I learned that, even while on Linux, using Iceweasel/Firefox 3.0.6 is not safe. So I tried to update the browser for my PPC G4 iMac (256 MB RAM, 800 MHz processor).
1. I downloaded a backported Iceweasel .deb from URL...
2. I then tried to install it with dpkg -i PathToIceweasel.deb
3. There was an error. I remember seeing xulrunner-1.9.1 is not installed. I tried to install that with apt-get but it was not available.
4. Now when I click on web browser I get the error "Failed to execute default Web Browser: Input/Output error".
5. What can I do without having to reinstall?

My buddy has a computer with a problem and hes asked me to see if I can retrieve the data documents from the computer. The subject computer is a COMPAQ PRESARIO SR5030NX with a Pentium 4 cpu, 3.2 GHz, 1 GB RAM, running Windows Vista Home Basic.
His goal was to create a dual boot computer UBUNTU and Vista. What he did was to install UBUNTU, partitioning the computer in two partitions. The computer is now giving an error code of 21 when GRUB Loader starts up. Is there a restore disk or some kind of utility that can undo what was done to the computer. He has no backup disk.
I tried Recovery Commander Ver. 3 made by Avanquest but as their website indicates its for XP. They never updated it for Vista and Windows 7. Is there a utility that can undo some of the changes that were made to the machine when UBUNTU was installed, albeit, unsuccessfully.
(1) I have an HP PC running XP professional and I was wondering if I take the hard drive out from the COMPAQ and rig it to my HP via a SATA/IDE to USB 2.0 Adapter device would I be able to see the contents of that COMPAQ computer that had Vista and now UBUNTU.
(2)What about attaching the COMPAQ internal hard drive and attaching it to my HP as a slave drive.
(3)Can the UBUNTU disk going to help?
Were just after the data files and not software programs.

I have tried to upgrade from 10.10 to 11.04 three times and I have had no success. Every time I get the blank purple screen and go through hell to get it back to a usable point. I have been reading and researching about this issue and have had no luck. I have went through the steps of the sticky at the top of the forum and got no where. Can someone please look at my hardware listed below and get me some insight or a different route?

I have had Ubuntu desktop on my PC for a year now and am very happy with it. A couple of months ago I got a Ubuntu server 10.04 for playing about with. I have installed the gui, for personal reasons, but I want to upgrade to 10.10
Whenever I attempt the upgrade my server becomes unbootable and I have to reimage and start again. I have even tried performing the upgrade before I install the GUI but it still makes no difference.
Although I have the GUI I am doing the upgrade via command line.
Upon watching the upgrade in process, I find that no errors are occurring. Could it be something to do with my server provider?
Server Specs are: Specification: Intel Dual Core, 2.2 GHz 800MHz FSB, 2MB L2 Cache, 2Gb DDR, 1x 250Gb HDD

I am attempting to upgrade Fedora 12 to 13. I get an error screen that said root could not be found. Four options are given. Not sure exactly their wording, but two appear to allow you to cancel the other two warn that if you reinitialize you will wipe out all data.
I have a Vista partition and a Fedora partition. I've added the vista ntfs partition to fstab with no help. All of the partition use the long UUID form. I added the root location (root (hd0,5) to the upgrade menu item in grub.conf and that didn't work either.
I'm reluctant to proceed for fear of initializing the entire drive. I could live with installing Fedora 13 over the existing partitions.

I followed blindly this how to : [URl].. out of laziness and then for some reason bind9 didn't want to start. So I tried to apt-get remove it, but when I re-install it, it failed because
Code:
chgrp: cannot access `/etc/bind/named.conf*': No such file or directory
so I assume the chrooting stuff I did is in the way, but I know very little about chrooting and permissions ... how can I undo the following things I did :
Code:
/etc/init.d/bind9 stop

I made an attempt to backup my system (karmic koala) using this routine. cd / then sudo tar cvpzf backup.tgz --exclude=/proc --exclude=/lost+found --exclude=/backup.tgz --exclude=/mnt --exclude=/sys /
The process of backup went on for a very long time, which is probably normal. On returning to the computer in the morning, it was in suspend mode and would not power on via the usual method, tapping power button. So then I used the reset button, and after booting up a message appears on the top right that reports "Install problem! The configuration defaults for GNOME Power Manager have not been installed correctly. Please contact your computer administrator."
Is there something wrong with the statement that was used for backing up the system? Also when I attempt to login it does not work now either, it eventually returns to the login user selection. So is there a possibility the backup finished and then there may be a chance the system can be restored from the backup file? I have tried booting up with a live cd and could use some advice on how to navigate with terminal to root of the system and see if the backup file exist even, have been unable to get to the root folder(where the backup would be) with the GUI method via live cd.

When I give no password and escape that dialog, I can see all the mails that have been already downloaded form my gmail account. If any of you guys know already existing post, please redirect me to that one.

I installed from a live CD when it came to selecting the partition I re-sized the partition that Ubuntu was on because it was 68 gigs I shaved off 15 gigs for SUSE. Then I selected this new 15gig partition to install SUSE on, everything went fine with the installation I was tinkering around on SUSE but of course I needed internet access, so I go to get on Ubuntu where I had my file with my network key. I restarted expecting to see the usual GRUB boot-loader screen only now with an added option for SUSE. Instead I see an entirely new layout for the GRUB boot loader and all that is listed is SUSE, Failsafe SUSE, Windows XP, and Floppy. The Windows is my XP install and it loads fine sadly it is actually what I'm using now because it is the only thing left that I have my network key saved so I can get on this forum.
Looking on SUSE I notice that the 50gig partition formerly known as Ubuntu still exists I figure no problem add the partition back on to the boot-loader and I'm good to go. Added it and when I select to load it nothing happens it starts to then reverts back to the OS list. Does anyone A) Know how to resolve this or have any ideas. B) Think I can at least copy files off that 50 gig partition to an external hard drive.

When I try 'makebootdisk' and get to the 'format' stage, it tells me: "The attempt to format the floppy disk in /dev/fd0 has failed ..." The disk is fine, and can be read from, but the above msg. shows up instantly -- the light on the drive doesn't even come on. I'd expect this to be a routine problem but I can't find any solutions either here or on the web.

I think the installation caused the corruption of the partition table. I removed the last 3 logical partitions and gparted correctly reported the 2 remaining distros and the swap. The problem hopefully will be solved when I reinstall those distros. I have a 160 gig HD with 3 Linux,1 swap, and a Windows partition. I attempted to install PCLINUXOS unsuccessfully. When I rebooted I had the same grub. I checked gparted and it indicated all 160 gigs as unallocated. fdisk shows the partitions. and indicates one partition as empty where I attempted to install PCLOS.
No problem in accessing any of my distros, but currently I can't make any changes to my HD. I've tried parted magic and there was no solution there. I have been unable to download the Ubuntu Rescue remix. Is there a way to restore? I haven't used fdisk or cfdisk for that purpose. I am beginning to think I would need to delete all of the partitions in the extended.

Botched upgrade to 11.04, but learned enough about Unity that I don't want to go there. (also installer to put second new 11.04 wants to erase everything on main drive). Can reach 10.10 -boot from prior Linux - but mouse and internet are gone. Everything else seems to work and I can get to System and terminal with keyboard shortcuts, but need to reinstall mouse (Logitech M110) and internet. Can't find an Xorg.conf file or a /dev/input/event3.

I've been using Ubuntu since 6.04, not a linux guru by any means but can usually get myself out of trouble.
So, the issue... I installed 8.04 on my mother's laptop some time back as she was having trouble keeping Win 2000 running (she has a low spec no-name generic laptop btw). I live in Autsralia and she in England, i thought i could better support her if she was running Ubuntu... All has been well with 8.04 but with the new LTS release (10.04) i thought i'd talk her through the upgrade... Did the online upgrade via Update Manager, all seemed to go OK but when she went to log on after restart she got an error saying 'authentication failed' even though we are 100% sure we have the user name and password correct... Tried to do a ctrl+alt+F1 to by pass the GUI log on but couldn't get the terminal session to open up, just got a black screen - no command prompt.
So... thought OK re-install... downloaded the ISO, burned and sent her a CD in the post... talked her through the re-install, all seemed to go well (again) - BUT, after restart, couldn't log in "authentication failed" again...
So, remember i'm trying to talk a novice through all this... any thoughts!?!
If i can get her to log in i can then support her via some kind of remote sesion or other screen share... and it wont cost me a small fortune in international calls!!! But if i can't get a log in, i'm dead in the water!?

I had installed Ubuntu 8.04 and partitioned my drive to share 500gB with Windows XP. All was good. When I saw that Ubuntu 10.01 was available I downloaded it to update the 8.04. Ididn't want to have to redo all my configurations so told installer not to update config files. No entry in GRUB no boot. Tried to re-install 8.04 to replace 10.01 and get back to intial state. Current state Ubuntu won;t boot, XP still OK but don't know how to clean up my mess. I've attached a copy of a boot info script I ran.
Code:
Boot Info Script 0.55 dated February 15th, 2010

I ran the software manager upgrade/update install of 11.04. When I reboot almost immediately a quick error flashes on screen that says something like "missing prefix" then it goes to an unfamiliar menu with kernel choices that are very old and look nothing like my desktop. I think it may be some old install or something I dont know. I have an eee pc. I originally installed with WUBI but have done other kernel upgrades with no issues.

Will attach any logs requested; but I'm about to scrap the failed install and start over, 'cuz I want to test 10.04 LTS and the new Vmware Workstation 7.1--64 beta. The only thing I can think of is that I did not boot into the new kernel ( apt-get upgrade ) before doing the dist-upgrade. I've done a few of these dist-upgrades in the past this way; 6.06-LTS to 8.04, 8.04 to 9.x, etc

I have an Proliant DL380 that I use as a home server/router that I attempted to upgrade to Lucid. The gui upgrader first attempted to upgrade to 9.10 (as expected.)
I believe grub was incorrectly installed/updated. Not quite sure if grub2 was installed. The machine boots to a maintenance prompt. The partitions seem to be mounted read-only because of errors. The grub menu only shows an 8.04 kernel choice, even though all 9.10 packages were downloaded and, I believe, installed. The gui upgrader did fail with an error right before the "cleaning-up" stage. After "messing around" with it, the upgrader said I needed to reboot. So, I did and my problems started.
I tried booting the 9.10 Kubuntu cdrom and also a Knoppix 6 CD, but neither one would boot properly (gave me a BusyBox prompt.) So, I guess they don't like the Smart Array 6.
what I could try to fix and upgrade to 10.04? I really don't want to lose my configuration files (dhcp, firestarter rules, apache, squirrelmail, NFS, etc.)

i am an ubuntu nooby, out of curiosity i installed ubuntu 11.04 alpha3 last night. Yes, i will definitely never install an alpha version unless i wish to test it! Frankly said, i first installed 386 version on a notebook which runs just fine. So I thought why not install the 64 bit version on my pc.
Unfortunately, the system did not finish the first reboot in order to complete the installation. First it always stopped at "checking battery state". There, I read that this bug is already fixed: [URL]... I came across this thread: [URL]... So I pressed Alt +F2 in order to log in and performed sudo apt-get update followed by sudo apt-get upgrade. Everytime there was a new update I hoped, that this will fix the issue. But when I shutdown the system with sudo shutdown now -h and restart again there is no progress. The only thing that changed is that the system no stops at "Stopping userspace bootsplash", whatever that means?
