I've just upgraded to Natty and lost ability to login through the Gnome login screen - "Module is unknown" message appears after I enter the correct password and hit "Enter".
I'm still able to switch to a text console and login there, both as root and as a restricted user.

View 2 Replies View RelatedUsing mrepo, i'm trying to pull down centos 5.6 updates from a mirror (say, mirrors.kernel.org or mirrors.usc.edu). i want to use rsync to do this so i can try to exclude packages i don't need on my servers (e.g. firefox, openoffice). when i try this, i get the error "@ERROR: Unknown module '5.6'".
The following rsync command is what mrepo uses when i run "mrepo -ugvvvv":
When i run that, i get the unknown module error.
But what i don't understand about that error is, sniffing out the rsync server's modules on the commandline shows me that module (and path?) should work. like so:
Anyone know what i'm doing wrong when trying to pull this mirror down via mrepo? (or even that long rsync command)
Our Sled 10.1 server is running as a VM on VSpher 4. After a power outage we can not log into the server we get the Error in Module message. I can however disable the nic card for the server in the vm console and the system logs in with no problem.

Yesterday, a friend of mine deleted one of the partitions (swap+linux) because they weren't being used (weren't even mounted) and he thought I could use the free space. I kept on using the laptop but today I had to reboot it. Instead of getting the usual grub menu I got this:

I upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04 on my Toshiba 32-bit laptop without any problems.Since the upgrade I am starting to have troubles on this machine. Most others are 64-bit and bar an Evolution issue are fine.In this case, 24 hours after the upgrade the machine wanted to do an Update. It would not allow the update until I fixed some broken packages which I did via Synaptics Package Manager. I then Marked All Upgrades and did the update from there.It was fine until I shut down and tried to log in again.I got the Blue Screen of Death!!!!!! I thought only Windows had this!Anyway, I could not log in. The auto login was not working so I used Other which gave me Recovery, entered my UN and PW, and I got the error message:

Looking at lsmod, it doesn't look like I have anything NAT related loaded ( I just have iptable_filter, ip_tables, and x_table ). Doing a locate nat, I find a module that looks like it should work. I'm running 10.04.1 LTS - Kernel is 2.6.32-25-generic #45-Ubuntu SMP and it is pretty much stock - haven't done anything fancy... this module looks promising:

i installed ubuntu 10.04.. all very nice, but not the os for me.. lightscribe problems, front ir panel problems. minor niggles for sure, but enough for me to go ahead with formatting and installing windows. simple job...or so i thought... using windows set up, i formatted c: and continued with install...on first restart i got a grub error saying unknown file system... i have tried loads of different things... fix mbr fixboot, that nt60 one. dban wouldnt work either.. im at my wits end ive spunked the best part of 1000 on this system and my wife is nagging me.

Everything has been working fine for a a long time but yesterday I tried to delete an unused partition through the Disk Utility in ubuntu (System->Adminstration->Disk Utility) and everything was messed up. I get the error "Failed to load module "nvidia" (module-specific error,0) no drivers available. I'm using the driver from Nvidia. I know that this is not an official Fedora kernel and I should be bothering CCRMA about this, but in the mean time could I edit the entry in grub.conf so that it will use the Nouveau driver for that kernel only? That way I could "dual-boot", and just use the rt kernel when I want to use audio software and don't need 3d graphics.

I have logged in today and update manager reminds me of an update with linx-backports-module-2.6.31-14-generic. However my current kernel has been updated a while ago and is now 2.6.31-17. That obviously is more recent that that backport version. What should i do? By the way that update is from a PPA repository other that the default. I am wondering the update manager has no way to tell which kernel version i have at all? Should i actually go ahead with the installation?

I am having a problem with the latest update of lucid ubuntu. I was on 10.04 for the longest time but decided to update while I was out doing errands. When I got back the logon screen was made up of blue and gray windows on a completely black background and the mouse and keyboard wouldn't work!
I found that if I unplugged and then replugged my mouse that I could get it working, but not all the options work properly. When you try to close a menu it just stays up, but it isn't there at the same time. Also, the shutdown/restart options don't work along with the physical power button on my computer, I have to remove the battery and power cord to shut it down.
I am currently dual booting ubuntu and windows 7 on my gateway NV59 laptop.
After attempting to install Ubuntu 10.10, the boot drops into grub rescue mode Under that, I can see 3 drives, hd0, hd1 and hd2. Apparently grub2 switched the order, as the CD installer had the drives as
/sda partition /home
/sdb partition /boot, swap, /(root), /spare (sdb1,sdb2,sdb3, & sdb4 in that order)
/sdc partition /spare
but grubs lists (hd0) (hd0,1) (hd1)(hd1,1) (hd2)(hd2,3)(hd2,2)(hd2,1)
Apparently grub2 puts /sdc before /sdb when listing out under the ls command in rescue mode??
I have tried several times to run the "install-grub" command, and it always comes up with no errors.
Should I try installing grub2 to the first drive /sda (hd0) instead ?
Whenever I try to enter in the commands from the tutorial https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2, I always get "unknown filesystem" error. If grub2 cannot read anything, then obviously I cannot boot the system.
I downloaded truecrypt Linux version, giving me a file named truecrypt-6.3a-ubuntu-x86.tar.gz. I assume that's the archive. Double clicking on that produced file truecrypt-6.3a-setup-ubuntu-x86. I assume that's the executable. When I try to run that, I get a "could not display ... unknown filetype" error. Could someone tell me what I'm doing wrong? I plan to run truecrypt under the easycrypt GUI.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI had Ubuntu and Kubuntu installed to dual-boot using the GRUB loader installed by Kubuntu. I mistakenly formatted the Kununtu partition to NTFS in an attempt to install Windows XP in its place without updating grub to pull the files from my Ubuntu partition.
Now, when I go to boot the computer, I receive a the "error: unknown filesystem" and the grub rescue prompts for commands. I've attempted to boot from both a Ubuntu Live CD and a Secured Ubuntu CD with boot repair built into it, but receive the same message both times. I know this isn't an issue with my boot order (I've changed that), and my computer will boot into a Windows XP setup disc (which will not proceed for a different reason)
