Ubuntu Installation :: Graphical Bug After Hibernation / Restart

since my update to version 11.04, I am experiencing a bug when using hibernation and restarting afterwards. When starting up the hibernated system, everything is normal until the end of the boot manager. Afterwards, (once there is something on the screen again, as it does switch to black afterwards), I am able to see only about 1/5th of my screen clearly. The left 4/5th of my screen are displayed as pure black with scrambled colored pixels at the upper 2 centimeters of the black area. The only thing that is displayed as it should in that area is my mouse pointer.
It is possible with some luck to log in from this screen (the luck is needed to find the correct place to click on to change from user selection to the PW field, where I can use the mouse pointer to find the PW field as it changes for text editing about the field, as it is expected to.)The funny thing is that you can catch small glimpses of what the screen actually looks like if there are bigger screen changes (during log on, when moving the mouse around and hovering buttons by chance, when using <Super> + 'e' to change the currently viewed desktop or when switching windows via alt + tab, ...), as then the screen flickers and shows for a fraction of a second what would normally be shown all the time.Any ideas how to solve this without having to downgrade? Any additional details I could give you to help finding the source of the problem?
I'm using an asus eee pc 1005ha, BTW. It was originally shipped with windows. And I am using the normal release of ubuntu instead of the netbook release as I did't like the look and feel of that version, when I first saw its default look on the netbook of a friend of mine. Also I am logging on to the classic view as I didn't like the changes of v11.04 either as there was no possibility to configure them properly to fit my needs.

Following upgrading my 09.04 partition to 09.10 then 10.04, all was working fine until I tried hibernate out for the first time - big mistake! If I can get to a position where i can log on to the system, I find that my ethernet network connection is disabled and I cannot get it to restart. My 09.10 system still works ok. I am tempted to do a clean install of 10.04, even though I'll have to spend some time reloading the extra's and re-configuring.

I'm using debian 5 x64 with xfce.Is there a way to configure (start/stop/restart) services (especially Apache2, mySQL and PHP) using a graphical or cli tool? I tried to use sysv-rc, sysv-rc-conf, rcconf and rc-conf in the terminal but Bash didn't find them (Although Synaptic show that sysv-rc is installed).

I have just finished the upgrade of the latest version and I'm at the point of my system restating.
My system automatically tried to restart but on the restart I got the 'terminal' view. It stopped when asking for my username (it never normally asks for this before the grub menu) and then password. I didn't get any further than that.
I now have on my screen (still in the terminal view before the grub menu)

I'm on my phone now so I don't actually have the symbol for before the dollar sign but your know what it is. The raised S on a 90 degree angle.

ASUS P5Q Deluxe, Intel Core 2 Duo, GeForce 8800, 4GB RAM, USB keyboard and mouse never had problems with suspend and hibernation in Ubuntu. Until the latest version 10.10. Both before and after installing the proprietary Nvidia drivers, the system enters the sleep and hibernate but I can not wake up properly. Specifically, while it looks as it starts up, but not fires up the X server. Oddly - operate only CTRL + ALT + F1-12. You can switch to the text cosole, see the "incentive" to sign but other keys do not work and nothing can be entered. Not working CTRL + ALT + DEL as well, so you need to turn off the system power.

I've recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 from a USB install. It worked very well for a few days, in which I hibernated at least once. Today, I hibernated Ubuntu again - But after powering up the ubuntu opened up fresh. In the same session I've installed GnomeBaker, and tried to use it - But it failed burning. A couple of restarts later Ubuntu stopped starting up - It doesn't even show the graphical ubuntu load screen, just quickly writes a lot of text, and the last screen contains a trace (I think), mounting errors, and the error "Target filesystem doesn't have /sbin/init.".
I have a BusyBox console (v1.13.3) with the cursor "(initramfs)". I found this post [URL]. In which transmutable describes the same problem I have, but I wasn't able to start into a live USB (or Live CD), and got error like the one described in the following post [URL]. My computer is Lenovo T410, and I'm dual booting Windows 7 32bit (Yes, there is a recovery partition - But Ubuntu worked before, so I reckon this is not the case).

i want to create/assign a swap partition so i can hibernate by comp. i've tried the ubuntu guide on creating a swap file but it didnt work, i created a linux-swap partition and used the mkswap command but that didnt work either (maybe it did but i cant hibernate anyway?!) right now my partitions look like this:
/dev/sda1 extended
/dev/sda5 linux-swap
/dev/sda3 ntfs (windows partition)
/dev/sda4 ext4 (ubuntu partition)

I've been having trouble trying to install ubuntu (and mint linux too) - I have the same problem with either version.
It's an Acer T180 tower PC, when I come to install it'll go through the motions of setting up the drive, copying files and then downloading/installing language packs. Randomly though between copying files and downloading/installing language packs it will just sit there and freeze. Sometimes it will just freeze and stay on the same image, other times it will freeze and what's best described as a window blinds effect will go across the whole screen. Either way the PC stops responding.
I've tried multiple downloads of iso files (ubuntu and then mint) - running on usb and also running from cd and dvd - same issue each time. I've made sure that the username is lowercase too (just in case).
The other thing I've tried is removing the separate nvidia graphics card and using just the internal one (again an nvidia card). Ubuntu will prompt that there are restricted drivers available - doesn't matter whether I install them or not - it still freezes just the same.

The 11.04 does Ubuntu Server installed with graphical environment, I'm getting a gnome graphical environment, but I wonder if there are other functional graphical environment with Ubuntu Server, the idea is that it serves to maintain the network and have tools for such end.

I'm not a Linux noob, but I am far from guru. I'm running a single board computer with a slightly customized Debian Etch (customized by the SBC vendor). No Gnome/KDE/X installed. My application is a control application which uses SDL (Simple DirectMedia Layer) to paint some basic graphics on the VGA. I need to run it as root because the application calls iopl() to access an IO port.If I run my application manually from the command line, life is sweet. From Googling around, I found http://www.debian-administration.org/articles/28, and hence I:1) Created a script in /etc/init.d2) Executed "update-rc.d scriptName defaults" to link the script into the boot sequenceAll very straightforward. My application starts at boot. But when I try to SSH/SFTP into the SBC, I get "Connection refused". So I can't manage the SBC anymore, and this is a big problem. I want to switch to Ubuntu 9.10 but the computer always freezes 30 to 45 seconds after entering the graphical mode. This includes the 64bit installer, the 64bit live CD version and I even installed the 32bit version with the alternate install CD (text-mode). In all 3, I can use the system (e.g. log in, click Next) just fine for half a minute, then it crashes. It even crashes if I don't do anything.
Here are my hardware specs:
MB: Biostar TF560 A2+
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 5000+
RAM: DDR2 800 Dual 128 bit, 2T (4GB)
GPU: ATI Radeon HD 3870
The sound and network cards are integrated but I've tried disabling them from BIOS as well as removing all hard drives and the problem persists. I have also verified the CD successfully. Note that right now I'm using SLAX from a CD as I formatted my hard drive (so at least some Linux works).

After running 9.10 (Kubuntu) uneventfully on my Thinkpad x100e (chip: AMD Neo MV-40, graphics: Radeon HD 3200), I upgraded to Lucid and am getting a system freeze/hang.
I'm running the Xorg radeon driver.
At first the freeze was on the KDM login screen, right after the audio drumbeats. I upgraded the BIOS to the latest from Lenovo, and now I can log in, but it freezes right away while trying to build the desktop. I've tried the failsafe graphical boot, and all I get is a black screen.
I've seen some threads related to the i845/i855 chips, but that shouldn't be an issue here (although I tried some of the workarounds which didn't help). I'd like to avoid the fglrx driver if I can, but I'll give that a shot if I can't get past this.

I have successfully installed ns-2.29 on ubuntu and even patched in mannasim. the "make file" of ns2 is sucessful as well. The problem arises, whenever i try to run a tcl file.. eg: example1.tcl it gives an error regarding nam. I have installed nam-1.11 and configured it too. It is however unable to open the graphical window. Moreover, no trace files are created, nor any output is found in "nam.out"

early tl;dr: The fancy grub breaks on my wubi 10.04 install, can I force it to use the old grub?
When I rebuild grub.cfg (last time was yesterday for kernel update to .37), and shut down / reboot, grub breaks because it can't 'loadfont' and a few other errors which are related to the 'graphical' grub boot menu.
To fix this I have to boot into a live CD (also Ubuntu 10.04) and run the following:

I know how to fix it but is there a way to skip having to do this on upgrades
(If I edit the grub.cfg before shutting down then this doesn't happen, obviously, but sometimes I forget and this is the result. I'd rather stop the problem at it's source than fight against the updater).

I had just upgraded when after the first reboot I noticed that the black Ubuntu screen (with the little red/white dots) is actually white and buggy. It's unreadable and looks trashed.
After the first login, the desktop wasn't able to load properly, leaving me with a blinking, unresponsive icons and no menubars.
The only way to use the desktop environment is to choose Ubuntu Classic (both with and without effects) and Ubuntu Safe Mode.
I do have nvidia drivers installed (173).

The problem is when I boot from the lubuntu CD & select Try Lubuntu or Install Lubuntu the computer hangs. Xubuntu 10.04 was aready installed & I could easily boot to it. I thought may be some partition table error is causing that issue & I deleted all the existing partitions with Parted Magic Cd in Console Mode.
NB: When I tried to boot to the Parted Magic graphical session the PC hanged then too.I am totally confused. Cant understand what is going wrong here. I am now left with a broken system.

I'd like to do a fresh install of newly released Jessie with only Xfce in a graphical installer. When I come to the point where i have to select the DE to install, there are options: Debian desktop environment, and then ...GNOME, ...Xfce, ...Lxde etc.
I guess that with the first option, it's like in Wheezy - it installs the default, which is gnome. But if i choose the ...xfce option, do i have to keep the 'debian desktop environment' option checked, or will that just install gnome alongside Xfce? Do i have to check only Xfce as an option?

I am trying to install Squeeze (Debian 6.0.2), KDE environment, desktop PC, older 32-bit single CPU, 40 GB hard drive wholedisk, 2 GB RAM). I am trying to install an encrypted hard drive (takeover installation using entire hard drive).
Each time I try this I seem to run into different problems, and to date I have not succeeded in obtaining graphical installation. My most recent previous thread on my problems is at

It seems I will need to request using apt in the shell the Squeeze package firmware-linux-nonfree. I am not familiar with configuring apt from the command line. Can anyone just tell me what I need? (I have many other things I am trying to learn today, so RTFM would not be helpful in this instance.) I am hoping apt will be autoconfigured well enough to get the deb if I simply give the command. Would it be

I want to ensure before trying to get apt to install debs over the internet that the key-signing and package verification is working. I hope that all is done automatically by the installer, but does anyone know with certainty? I stress that (as I understand things) checking the GPG signature of a signed deb is different from and complementary with checking the integrity hash; both verifications are crucially important. The reason I ask is that at least under oldstable (Lenny) there was a separate debsig package, which seems to imply that apt does not automatically acquire the ability to check the GPG signature of signed debs.
Someone said that in addition to non-free drivers I might need to obtain firmware. I have never been able to do this successfully, probably because hardware sites assume Windows users and I don't use Windows at all.

I have my first problem with drivers in Linux! I installed openSuSE 11.4 x86 on my computer (Intel Dual-Core 2,5 Ghz; Nvidia 7300 GS) and after installing graphical drivers (proprietary) I can't load the system. All I have is a progress bar of user's profile loading and playing the startup sound. I already installed openSUSE 11.4 x86_64 version on this computer and there was no problem with drivers.

I have a suspend problem in my laptop. Sometimes, when resuming from suspend, the network adapter is down (that is, the network does not work and the light of the network adapter is off). Restarting the network service doesn't work, because I think that the system forgot about the hardware, and probably the driver should be reloaded.Does anyone knows how to do that?(ps. /etc/init.d/networking restart does not work, because the hardware driver is not being recognized anymore).

I successfully installed 1.4 last night. ran perfectly. Asked me to install the NVidia graphics driver. Not problem, still worked fine. Had to reboot, no problem worked just fine. Shut the machine down and two hours later the machine starts, goes through Bios, says booting OS, then restarts. just stays in this loop.I also installed virtualbox, which opened fine when tested. I did not add a new OS.I re-inserted the usb drive i did the original install from and it the install program loaded fine.Is there a way to role back to the last known good configuration?
