu, I have 5 options: 4 are not-working-linux, and one of them is windows. If I choose windows, I come back to the previous menu: a loop on grub was done, but I don't know how.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 Netbook On Dell Mini With Failed SSD

Jan 7, 2011

I have a Dell Mini 9 with a failed SSD. I created a bootable USB drive from the Ubuntu-10.10-netbook-i386.iso. It boots up the Dell Mini ok. If after selecting 'try ubuntu' from the Live USB and setting the desktop and wireless up, is there a way I could image that config on the same or different USB. It would be like installing Ubuntu 10.10 on a USB device instead of a HD. The Mini has 1G RAM.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 Mini USB GRUB Boot Loader ?

Jan 21, 2011

I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 Minimal on a 2GB USB using CLI and it is working very well after I added a few things. I intend to use it on machines other than my own. But the GRUB boot loader was installed to the main system on my machine and it is booting from there.

During the installation it was said that the bootloader can be installed on a floppy. So I started a new 2 GB stick and tried to install the boot loader on a floppy but my computer does not recognize floppies anymore (seems to be a wider problem with recent distributions).

So I tried to install the bootloader on a different USB stick and and this also did not work. Cannot find recent and relatively easy way to install GRUB boot loader to a stick.

Ubuntu Installation :: Failed Mac Mini 10.04 Triple Boot On OS X / XP System

Sep 19, 2010

I have a Mac Mini with OS X that I had dual booted successfully with Windows XP for my family. I am a rookie at all this but learned a lot Googling sites that walked me through things. I got bold and tried to triple boot the Mac Mini with Ubuntu 10.04 using rEfIt. I was following this website. [URL].

MISTAKE #1
All was done to the letter until I accidentally realized I had clicked install on step 8 before I clicked "Advanced" to check off the "Install Boot Loader" and changing the device to the partition I had made for Ubuntu (/dev/sda3/). It finished installing and rebooted with the rEFIt screen with Mac / Ubuntu /Windows icons. Mac started, but both Windows and Ubuntu showed a black screen with blinking underscore in the top left of the screen. I went back to the Mac OS and in Disk Utility I noticed that the Linux-Ubuntu name on the partition I had made changed to "DiskOS3".

Mistake #2
I panicked and used "Erase" in Disk Utility on that partition using the Zero Out Data security Erase option.

Mistake #3
Then I reinstalled the Ubuntu 10.04 cd into the drive and did the install boot loader steps. It started up but the rEFIt screen now has Mac/ two Ubuntu penguins/ and Windows icons. Mac starts and works, but both ubuntu icons and Windows leads to the black screen with blincking underscore cursor.

Ubuntu Installation :: Wireless Not Working On Mini-laptop / Resolve This?

Jan 3, 2011

New user to Linux. I installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS to a mini-laptop, but the built-in wireless card/chip is not working. It worked under the previous OS, XP. There is a switch on the case frame that enables it, but the active light did not turn on during installation. I installed a second time and manually flicked the switch every one second to see if it needed human intervention, but to no avail.

My next step was to try to update Ubuntu to see if it would help, so I inserted a Belkin USB wireless, but the connection was intermittent at best. I believe the device is faulty. A wired connection is impossible as I am sharing with my neighbor. What should I do to help Ubuntu the internal wireless device?

Here is the output of lshw code...

Ubuntu Installation :: Reinstall On Dell Mini Via System Restore - Boot Error

Feb 1, 2010

My Mini13 came with hardy preloaded, and it's got pretty messed up since, so I'd like to restore factory OS via a grub entry that looks like this:
title System Restore
root (hd0,2)
chainloader +1
boot

This points to a partition which, when mounted, has this stuff in it:
bootfs.img initrd0.img install.sh logo.png syslinux.cfg vmlinuz
boot.msg install.cfg ldlinux.sys rootfs.img vesamenu.c32

I'm not a computer, but that looks pretty good to me but when I select this grub option it just says:
Boot Error
Is there a log or something that might give me more info about the error?

Ubuntu Installation :: Wireless Driver Install Error On Liveusb For Dell Inspiron Mini 9

Oct 5, 2010

I have a persistent liveusb with ubuntu 9.10 that I installed using the method on [url]

I use it on a Dell Inspiron Mini 9 netbook (that boots Mac OS X from its SSD). An ubuntu persistent liveusb works just great for occasional linux development and testing, but ubuntu 9.10 will be EOL next year, and I want to stay current.

I've installed ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS on a liveusb using the method on [url]

After I've booted the liveusb, under the network menu I see this:

Wireless Networks
Device not ready

A menu appears that looks like a PCI card with a lock on it. I select the only item under that menu, "Install Drivers". This gives a dialog that says "No proprietary drivers are in use on this system. Proprietary drivers do not have public source code..." etc. Under Ubuntu 9.10, I could at this point select "Broadcom STA wireless driver" and click the "Activate" button, and it would work. So I did that in 10.04.1.

It says, "Downloading and installing driver..."

While it's doing this, the "kerneloops" menu item appears. Then a dialog that says,

Sorry, the package "bcmwl-kernel-source 5.60.48.36 +bdcom-0ubuntu3" failed to install or upgrade.

Then another dialog that says

SystemError: installArchives() failed.

What the heck is happening here?

Well, it turns out that the error messages are wrong. I restarted and the DM9/ubuntu 10.04.1 was able to connect to the wireless network.

tl;dr: Proprietary wireless driver installation works, but it claims that it doesn't.

Ubuntu Installation :: Ubuntu 11.04 With Hp Mini - Won't Boot - Goes To The Desktop Theme Then Freezes With Three Warning Messages

Jun 9, 2011

I have a hp mini 1033cr. Awhile ago I installed ubuntu netbook edition, well I was new to Ubuntu so I clicked upgrade. Well everything was going good and then it restarted. when I came up to the log in page I typed my password and now it won't boot. it goes to the desktop theme but then freezes with three warning messages.

1st could not update ICEauthority file /home/adam/.ICEauthority

2nd There is a problem with the configuration server. (/usr/lib/libgcond-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256)

3rd Nautilus could not create the following required folders: /home/adam/desktop, /home/adam/.nautilus

I have tried a fresh install with a disc I burnt and ran with my external dvd drive. Well guess what it decided to not boot from it. I have also tried several other discs including a windows xp disc. it always boots back to the hard drive.

Ubuntu Installation :: Creating An Extremely Minimal Version Of Xubuntu Using XFCE - Go With Mini.iso Or The Xubuntu Alternate Install CD ?

Jan 12, 2010

I was thinking of creating an extremely minimal version of Xubuntu using XFCE. I have a Dell Mini 9, a netbook that uses a wireless-g card requiring bcmwl-kernel-source to work. What I would like to do is use either the alternate CD or mini.iso minimal install file to perform a command line install-style installation of the system. So far, what I am thinking (from reading this [url].... article:

HTML Code:

http:[url].....is to start off with these packages to begin with:

xorg
slim (if possible with 9.10, unsure if it is still available. in short, i want to use a lightweight display manager)
xfce4
xfce4-goodies
xubuntu-default-settings
bcmwl-kernel-source
aptitude

My opening questions are: Should I go with mini.iso or the Xubuntu Alternate Install CD (or the Ubuntu one)? If so, which one? What additional packages will I need to make the hardware accessible and fully functional? All I can think of so far would be sound (I'd like to stay away from PulseAudio if possible, it wreaks havoc with my computer), my webcam, and the memory card slot, if additional packages are needed for it?What other "core" packages should I include in this list? Should I include Synaptic, or other packages, and why? What do I need to take into consideration, since this is both a directly- and battery-powered computer?

Ubuntu Installation :: Mini Iso Installer Crash - Error "mirror Does Not Support The Specified Release (natty)"

I have been trying to use the amd64 version of the natty mini iso installer. The installer crashes with the log stating bad address us.archive.ubuntu.com. This is true for any archive I select. error is: mirror does not support the specified release (natty) Anyone know of a working mirror or if one will ever work? Not a confidence builder in the development.

I also tried the Maveric version of the mini iso. It also crashes with complaints about a bad kernel. So far a wasted day. Just add to this I tried the normal natty iso. The problem is in the manual partitioning. It locks up solid while trying to set partitions. Is there a later release of the iso?
