Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Failed To Install After Upgrade?

May 7, 2011

I started the upgrade and the system is nearly completed but I there is a problem with GRUB.Most likely since I am dual boot with win7. So right now I have a pop-up message that says...GRUB failed to install to the following devices:/dev/sdbDo you want to continue anyway? ect ect ect...I have not rebooted and completed the installation yet as I figure its probably easier to fix this now while I have the full system up and running vs having to fix it via live cd.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub PC 1.98 Lubuntu 6 Failed To Install Or Upgrade

May 30, 2010

I installed a new Ubuntu OS in my computer, (I downloaded it yesterday) on a dual boot pc (windows xp) Installation went smooth until it reached grub-pc. It was installing grub-pc (1.98 lubuntu6). It hanged there for several hours. Finally I interrupted the installation. When I went to the installed packages I got a message telling: Grub-PC 1.98 Lubuntu 6 Failed to Install or Upgrade. I'm pretty new to Linux so I know nothing about it, but I wish to go away from Windows XP.

Ubuntu Installation :: Log On Failed After Upgrade/install "authentication Failed"

May 20, 2010

I've been using Ubuntu since 6.04, not a linux guru by any means but can usually get myself out of trouble.

So, the issue... I installed 8.04 on my mother's laptop some time back as she was having trouble keeping Win 2000 running (she has a low spec no-name generic laptop btw). I live in Autsralia and she in England, i thought i could better support her if she was running Ubuntu... All has been well with 8.04 but with the new LTS release (10.04) i thought i'd talk her through the upgrade... Did the online upgrade via Update Manager, all seemed to go OK but when she went to log on after restart she got an error saying 'authentication failed' even though we are 100% sure we have the user name and password correct... Tried to do a ctrl+alt+F1 to by pass the GUI log on but couldn't get the terminal session to open up, just got a black screen - no command prompt.

So... thought OK re-install... downloaded the ISO, burned and sent her a CD in the post... talked her through the re-install, all seemed to go well (again) - BUT, after restart, couldn't log in "authentication failed" again...

So, remember i'm trying to talk a novice through all this... any thoughts!?!

If i can get her to log in i can then support her via some kind of remote sesion or other screen share... and it wont cost me a small fortune in international calls!!! But if i can't get a log in, i'm dead in the water!?

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Failed On Install - Now No Boot Up Into Any OS

Feb 1, 2010

I cannot boot into either OS. Grub failed on install. How to boot back in to windows. From live Ubuntu CD I can see that all files are there, however it shows the disk to be unrecognized and unallocated. There is an X by the root folder of my C; drive. Windows recovery console can't fix it, windows install can't fix it, and windows repair can't fix it. I guess I need to reconfigure my boot drive properties to recognize the ntfs; I don't know what to do. I would like to boot back in to windows partition the drive correctly and start over , is this possible?

Ubuntu Installation :: Executing 'grub-install /dev/sda' Failed

May 20, 2011

I've been trying to install Natty (64) over the last couple of weeks and am having problems that I've never had with any distribution before. At the end of each install, I get the following error:

Code:
Executing 'grub-install /dev/sda' failed

It then gives me the option of installing grub somewhere else, which I don't want, but it doesn't work anyway, or leaving without a boot loader, which isn't really desirable.

At first I thought it might be something to do with my previously complicated quad-boot partition layout, so I simplified that to a fairly regular Windows and Ubuntu only, but no luck.

Grub also fails when attempting to upgrade 10.10.

I've tried restoring Grub2 using chroot amongst other things which doesn't work.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade To 9.10: Failed To Install Kernel?

Sep 9, 2010

I have a Dell Vostro v13 laptop that was shipped with 9.04. I upgraded to 9.10 and it told me it could not upgrade the kernel. The error message said something about a problem with the kernel file. I can still run the system and have not rebooted since the upgrade, but I need to be able to reboot eventually.

The System Monitor says:
Release 9.10 (karmic)
Kernel Linux 2.6.28-19-generic

Everything I have read says that 9.10 includes kernel 2.6.31. So I am afraid to reboot now.

Ubuntu Installation :: Install From Scratch / Package - Grub Failed

Aug 20, 2010

i tried my first linux installation with Fedora distro. using the live 64 usb boot version, everyhing looked fine. BUT i had issues with WINE so by recommendation, i went with Ubuntu and flushed Fedora. So, technicaly, the install works fine, during the process of installing from the live usb 64 bit 10.4 ubuntu. BUT at the end, when installing GRUB, it just simply failed! thats's a shame for me what i can tell you is the following. (thats what i think is my problem, but i need some expert help tho!)

my motherboard is a ASUS, im using 3 HDD 500GB sata2 drive, configured as a RAID in the bios, strip 0. so it presents to the OS one partition of 1.5 TB. Fedora detected it correctly, and was able to install grub on that now, during the Ubuntu install, i can chose to pick up a partition that was not used on my 1.5 TB ( i reduced my partition to 1TB and allowed 500GB to linux). Windows 7 reside on the first partition. on this disk, partition 1 is a 100MB windows bootmanager. partition 2 is windows 7 itself 1TB.

during the install of ubunto, i tell him to create a / partition, using 480GB as the third partition, and i created a 4th partition as a swap for linux. the install process the information, install the DATA on the third partition... BUT grub, can't !!! it failed... it keep looking for a /dev/sda disk... when installing GRUB, i can chose the drop down, for the 1.5TB disk, and when i press OK, he just simply try again to access /dev/sda disk... which is full of course and within a BIOS raid..........

Ubuntu Installation :: Error Message: The Grub Package Failed To Install Into /target

Oct 2, 2010

I was trying to install ubuntu 9.10 as a dual boot system with windows and I recieved this error message: The Grub package failed to install into /target/. Without the Grub boot loader, the installed system will not boot

This Error comes up after 94% of the install. I also cannot seem to get the side by side install option to work (sometimes this option appears sometimes it does not) I am not sure but I beleive seome of the install files have been placed on the hard drive because I only get the option now to install on the hard drive and totally wipe clean or the emptiest hard drive. So how would I get the possible Ubuntu install off the Hard drive. I have used this CD to Install before it has no scratches therefore should work. Also If I have Win Xp on a Raid 0 will the Ubuntu 9.10 install ?

Ubuntu :: GRUB Won't Load After Failed Upgrade?

Mar 6, 2011

When I start my computer GRUB starts, but it only says:Grub Loading stage1.5.Grub loading, please wait...and nothing happensHere is what happened before:I had a dual boot on my computer with Windows and Ubuntu. There was also a problem with Windows, but that's another thing. Now I had not upgraded Ubuntu for a long time. I think I still had Ubuntu 8.9 . So I wanted to upgrade and let Ubuntu do it automatically, it showed the upgrade to 9.4. So let it upgrade, but it asked if it had to change menu.lst, but since I had menu.lst modified in the right way, I choose the option to keep the already installed version. But it just kept asking the same question, so 4 or 5 times and a few hours later I choose the option to change it to the default package version. Then it didn't ask this anymore, but it hung at a later stage.

So I waited several hours longer, but it didn't proceed anymore, so I had to shut it down.It shut down OK, but then when I restarted, what I described above happened. Now I have another problem, my disk reader (CD/DVD) doesn't work either, so I cannot simply use a LiveCD.

Ubuntu Installation :: GRUB Not Showing Install After Upgrade?

Dec 6, 2010

At first I thought it was a fluke, but it happed on another computer I was a bit late in updating. I'm running 10.04 lucid 32 bit on both computers.

After running the update, everything ran fine. The script ran update-grub and everything seemed ok. However when I rebooted, my laptop booted into GRUB and only showed windows and the recovory partition. Desktop would boot strait into windows with no selection (I knew how to fix it for the desktop since it happed a few days later)

When it first happend on my laptop, I scrounged around trying to repair the OS list, but nothing worked. Eventualy running "grub-install" with the "--root-directory" option on a live CD fixed it.

I'm not sure what is causing the problem, but I think I remember there being an update to GRUB when I ran the updater. The fix works, just a bit of a hassle, but I thought I would bring it to someone's attention in case it happens to them.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub - Setup: Warning: Attempting To Install GRUB To A Partition Instead Of The MBR - Install - Lvm - Luks - Raid - Karmic Server

Mar 27, 2010

I'm running Karmic Server with GRUB2 on a Dell XPS 420. Everything was running fine until I changed 2 BIOS settings in an attempt to make my Virtual Box guests run faster. I turned on SpeedStep and Virtualization, rebooted, and I was slapped in the face with a grub error 15. I can't, in my wildest dreams, imagine how these two settings could cause a problem for GRUB, but they have. To make matters worse, I've set my server up to use Luks encrypted LVMs on soft-RAID. From what I can gather, it seems my only hope is to reinstall GRUB. So, I've tried to follow the Live CD instructions outlined in the following article (adding the necessary steps to mount my RAID volumes and LVMs). [URL]

If I try mounting the root lvm as 'dev/vg-root' on /mnt and the boot partition as 'dev/md0' on /mnt/boot, when I try to run the command $sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/md0, I get an errors: grub-setup: warn: Attempting to install GRUB to a partition instead of the MBR. This is a BAD idea. grub-setup: error: Embedding is not possible, but this is required when the root device is on a RAID array or LVM volume.

Somewhere in my troubleshooting, I also tried mounting the root lvm as 'dev/mapper/vg-root'. This results in the grub-install error: $sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/md0 Invalid device 'dev/md0'

Obviously, neither case fixes the problem. I've been searching and troubleshooting for several hours this evening, and I must have my system operational by Monday morning. That means if I don't have a solution by pretty early tomorrow morning...I'm screwed. A full rebuild will by my only option.

Ubuntu Installation :: GRUB Loader / When Power Up Its Saying GRUB Loader Failed?

Nov 16, 2010

I have a laptop with windows vista installed on the internal hardrive.Last March I installed wanted to start to use linux so I brought a separate external hardrive partitioned it to enable media storage on one section and installed ubuntu on the other half. It works fine and so does the windows vista on my internal hardrive, however I have to have the hardrive plugged in to boot.Until now this hasnt bothered me, however I've recently started to take my laptop into university and cannot switch it off unless I have the external hardrive with me as I cannot switch it on without it.With it plugged in it loads up GRUB and then gives me the option to load either Ubuntu or windows vista, however if it is not plugged in when I power up it says GRUB loader failed. It also occured to me that if for some reason my external hardrive fails in the future I wont be able to use my laptop anymore.Has the installation of ubuntu (and GRUB) altered the MBR?
Is there some way I can edit the settings so that I can load windows vista without the hardrive plugged in, and then if it is plugged in I get the choice which one to load?

Ubuntu Installation :: Failed Upgrade From Kubuntu 8.04 To 9.10?

May 31, 2010

I have an Proliant DL380 that I use as a home server/router that I attempted to upgrade to Lucid. The gui upgrader first attempted to upgrade to 9.10 (as expected.)

I believe grub was incorrectly installed/updated. Not quite sure if grub2 was installed. The machine boots to a maintenance prompt. The partitions seem to be mounted read-only because of errors. The grub menu only shows an 8.04 kernel choice, even though all 9.10 packages were downloaded and, I believe, installed. The gui upgrader did fail with an error right before the "cleaning-up" stage. After "messing around" with it, the upgrader said I needed to reboot. So, I did and my problems started.

I tried booting the 9.10 Kubuntu cdrom and also a Knoppix 6 CD, but neither one would boot properly (gave me a BusyBox prompt.) So, I guess they don't like the Smart Array 6.

what I could try to fix and upgrade to 10.04? I really don't want to lose my configuration files (dhcp, firestarter rules, apache, squirrelmail, NFS, etc.)

Ubuntu Installation :: Restart After Upgrade To 11.04 Failed

Mar 26, 2011

i am an ubuntu nooby, out of curiosity i installed ubuntu 11.04 alpha3 last night. Yes, i will definitely never install an alpha version unless i wish to test it! Frankly said, i first installed 386 version on a notebook which runs just fine. So I thought why not install the 64 bit version on my pc.

Unfortunately, the system did not finish the first reboot in order to complete the installation. First it always stopped at "checking battery state". There, I read that this bug is already fixed: [URL]... I came across this thread: [URL]... So I pressed Alt +F2 in order to log in and performed sudo apt-get update followed by sudo apt-get upgrade. Everytime there was a new update I hoped, that this will fix the issue. But when I shutdown the system with sudo shutdown now -h and restart again there is no progress. The only thing that changed is that the system no stops at "Stopping userspace bootsplash", whatever that means?

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade From 10.10 To 11.04 Failed - Can't Get To The Desktop

Apr 28, 2011

I used Kubuntus kpackagekit to upgrade to natty. The process started well, it downloaded everything and started to install 11.04. But then all of a sudden during Installing stage I got this error message:

"Distribution upgrade process exited with code 1"

and

"Your system might be unusable".

And it sure is unusable because after reboot I can only see Kubuntu 10.10 loading screen and

"The disk drive for / is not ready yet or not present".

There also are options for either skip mounting or manually mount hard disks. I don't have a clue how to manually mount... I get same message if I try to boot to safe mode. Does this mean I have to go to clean install? I really don't want to do that because last time it took a couple of months to get ubuntu to co-operate well enough with my laptop.

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 Upgrade Failed & Won't Boot?

Apr 29, 2011

Got a Netbook. No CD drive so mounted image to USB stick and booted into installer from there. Chose the option to upgrade from 10.04 LTS to 11.04 and the installer hung on removing conflicting operating system files. In the end, I was forced to restart as nothing else could be done. Now, it just boots to this:

Quote: error: no argument specified.
mount: mounting /dev on /root/dev failed: No such file or directory
mount: mounting /sys on /root/sys failed: No such file or directory
mount: mounting /proc on /root/proc failed: No such file or directory
Target filesystem doesn't have /sbin/init.
No init found. Try passing init= bootarg.

BusyBox v1.13.3 (Ubuntu 1:1.13.3-1ubuntu11) built-in shell (ash)Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.

I booted to the Live CD and reinstalled Grub which now brings up a list of all the kernels and Memtest but, aside from Memtest, they still all boot to this. I don't have the passphrase for the Home folder (don't even remember encrupting it!) so I tried the ecryptfs method from the live CD to get the passphrase and backup the Home folder and do a new install but there is no trace of .ecryptfs or .Private folder and pretty much everything in the Home folder is locked. Tried an fsck on the hard drive, but nothing. I do remember thinking the hard drive was referred to as hda1, but the live CD shows it as sda1. Don't know if this affects anything. I have a feeling the installer regarded the USB stick as first hard drive and got confused.
